Race Relations and
Racism
In CARL’S CORNER of August 21, 2008, Jean H. Charles
singled out “Haiti and Guyana as the two fault lines of the
Caribbean where the issue of race relations and politics is
still causing havoc”.
Please allow me to interject my thoughts and comments.
First of all I do not understand why Mr. Charles singled out
Haiti and Guyana when, in fact, the problem is a rather
serious one throughout the Americas AND the rest of the
world not withstanding the frantic efforts of most countries
to shove the rather embarrassing issue under the table and
pretend that they do not have any race problems.
Brazil, in my humble opinion, stands out as one of the best
examples. Brazil has the largest black population of any
country in the world except Nigeria, and while blacks have
been an integral part of Brazil going back to the early days of
the Slave Trade, it is almost impossible to find any darkskinned or black Brazilians in any real position
of authority as business or political leaders.
Ironically, when it comes to amateur or professional sports,
black faces are prominently displayed all over the world,
especially in Brazil, the Americas and Europe. Unfortunately,
in those same countries, it is rather difficult if not impossible
for members of the “Peste Noire” to hold even low level
elective offices or be appointed cabinet members of their
respective governments. A black mayor of Sao Paolo, Rio de
Janeiro, London or Paris? A black French Foreign Minister?
A black Cuban Foreign Minister? That would be great, would
it not?
Secondly, I should point out that within the Roman Empire,
as ruthless as the Romans were in their territorial conquests,
they were not racist and, consequently, blacks were allowed
to function as artisans, diplomats, generals, poets,
gladiators, servants, etc. ; that racism as we know it today is
actually a byproduct of the Slave Trade. Whether or not he
supported slavery, Charles de Montesquieu’s rationale for
the abomination known as slavery was unambiguous:
“It is inconceivable that Almighty God, whose
wisdom is infinite, would have placed a soul, especially a
good one, in an ugly black body.”
Furthermore, I should point out that ever since the days of
the Slave Trade, blackness has been associated with
everything evil, undesirable, despicable, untoward, and
sinister. Being black means being the low man on the totem
pole, being offended and insulted and mistreated more often
than any other ethnic group.
In conclusion, it should not be forgotten that in every
instance where the Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of God
appeared and her color was observed, she was dark-skinned
or black. Consequently, there is a distinct possibility that
Our Lord Jesus Christ was a person of color. Black
Madonnas are revered all over the world. In France alone
there are more than 300 Black Madonna shrines. Finally,
maybe, from a purely spiritual standpoint, it’s good to know
that victims of racism may well be in good company.

Your kindness to enhance the Haitian cause and
educate lots of us, especially the young ones,
by publishing some articles (Sylvio Cator), video clips
and the Excel type column of the achievement of our
compatriots at the Beijing Olympics, is appreciated,
especially, the JUDO series.
I started weight lifting and Judo training at the home
of the Alvarez brothers, sons of Major Frank Alvarez,
in Pétionville, Haiti in the 1960s.
This training helped me to participate in the USAF
Armed Force Judo Team competition at the AAU in
Sacramento, CA around 1967.
My hope was to go and study judo at the Kodokan
Judo University in Japan but I was sent to Saigon,
Thang Sanut AF Base, instead.

How the August 26, 2008 ballot will read:
The Children’s Trust
Shall The Children’s Trust, the independent special district for
children’s services, be renewed to fund improvements to children’s
health, development and safety including:
• Programs to reduce violence and keep children safe,
• After-school and summer programs,
• Programs to improve the educational quality of child care, and
• Health care teams for public schools; and
• Promote parental and community responsibility for children;
and continue the annual ad valorem tax levy not to exceed onehalf (1/2) mill?
Some of what The Children’s Trust already has achieved:
• Health teams (including a nurse or nurse practitioner and
another person with a master’s in social work) will be in 164
public schools. When we started two years ago, there were just
19 nurses and 24 health clinics in our public schools.
