of The Law Society of Upper Canada pe1form
is to call to the Bar those who have completed
law school, articling and the Bar Admission
Course.

It is a long educational process. but an important
one. It is the means by which we assure the people
of Ontario that members of our profession have
the knowledge, skills and values to serve the public
competently and ethically.
Le processus est long. mais ii est important. C'est
notre fa<;on d'assurer a la population de !'Ontario
que Jes membres de notre profession ont Jes
connaissances. Jes habilctcs et Jes valeurs necessaires
pour servir le public avec competence et dl!trntologie.
You are being called to the Bar at an exciting time.
There have been many opportunities in law but
never more than today. Remember, however, that
law is not a trade nor is it a business. It is a
profession and as such it comes with professional
obligations.

profession. II y a toujours eu beaucoup de
possibilites en droit, mais jamais comme aujourd'hui.

One of those obligations. in my view, is that we
will protect the legal rights of people who cannot
pay for our services. Never are we more respected
than we are when we do so. You will, J assure
you. find that some of your most rewarding hours
as a lawyer will be those for which you never
render an account.

he ceremony of Call to the Bar takes place in
two separate procedures.

of The Law Society of Upper Canada, who are
responsible for the governance of the lega l
profession in Ontario, are called to order on the
