Prayer News from France Mission – Issue 127 – Spring 2013 Inside this Edition A new church-plant in Aix-les-Bains A spiritual centre for Argenton www.france-mission.org Asnieres: past, present & future Paul’s page: The ups and downs of church-planting 2012 financial review Reflections by Dr Paul Cooke, FM’s British Director F T here are some exciting stories in this issue of Action Missionnaire. The new project in Aix-les-Bains (pages 8-9) represents the first phase of an ambitious vision to see three new churches planted in this Alpine valley over the next decade. And the spiritual centre being developed at Argenton-sur-Creuse (pages 12-13) illustrates well how FM churches seek to send out shoots from an established base (in this case, the church in Châteauroux). Similar stories are happening in various places around France. If you haven’t yet acquired your copy of the new DVD – “Vocation: Implanteur d’église” (Vocation: Church-Planter) – please let me encourage you to do so (see page 15 for more details). I’m sure it’ll give you a strong sense of how the Lord is at work in France and provide you with valuable insights into the life of church-planters and their families. Once the excitement of the initial churchplanting project is over, of course, the call is to persevere in the patient – often challenging – work of evangelism, discipleship, and pastoral care. Such ministry benefits enormously from faithful, long-term prayer. So thank you to all those of you who have been praying in precisely this way for many years now – what a blessing you are to our missionaries and churches! Sadly, though, sometimes things just don’t work out as we would have wished – and I’m very sorry to report that the Burke family have taken the painful decision to return to the UK (see page 15 for more details). They’re a wonderful family and it’s been a huge privilege getting to know them over the past couple irstly, a huge thank you for supporting us – whether through prayer or finances – in 2012. If your gifts enable ministry from a practical perspective, your prayers support ministry from a spiritual perspective. Time now to look back… Time to thank God – and to thank you! We “inherited” the pastoral responsibility for Asnières in 2005 from Pierre Egger, the church founder. Our objective was to help it move on to maturity and autonomy. Asnières allowed us to discover African and Caribbean cultures. Their faith context and socio-economic situations differed radically from our own previous church experience. Crowds would come to Sunday services and most were immigrants. Their world was a cruel one, made up of menial jobs, separation from loved ones, low-standard housing, and an uncertain welcome in the host country. Their understanding of the faith was often full of confusion – an amalgam of the gospel, prosperity teaching, Catholicism, animism… but they came to church, hungry for God. Asnières helped us understand our Saviour who had compassion on the crowds “because they were harassed and helpless” (Mathew 9:36). Jesus also said: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven” (Mathew 5:3). For us, these Pastor Nicol Lesaint & his people were no wife Mari-Jo 4 Meet missionaries Elcio & Sueli Rocha – the couple we would love to see at the FM church in Asnières diverse congregation in a relatively poor Parisian suburb. We’re delighted at the prospect of serving in France, but also well aware of the challenges. We pray that God will use us to help extend His kingdom in France. We’d love to leave for Asnières in the next few months, but still need to find some additional regular support. The Asnières church are very generously going to provide our accommodation and FM Trust have offered to help with our relocation costs. H longer just objects of ministry. They became examples of spiritual urgency and vitality. New faces would rotate through the church at an exhausting pace for those who tried to learn names and initiate some sort of pastoral care. We learned to seek God’s grace as never before. Souls were saved, marriages stabilised, and disciples made. We learnt to lean on our ethnic brothers and sisters to sort out problems we, with our cultural backgrounds, could not always resolve. The key to the church’s future was the establishment of core lay leadership. The church named its first elder in the spring of 2012. With the building paid off in January 2012, the church was freed to employ a parttime pastor – Nicol Lesaint. We were able to leave Asnières with this new financial liberty and church leaders who had become more autonomous. Nicol has a heavy pastoral load and would greatly benefit from some co-workers. France Mission hope that Elcio & Sueli Rocha will be able to play that role. Pray that the new leadership will hunger – as we did – for the extraordinary grace of God who comes and uses us in our weakness. FOR YOUR PRAYERS EVERY MONDAY ello! We’re both Brazilian nationals and that’s where our missionary experience started. We got married in 1990 and then, in 1994, God called us serve Him in Guinea – a predominantly Muslim country in West Africa. We were the first Brazilian couple to work there as missionaries and our main role was to train Guineans for mission. During this time our two boys, Eduardo and Andre, were born. They are now 21 and 19 respectively, and studying at British universities. A Sunday congregation Please pray for: The Rochas: Eduardo, Sueli, Elcio, Andre (L to R) We spent 12 years working in Frenchspeaking Africa, before returning to Brazil to serve in a church in Sao Paulo. Then, in 2009, we moved to the UK where I started work as an associate pastor in a Portuguese-speaking church in London. However, we still felt a call to serve God in a French-speaking context. Discussions with France Mission last year led to the possibility of going to serve the church in Asnières. Our various ministry experiences over 25 years should serve us well in an ethnically • This new phase in our life • Our two boys staying in