T However, the end of the year also marks the beginning of a new phase for all those of you who will join the Association’s committee during the General Assembly on January 21, 2008. This is a key moment for new ideas and to ensure that the projects we began together are carried through. The elections will once again reflect your interest in our work. We want our future committee members to represent all the EDHEC programmes (Grande Ecole, MSc, MBA, etc.) and we are counting on your enthusiasm and participation! he end of the year brings with it the traditional season of looking back and taking stock. This year was once again extremely busy and there were a number of important changes in the Association. We have a new Director of Alumni Affairs, created closer links between the Students and the Association that led to the resounding success of the annual Charity Dinner during the Edhec Gala and a record turnout for the Edhec Rendez-Vous on the Champs Elysées, developed more support for the Professional Clubs and witnessed the dynamism of the EDHEC communities abroad and, most recently, saw the Association’s return to the centre of Paris, giving you easier access to the facilities we provide on a day to day basis. (see p 24) There are plenty more projects in store and no lack of enthusiasm to bring them to fruition. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those of you who regularly find the time to ensure the life of the Edhec community remains so vibrant worldwide. It’s the members who make the Association’s events so diverse and successful! Edité par / Published by : Association des Edhec, 58 rue du Port, 59046 LILLE Cedex. ELECTIONS 2008: CAST YOUR VOTE! The next AGM will be held in Paris on January 21, 2008. During the meeting we will be voting for 8 committee members. You can help make sure that we get the best representativeness for the Edhec community through your presence, your power and your vote. Every year we try to make the committee more representative and more international. Find the personal credo of each committee member candidate on http://planete.edhec.com Comment fonctionne l’Association des Edhec ? How does the Edhec Alumni Association operate? As its name suggests, the association is governed by the non-profit making act of 1901, and managed on a day to day basis by a team of 4 permanent staff. The committee is made up of 13 voluntary members elected by Edhec alumni, 2 representatives from the school and the 2 Student Union Presidents (Lille and Nice campuses). They take part in defining and implementing the Association’s strategy and meet in Paris in the evening four times a year. Every year, some members are re or newly elected. LA LETTRE DU RESEAU DES EDHEC • N°43 • NOVEMBER 2007 In addition to their participation as members of the Association’s committee, they also take part in working groups which focus on the following 4 areas: communication, international development, careers, and running the association. To save time and make life easier, the meetings are often organised as conference calls. The Steering Committee, made up of the President of the Association, the Vicepresident, the Treasurer and the Secretary-general, meets once or twice between each committee meeting and provides the permanent staff with invaluable back-up support. It manages the Association’s everyday business and follows the working groups’ progress. Depending on their availability, the committee members also represent the Association during the major events that punctuate the life of the School and the Association, i.e. the degree ceremony, the Gala, the Edhec Rendez-vous, professional club meetings, etc. Lastly, three committee members sit on EDHEC Business School’s decision-making entities, representing the alumni in drawing up the School strategy and taking part in Board of Governor and Supervisory Board meetings. SALARIES WHAT’S YOUR REAL VALUE? Question of salary? Work out your positioning in 5 minutes online Y ou’ve just come out of the wage negotiation meeting and suddenly you’re filled with doubt: what if you’re not being paid what you’re really worth? Difficult to sound out your colleagues, impossible to compare all aspects of your pay packet like your stocks options or your company car. But now you can use the personalised salary assessment tool developed by People Base CBM. Once you’ve answered the 110 questions, you’ll have all the information you need in just 5 minutes. The tool has been available free of charge to all alumni on the Planète Edhec website for the last few months (secure access using your usual password). It looks at traditional criteria like your job, your position in the company and your responsibilities as well as direct and indirect advantages (credit time, life insurance, special loans, etc.), how your salary has evolved and any performance-related or incentive bonuses. The recruitment agency, People Base, works in the field of consulting issues and headhunting. It specialises in finding and selecting business leaders and management staff in the areas of finance, management, accounting and corporate tax. “We handle in a number of areas: salary positioning, pay studies, organisa- tional audits, etc.,” Cyril Brégout, associate of People Base, told us. The agency has developed three areas of activity with respect to pay: consulting, sector-based studies and online evaluation. This last tool offers the advantage of