From early evening until daybreak, nightlife in Paris offers so much choice: great places
for a fun night out, crazy clubbing and original night-time activities. At a time when
nightlife in Paris is a subject of political debate and the capital has just elected its
‘mayor of the night’, Parisian nightlife is becoming more and more specialized and
demanding, and is developing along the lines of its European neighbours. Proof of this
can be seen with successful major events like La Concrète, an evening that lasts almost
20 hours, or new major venues like the Cité de la mode et du design, or the new spaces
at the Palais de Tokyo.
The nightlife scene is multifaceted and continually on the move with new venues
constantly opening, particularly in the east and the 13th arrondissement. These offcentre districts now vie with the Golden Triangle and Left Bank.
Events like ‘Night Yourself!’ new clubs and grand new hotels will undoubtedly
take Paris partying to dizzy new heights in 2014.
NEW PLACES AND TRENDS
Paris is an innovative ever-surprising city. Venues open, trends move. A look at what’s
new on the busy Paris scene this year.
> Paris elects it ‘mayor for nightlife’.
For the first time in 2013, Pairisians elected their ‘mayor for nightlife’, a spokesperson
to represent the voice of Parisian nightgoers.
Inspired by an initiative in Amsterdam, Eric Labbé director of communication for the
club Showcase started this project. After a tour of Facebook and then a second tour of
fifty or so bars in Paris, it was Clément LéonR., aged 32, who was elected the first
‘mayor for nightlife’ in Paris.
> Paris takes up new quarters
The East of Paris, formerly a forgotten backwater, now holds the record for new
nightlife venues and concepts, and extends as far as Montreuil and Les Lilas. In the
Haut-Marais, towards Filles du Calvaire/Saint-Sébastien Froissart, trendy addresses
continue to flourish. On the Left Bank, the Seine riverbanks attract flocks of nightbirds,
especially the new Berges de Seine in the 7th which has become one of the capital’s
trendy festive areas. And, The Docks, which opened in 2012 in the 13th, is always
coming up with something new.

New in the East
South Pigalle (SoPi for those in the know) is popular for its sleazy past, festive local
bars, intimate boudoirs and music nights. Sex shops and other hostess bars continue to
be replaced by trendy bars and clubs. Amongst these, Orphée Privé, a bar housed in a
former libertine sauna, invisible from the street. Mottled mirrors, a bell at the
entrance, fine tapestries, white tiles, coloured glass and erotic 1970s posters recall the
steamy past of the venue, when it was frequented by such characters as Jean Cocteau
and Jean Marais. But the changing rooms have been replaced by a massage parlour, the
smoking room has replaced the shower room, and the DJ turntable has replaced the
bath towels. The Pigalle country club, a former hostess bar converted into a rock

music bar, mixes decadent rock'n'roll and low-key lighting for an English atmosphere.
And the trendy club bar Le Pompon, in rue des Petites Ecuries, will soon move to
Pigalle.
La Spledens Factory, or ‘Bande de la Maison Muller’, continues to expand around
Barbès. This artistic community of musicians, photographers and digital artists, which
combine their talents to create numerous projects, occupy the Maison Muller in the
street of the same name. After the Café Rosie, they created the Blue Club, an
alternative venue with a surface area of 200 m² on two levels. Shows, offbeat cabarets,
bloggers’ and journalists’ favourites, pop, folk and French chanson concerts, DJ sets
and clubbing throughout the week. At the Barbès crossroads, the Louxor cinema
reopened last spring. Decorated in neo-Egyptian style, it is popular with bobos in the
north-east of Paris, who enjoy its top-floor bar, with its stunning view of Sacré-Coeur.
In the heart of the popular 10th, between metros Château d’Eau and Strasbourg SaintDenis, Turkish kebab and grocery shops are rubbing shoulders more and more with
trendy addresses, notably thanks to the influence of the Moussié brothers and the
agency La Clique, at the head of the majority of hip addresses in the district. After the
Point Ephémère, Jeannette, Mauri’7 and Le Napoléon, Le Fantôme, La Quincaillerie and
Le Parisien are the latest fashionable addresses. Signed La Clique, renowned for trendy
addresses (La Fidélité, Chez Moune, Le Lautrec, etc.), Le Fantôme, with its games
arcade and lower-ground floor electro-rock club, is a great hit with geeks and arty
types from the neighbouring ad agencies. And the Quincaillerie, lounge bar with lowkey lighting is ideal for enjoying a quiet cocktail in retro-Bohemian decor signed Laura
Gonzales. Like other addresses by the Moussié brothers, Le Parisien cultivates a
‘Parisian urchin’ style blended with futuristic touches.
Bars with a view contribute to the success of Belleville and Ménilmontant, districts on
a hill which now buzz like the lively neighbouring Oberkampf district. Le Perchoir, a
roof-top New York-style venue at the top of an industrial building, offers a panoramic
view of Paris, to admire with a cocktail and tapas. The paved terrace of O’Paris, on the
site of the former Mer à boire, dominates the capital from the heights of the Parc de
Belleville.

