Les réalisateurs d’Ondes et silence nous font pénétrer dans l’univers
de citoyens souffrant d’hypersensibilité électromagnétique. Ces
« réfugiés des ondes » se sont installés en Virginie-Occidentale autour
de l’observatoire de Green Bank, dans le secteur connu sous le nom
de « National Radio Quiet Zone » (zone nationale de silence radio).
Entre le documentaire, l’essai cinématographique, la science-fiction
et le film expérimental, Ondes et silence défie les genres et tisse
une trame singulière où le traitement visuel et sonore transfigure la
réalité pour faire comprendre et surtout faire sentir la souffrance et
le désarroi des personnes électro-sensibles.
Ce travail complexe sur l’image et le son génère des moments de
cinéma hallucinants – des moments de grâce pendant lesquels le
spectateur est amené à voir les ondes électromagnétiques prendre
forme dans l’environnement, traverser les murs des maisons et envahir
l’espace de leurs puissantes vibrations. Connus notamment pour
leur travail au sein du groupe musical Godspeed You! Black Emperor,
David Bryant et Karl Lemieux signent une œuvre sensorielle percutante!
In Quiet Zone, the filmmakers take us deep into the world of those who suffer from electromagnetic hypersensitivity. These “wave refugees” settled in West Virginia
around the Green Bank observatory, in an area known
as the National Radio Quiet Zone. Combining elements
of documentary, film essay and experimental film, Quiet
Zone defies genres, weaving together an unusual story
in which sound and image distort reality to make the
distress and suffering of these people palpable.
Through the use of complex imagery and sound, mindblowing cinematic moments are born – moments of
grace during which viewers witness electromagnetic
waves take shape in the environment, travel through
walls and invade spaces with their powerful vibrations.
Known for their work in the musical group Godspeed You!
Black Emperor, David Bryant and Karl Lemieux produced
a striking piece of sensory genius.

ABOUT THE FILMMAKERS
Karl Lemieux
Né en 1980 à Kingsey Falls (Québec, Canada), Karl
Lemieux a réalisé plusieurs films expérimentaux
(Mouvement de lumière, 2004; Western Sunburn,
2006; Mamori, 2010) et donné de nombreuses
performances de cinéma en direct avec des musiciens
d’avant-garde. Il est également cofondateur du
collectif Double Négatif. Depuis 2010, il performe
avec le groupe Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
David Bryant
Guitariste, musicien et concepteur sonore, David
Bryant est connu pour sa participation aux groupes
Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Hiss Tracts et Set Fire
to Flames. En 2004, il a créé le studio The Pines,
lieu essentiel de la musique actuelle à Montréal,
en plus de signer la musique et la conception
sonore de Madame Tutli-Putli (Chris Lavis et Maciek
Szczerbowski, 2007) et de Passage (Karl Lemieux,
2007). Ondes et silence est sa première réalisation
cinématographique.

Karl Lemieux
Born in 1980 in Kingsey Falls (Quebec, Canada),
Karl Lemieux is the co-founder of the Double
Negative Collective. He has directed several
experimental films (Motion of Light, 2004;
Western Sunburn, 2006; Mamori, 2010) and given
numerous live cinema performances with avantgarde musicians. He has also been performing
with the band Godspeed You! Black Emperor
since 2010.
David Bryant
Musician, recordist and sound designer David
Bryant is known for his role in the bands Godspeed
You! Black Emperor, Hiss Tracts and Set Fire to
Flames. In 2004, he built The Pines Recording
Studio, where he has produced the music and
sound design for Madame Tutli-Putli (Chris Lavis
and Maciek Szczerbowski, 2007) and Passage
(Karl Lemieux, 2007). Quiet Zone is his directorial
debut.
