OBJECTIVE 1
Copy and paste a brief description of the objectives from your application
The long term objective of EnviroNorth is to train experts able to address the most critical issues facing
northern environments, and who will become major players of the Canadian society.
We report below on the organizational steps that were taken to operate EnviroNorth as an effective
training program, and on the volume of training that was offered to date. Quality of the training will be
reported under Objective #2.
Progress made: Tell us about progress made towards this objective. Refer to performance indicators identified in your
application.
Page 4, 12/1/14 11:21 AM
Please report on overall progress made from the start of your award to present (at least to Sept 31), but clearly
distinguish what activities and achievements have occurred since your last report.
Progress made towards objective #1 during the previous reporting period:
From April 1st 2010 (start of the program) to September 30th 2012, we worked through the following
organizational steps to set up and operate EnviroNorth:
1. April-May 2010: Meeting of the EnviroNorth director, D. Berteaux, with members of the three
research groups supporting EnviroNorth, in order to explain the program and collect advice on the best
way to implement it. Members of the Groupe de recherche sur les environnements nordiques BORÉAS,
of the Center for Northern Studies CEN, and of the Canadian Circumpolar Institute CCI met in
Rimouski, Québec city and Edmonton, respectively.
2. May 2010: Setting up of the EnviroNorth Coordinating Committee, currently composed of Marianne
Douglas (University of Alberta), Guy Doré (Université Laval), Esther Lévesque (UQTR), Monique
Bernier (INRS), Dominique Arseneault (UQAR), and Dominique Berteaux (UQAR, director). The
Coordinating Committee helped setting up the 10 research and training activities of EnviroNorth (see
below) and is responsible for the selection of grantees.
3. June 2010: Hiring of a bilingual coordinator, Claudie Bonnet, experienced in both environmental
northern sciences and project coordination.
4. August-September 2010: Publication of a bilingual website at www.environord-environorth.ca, which
is the main hub through which EnviroNorth-related information circulates between the EnviroNorth
trainees, the EnviroNorth direction, the EnviroNorth Coordination Committee, and the EnviroNorth
Program Committee. This web site describes the objectives and research themes of the program, lists
members and collaborators, describes the research and training initiatives and their associated
fellowships, highlights eligibility criteria and assessment criteria, and provides application forms and
questionnaires. It also includes a students and trainees section with pictures of grantees and comments
on their interdisciplinary experiences. Furthermore, an intranet section was added to facilitate transfer
of files between members of the Coordination Committee and between members of the Program
Committee.
5.August 2010: Creation of two logos aimed at promoting the NSERC CREATE program.
6. August 2010: Setting up of research and training initiatives # 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 10 (Northern research

applications received.
Performance indicator #1 identified in the original proposal (form 102, page 15) and approved by
NSERC: number of trainees
Target: 259 Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP) trained over the 6 years of the program.
Progress towards achievement: during its first 4.5 years of operation (April 1st 2010 to September 30th
2014), 356 HQP were trained through EnviroNorth (206 since the last report), which corresponds to
Page 6, 12/1/14 11:21 AM
137 % of the total number of HQP we had planned to train over 6 years. We have thus, to date, largely
exceeded our target.
Path forward: Explain any deviations, if applicable, and describe your plans and path forward:
No deviation.

