Situated in the hotel the Varennes, this museum presents a
collection of very different objects about the story of
Montpellier.
It was situated on “Place Pétrarque”. During the visit you can
observe a lot of rooms. The hall is the principal room of the
museum. You can find in the rooms the representations of
objects, carvings, paints...
Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:30 to 12:30 and from 13:00 to
18. Closed Monday and during the holidays.

It is one of many folies erected by wealthy merchants
surrounding the city. The castle owns antique furniture and
collection of Flemish tapestries.
In 1696, Etienne De Flaugergues bought a piece and he built
another piece of the castle that carried his name. Flaugergues
became an example for the other folies who was constructed
in Montpellier.
A visit lasts 1h30.

The Fabre Museum is a museum in the southern French city of
Montpellier. The museum was founded by François Xavier Fabre,
a painter, in 1825. It is situated next to the “Place de la
Comédie”. Furthermore, the museum has a large collection of

Confraternities of Penitents are Roman Catholic Religious
congregations; there is a diversity of statues. There are seven
categories of penitents: the white penitents, it’s the most
important group, the black penitents, blue penitents, grey, red,
purple and green penitents.
The place de la Comédie and the Three Graces
Situated between the Opera and the
Polygone
The “Place de la Comédie” is the main local
point of the city of Montpellier.
It’s the center of the old Montpellier.
In the center you can find the Three Graces
which were built by the sculptor Etienne
d’Antoine in 1790. But the original piece
was placed in the Museum Fabre, and it
move in the Opera. Finally the original piece
was placed in the center of the Comédie.
The Opera
Situated in front of the “place de la Comédie”.
The national Opera of Montpellier is an Opera company
located on the “Place de la Comédie” in Montpellier. The
company was established in 1755 and was granted the status
of “national opera” in 2002. The company uses two main
buildings for its performances. The Opera is built in the
Italian style. The first wooden theatre burnt in 1889 and the
theatre was rebuilt exactly as before.

The Babote tower is an old Tower
which protected the city of
Montpellier in XII century and in the
13th century. It is twenty-six meters
high. It’s the last monument of the
“tour des Pins”. The architect who
built this tower is unknown. He began
the building in 12th century. In 1739,
this tower was used to make an
astronomical observatory. Now you
can play chess. You can visit the
Tower if you want.

The Court of Justice was built in 1143 on the site of an
old feudal castle. It was destroyed in 1207.
The Court of Justice of Montpellier was built in 1848 by the
architect Charles Abric. It’s a neo-classical architecture. It is
always used by the Court of Appeals. You can find a library.