Les docks
On quai d’Austerlitz, Les docks - cité de la mode et du design, opened in 2012,
continues to attract restaurants, shops, bars and hype clubs. Newly-arrived from New
York, the terrace restaurant M.O.B. offers burgers and other American specialities in
vegetarian versions, in a space envisioned by Cyril Aiouzerate, co-founder of Mama
Shelter. The Wanderlust, created by the Savoir Faire group – recognized for their
experience in producing artists – and its two Parisian clubs (Social Club and Silencio),
comprises a terrace by the Seine offering a raft of activities (yoga, cooking, etc.), an
indoor and outdoor restaurant and a 386 m² club. Also here is the roof-top club Nüba,
created by La Clique (Le Baron, Chez Moune, etc.), with a large ‘beach-inspired’
terrace with loungers and DJ hut, and a programme of concerts every evening between
electro sets. Finally, the Moon Roof offers a huge heated terrace where customers can
smoke hookah and see live shows and stand-up comedies.

The Berges
The new trendy district for going out on the water is to be found between Port de
Solférino and Port du Gros Caillou, including Port des Invalides. Named ‘Les Berges’
(‘Banks’), this stretch bordering the Seine has food trucks, bars, restaurants and a host
of fun, creative and sporting activities. Rosa Bonheur, the famous guinguette at ButtesChaumont, will open a Left Bank Rosa Bonheur sur Seine version on a barge below the
Pont Alexandre III. The Showcase, located under the same bridge for three years has a
new neighbour, the Faust, a 2,100 m² restaurant, bar and performance space in the
left abutment of the edifice with an outdoor heated terrace. This 650 m² cafe will host
concerts and other cultural activities.

> All-day clubbing
Created in 2013 and the only regular afterwork event, ‘La Concrète’, has
revolutionized the world of clubbing in Paris and has been elevated to the rank of an
institution. It is a party venue on the model of Berlin underground evenings, with
events lasting from 6am in the morning on Sunday to 2am in the morning on Monday.
Organized approximately two Sundays per month, these events bring together the best
of European DJs on a boat that sways to electro, techno and house rhythms.

Since its redesign in 2012, the Palais de Tokyo, a landmark site for contemporary art in
Paris, has unveiled two new experimental rooms to the public.
The YOYO club is housed on the lower ground floor of the restaurant Monsieur Bleu, on
the site of the legendary Cinémathèque. This concrete 900 m² space, which can be
converted into a cinema auditorium and conference room, is used for rock and electro
concerts, and dancing, but is specifically devoted to private hire events ‘fashion shows,
film screenings, etc.).
Situated on level 1, Le Point Perché, is a 200 m² stage devoted to the upcoming
international scene that hosts talks, performance, concerts and screenings.

> Bars and evenings full of fun
One of the year’s major trends is the Parisian craze for places to play games at, in the
vein of Titty Twister. Le Fantôme, designed by La Clique has a very large room with
pinball machines, old game consoles, table football and other arcade games in a retrodecor setting and attracts a large crowd. The Gossima Ping Pong bar follows a new
wave of table-tennis bars that has already visited New York and Berlin, and boasts eight
table-tennis tables, a stage and two bars over two floors. For more fun, karaoke is back
in fashion. After monthly live ‘kararockés’ by Nicolas Ullmann at the Bus palladium,
and ‘Kara-Okay’ evenings every two months by the bloggers of the magazine
Retard at the Espace B, there is now karaoke at Orphée Privé on Thursday and at
Pigalle Country Club on Tuesday.