OBJECTIVE 2
Copy and paste a brief description of the objectives from your application
Page 7, 12/1/14 11:21 AM
To meet the long term objective of EnviroNorth (Objective #1), our short term objectives were:
1. To offer a first experience in northern environmental research to new cohorts of HQP;
2. To promote HQP interdisciplinary research;
3. To improve HQP communication skills;
4. To improve HQP knowledge of local communities' realities, in particular aboriginal communities;
5. To promote national and international mobility of HQP;
6. To give HQP a better grasp of northern environmental issues;
7. To train HQP to better seize the needs of potential future employers outside the academic
environment;
8. To promote leadership of HQP;
9. To improve the long term recruitment of HQP in northern environmental sciences.
To achieve these specific goals, we had proposed to set up 10 research and training initiatives
including:
-
northern research field schools for undergraduate (initiative 1) and graduate (initiative 2) students,
interdisciplinary research fellowships (3),
workshops to enhance writing (initiative 4) and oral (initiative 5) communication skills,
local communities outreach (initiative 6),
national and international mobility fellowships (initiative 7),
online course development on northern issues (initiative 8),
thematic workshops on international reports (initiative 9),
internship fellowships to promote links between HQP and future employers (initiative 10).
We report below on each training initiative put forth by EnviroNorth and on the professional skills that
were acquired by students through these training activities.
Progress made: Tell us about progress made towards this objective. Refer to performance indicators identified in your
application.
Please report on overall progress made from the start of your award to present (at least to Sept 31), but clearly
distinguish what activities and achievements have occurred since your last report.
All 10 training activities became available during the first two years of the program. The interest
generated by these training activities was generally very high, with one exception (activity 9). Here we
give details about the content of each training activity and we report on the number of students that
benefited from each of them.
-Initiative 1 (northern research field schools for undergraduates): 43 (28 in mid-term report) students
participated in 9 (7 in mid-term report) field schools in Québec, Nunavut, France, Svalbard (Norway)
and Antarctica.
-Initiative 2 (northern research field schools for graduates): 41 (28 in mid-term report) students
participated in 11 (6 in mid-term report) field schools in Quebec, Alberta, Yukon, Alaska, France,
Germany and Svalbard (Norway).
Three northern research field schools were created specifically in response to the new funding
opportunities created by EnviroNorth:
1)"École d'été en biogéographie côtière, montagnarde et alpine en Gaspésie (Québec)", which takes
students for a full week in the alpine environments of Eastern Québec;
2)"École d'été en environnement, géomorphologie et risques naturels dans l'Est du Québec";
Page 8, 12/1/14 11:21 AM
3)"Géomorphologie avancée on Sunwapta River, Alberta".
The added value provided by these northern research field schools is very important as they provide
trainees (especially undergraduate students) a unique opportunity to experience northern environments
and get a first research experience in these environments.
-Initiative 3 (interdisciplinary research fellowships): 73 (39 in mid-term report) fellowships awarded to 34
(22 in mid-term report) MSc students, 29 (13 in mid-term report) PhD students and 9 (4 in mid-term
report) postdoctoral fellows who developed interdisciplinary research projects co-supervised by at least
two EnviroNorth members or collaborators.
Co-supervision was required to get a fellowship from EnviroNorth and we ensured that co-supervisions
were not just on paper by requiring that the supervisor and the co-supervisor both contributed 25% of
the fellowship received by the trainee (EnviroNorth provided 50%). This influenced the nature of some
projects that became more interdisciplinary in order to fit EnviroNorth criteria. In these cases, the added
qualitative value of EnviroNorth was to push students and professors to think outside their discipline
and to develop a more global approach to northern research.
-Initiative 4 (writing workshops): 45 trainees participated to a scientific writing workshop organized by
EnviroNorth and held at Université du Québec à Rimouski in September 2012. An invitee with strong
expertise and interest in scientific communication (Dr. Luke Masson, National Research Council,
Montreal) gave this workshop entitled "How to write scientific manuscripts for submission to peerreviewed English journals". The added value provided by such workshops is important as they provide
a long-lasting source of training in a critical professional skill.
-Initiative 5 (oral communication): 42 trainees participated to a leadership/interpersonal communication
workshop organized by EnviroNorth and held at Université du Québec à Rimouski in September 2012.
An invitee with strong expertise and interest in leadership (Dr. Serge Larivière, MBA, Office de la
sécurité du revenu des Chasseurs et Piégeurs Cris) gave this workshop entitled "Comment briller - et
rester heureux - au sein d'une équipe de recherche!". 100% of participants indicated in questionnaires
that the workshop had helped them to better understand how to work effectively in a collaborative
environment, how to develop interpersonal skills, how to improve their time management, and how to
develop leadership. As mentioned for Initiative 4, the added value provided by such workshops is
important as they fill a gap regarding training in critical professional skills. In addition, 41 (26 in midterm report) students received fellowships to get more participatory training in oral communication
during annual meetings of Centre d'études Nordiques, BORÉAS, and Canadian Circumpolar Institute.
-Initiative 6 (communication with local communities): 12 (4 in mid-term report) students have presented
their research projects to > 280 people in local (often indigenous) communities in Manitoba, Nunavik,
Nunatsiavut, Nunavut and Northwest Territories. These students learned to communicate science
across cultures and to value local knowledge. They developed their organization skills and creativity in
a Northern environment.
This EnviroNorth initiative facilitating communication between students and northern communities
stimulated lots of excitement among students because it added a strong human/cultural dimension to
their training in natural sciences. Students were challenged through these cross-cultural contacts, but
received positive feedbacks from communities and developed closer ties with local populations, which
then sometimes facilitated their research projects. Students reported they have, through this
experience, developed their creativity and acquired self-confidence and communication/leadership
skills. The added value of this initiative is important because it gives trainees the motivation and
financial capacity to engage in communication activities that bring them outside of academia and far
from the scientific/western culture.
-Initiative 7 (mobility fellowships): 37 (26 in mid-term report)students received fellowships to travel to
distant universities or research institutions and gain a new experience in northern environmental
sciences. Below are listed some of the locations visited by trainees (* indicates locations visited since
mid-term report):