• A neighborhood-based outreach program to link children and
families with KidCare and other forms of health insurance.
• More than 40,000 Miami-Dade children now have higher-quality
after-school and summer care.
• More than $15 million spent this year alone on behalf of children
with special needs.
• A 211 hotline where parents can call 24 hours a day -- 7 days a
week -- in any of three languages (English, Spanish, Haitian
Creole) for information, guidance and services to help children
from before birth through age 18. That could be about afterschool child care, quality child care, prenatal health, health
insurance and much more.
• Investing millions toward higher-quality, genuinely stimulating
child care.
• Investing millions in a home-visiting program being offered to
all first-time and teenage mothers in Miami-Dade.
How many dedicated funding sources for children in this state: Eight,
including some of the biggest counties, e.g., Broward, Palm Beach,
Hillsborough, Pinellas, in addition to Miami-Dade. In total, these eight
Children’s Services Councils cover two-thirds of the children in this
state.
Cost: An owner of a median-assessed-value home (half the homes
assessed higher, half lower) in Miami-Dade County pays $57.88 a
year. This is not a burden on poor people.

Je me permets de te faire remarquer que le Dr, Miot, toi, et
toute la minorité qui comme vous deux avez eû la chance
d'être issus de ces familles qui pouvaient et peuvent encore
encadrer leur progéniture et leur assurer une éducation
élitique, ne représentez guère le succès de l'histoire d'Haiti,
mais plutôt cette exception qui confirme la règle de l'échec
patent d'un peuple qui a failli depuis Jean-Jacques
Dessalines, qui se voulait être le seul noble en Haiti,
jusqu'aux plus récents qui prônent l'idée du :"naje pou w
soti".
Je suis désolée, de devoir opposer à cette thèse que véhicule
ta phrase: "Dr. Miot and Jean H. Charles are the prototype of
the success story of Haiti", Nous sommes, tous, tous,
coupables, car l'histoire d'un pays est représentative d'un
peuple, de la majorité de ses citoyens.
Et, tant que dans notre pays, on ne cessera de vivre en
"chak koukouy klere pou je-l" et que nous n'aurons pas
compris qu'il faut inculquer le sens civique à nos
concitoyens et l'appliquer dans notre comportement
quotidien, en développant des réflexes de vrais citoyens
haitiens, nous n'irons nulle part. Tant que nous nous
accrochons au passé, sans prendre en compte les leçons à en
tirer pour vivre au présent avec tout ce que cela suppose de
sacrifices et de détermination, nous n'irons nulle part. Tant
que nous nous bornerons à "palabrer", 'philosopher" et
"rêver" sans avoir l'honnêteté et le courage de construire les
structures de concrétisation de nos rêves de peuple, nous
n'irons nulle part. Tant que nous ne cesserons pas d'être
d'une complexion de peau et d'une classe pour devenir
HAITIENS, tout court, NOUS N’IRONS NULLE PART.
Soyons un peuple unifié et uni et laissons tomber ces superrégurgitations du passé, pour chercher, chercher et trouver
enfin des solutions pour remédier a ce présent qui va à
contre-courant des temps modernes. La solution ne viendra,
justement, que de tous ceux qui, comme vous, le Dr. Miot et
toi, avez appris du passé ce qu'il faudrait en corriger pour
lui reconstruire un présent qui nous honore, et qui lui
assurent un avenir digne.Des visionnaires. Nous sommes,

PORT-AU-PRINCE Août 2008 – Tout est négociable
en ce moment. Dans les grands marchandages
conduits entre le palais national d’un côté et de l’autre
un petit groupe de sénateurs et les partis politiques
qu’ils représentent, on en est venu à mettre tout sur la
table.
Cela a commencé par les titulaires des postes
ministériels du prochain gouvernement. En échange
de la ratification du programme de gouvernement du
Premier ministre ratifié Mme Michèle Duvivier
Pierre-Louis.