> Bars and retro clubs
The retro movement is in vogue in Paris and takes many forms. Tiny bars and clubs in
the style of those of the American 1920s prohibition years, former cabarets and hostess
bars, establishments that are intimate, dark, cosy, or candle-lit are more and more
numerous in all districts of the capital, as is evident in the number of venues recently
decorated by well-known designers: Dorothée Meilichzon (Ballroom du Beef Club,
Compagnie des vins surnaturels, Prescription cocktail club, etc.) and Laura Gonzalez
(Schmuck, Regine, La Belle Epoque, etc.).
Some are retro in style with decoration, ‘like at granny’s house’ with yellowing posters
and pans (Le Béguin, Marlusse et Lapin, Le Cinquante, etc.), whilst others celebrate
past eras, like the Kremlin and its ex-USSR decor, the atmosphere of 1930s China, or
the Petite Taverne, a tribute to Pigalle and the grande époque with its references to
Mesrine, its cheeky frescoes, etc … Finally, for fans of nostalgia, there are ‘authentic’
bars that have retained their character of popular districts, like the legendary Folies
de Belleville, Divette de Montmartre or Zorba.

Cocktail bars are undoubtedly one of the hottest trends on the Paris nightlife scene.
The art of mixology has long been part of the scene in top hotel bars, but it is now a
specialism of many bars in Paris, as in New York and London. Without being exclusive,
these bars have a chic look along with their bartenders, and often, have another
concept too. The new Lockwood, for example mixes the idea of a coffee shop during
the daytime with a cocktail cellar in the evening. At the Sherry Butt, the barmen take
into account the state of mind and even the palate of their client to concoct a bespoke
cocktail. At the Calbar, as its name indicates, the waiters wear boxer shorts, and the
Art Room offers artistic experiences such as the sound broadcasting of works by
writers, philosophers and psychoanalysts in the toilets.

These ultra-hip, edgy and hidden away clubs, are more than select, they represent the
latest trends in clubbing and have a very intimate feel. Small confidential club bars for
partying can be found all over Paris and offer special moments, far from the crowd.
Near to the Arc de Triomphe, Miou-Miou features elegant decor of the 1960s and 70s
interspersed with iconic portraits of female cinema stars. Cocktails and retro French
songs contribute to the exclusive atmosphere of this establishment. Housed in the
lower ground floor of the eponymous restaurant, the Très Honoré is decorated in
speakeasy style by designer Alexis Mabille and attracts white-collar workers from the
Marché Saint-Honoré district and customers from Castel and Régine. On the Left Bank,
the Don Camilo cabaret is home to the exclusive Don-K night salon. The Hôtel du
temps, renovated in a retro style by the designer Alix Thomsen, is the new stamping
ground for night owls — artists, musicians, actors, who hold impromptu parties and
concerts on the lower-ground floor. With a piano, sofas and a small dance floor, it is
like a mini club in an apartment. At La petite Taverne, a former hostess bar at Pigalle,
taken over by an ex-associate of the Social Club, the decor remains the same. The bar
offers an eclectic programme to dance to on its small dance floor.

Those with sea legs, who wish to party will enjoy a night out at one of the bars and
clubs on the water for a drink or to see a concert. Below the BNF, around the quai
François Mauriac and quai de la Gare, there is a multitude of barges for having a drink,
clubbing, dining out or going to a concert. Another option is the new ‘Berges de Seine’