Students participating in collaborations and exchanges with national and international research teams
reported they had gained new perspectives, developed new collaborations and learned new methods
regarding northern environmental research. They also acquired leadership skills, more autonomy, selfconfidence, diplomacy, and adaptability. This initiative has an important added value since trainees are
often limited in their capacity to travel to other universities or research institutions. In doing so, they
develop critical skills that are sometimes more difficult to develop when they remain in the same training
environment.
-Initiative 8 (online class - northern issues): 24 (19 in mid-term report) fellowships were awarded to
students to create online classes on northern issues.
Students involved in the creation of online classes dealing with northern environmental issues indicate
they have acquired skills in project management and leadership. However, the added value of this
initiative will appear as the online classes are fully developed. About half of the EnviroNorth participating
universities belong to the University of the Arctic network (www.uarctic.org/), and we expect that some
of these online classes will be integrated into the University of the Arctic. Then students throughout the
world will have access to the online classes.
-Initiative 9 (thematic workshops - international reports): no fellowship awarded. This activity did not
generate enough interest from strong candidates and was thus cancelled.
-Initiative 10 (professional internships): 11(6 in mid-term report) HQP received a fellowship to do a
professional internship at:
. Golder Associates (Yellowknife, NWT);
. Projet d'Atlas des oiseaux nicheur du Québec (Service canadien de la faune, . Environnement
Canada, Regroupement Québec oiseaux et Études d'oiseaux Canada);
. Nunavut Field Unit of Parks Canada Agency (Iqaluit, Nunavut);

. Avatittinnik Kamatsiarniq (environmental stewardship),Department of Environment of the Government
of Nunavut (Igloolik, Nunavut, Canada)*
(* indicates fellowships awarded since last report).
This gave them the opportunity to better seize the needs of potential future employers outside the
academic environment in Quebec, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Yukon as well as in France and
Iceland. Professional internships allowed students and post-doctoral trainees to widen their professional
network and be part of the transfer of knowledge between universities, local communities, industry,
government or NGOs. Some of the trainees are now thinking differently their future career. They all
indicated this opportunity helped them develop their self-confidence, sense of responsibilities,
professionalism and resourcefulness. This initiative has an important added value because it gives
trainees the motivation and financial capacity to organize professional internships that bring them
outside of academia and in direct contact with potential employers.
Progress towards achievement of targets was evaluated through analysis of questionnaires filled in by
grantees and professors.
-Performance indicator 2 identified in our proposal (form 102, page 15) and approved by NSERC:
Proportion of trainees participating to activities 1 and 2 who had never been before in contact with
northern environmental field research.
Target: 70%
Progress towards achievement: 69% (n=58)(69%, n=28 in mid-term report). We achieved our goal of
introducing many new students to northern environmental field research mostly through northern
research field schools for undergraduates (initiative 1).
Quote gathered from questionnaires:
-Performance indicator 3: Number of HQP participating to activity 3 who were cosupervised by two
professors.
Target: 100%
Progress: 100% (n=73)(100%, n=33 in mid-term report).

sense of initiative married with sense of responsability [...]."
Performance indicator 10: Proportion of HQP participating in training activity 3 who work in a field
related to northern environmental sciences after having finished their training. Reported through followup of cohorts.
Target: 60%
Progress: N.A. Most grantees have not yet finished their training (see section 3.3) so it is too early to
assess progress.
Conclusions
One important goal of EnviroNorth was to provide an interdisciplinary platform for the training of
students and fellows. It is thus useful to note that among the 150 trainees who benefited from
EnviroNorth in its first 2.5 years of operation, 84 were in biology, 39 in geography, 16 in oceanography,
eight in civil engineering, one in biogeography, one in environmental sociology, and one in sociology.
These figures have remained stable since then.
The NSERC CREATE training program in northern environmental sciences EnviroNorth is well
established and our best expectations have been exceeded. Students and trainees who benefited from
EnviroNorth training activities provide very positive comments regarding the training received. Our
training activities aimed at improving professional skills of trainees and at providing an added value to
the training already received. We do think that these two goals were reached, as demonstrated by the
diversity of training activities provided and the feedback received by trainees.
Page 13, 12/1/14 11:21 AM
Path forward: Explain any deviations, if applicable, and describe your plans and path forward:
The only (minor) deviation is that activity 9 did not receive as much attention from trainees as expected,
and was therefore not implemented. We have redistributed the funds that had been tagged to activity 9
($10,000/yr) towards other EnviroNorth training activities, that are consistently in high demand.