D’abord il était dit que le Président René Préval ne
formerait pas le prochain gouvernement avec les
partis politiques et qu’à mi-mandat (« deuxième mitemps ») il veut un gouvernement plus cohérent.
Histoire aussi de ne donner aucun avantage à aucun
parti alors que les trois prochaines années seront
marquees par d’importantes compétitions
électorales.
Ernest Bennett a succombé
à des complications cardiovasculaires.
M. Ernest Bennett, doyen de la presse haïtienne, est
décédé le mardi 12 août 2008, suite à des
complications cardiovasculaires, a-t-on appris. M.
Bennett était l’auteur de la chronique «Dits et non
dits» paraissant hebdomadairement dans Le
Nouvelliste.
Parti à l’Hôpital Baptiste de Miami se faire soigner
pour un cancer des poumons, M. Ernest Bennett est
décédé le mardi 12 août 2008, suite à des
complications cardiovasculaires
Ernst Bennett était le père de l’ancienne première
dame, Michèle Bennett Duvalier. Homme d’affaires,
journaliste et romancier, l’ancien beaupère de JeanClaude Duvalier, qui avait notamment connu l’exil et
la prison, était très diminué ces dernières semaines.

Forez, puis pompez le pétrole d'Haïti !
Les indices justifiant des explorations de l'or noir en
Haïti sont encourageants. En plein choc pétrolier,
quelque 4 compagnies voudraient des concessions de
l'Etat haïtien pour faire jaillir du pétrole.
Le pétrole a atteint le seuil des 140 dollars américain le
baril. En plein choc pétrolier, Haïti qui importe chaque
année des centaines de millions de dollars de diesel, rien
que pour produire de l'électricité, semble avoir une carte
à jouer. Ses petits gisements jadis méprisés suscitent
maintenant de l'intérêt. « Nous avons reçu quatre
demandes de permis d'exploration pétrolière, a confié
l'ingénieur Dieuseul Anglade, directeur général du Bureau
des Mines et de l'Energie. L'Etat haïtien veut s'assurer que
ces compagnies disposent de l'expertise en la matière »,
a-t-il ajouté. « Nous avions eu des indices encourageants
qui justifient la poursuite de l'exploration de l'or noir qui
s'est arrêtée en 1979 », a-t-il estimé.
Quelque 11 puits dont certains d'une profondeur de 2944
mètres ont été forés à la Plaine du Cul- de- sac, au
Plateau Central et à l'Ile de La Gonâve. Des indices en
surface ont été trouvés dans la presqu'île du sud et sur la
côte nord, a expliqué l'ingénieur Anglade qui croit dur
comme fer que le contexte économique prête à ces
explorations.
Selon un mémo daté du 16 août 1979 du maître foreur
François Lamothe, remis à M. Emmanuel Bouillon, cinq
grands puits ont été forés à Porto Suel (Maissade) d'une
profondeur de 9000 pieds, à Bebernal, 9000 pieds, à BoisCarradeux (Ouest), à Dumornay, sur la route de Frère et
près du chemin de fer de Saint-Marc. Un échantillon, une
« carotte » (réservoir de pétrole) remontée du puits de
Saint-Marc, dans l'Artibonite, a subi une analyse physicochimique, à Munich, en Allemagne, à l'initiative de M.
Bouillon. « Le résultat de l'analyse obtenu le 11 octobre
1979, a révélé des traces de pétrole », a confié l'ingénieur
Willy Clémens qui s'était rendu dans le pays des
Germains.
« Il faut forer puis pomper le pétrole d'Haïti, si nous en
avons réellement, a déclaré, sceptique, un géologue un
peu agacé par les déclarations sans preuve scientifique. Si
nous avons de l'or noir, nos chers amis de la communauté
internationale et Hugo Chavez doivent nous aider afin de
réaliser des études. Rien que pour avoir le coeur net », at-il insisté.
