What is it that I love about farming? By | par Claudia Hueging, Manitoba My first job was on a dairy farm and when I arrived for work that morning, I thought for sure the farmer was starving his cows because their hip bones were sticking out; I’d never seen a cow up close before! There was no time to ponder what I should do about that because it was straight to a lesson on milking cows. After rib-sticking porridge for breakfast, I was given a crash course in harrowing on an open air 1650 Cockshutt on a length of harrows that went on forever. Even after I went too close to the bush and had to chop some trees down before I could get out, they hired me. It must have been the determination they saw in my eyes that got me the job. I was hooked from that day on. They even had bets going with the neighbours that this city girl would never stick it out. I persevered – determined I was going to make this happen. Photo: Carmen It just does something to my insides… I can’t explain. I always wanted to work on a farm and started my career by applying at farm labour pool in Selkirk in 1974 at age 15. J’avais 15 ans. Hard work certainly didn’t scare me; it was a challenge and I had the stubbornness of a mule, enough to get me through the inexperience and apprehensive looks that I was getting. I proved myself capable many times over and worked there for 9 ½ years. It was at a community function where I met my future husband. I knew he was the man for me. We spent hours sharing farming and equipment stories. We married in 1987 and took over his family’s dairy and grain farm in 1989 and have been working side by side since then. Except for a few spacers in between us, namely six boys ages 22, 21, 19, 17, 16 and 15. 21 10.Promote the Ag More Than Ever cause at your events Consider incorporating Ag More Than Ever into the events, meetings, conferences or celebrations you host for customers, employees or members.