2.3 Provide information on all training activities undertaken by completing and uploading the Excel template
that was provided to you by email.
Please consider the following while completing the Excel sheet :
Identify the value added training activities that have taken place as part of your CREATE training program. Include
technical and professional skill training activities (i.e., activities primarily aimed at enhancing the training of
students and fellows) and collaborative research if these were carried out as part of the CREATE program (i.e.,
established or significantly transformed as a result of the CREATE program).
Do not include activities carried out by the CREATE Program Leader or co-applicants if these activities were not
part of the CREATE program. Indicate all co-applicants involved (listed under question 6.1), the type and duration
of the activity as well as the number of students and fellows implicated. Also indicate whether or not the activity
included collaborations with non-NSE (natural sciences and engineering) disciplines and the different types of
organizations listed. The types of skills and experiences targeted should be specified.
It is very important that you use the existing drop-down menus when you complete the Excel sheet and that you
provide the information in the exact format asked for.

3. Training and Research
3.1 Which approaches have you used to identify CREATE trainees? (Select all that apply.)
Advertisements on the university's or your CREATE program's web site
Identification of students through formal networks
Identification of students through informal networks
Society meetings
Other, please specify:
Regular emails reminding competition deadlines sent to all co-applicants and
their students.
Social events (pizza) with grantees presenting their past experience to new
students.
3.2 Which screening tools and criteria have you used to select CREATE trainees? (Select all that apply.)
Resumes
Interviews
Essays
Enrollment in a particular course or program at the university
GPA
Other, please specify:
-Bilingual application forms were created for each activity organized by
EnviroNorth and are available on the EnviroNorth web site.
-Screening criteria are explicit and publicly available on the EnviroNorth web
site. As an example, criteria for initiative 3 can be found following this link:

option=com_content&view=article&id=128:interdisciplinary-researchfellowships&catid=49:uncategorised〈=en
3.3 Provide information on all trainees receiving CREATE training by completing the Excel template that was
provided to you by email.
Please consider the following while completing the Excel sheet:
A CREATE trainee is a student or postdoctoral fellow who participates in the CREATE training program, whether
being paid by CREATE funds or not.
The spreadsheet should only include one entry for each trainee unless the trainee has participated as part of
more than one degree (i.e., participated in the CREATE program both during the undergraduate and the masters'
degree).
Please note that the CREATE Program Leader is required to provide a copy of NSERC's Privacy Notice for
CREATE Grantees and Trainees to all CREATE trainees before providing the first and last names of trainees to
NSERC. If a student/postdoctoral fellow did not agree to his/her name being released, you may replace the
student's name with an alias (e.g., Trainee 1, Trainee 2 etc.). If you use this approach, it is important that you
keep on using the same alias for that student in future reports. Please do not leave the name or any other field
blank.
It is very important that you use the existing drop-down menus when you complete the Excel sheet and that you
provide the information in the exact format asked for.
Further instructions are included in the spreadsheet and may be viewed by hovering your cursor over the red
triangle in the upper right hand corner of the header cell.

No
4.4 If applicable, please explain variations between commitment and actual cash and in-kind contributions.
Page 19, 12/1/14 11:21 AM
There are no variations between committed and actual in-kind contributions.
Cash contributions are received as contributions of supervisors and cosupervisors to activity 3 (interdisciplinary research fellowships). Total actual
cash contribution is higher than commitment ($711,638 compared to
$560,000). This variation is explained by the fact that we granted more
interdisciplinary research fellowships than initially planned.
4.5 Please outline your budget and expenditures using the "Budget and Expenditures.xls" spreadsheet that
was provided to you by email. Upload the completed document by clicking the "Browse" button below.
Please report on the CREATE funds and external funds separately on the appropriate tabs in the spreadsheet.