> Electro clubs and partying
Some night spots specialize in electro music. There are lots of places that are great for
dancing to the sound of electro music mixed by a DJ. Electro nights are organized at
the Grand Palais and the Palais de Tokyo and also at clubs in the capital for some highly
colourful evenings. From 6 to 9 June 2014, the second edition of the Weather Festival
will take place; a three-day three-night marathon of electro music. Recently, the Gaîté
Lyrique, a temple of digital culture, has started featuring electro music with ‘Nuits de
la Gaîté’ once a month. At Badaboum, a new concert-bar-club venue in the Bastille
district, pop-rock-electro nights are hosted in an industrial but cosy decor. New venue
Malibu, a former African restaurant, has transformed into a pizzeria and houses a club
in its cellar which is entirely dedicated to all types of electro music. At the Zigzag,

which has replaced the Pavillon Champs-Elysées, the line-up is managed by the former
artistic directors of the Showcase.

Numerous places can rightly proclaim themselves to be rock venues, covering all the
varied and wonderful spectrum of the genre. Every possible style of rock, indie, punk,

> Alternative scenes
Although alternative music is often played at mainstream Paris venues like the Point
Ephemère, the Flèche d’Or or the Nouveau Casino, some places like the Boule Noire are

known for their particular alternative rock identity. The Voûtes, in the 13th
arrondissement is a favourite venue for experimental rock and hosts the well-known

Cabarets and music-hall shows and revues with dance, song, humour, magic and
colourful costumes are quintessentially Parisian. The legendary French cancan
continues to liven up Parisian nights in the city’s internationally-renowned cabarets.
But that is not all; cabarets and music halls also stage other types of shows:
transformist shows and performances by different types of artistes (magicians,
chansonniers, comedians, etc.), also on the programme at many smaller venues in the

Since La Concrète has turned out to be a huge success (evenings on a barge that start
at 6am on Sunday and finish at 2am on Monday), other concepts have adapted this
passion for day-time parties that continue into the night. On a sunny day, various
organizations hold brunches and festive afternoons outdoors at several places across
the capital. La Villette Enchantée invites Parisians to enjoy cocktails and tapas on
chaises longues or basking in the sunshine on the grass. At the end of the afternoon, DJ
sets provide ‘musical siestas’ with electro-lounge music. La Bellevilleoise offers a
range of activities on Sunday during the summer (massages, vide-dressing [exchanging
your second-hand clothes], yoga, etc.). In a venue transformed into a prairie, events
last all afternoon with multiple live music sets. On Sunday afternoons in the summer, in
the heart of Buttes Chaumont, the Pavillon du Lac hosts La Friendly evenings,
attracting Paris’s trendiest crowd who like to drink and network whilst enjoying live
music and DJ sets. At the bucolic restaurant Chalet des Îles, in the Bois de Boulogne, a
group ‘The Island’ organizes copious brunches and offers parents the service of looking
after and entertaining their children. Diablo evenings draw fans of electro music on a
trendy barge near the Eiffel Tower.

Hotels are not just for sleeping in. While hotel bars are an established trend, some
hotels are going further and making them lively open and dynamic places to socialize
and enjoy entertainment. Undoubtedly a pioneer of this trend is Mama Shelter with its
huge lobby comprising several bar/restaurant areas and stages for live music. In
February 2012, it was joined by the W Opéra, an American establishment intended to
bring a bit of New York energy into the Opéra district, and by the arty Jules and Jim, in
the Marais. ‘Soirées Paon’ at the Bristol, every Thursday from 11pm to 3am, have
become a fashionable place for nightlife. At the Streets Hotel (new name of the

Getting around the capital late at night or going back home or to a hotel is now easy
thanks to Noctilien the city’s network of night buses. The service operates when the
metro and daytime buses stop. The metro in Paris operates until 1.15am from Sunday

to Thursday and until 2.15 am (time of arrival at the terminus of the last train) on
Fridays, Saturday and the night before public holidays. It starts operating again at
5.30am (departure time from the terminus of the first train). Other options for getting

What could be better than strolling through the galleries of a museum or a department
store when the majority of visitors have returned home for the evening? Or when the
swimming pool empties and you take the opportunity to swim a few lengths in the
evening? … On the shopping scene, most shops stay open late on the Champs-Elysées,
and major department stores open until late on various evenings. The new
Beaugrenelle shopping centre, recently-reopened after years of work, also has