optimising the payroll for large firms and helps employees to position themselves. “For high-flyer management positions with an average salary of 60KE a year, it’s not always easy to get access to the information you need, unlike young graduates who can find regular study updates” (see Edhec salary study on our website). The results are available in real time and take into account the different variation elements, also in real time, thanks to one of the most serious and comprehensive questionnaires on the market today. If you want to know more, you can buy a complete dossier for 15 euros or get studies on specific job sectors at highly competitive prices. Many graduates have already tested it so why don’t you take a look and set your mind at ease! In each issue we will describe the career path of an alumnus which shows originality, commitment and determination to succeed or which is way off the beaten track. PORTRAIT PASCAL LEBARD, HEAD OF A PAPER EMPIRE T here’s a feel of luxury as you pass the offices lining the avenue Montaigne in Paris, and just a few steps from the house of Dior you will find the premises of Sequana Capital, headed by Pascal Lebard (1986). Discreet, despite the mischievous gleam in the eye, this youthful 45-year-old is little known to the general public even though his listed company generated a net consolidated sales turnover of over 5.7 billion euros in 2006. In the past year, Sequana Capital has refocused on its core business paper activity. It also owns Arjowiggins, a technical and creative paper manufacturer and global market leader, and Antalis, Europe’s leading distributor of BtoB communication supports. The firm employs over 14,000 staff in 35 countries worldwide and has been growing rapidly, recently taking over Map Merchant and Dalum in 2007. «Hold firm and succeed» Pascal Lebard describes himself as tenacious and loyal: loyal because he has been with the Agnelli family for the last 16 years. He began his career at CCF in the mid 80s and then moved to 3Í SA, a private equity group where he was appointed Associate Manager in 1990. He was ‘headhunted’ by the Agnelli group in 1991 and joined IFINT, which became Exor in 1994 following a famous takeover and the ensuing stock market battle (IFINT/Exor/Perrier/Nestlé/Danone). He worked in the head office at Exor, looking after investments and heading the monitoring committee for Club Méditerranée between 2001 and 2004. Three years ago, the Agnelli family asked him to manage the Worms & Co holding which became Sequana Capital in May 2005. He joined the company as member of the Board, then became Managing Director and today is Member of the Executive Committee and President. He reorganised the holding, refocusing on the paper division alone, selling off Permal (one of the leading Hedge Fund funds) to the American group, Legg Mason, and distributing Sequana’s 23% stake in the Swiss group SGS (world leader in security, inspection and certification services) to its shareholders. His personal motto is “hold firm and succeed”. He knows where he wants to go. He has also invested successfully in other business ventures, including the Safic-Alcan chemical specialties retail group. This enabled him to buy a 22% share in Sequana’s capital last July, worth around 230 million euros, and making him a partner of the Agnelli family who remain the group’s main shareholders with 27% of the capital. He believes that choosing the right men and women to work with is more important than the capacity to decide and take decisions, as your collaborators are the real drivers of a company. At EDHEC, he learned to ask the right questions. He says that being in Lille helped him to grow up and leave his Parisian family cocoon. He still has close friends from EDHEC, great rugby memories, and gained his first steps towards independence and his life as an adult. One thing has never changed though and that’s his determination. While it remains strongly attached to its tradition as a land of welcome, immigration to Canada is actually quite complex and it’s better to do the footwork before you land in Vancouver or Montreal. «The system can be a real barrier for young French graduates. Contrary to what most people think, moving to Quebec from France, for example, is not so simple. You should find out as much as possible beforehand, and several months before the date of departure!» Jérôme Desquiens (2003), business consultant attached to the French Embassy in Canada, told us. First of all, you have to get a work visa. The best solution is the working holiday visa granted to under 30-year-olds, which you can get quickly and isn’t very expensive. If you want to stay longer, you have to have a Canada Immigration Visa. Obviously you’ll have to wait between 9 and 12 months to get it and it will cost between 1500 and 1600 euros. «It soon becomes obvious that you’ll need to get the permanent resident’s Canada Immigration Visa because it’s the most flexible status. There are no restrictions in its use and the length of time you stay … a permanent resident is almost a Canadian citizen although you can’t vote. I began to apply for the immigration visa at the Quebec Immigration Office in Paris and the Canadian Embassy with Elsa, my wife who was in the same Class Year as me at EDHEC. We had to fill in a number of forms, get loads of documents and papers and then pass a medical exam. It’s a long and tiring process. The last stage, waiting