Pour sa troisième exposition depuis son ouverture, H Gallery présente les deux premières expositions personnelles
en France de Davide Cantoni et Roman Jehanno.
A travers ce dialogue, l’artiste italo-américain Davide Cantoni, déjà collectionné par le MoMA de New York et le
jeune artiste français, Roman Jehanno, gagnant du Prix Hasselblad Masters, explorent ce que les hommes savent
faire de mieux: la guerre et l’exercice de leur métier.
Par une technique de dessin inédite pour l’Américain et par la photographie pour le Français, tous deux dressent
un panorama de notre monde, des deux faces d’une même médaille, celle de ces êtres humains, très, tellement,
jamais trop humains...
Vernissage le vendredi 25 novembre 2016 de 18h à 21h.

Deux expositions personnelles
Davide Cantoni, dont les œuvres sont collectionnées, entre autres, par le MoMA, analyse et dissèque les conflits
de la planète tels qu’ils sont rapportés par les médias et en particulier, à travers les images du New York Times. Au
cours des années, la pratique artistique de l’artiste italo-américain qui vit et travaille depuis 20 ans à New York s’est
focalisée sur la manière dont notre société présente les images liées à la guerre et à ses conséquences : réfugiés,
torture, cartels de la drogue, groupes armés, paysages dévastés. Notre société étant consumée par ces images, il a
conçu une grande installation intitulée 111 Years à partir de cent onze dessins brûlés où il a répertorié et cartographié, année après année, tous les conflits qui ont éclaté sur terre entre 1900 et 2010.
Pour la première exposition personnelle en France de Davide Cantoni, H Gallery présente ses extraordinaires dessins qui sont le résultat des brûlures du soleil sur le papier à travers une loupe, un travail obsessionnel de précision et
de beauté mais également de destruction poétique, en accord avec son propos.
Utilisant des photographies comme modèles pour ses dessins brûlés, l’artiste crée des œuvres qui, tout en imitant
le processus photographique dans leur forme, sont aussi solidement ancrées dans les traditions des beaux-arts, notamment par leur composition. Le papier est d’abord sensibilisé grâce au crayon graphite et exposé à la lumière du
soleil à travers une lentille, afin que la combustion elle-même soit l’auteur des lignes et que se révèlent à la fois des
images en positif et en négatif.
L’artiste examine notre perception des événements actuels, leur représentation dans les médias et la façon dont ils
sont véhiculés. Son intention est de forcer le regardeur à questionner et à déchiffrer ces images qui sont aussi endommagées que les acteurs des événements représentés. En rendant plus difficilement lisibles ces images, il veut obliger
à prendre le temps d’observer leur contenu et à mener une réflexion, non seulement sur leur représentation mais aussi
sur notre société, sur ceux qui y vivent, sur nos actions et nos aveuglements choisis.
De manière implicite, Davide Cantoni s’interroge également sur son inspiration en tant que matériel jetable puisque
les illustrations sont publiées dans un périodique destiné à être uniquement un quotidien, donc obsolète dès le lendemain. Le pouvoir de l’artiste, son regard, son choix transforme cet éphémère en un matériel permanent, en une
œuvre d’art. La beauté, une fois de plus, transcende la laideur, insuffle une élégance étrange et mystérieuse à ce qui
n’est que malaise et atrocité. L’art en tant que moyen de rédemption. L’art comme moyen de donner une voix à ce
qui n’en a plus. L’art comme moyen de lutter contre l’oubli...
Pour entrer dans un temps historique, pérenne, les images passent par une «purification quasi-rituelle» par le feu le
plus naturel et le plus puissant qui soit: le soleil. Cette source de vie – dont la lumière est à l’œuvre dans une grande
majorité de photographies – s’oppose symboliquement à tout ce que ces images véhiculent de mortifère et continue
à briller sans tenir compte de la cruauté des situations. L’opération employée par Davide Cantoni, toute de patience
et de temps, nie le statut fugace et précaire d’images de presse: en brûlant ses dessins par le soleil, Davide Cantoni
les élève au statut de traces d’un événement réel, qui a failli être perdu dans le flux infini et continu d’images, provenant des médias du monde. Il produit des échos à la signification historique de ces événements et leur accorde une
véritable place dans notre mémoire collective.
Roman Jehanno est un jeune photographe de talent, diplômé de l’Ecole des Gobelins dont H Gallery présente la
première exposition personnelle. Dans la lignée universaliste d’Auguste Sander, il parcourt le monde depuis 2014
en dressant un état des lieux non-exhaustif de l’homme au travail. Le Coeur des hommes à l’ouvrage lui a permis de
remporter en 2014, le Premier Prix de l’Hasselblad Masters. Ce projet se compose de plusieurs capsules mettant
chacune en lumière une profession, une zone géographique ou un groupe de personnes en particulier. Sa dernière
série sur ce thème est récente puisqu’elle date de l’été 2016. Elle retrace sa traversée de l’Indonésie, de l’Ile de Java

à l’Ile de Bali, depuis les sauniers atypiques qui récoltent le sel sur des plages de sable noir volcanique aux mineurs
de soufre du volcan Kawah Ijen. Cette série révèle autant la passion des hommes que les conditions de travail à la
limite de l’esclavage, tout en magnifiant chaque instant.
Les photos de Roman Jehanno sont inspirées par le photojournalisme bien qu’il en déconstruise les composantes.
Ses œuvres sont bien le fruit de rencontres, de recherches sur les individus, d’interviews, de temps passé avec ses
modèles. Elles traduisent des vies banales ou difficiles, évoquent des histoires d’engagement comme celle de ce cultivateur de bambous qui représentera l’Indonésie à la COP22 et qui se bat contre les multinationales chinoises pour
protéger l’environnement. Cependant, le résultat, les images elles-mêmes ne sont pas l’équivalent d’un reportage.
Photographe et artiste avant tout, Roman Jehanno travaille sur les compositions et les mises en scène autant que sur
les éclairages afin de rajouter du sens et une beauté impalpable à ce que la vie lui offre déjà.
Cette exposition est une réponse à celle de Davide Cantoni en ceci que l’un et l’autre artistes explorent ce que,
sans manquer d’un léger cynisme, les êtres humains savent faire de mieux: la guerre et l’exercice de leur métier. Par
la poésie de l’art, l’un déconstruit les conflits, l’autre construit une encyclopédie de l’activité humaine et tous deux
dressent un panorama de notre monde, des deux faces d’une même médaille, celle de ces humains, très, tellement,
jamais trop humains...