the UK for their studies • The remaining financial support we need • The ability to adapt well to life in Asnières You can contact Peter & Suzanne at [email protected] and Elcio & Sueli at [email protected] FOR YOUR PRAYERS EVERY MONDAY 5 Moving forward in Marseille Missionaries Simon & Radia Allchin share encouraging news about their inner-city church 2 012 was a year of great encouragement for us at “Point Bible”. We now have twice as many people regularly attending our Sunday services and weekday meetings. The newcomers are genuinely local and have diverse ethnic backgrounds. They are also younger, have families, and really want to get actively involved in the ministry. This is not, of course, without certain problems, but it has completely changed the make-up of the church. The second main development has been the purchase of our new premises. We finally have the keys, but still await the official stamp of the planning authorities. We went ahead with the Sunday School children purchase because we had the assurance that all the major aspects of our dossier were fine. If we hadn’t signed, we could have lost the opportunity. So signing this contract was partly an act of faith and we ask you to pray for this situation. Although Marseille is the European City of Culture for 2013, we are in a very run-down part of town. However, there is a tremendous potential for a dynamic Christian witness here. Jesus Christ is present and is transforming lives. We are at a point where we need a full-time Christian couple (we are only part-time), and if we find them we will continue to work here alongside them. Sharing a meal after the service Longstanding FM supporters, David & Ruth Shillitoe, recently visited “Point Bible” and have provided a report which gives an excellent flavour of a Sunday service there. You can download it at www.france-mission. org/fmtrust/newsletters.html. The photos on this page were taken by the Shillitoes during this visit. 6 Simon explaining the gospel to a visitor You can send encouragements to Simon & Radia at [email protected] FOR FOR YOUR YOUR PRAYERS PRAYERS EVERY EVERY TUESDAY TUESDAY Reaching out and seeking God in Le Pré Saint Gervais Missionaries Jonathan & Rachel Vaughan outline new developments and challenges The Fête de Noël Starting an all-age service at Le Pré We were greatly encouraged by the children’s Fête de Noël (Christmas Celebration) where we welcomed nine non-church families, five of them attending church for the first time. Christmas is a great opportunity to invite people to an event, but we have been thinking for some time about how we can encourage these families to come along at other times of the year. We are therefore testing the idea of a monthly all-age service, starting in March, to see if it can create a “bridge” between one-off events and our regular Sunday services. We plan to use similar elements from the Christmas events that appeal to people – interactive Bible teaching, with opportunities for discussion and craft activities for the kids, and an apéritif (drinks and nibbles) afterwards. The all-age services will be held in the morning and will be shorter than our usual late-afternoon services, in the hope that this makes it easier for non-church families to come. We are starting a new teaching series on Exodus and the all-age services will therefore be on Ben Firth the same theme. Please do pray for these services, for people to come and feel welcome, for clear Bible-teaching, and for all of us to get a fresher, larger view of God. Trusting God during change The church is set for some big changes this year, as several key members will be leaving us in June. Please pray that God would send new people who can help lead and teach. Pray that as a church we would depend on God and trust rather than worry, hope rather than be discouraged. We are very much looking forward to the arrival of Ben Firth, a language student on his year abroad, who will be coming to improve his French whilst working for the church from March to July. Send Jonathan & Rachel a message at [email protected] FOR YOUR PRAYERS EVERY TUESDAY 7 Being the hands and feet of Jesus Aerial view of Aix-les-Bains and Lac du Bourget Missionary Thierry Mirone introduces the church-planting project for Aix-les-Bains and surrounding area O ver the last two years we’ve been putting together a team to go to the region “Between 3 Lakes” that reaches from Aix-lesBains to Cruseilles, passing through Rumilly. This Alpine valley represents a population of nearly 100,000 people. Our goal is to form a team with a mixture of gifts, talents, and experience that can touch the population through many different avenues of service. Steve & Donna Niles, leaders of the project, are veteran missionaries who’ve been in a churchplanting ministry in France for 35 years. They’ve just finished a church-plant in Annecy that provides the sending church for the project in Aix. We, Thierry & Valérie Mirone, with our three boys, are the co-leaders of the Aix project. We’ve served as missionaries with France Mission for the last 13 years, specialising in discipleship training. Frédéric & Johanna Defoy, a couple from the Annecy church who are finishing their Masters training, will be joining the team in June 2013. Jordan & Kate Egli, a young missionary couple currently learning French, will have their first church-planting experience with this project. The team also has two Bible school students doing their two-year internship: Matthieu Giralt, whose expertise is in the arts with a special emphasis on video communication. Raphaël & Marion Charrier with Abi, their 18-month-old daughter. Raphaël is an evangelist with France Évangélisation. Our starting point is the largest-populated city of the region, Aix-les-Bains. Each member of the team is in the process of moving to this area, and at this time we are concentrating our efforts to: • Study the “background history” of the city to identify needs and interests • Develop relationships with local people • Work through the many administrative steps for a church-plant • Look for a meeting place adapted to the activities we want to undertake Our approach to ministry is founded on four particular values: • Be the gospel incarnate as a community of believers in the city • Be obedient to the missionary mandate to multiply disciples • Be an example of the gospel in word and deed • Be the Body of Christ with daily fellowship and brotherly love Prayer needs for the Aix team and project: Potential church premises – inside… 8 … and outside FOR YOUR PRAYERS EVERY WEDNESDAY • To develop key relationships in Aix-les-Bains • To find a more permanent building solution • To serve the city as the visible “hands and feet” of Jesus • To find housing for all the team members L to R: Matthieu, Steve, Thierry, Raphaël The first church service was held on 24th February, bringing together the contacts the team members have been developing. The new church is made up of several isolated Christians who’ve been praying for some time to see a church begin in their city. We are meeting in rented facilities, hoping to find a more permanent solution. The Lord has led us to meet several key people who’ve been able to help us in many areas. We can see the hand of God at work through these new relationships. We’ve been able to share our vision and dreams and these people have fully embraced the needs and goals of the project. We’re developing a network of partners willing to commit to join us in this effort. For more information (including a presentation video in English), visit us at www. prayforaix.com. FOR YOUR PRAYERS EVERY WEDNESDAY 9 Building bridges in Châteauroux Sharing the gospel in Montreuil-Bellay Missionaries Paul & Marjorie Dowling see 2013 as a year of evangelistic outreach Missionaries Chris & Colette Small ask us to pray that contacts might become converts January. There was a fantastic atmosphere for the 17 kids who came, including 4 new contacts. This gives us encouragement for the future. All six of us are members of the FM church in Châteauroux where we all continue to serve. We thank God that we can count on the church’s support as we prepare ourselves spiritually for what lies ahead and seek the Lord’s will. The second practical step was for Michaël and me to move to Argenton-sur-Creuse to start getting involved in local life, for example by joining a folk dance group. In this rural location, effective witness depends on being known in the community and word-of-mouth is the most powerful means of communication. The Lord opened the way for us by providing an unexpected donation which enabled us to take out a mortgage on a property comprising three buildings. We live in one of these and are doing it up to become a guest house. Our future home will be in the renovated stables. In time another building will provide prayer- and meetingrooms as well as office space for missionaries. The Ravaiojaonas and Dobés hope to join us in Argenton in due course. Please pray for all that lies ahead. Now is an opportune time to give you the story of what’s happened with the project since last September. At the start it was agreed by the church that we would organise the project in collaboration with the secular social worker based in the Community Centre just opposite our building. Chris fixed up a timetable with her for the days on which we would do our distribution of non-food items. These were to be on Saturday mornings once a month. After three months it was obvious that a change had to be made. Each time we got ready for the distribution Chris checked with the social worker that there were people who were going to come and each time no one came. After these New DVD discouraging times and several meetings with the social worker, we decided on a new plan of action. We decided that she would accompany those whom she had recommended to benefit from the project. This was to overcome a reluctance to enter a church building. Also, we changed the day and time of the distribution to a Friday afternoon. This was to fit into the timetable of mothers dropping off their children at the local primary school. So out came the products on a Friday afternoon, just before the Christmas holidays. We waited and waited and waited. No one. No one at the Community Centre either. So we had to pack up. After the holidays Chris met with the social worker to find out what had happened. She was very apologetic and said that she had forgotten the date! So we tried again for another Friday afternoon. This time success: the social worker arrived with two ladies! The project had finally begun! It reminds me of a wellknown saying: “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” The Burke family The Burke family have taken the difficult decision to return to the UK. The main reason for the decision is financial: the impact of the tough economic climate in the UK, coupled with higher costs of living in the Paris area, meant that the Burkes were facing a significant shortfall in their level of monthly support. This stressful situation resulted in Julia falling ill with severe Bell’s palsy and very high blood pressure. Praise God, she is now recovering well, but must be very careful in regards to stress. So, after much prayer, sadness, and discussion, she and LeRoy felt it right to return to the UK to spare Julia and the rest of the family any further stress. LeRoy will be returning to Baptist ministry, while André and Henri will be resuming their British education. Let’s thank God for the blessing the family were to many people while in France and ask Him to continue to bless and sustain them over the weeks and months ahead. Vocation: Implanteur d’église (“Vocation: Church-Planter”) is an excellent DVD (with English subtitles) produced by the National Council of French Evangelicals. It presents four recent examples of French church-planting, including the FM church in Loches. The DVD retails at about £8, but it’s such a great resource that we’ll gladly send it you for free!