for the visa, is particularly stressful. This could be explained by the fact that migrants either come for just a few years and then go back home or else they stay throughout their life. Because of this, their expectations are different. Housing: happy tenants Montreal is one of the least expensive cities in Canada for real estate. With a 500-euro budget, you can share a flat in Rosemont, the gay district, the Plateau du Mont Royal (the middle class bohemians) and around the universities are reasonably-priced areas. You don’t need a guarantor or an agency in Quebec and there’s no need to give the flat a lick of paint when you arrive as the owner will get it done for you. Leases are often for one year (from July 1 to 30 June) but you’ll find that people often move every 2/3 years. Jerome remembers that in 10 minutes, he had the keys of his first apartment while Elsa and Philippe found it more difficult to prove their credentials. «When we arrived we were jobless and didn’t have a bank account there or anyone local who could sponsor us and that made it difficult to find an owner who would agree to rent. The network still makes all the difference in this case.» The people in Quebec are Americans who speak French Even if we speak the same language, the mentality is mainly American. It is not «a little piece of France located in North America.» The people in Quebec are very laid back and informal, very friendly but also very individualistic. They only think of relationships in the short term, even in business. This can be quite disconcerting. And you may be better off in Toronto or Vancouver where speaking French is considered as a professional advantage, and the profile is quite rare. And the French don’t have a very good reputation in Quebec. «You need to keep a low profile and try to overcome the widespread and stereotyped prejudices. The French are still thought of as people who think they know everything, who complain all the time, and who believe Vancouver © shooty - Fotolia.com that France is best (it’s not a good idea to make too many comparisons between France and Quebec), and you need to water down your comments if you don’t want to create friction,» Elsa insists. MEETING IN SHANGHAI T n September 11th, around 25 Edhec students and alumni from the Class of 1987 to 2008 met up on a hot, late summer Shanghai night at the chic, bright orange Arugula Restaurant in the heart of the French Concession in Shanghai. It was the third Edhec meeting this year and a mix of new people and regular participants came to enjoy a drink and the restaurant’s fusion food offer. The atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly, where reminiscing about the ‘good old Edhec days’ mingled with networking for new business possibilities and anecdotes about Shanghai and China. The group left the restaurant around 11.30-12.00 with some participants heading off to the closest rugby pub to see France play Ireland in the Rugby World Cup at 3 o’clock in the morning (Chinese time). Guillaume Laffaille (2001), who organises the meetings with Jun Cao, (an MBA alumni from the Class of 2003) told us “We try to meet every quarter so the next meeting should be in December or January. The Shanghai group is pretty big and we usually have between 10 and 35 people turn up. There’s quite a large community of Chinese MBA alumni who work for international and Chinese companies and live more or less permanently in Shanghai, as well as several Edhec students who are studying or on internship, and a large group of expats, some of whom have been 5 years or more in China although the majority stay for 2 to 4 years, mainly working as managers for French or international companies. There are also a few entrepreneurs.” he French champagne tasting organised by Australia Edhec may have been postponed from its original date of August 30, but when the group finally met on September 24, hosted by Elodie Calloc’h (1998) in her beautiful, coastal glass-fronted house, it proved well worth the wait. Count Audoin de Dampierre (1970), champagnemaker in Champagne-Ardennes, and on a working trip to visit his agents in Australia and New Zealand, spoke to the fascinated audience about his career and the ins and outs of running a champagne company. The highlight of the evening was the tasting of two delicious ‘cuvees’: the ‘cuvee de l’Ambassadeur’ and the ‘cuvee de famille’. “The bottles were presented in superb boxes that came with their own little scissors to cut the hand-made cork rope which had all of us impressed!” Australia Edhec Ambassador Solenne DucosLamotte (1999) told us. 13 Edhec people plus a few friends and partners enjoyed the magical evening, where, standing on the balcony and sipping champagne, they could hear the waves breaking against the cliffs in the chill, late winter evening. The magic finally and regretfully came to an end at around 11pm. “We would all like to say a big thank you to Audoin and to his agent, Mark Dorrell (+61 406 422 366) who organised the delivery of the champagne,” Solenne added. The dynamic group met up again on Thursday 8 November at 7-7.30 p.m. for an ‘Inter-school’ aperitif with partners, friends and alumni from other French schools and began to discuss the next professional rendez-vous on the theme of entrepreneurship which will hopefully take place early in 2008 The meeting was held at the Michael Reid gallery– 44 Roslyn Gardens, Elizabeth Bay – the day after the