For its third exhibition since its inauguration, H Gallery presents the first solo shows in France of Davide Cantoni
and Roman Jehanno.
Through this dialogue, the Italian-American artist Davide Cantoni, who is already part of MoMA collections and
the young French artist, Roman Jehanno, who won the Hasselblad Masters Prize, explore what men can do best:
War and Work. Using a unique technique of drawing for the American artist and using photography for the
French artist, they both present a panorama of our world, of both sides of the same medal, that of these human
beings, very, so, never too human...
Opening on Friday November 25, 2016 from 6pm to 9 pm.

Deux expositions personnelles
Davide Cantoni, whose works are collected, among others, by the MoMA, analyzes the conflicts of the planet
as reported by the media and in particular, by the New York Times. Over the years, the artistic practice of the
Italian-American artist, who has lived and worked for 20 years in New York, has focused on the way our society
presents images related to war and its consequences: refugees, torture, Drug cartels, armed groups, devastated
landscapes. Our society being consumed by these images, he designed a large installation entitled 111 Years from
a hundred and eleven burned drawings where he recorded and mapped, year after year, all the conflicts that broke
out on earth between 1900 and 2010.
For the first personal exhibition in France of Davide Cantoni, H Gallery presents his extraordinary drawings which
are the result of sunlight burn marks on paper through a magnifying glass, an obsessive work of precision and beauty
but also a poetic destruction, in harmony with his subject.
Using photographs as models for his burned drawings, the artist creates works that, while imitating the photographic
process in their form, are also firmly anchored in fine arts traditions, especially within their composition. The paper is
first made photosensitive by the graphite pencil and then exposed to sunlight through a lens, so that the combustion
itself becomes the author of the lines and that both positive and negative images are revealed.
The artist examines our perception of current events, their representation in the media and how they are conveyed. Its
intention is to force the viewer to question and to decipher those images which are as damaged as the participants
of the represented events. By making the images more difficult to read, he wants to oblige the viewer to take time to
observe their content and to reflect not only on their representation but also on our society, on those who live in it, on
our actions and on our chosen blindness.
Implicitly, Davide Cantoni ponders on his source of inspiration as a disposable material since the illustrations that he
uses are published in a daily periodical, intended to be obsolete the next day. The power of the artist, his gaze, his
choice transform this ephemeral material into a permanent material, and moreover into a work of art. Beauty, once
again, transcends ugliness, infusing a strange and mysterious elegance into what is only malaise and atrocity. Art as
a means of redemption. Art as a way to give a voice to what or to those who lost it. Art as a way to fight oblivion ...
To enter a historical, perennial time, images pass through a «quasi-ritual of purification» by the most natural and
powerful fire: the sun. This source of life – whose light is at work in a great majority of photographs – symbolically
opposes the death-linked feelings carried by the images. The sun also continues to shine without taking into account
the cruelty of situations. The operative mode used by Davide Cantoni, all patience and time, denies the fleeting and
precarious status of press images. By burning his drawings with the sun, Davide Cantoni elevates them to the status
of traces of a real event, which could have been lost in the infinite and continuous flow of images, coming from the
media of the world. The artist creates echoes to the historical significance of these events and gives them a true place
in our collective memory.
H Gallery also presents the first solo exhibition of Roman Jehanno, a talented young photographer who graduated
from the Ecole des Gobelins. Following the universalist idea of Auguste Sander, Roman Jehanno has travelled the
world since 2014, drawing up a non-exhaustive inventory of the “man at work”. The Heart of Men at Work allowed
him to win, in 2014, the First Prize of the Hasselblad Masters.
This project consists of several chapters, each one highlighting a specific occupation, geographical area or group
of people. His latest series on this theme is recent and dates from the summer 2016. It traces Roman’s journey crossing Indonesia, from Java Island to Bali Island, from the atypical salt farmers who collect salt on volcanic black sand

beaches to the sulfur miners of the Kawah Ijen volcano. This series evokes as much the passion of men for their jobs
as the conditions of work pushed to the limit of slavery, while magnifying every moment.
Roman Jehanno’s photos are inspired by photojournalism, although he deconstructs its components. His works are the
fruit of encounters, research on individuals, interviews, and time spent with his models. They translate ordinary or difficult lives, evoke stories of commitment like that of this bamboo grower who will represent Indonesia at COP22 and
who is fighting against Chinese multinationals to protect the environment. However, the result, the images themselves
are not the equivalent of a reportage. Photographer and artist above all, Roman Jehanno works on compositions and
staging as well as on lighting in order to add meaning and an impalpable beauty to what life already offers him.
This exhibition is a response to that of Davide Cantoni in that both artists explore what, with a slight cynicism, one can
qualifes as what human beings know how to do best: War and Work. Through the poetry of art, one deconstructs
conflicts, the other constructs an encyclopedia of human activity, and they both present a panorama of our world, of
both sides of the same medal, that of these human beings, very, so, never too human...
