Sirens of Sail
It’s a question Homer himself might have contemplated:
What would happen if the Sirens — those silken-voiced
femmes fatales of ancient Greek and Roman mythology —
got bored of waiting around for explorers to pass by, and
decided to leave their rocks and sail across the Tyrrhenian
Sea off Italy in search of some adventures of their own?
While the Lagoon 39 Iliade is anchored off the
west coast of Corsica, skipper Nathalie Ille leaps
into the water to cool off (above). Carole Rattaggi
and Raphaele Charvet head to shore in search of
potential climbing spots ( far left). Other crewmates study the charts to locate potential diving
sites (middle). ) Laureen Keller and Nathalie
Ille prepare the scuba gear before heading to a
secret location off Corsica. The entire trip from
the south coast of France through the islands and
back was about 850 nautical miles (see map).
Not that the members of L’Odyssée
Féminine expedition were akin
to a mob of murderous maidens.
But the all-female crew of a classically named Lagoon 39 catamaran,
Iliade, were certainly on the hunt
for action as they sailed that same
section of the Mediterranean —
albeit slightly to the west of where
most scholars place the seat of the
Sirens.
Nathalie Ille, skipper of the Iliade
and mastermind of the escapade,
had gathered together the eclectic
ensemble of talented women. With
Nathalie were Carole Rattaggi (dive
master and mountaineering guide
by profession, and rock climber by
passion), Laureen Keller (ecologist
and scuba diver), Raphaele Charvet
(mountaineering guide and rock
climber), Krystle Wright (adventure
photographer) and Francine Kreiss
(professional free diver).
Nathalie had an overarching plan,
one that took them 850 nautical
miles from Cannes, and down the
west coast of Corsica and the north
and east coasts of Sardinia, before
making a quick stop in Elba and
then fnishing up in Antibes, France.
But the fner details of their expedition were sculpted by serendipity
alone.
They set waypoints by word of
mouth, listening to the advice of
local people to home in on the best
experiences in the region, ever
ready and willing to go the extra
mile to fnd the most hidden of
Tyrrhenian treasures by exploring
quiet coastal corners. Each day the
team’s activities and route were
determined by chance meetings
with the people of the region — fsh-
ermen, sailors and artisans — who
they invited on board to share their
knowledge of the area.
Nathalie thinks that many adventurers forget the importance
of local knowledge and ignore the
contribution it can make to the exploratory experience.
During L’Odyssée Féminine, the
expedition was shaped by a series of
such encounters, leading the team
to many secret spots, which they
explored by climbing, free diving,
stand-up paddle boarding and scuba
diving.
By documenting their experience,
the team’s intention was to inspire
and educate others, particularly
women, to seize the day — to travel
and explore, to make the most of the
world they live in and, crucially, to
keep their ears and minds open and
their plans fexible.
In so doing, they shared the true
beauty of the Siren song, without
steering anyone toward the rocks.
