INTRODUCTION
L’adaptation de la tragédie shakespearienne Romeo and Juliet par l’australien Baz
Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge !, Australia) a divisé les critiques dès sa sortie en 1996.
Certains y virent une adaptation pour la génération MTV, avec montage haché, bandeson tonitruante et deux jeunes acteurs américains trébuchant parfois sur les plus belles
répliques du Barde.
D’autres, au contraire, comprirent que Luhrmann avait cherché à respecter l’esprit, si ce
n’est la lettre, de Shakespeare. Certes, les différences en termes de décors, costumes,
acteurs, musique, répliques et accessoires sont parfois énormes, mais il parvient à briser
le mythe tenace décrivant Shakespeare comme un auteur difficile à comprendre. Tout
comme Shakespeare, Luhrmann souhaitait atteindre un but commercial (gagner de
l’argent et financer ses projets suivants) tout en innovant et en incorporant la politique et
la culture du moment.
Luhrmann a déclaré que Romeo + Juliet faisait partie de sa “trilogie du Rideau Rouge” aux
côtés de Strictly Ballroom (1992) et Moulin Rouge ! (2001). Cette trilogie est caractérisée
par le fait que :
1) l’audience connaît la fin dès le début
2) l’histoire est très simple
3) le monde représenté est fantasmagorique
4) le procédé narratif est original (danse, iambe pentamétrique ou chanson).
En transposant l’action à Verona Beach, un mélange de Miami et de Mexico, en remplaçant
les épées par des révolvers, les chevaux par des décapotables et le fameux balcon par
une piscine, Baz Luhrmann a réussi à moderniser la plus célèbre histoire d’amour du
monde, tout en restant fidèle à l’original.

Il est conseillé de donner les deux sujets à préparer à la maison, en prévenant les élèves à l’avance qu’ils doivent être prêts à défendre des points de vue contradictoires
sur les deux sujets. Le jour de l’évaluation, préparer des groupes homogènes et assigner les rôles (Elève X sera « pour » au sujet 1, élève Y sera « contre » au sujet 2,
etc.) et donner le barème.
