ou have just opened the City of
Ottawa’s Culture Guide 2011-12, your
entry point to our city’s cultural offerings
through creative workshops, engaging
exhibitions and exciting social events.
The Culture Guide illustrates the diverse
array of programs and workshops, arts
centres, museums, theatres, archives,
galleries and community partners that the
City offers to begin your cultural journey.
As you browse through the publication you
will be excited by the opportunities that lie
ahead for Fall and Winter.
The creative process can
help to break barriers,
broaden linear thought
and impart invaluable life
skills. The creativity of
children, youth, adults
and seniors can be
developed through practice
and exposure to the arts
and to practicing artists.

Benefits of the Arts
Avantages clés des arts
Key Benefits of the Arts
Principaux bénéfices que les
enfants et ceux qui les aiment
peuvent tirer de cours d'art
Classes for kids and adults can cultivate a curiosity. In doing so,
children can develop a number of advantages over their peers.
Studies have shown that adolescents who are provided
ongoing exposure to various forms of artistic expression enjoy
marked improvements in motor skills, coordination, concentration,
and in other areas.
By nurturing a child's natural attraction to creative works, that child
can enjoy a developmental head start in life.
#1 – Boost in Creativity
Art classes for kids support the development of their creativity while
giving students the opportunity to express themselves.
#1 – Augmenter la créativité
#2 – Increased Concentration
Art teaches them to concentrate in other areas of their lives. Too
often, young people are easily distracted, spurred largely by video
games and television. Carefully formulated lessons in painting,
sculpting, and illustration encourage them to ignore distractions and
focus on the task in front of them.
#2 – Accroître la concentration
Art classes for kids provide children with the opportunity to develop
eye-hand coordination.
#4 – Affirmation Through Achievement
#3 – Améliorer la coordination œil-main
By expressing themselves artistically, young people can enjoy the
freedom of creativity without the concern of potential failure. Art
classes for kids facilitate this affirmation in an environment that
focuses upon the process of creation rather than the end result.
#5 – Ability to Complete Projects
Art develops the ability to take projects through completion.
Students learn to derive a sense of personal satisfaction from
finishing their projects. Though they don't realize it, they're building
the foundation of an important character trait that will yield dividends
throughout their adult lives.

Benefits of the Arts
Avantages clés des arts
Art is very important in helping
the brain reach its full potential.
Art introduces the brain to diverse cognitive skills that help us
unravel intricate problems. It activates the imaginative and creative
side, the spatial and intuitive side of our brain. Art jumps over the
process of linear and logical thinking. It trains the brain to shift into
thinking differently, of broaching old problems in new ways.
This is what makes art so important. It benefits the brain by training
it to think outside the box. It helps children understand concepts
with greater ease. It aids children in getting better grades. In the
real world, the artistic side of the brain helps engineers to solve
problems. It guides individuals to create solutions. Art is the
property of fine artists; it is also the product of engineers,
technicians and computer designers. Art, in many different ways,
helps people make the world a better place.
Art also aids them to manage their behavior, develop interpersonal
skills, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, lessen stress and
attain insight.

Life Advantages
L'art est très important pour
aider le cerveau à atteindre son
plein potentiel
connaissance intuitive.

Des atouts pour la vie
Young people are confronted
with an increasing number of
challenges. Art classes for kids
can provide the head start
they need to scale those
challenges.
These lessons offer the
opportunity for them to
develop valuable life skills in
a non-confrontational
environment. By exploring
their own creativity, they can
enjoy several advantages over
their peers. Later in life, these advantages
can have a dramatic impact upon everything
they do.
