Northrop Grumman has flight-trialled a
new aerial refuelling capability for the
E-2D Advanced Hawkeye airborne
early warning and control (AEW&C)
aircraft, the company announced on
16 December. A probe-equipped E-2D
made the flight the day prior to the
announcement as part of a wider
engineering,
manufacturing,
and
development (EMD) contract awarded
in 2013.
According to the Northrop Grumman,
three aircraft will be modified with an
in-flight refuelling probe and the
necessary sub-systems for trials that
will run to the end of 2018. At this
time, aircraft already delivered will be
retrofitted while those still to be built
will have the work included in
manufacture. As well as fitting the
probe and plumbing, the upgrade work
includes installing long-endurance
seating for the crew members to
mitigate against the effects of fatigue
that the extra mission time will bring.
The E-2D is currently...

Boeing delivered the first of 14 E-3A

The
Communication

Surveillance/Air Traffic Management
(CNS/ATM) digital flight deck and
avionics enhancements bring the
aircraft into compliance with current
and future air traffic control and
navigation requirements along with
other upgrades, and allows the flight
crew to be reduced by one.
Cockpit upgrades include a glass
cockpit with five full-color displays,
providing
crewmembers
with
customizable engine, navigation and
radar data. “These improvements
allow the removal of airspace
restrictions, which saves NATO flight
crews time and fuel and supplies
operators with easier access to the
information they need,” said Wendy

program manager. Boeing Delivers
