With this issue the Bulletin starts its third decade. My apologies for sending it so late. Things should return to normal
with the next issue, which I will send in 3 weeks, on the Ides of October.
By the way, I have noticed a higher-than-usual number of email addresses that bounced back when I sent the previous
two issues. Please follow the links if you did not receive your July (20.10) or August (20.11) issue. See also section ~

THE AMERICAN SCHOOL OF CLASSICAL STUDIES AT ATHENS
ELIZABETH A. WHITEHEAD VISITING PROFESSORS
One or Two Positions

Deadline: October 31
Term: Early September to June 1.
Eligibility: A senior scholar with a significant record of publication and teaching in a North American institution and a
member of the Managing Committee or faculty/staff from a Cooperating Institution. Preference will be given to those
who have not received recent support from the School. Candidates who have held the Whitehead Professorship may
apply if the previous term was at least five years prior.
Project: Advancing research on a project, which utilizes the facilities of the School and enriches the academic program
of the School. Whitehead Professors are encouraged to present a seminar during the winter term (late November to
late March) on the subject of their expertise and to contribute to the academic program in other significant ways, such
as mentoring or advising students at the School and participating in School trips and excursions. Compensation:
Stipend of $35,000, plus round-trip coach airfare to Athens, board at Loring Hall for the Whitehead Professor (one-half
senior rate for spouse, and one-half student rate for dependents) and School housing. Hotel and transportation on all
fall trips and transportation on all winter Attica excursions.

UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG
MARCH 6–7, 2015

The CACW invites proposals for papers for its annual conference, to be held at the University of Winnipeg on March
6th–7th 2015. We invite paper and session proposals on aspects and topics that fit the theme of the conference: “The

Ancient Community”.
This conference intends to consider all aspects of the ancient community, from village to city, culture to religion, and
from the economy through to geography, while also examining relations between communities, between individuals
within and outside them, and between communities and the state. Through the examination of these broad aspects, we
intend to consider various themes that link ancient communities across time and place.
We welcome proposals for both individual paper (twenty minutes) and organized panel-sessions (three-five papers)
from national and international scholars and graduate students. Abstracts for individual papers should not exceed 350
words; proposals for panel-sessions should not exceed 600 words. All submissions should be sent to the organizing
committee, at [email protected], no later than October 17, 2014. Following the deadline, all proposals will be
peer-reviewed, and the decisions will be communicated by November 17, 2014. In order to facilitate and help prioritize
the organizing committee’s responsibilities, please include the relevant heading in the subject line:

THE M. ALISON FRANTZ FELLOWSHIP IN POST-CLASSICAL STUDIES AT THE GENNADIUS LIBRARY

The M. Alison Frantz Fellowship, formerly know as the Gennadeion Fellow in Post-Classical Studies, was named in
honor of photographer and archaeologist, M. Alison Frantz (1903–1995) whose photographs of antiquities are widely
used in books on Greek culture.
The Frantz Fellowship is awarded to scholars whose fields of study are represented by the Gennadius Library in
Athens, i.e. Late Antiquity, Byzantine Studies, post-Byzantine Studies, or Modern Greek Studies.
Eligibility: Ph.D. candidates and recent Ph.D.’s (up to five years) from a U.S. or Canadian institution. Successful
candidates should demonstrate their need to work in the Gennadius Library.
Terms: A stipend of $11,500 plus room, board, and waiver of School fees. Fellows are expected to be in residence at
the School for the full academic year from September 1 to June 1. A final report is due at the end of the award period,
and the ASCSA expects that copies of all publications that result from research conducted as a Fellow of the ASCSA
be contributed to the Gennadius Library of the School.

UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO
STUDY TOUR TO GREECE, SPRING 2015

The Department of Classical Studies at the University of Waterloo (in conjunction with the Department of Anthropology)
is pleased to announce a study tour to Greece in the Spring Term of 2015. The planned tour will focus primarily (but
not exclusively) on the Bronze Age with travel to Crete, Santorini and the mainland. The course (CLAS 390/695) is
open and available to any students registered at a Canadian University and can be taken for either undergraduate or
graduate credit. The course normally runs for 15-20 days in mid-late May. For any further details on costs, itinerary or