4.5b Explain any unspecific expenses from the expenditures spreadsheet here.
No unspecific expenses.
4.6 If applicable, please provide a brief explanation for any deviations in the expenditures for this reporting
period and in the budget for the coming year.
1. Natural Sciences & Engineering trainee stipends: We have given more
grant money to graduate students and less to undergraduates and postdocs
than we had planned at the proposal stage.
3.Training program structure a) Program coordinator salary & benefits: The
program coordinator salary was less expensive than anticipated due to
maternity leaves and periods of part time work.
4.Travel c) Collaboration/consultation: We often used telephone conferences,
which reduced the costs associated to travel.
5. Dissemination of training and research b1)Website: Costs were lower than
planned in the proposal because design, content updates, and maintenance
were done by the program coordinator.
4.7 If applicable, please explain specific plans to use any carryover in funds for the next fiscal year. Please
note, the expectation is that the funds will be spent on an annual basis and every effort should be made to
ensure there is no build-up of funds.
Page 20, 12/1/14 11:21 AM
Carryover funds to fiscal year 6 (37 126 $) will be used in 2015 for:
- Fellowships;
- Organizing of a student workshop about communication with the medias;
- Printing of a summary book about EnviroNorth training activities.
4.8 Was the funding ratio of 80% stipends and 20% other expenses respected?

7. Sustainability
7.1 Outline the institutional commitment to facilitate and further the plans and goals of the CREATE Training
Program, during and beyond the term of the grant. Also include reasonable projections for the future
functioning of the initiative. Elaborate on the details of the steps taken to contribute to the success of the
initiative.
Page 23, 12/1/14 11:21 AM
UQAR, the host institution, offers an office (and associated services,
telephone, etc.) to EnviroNorth's coordinator and it is planned that this
continues beyond the term of the grant.
One of the field schools on northern research (École d'été en biogéographie
côtière, montagnarde et alpine en Gaspésie (Québec)), that was created
specifically in response to the new funding opportunities created by
EnviroNorth, is strongly supported by UQAR and is now very successful. This
field school will remain active beyond the term of the grant.
The EnviroNorth website and the online courses that are currently developed
through EnviroNorth are being hosted on UQAR servers and will still be
hosted there beyond the term of the grant. Therefore, the content of online
courses will remain accessible to students beyond the term of the grant.
The links that are developed between EnviroNorth trainees and northern
aboriginal communities have become strong enough that a group of trainees
has created in 2012 ArctiConnexion, an organisation that is interested in
building bridges between southern-based students and researchers, northern
communities members, and local knowledge. ArctiConnexion is supported by
UQAR as indicated at: http://www.arcticonnexion.ca. This initiative will form a
legacy that will most likely survive beyond the term of the grant.
UQAR has joined the University of the Arctic (a virtual network of 140
organizations located throughout northern countries) in 2012 under the
influence of the EnviroNorth leadership. This will facilitate and further the
plans and goals of EnviroNorth during and beyond the term of the grant, since
online classes developed at some of the EnviroNorth participating universities
will more easily benefit students from other universities.
UQAR has shown strong interest to further develop the workshops created by
EnviroNorth to improve the professional skills of trainees. A Committee was
formed in 2013 to build a plan allowing the continuation of these workshops
beyond the term of the grant (the Dean of Research and Graduate Studies
has suggested two financial sources that will facilitate this continuity: Comités
de Programme de l'UQAR and Fonds de développement académique du
réseau de l'Université du Québec).

9.1 Approximately how much time did your CREATE team spend on completing the report? Indicate the total
number of hours below.
100 hours
9.2 Do you have any suggestions for how the CREATE report template can be improved? For example: Were
any of the questions difficult to answer due to unclear wording? Was it challenging to collect the type of
information requested? Has the online reporting improved your ability to complete the report?
The fact that informations about budget and expenses were required in a
different format than in previous reports was time consuming. Please provide
us with report templates at the beginning of the reporting period so that the
required informations can be easily collected.
The online reporting improved our ability to complete the report, but we faced
some technical problems with the template.
1)When we used text from previous reports in word format, some of the
punctuation disapearded. It took us a lot of time to reformat that text.
2)There should be an easy way to save our work while working on the
template and access to the main menu should be easier.

Question 3.3 CREATE Trainees
Provide information on all trainees receiving CREATE training by completing the table below.
The CREATE Program Leader is required to provide a copy of NSERC’s Privacy Notice for CREATE Grantees and Trainees to all CREATE trainees before providing the first and last names of trainees to NSERC.
If a student/postdoctoral fellow did not agree to his/her name being released, you may replace the student’s name with an alias (e.g., Trainee 1, Trainee 2 etc.). The same alias should be used for the same student in all future progress reports.

3.7 Bibliographical references for publications, conference presentations and posters
which trainees have contributed to.
Trainees often fill their questionnaires early in the course of their research project, so that all
references presented below underestimate the number of publications produced by trainees
through all their training period.
Note:
- EnviroNorth trainees are in bold.
- References added since the mid-term report are underlined.
- References are listed in alphabetic order of trainees’ names.
- References are copied from questionnaires filled by trainees and format is thus not
uniform.
