Or issuant from a base barry wavy of three Azure a
demi-opinicus Sable armed and langued Gules and
holding in the dexter paw a maple leaf of the last.
Description
D'or, issant d'une base de trois barulets ondés d'azur,
un demi-opinicus sable armé et lampassé gueules,
tenant dans sa patte dextre une feuille d'érable gueules.
Significance
The opinicus is a member of the menagerie of fabulous
monsters used in heraldry. It resembles the griffin
whose upper body is an eagle and the lower part a lion.
The forelegs of the opinicus are, however, those of the
lion while it has a short tail such as that of a bear or a
camel. The design suggests that 880 has the strength
of the lion combined with the aerial agility and power of
the eagle as it rises from the sea on strong wings to
defend and uphold the honour of Canada.
Signification
L'opinicus est l'un des monstres fabuleux employé en
art héraldique. Il ressemble à un griffon dont la moitié
supérieure serait un aigle et la moitié inférieure un lion.
Les pattes de devant sont celles d'un lion et sa queue
courte ressemble à celle d'un ours ou d'un chameau.
La signification est assez évidente car elle suggère que
le 880 combine la force du lion et le pouvoir d'un aigle
qui jaillit de la mer et entame son vol puissant à la
défense de l'honneur du Canada.

Nota
Prior to Unification, naval battle honours were assigned to ship's
names and squadron numbers as if all were on an integrated
Commonwealth order of battle composed of all the units of a single
Queen's navy. Thus 880 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Navy
inherited the battle honours won by the British 880 Squadron of the
Royal Naval Fleet Air Arm.
Avant l'unification, les honneurs de bataille navale furent assignés
aux noms des navires et aux numéros des escadrons comme si tous
étaient intégrés à l'ordre de bataille du Commonwealth, composé de
toutes les unités d'une marine unique de la Reine. Ainsi, le 880e
Escadron de la Marine royale du Canada a hérité des honneurs de
bataille britanniques du 880 Squadron de la Royal Naval Fleet Air
Arm.