Le pétrole a atteint le seuil pris des 140 dollars le baril
lundi dernier. En dépit des promesses de l'OPEP
d'augmenter la production de l'or noir pour calmer les
craintes du marché, les gros consommateurs
s'empressent de constituer des stocks stratégiques en
prévision de l'hiver. Même si les cours sont repassés sous
la barre des 135 $, les analystes s'accordent sur des
courbes ascendantes qui risquent de toucher les 150 voire
les 200 $ d'ici à la fin de l'année.
En Haïti où plane le flou sur les véritables potentiels
pétrolifères, certains disent : Forez, puis pompez le
pétrole d'Haïti ! S'il y en a...

Comment cela va?
'Black Power' aux Olympiades & l'effet de la suggestion.
Dans mes textes précédents j'ai parlé de la superiorité
physiologique du noir sous les tropiques, ou sa peau le
protège contre les rayons infrarouges causant souvent les
brulûres de soleil ou 'coup' de soleil, et de celle du blanc
ou du caucasien sous les latitudes nordiques où sa peau
le protège plus que le nègre des pénétrants et puissants
rayons ultraviolets. On peut avoir du mal à comprendre
ceci mais je vais vous donner l'explication nécessaire.
La mélanine déterminant la couleur noire de la peau
permettrait l'absorption ou/et la neutralisation des
rayons infra-rouges; une surface est aussi noire parce
qu'elle absorbe les rayons lumineux ou rayons visibles qui
se situent entre les infrarouges et les ultraviolets. La
peau blanche n'a pas cette protection contre les
infrarouges, mais elle est mieux protégée contre les
ultraviolets, étant plus épaisse et renvoyant la lumière
solaire, ce qui la rend blanche à notre oeil.
La raison de cette différence dans la peau est le
métabolisme du calcium et la synthèse de la vitamine D;
la peau joue un role important dans le métabolilsme et
l'absorption de cettte vitamine qui y est fabriquée sous
l'effet des UV sur les sterols de la peau. Près des pôles où
les rayons UV sont les plus dangereux la peau n'a que
faire de cet excès d'UV. Loin des pôles, elle en est
fortement en quête.
Qu'en est-il maintenant de l'insulte de Tommy Smith et
de son compagnon aux olympiades de Mexico?. Le 'Black
Power' a été un mouvement révolutionaire ou de réponse
à l'apartheid et au préjugé racial aux USA et la fierté des
noirs qui ne se considéraient plus inférieurs mais
défavorisés. Cette défaveur avait été causée par un
'peuple' ou une 'race' tyrannique ou, mieux, par la
tyrannie éxercée par les gens d'une certaine race ou de
certains peuples contre la race noire, apres la fin de son
esclavage, et qui avait fait croire à l'infériorité générique
des noirs, surtout en matière intellectuelle, alors que les
statistiques ne révélaient que des causes économiques et
l'oppression sociale. La réponse avait été rapide et
Tommy Smith et son compagnon avaient été expulsés des
olympiques pour leur comportement anti-olympien.
Hier, l'athlete Angelo Taylor, pour arrêter le déclin
américain dans les épreuves d'athlétisme, a porté des
lunettes noires qui furent, un temps, l'insigne des
panthères noires et qui sont souvent l'insigne de
l'autorité; il a pu, finalement, mener ses compatriotes à la
victoire dans les 400 mètres-haies, mais il avait tout ce
droit. Ce qu'il a fait, en réalité, a été l'appel à la
suggestion, à la motivation et à la fierté personnelles et
ceci aurait marché. Bravo pou Angelo!
Nous devons retenir que la domination et l'opression d'un
peuple, d'une population ou tout simplement d'un groupe
par un autre s'est toujours rencontrée dans l'histoire de
l'humanité et ne cessera jamais, bien que n'ayant rien de
génrique. Parce que cette domination ne peut conduire à
l'évolution générique des races modernes ou y conduit
peu, elle aboutit plus souvent à des révolutions sociales.