opening of the Aboriginal art exhibition ‘Aboriginal Objects, Sculpture and Bush Toys’ (7 – 24 November). The film was produced by Eric Julien, founder of the NGO, Tchendukua “Le message of the Last Men”. Threatened with extinction, the Kogi indians from the north of Colombia asked the writer, Eric Julien, to help them recover their land that the coca farmers and the government had forced them to leave. The film showed their vision of the world, their fight and what the NGO was doing to help them. The Kogi tribe is rooted in Colombia’s origins and their contact with the so-called modern civilisation was a culture shock and certainly not voluntary. They believe in respecting the equilibrium of the group, and they refuse to develop certain economic activities so as to retain the tribe’s harmony. Eric Julien’s involvement with this people and their fight was not simply by chance. He became critically ill during a trip to Colombia around twelve 18 N years ago, and he was saved by the traditional medicine of the Kogis. He tried to find out more about them, got involved in their struggle and created Tchendukua. Little by little, they managed to raise the money to buy 2000 hectares of land. Won over by this initiative, Microsoft generously lent its premises for the cause, and this year is looking to promote innovative projects based on the environment in the framework of their Imagine Cup operation. THE NEW MEDIA AND ADVERTISING SECTOR RECOVERING FROM THE CRISIS The creator of the Milka and Stimorol campaigns, Patrick Lecercle, helps us to understand the new situation that’s developed between advertisers and agencies thanks to a new, and informative 340-page book, based on his own experience and packed with interviews from the world of advertising. T he internet completely disrupted the traditional modes of communication used by advertisers. Archaic media methods were ousted in favour of new communication trends such as blogs, forums, virtual worlds and facebook-style websites. Today’s advertisers are floundering, and the advertising agencies are struggling to find the best strategies to adopt. The recent industry crisis put an end to the long-standing love affair between advertisers and customers. More than one agency and brand were left bruised and battered by the ensuing battle. Today, however, a new partnership appears possible. In Patrick Lecercle’s book (1981), the author takes stock of client/advertiser relations and the factors that led to the breakdown. With almost 25 years of experience in some of the world’s biggest agencies (see inset), Patrick felt the full impact of the crisis. At 48 years old, he was laid off and he used this ‘resting period’ to analyse the reasons for the seism. «I was king of the chocolate castle and I became king of the dump,» he laughs. He knocked on the doors of the most prestigious agencies, customers, study institutes and the Advertisers Club and collected a mass of information to create a valuable toolbox. His aim was to help clients looking for a return on their investment, those concerned about the expectations of today’s customers, stakeholders in advertising campaigns and the recipients of advertising messages. Countersites, viral diffusion and mock ads gave web surfers and the public in general new powers. The world of advertising had to adapt to this new environment, organising responses in a space where immediacy was crucial, the notion of time was abandoned, and where agencies focused uniquely on the ROI of their strategies. «This book doesn’t claim to have all the answers but it does provide insight into the advertising sector’s new models of tomorrow.» » Retrouvez des extraits sur : http://www.pubnewdeal.fr/ >> Background Patrick Lecercle (1981) has been working in the world of communications for nearly 25 years. Isabelle Sequeira http://fondation.edhec.com/ Contact : Isabelle Sequeira 03.20.15.45.09 ou Hélène O’Keeffe 03.20.15.44.63 The EDHEC Foundation COMMITTED TO DIVERSITY On October 22, 2007, in the wake of the World Social and Environmental Responsibility Forum that focused on diversity and equal opportunities in the workplace, the EDHEC Foundation invited Edhec alumni and business representatives to a conference-debate at the Rond Point Theatre in Paris to discuss the new challenges inherent in promoting the cultural, social and geographic diversity of students. Four speakers discussed the opportunities offered by diversity and difference during the two-hour conference, with each speaker presenting a view of diversity from their own professional perspective. Frédérique Chabaud, who manages the International Yehudi Menuhin Foundation, focused on cultural diversity and the importance of being open to all forms of artistic expression, which in turn develops the intellectual openmindedness needed to understand otherness. She described the organisation of the Menuhin Foundation, which is entirely devoted to cultural and artistic diversity at international level. JeanPierre Dubois, President of the League of Human Rights, reminded the audience of the fundamental principles of human rights and the rights of the citizen. He suggested that the French are 20 quick to defend their nation as the “cradle of the Rights of Man” but that it tends to be more a case of words than of action. He nonetheless believed that recently developed partnerships between the league and some leading firms are encouraging for the cultural and social diversity of the future. Both Sébastien Duquet (1996) and Bertrand Audoin (1992) respectively General Managers of Planet Finance and SIDACTION, focused on their own professional environment. The economic exclusion that Planet Finance fights against through micro credit programmes enables many budding entrepreneurs to climb out of the poverty trap, while the status of AIDS patients obviously doesn’t mean they cannot be competent and effective economic players as long as the workplace is able to overcome its initial mistrust. Florent Machabert (2007), chair of the round table, summed up the meeting with a passage from the report by senator Bodin that denounced a form of “insider dealing” or “interbreeding” in the pre-business school circuit of the Grandes Ecoles. It is exactly this uniformity of student profiles that the Grandes Ecoles hope to change via numerous communication campaigns aimed at less privileged high school students. The EDHEC Foundation wants to considerably increase the financial assistance it can provide to its students in order to defend and promote this major priority for the future. This introduction to the richness and creativity that diversity can offer gave EDHEC and the Foundation the opportunity to reassert its long-standing culture of difference. Star Ec talent doesn’t come from the world of showbiz but is represented by the top students from the most prestigious French higher education institutions. Each of the 400 candidates from the Polytechnique, Paris Dauphine University and EDHEC, of course, try to outdo one another to get through the competition’s three stages: negotiation, advertising design and public speaking. Elected “Young Talent of the Year” by a panel of professionals and academics, the winner drives off at the wheel of a new car. Basing the competition on the concept of real situations, the aim of the founders was to discover real talent and provide a new venue for students from different backgrounds to meet companies like Lagardère, Crédit Agricole and Mac Donald’s. It’s an excellent opportunity to spot the talent of tomorrow and to meet other like-minded people in the splendid setting on the banks of the River Seine. The 34 Edhec students who form the Star Ec team travel up and down France from campus to campus to find the young potentials from over 15,000 students. “There’s an enormous amount of preparation behind the event” Charles Liffort de Buffévent, president of the Association, told us. “We rely on the alumni network for a number of different aspects. » Plus d’infos : http://www.passworld.fr/ Passworld: travelling for a purpose There’s been growing interest in voluntary work for a number of years now, to the point that some travel agencies even organise cut-price missions abroad. Perhaps you’re attracted by the ‘short term’ aspect but at the same time you find the opportunism of the tour operators rather off-putting. If you’d like to get involved in a short-term mission that will nonetheless have a long-term impact on the local populations then perhaps the Passworld Association, created a year ago by Pierre-Marie Marcelet (1999) and Stéphane Girard (1999), is what you’re looking for. Careers and Corporate Relations Research and Development Edhec Alumni Association Communications Phone: Reception: +33 (0)1 53 32 76 30 - Fax: +33 (0)1 53 32 76 31 EDHEC remains affiliated to the Pôle Universitaire Léonard de Vinci and training programmes and courses continue to be delivered there, notably the European Apprenticeship Track. “We’re very careful to select projects that respect three criteria. The projects must work on the causes rather than the consequences, so they’re not missions that deal with emergencies. They must come from the local populations themselves who are, after all, the main stakeholders in their destiny. And they must be longterm projects. The volunteers are involved in shortterm missions but the projects themselves last several years,” Pierre-Marie told us. After spending 7 years in the pharmaceutical industry, Pierre-Marie decided he wanted to do something that gave his life more meaning. “Our approach is deliberately different. We go in the field ourselves to audit the projects and guarantee the reach of our actions through a certification system,” he explained. The voluntary missions last between 2 and 8 weeks and include Latin America, Africa, and India/Asia (by the end of 2007). They range from the preservation and development of biodiversity to providing access to education and schemes to protect minorities. Projects include helping communities of fishermen’s wives and training young business entrepreneurs. In Uganda, the Graine d’Entrepreneurs project provided young entrepreneurs with technical help. The volunteers are trained by the association and focus on the real needs of the population. The approach combines humility and discussion that is far removed from the neo-colonialist concept. The volunteers finance their own mission while the association guarantees the durability of the projects and their seriousness. The fixed costs are 600 euros and other costs, which depend on the length of stay and the destination, may be up to 66% tax-deductible. “This can give students a first taste of a country and a field before they get involved in longer-term missions of 6 months or a year.” For more information: http://www.passworld.fr/ LA LETTRE DU RESEAU DES EDHEC • N°43 • NOVEMBRE 2007
