Je ne serai pas long puisque un peu plus loin vous me découvrirez un peu mieux dans
une interview que j’ai donnée aux reporters de « l’Echo Pérousien ».
Par cet éditorial, je veux surtout que chacun d’entre-vous sache combien je suis heureux d’être à la tête du Lycée Français La Pérouse de San Francisco. Heureux et fier !
Depuis le 1er septembre dernier, je donne toute mon énergie à ce lycée, à ses élèves,
à sa communauté. Un défi de tous les instants mais tout à fait passionnant.
Pour les nombreux dossiers qui sont maintenant en chantier, je dois compter sur une
équipe qui m’entoure laquelle fournit un gros travail du fait des exigences que je lui
impose. Les urgences du quotidien doivent aussi être traitées et nous nous y employons avec conviction et professionnalisme. Des études, audits et projets sont en cours.
Ils visent à améliorer plus encore notre fonctionnement à tous niveaux, à faire que
les attentes de notre communauté soit satisfaites dans un cadre éducatif moderne et
serein. Je formule le vœu que sous ma direction, cette communauté (élèves, employés
et parents) soit totalement heureuse et fière comme je le suis, de notre Lycée. Je ne
manquerai pas de vous faire part de l’avancement de nos travaux lorsqu’il sera temps.
Pour ce qui me concerne, soyez absolument convaincu que c’est avec entrain que je
me mets au service du Lycée Français La Pérouse.

PRIX D'EXCELLENCE EN ÉCRITURE
PAR JANE BALKOSKI, ÉLÈVE DE TERMINALE S
Chaque année, le conseil national des professeurs d'anglais
(NCTE) -un consortium professionnel de professeurs d'anglais
en secondaire et universitaire, aux Etats-Unis et au Canada - juge
520 élèves de terminale de lycées d’Amérique du Nord et du reste
du monde afin de remettre le prix d’excellence en écriture.
Pour faire partie de la sélection de ce prix, les étudiants de premières doivent tout d’abord être désignés par un professeur
d'anglais au sein de leur établissement. Les candidats doivent
ensuite soumettre un échantillon d’un de leurs écrits, puis, au
printemps de l’année de leur première, ils ont à écrire un essai
chronométré selon une amorce qui leur est alors donnée. Parmi
les milliers d'étudiants qui soumettent des nouvelles, poèmes ou
essais afin de se qualifier pour le prix d’écriture, seul un faible
pourcentage d’élèves est sélectionné. Cette année, c’est une
élève de terminale du Lycée la Pérouse, Jane Balkoski,
qui a remporté le Prix d'excellence en écriture, la seule
parmi trois étudiants issus de la baie de San Francisco à
remporter un prix.

Bénéficiant des mêmes bonnes augures que Jane Balkoski, notre
département d'anglais a également été reconnu par le NCTE pour
« l'excellence de ses enseignements », dont en témoigne la réussite
de Jane.
N'oublions pas les professeurs de littérature française qui méritent
eux aussi nos félicitations ! En effet, Jane a soumis une nouvelle et
a écrit sa rédaction sur un roman qu'elle avait lu préalablement en
cours de français : L'Amant de Marguerite Duras.
Il y a quelques années, lors de son entrée en 4ème et fort de son
intérêt pour l’écriture, Jane avait cherché à s'inscrire à la School of
the Arts High School où elle avait d’ailleurs été acceptée au sein du
département de création littéraire. Cependant, elle a choisi alors de
ne pas s’y inscrire, préférant rester au Lycée, et ce pour notre plus
grand bonheur !
Jane poursuit cette année son intérêt pour la littérature bilingue au Café Littéraire, dirigé par Mmes Feyeux et Tellene
et elle joue également au New Conservatory Theatre de San
Francisco. Elle continue par ailleurs à écrire poèmes et nouvelles,
ainsi que des dissertations en anglais pour l'OIB et de multiples dossiers de candidature pour son entrée à l’université.

Le carrefour des métiers permet de donner
aux élèves une idée du monde du travail et
leur fournit des informations nécessaires à
leur projet d’orientation.
Mercredi 15 février 2012, au CDI d’Ortega, les élèves de troisième, seconde et première ont rencontré
23 professionnels de divers domaines autour de tables rondes où ils ont pu poser des questions relatives aux parcours et aux études des intervenants. Les élèves ont apprécié leur engagement, leurs
conseils et leur intérêt pour leurs questions d’adolescents concernant leur avenir, leurs incertitudes,
et leurs a priori. De leur côté, les intervenants ont apprécié la spontanéité et l’à propos des
élèves. Certains étudiants ont peut-être découvert leur vocation ! Les échanges se sont tenus
indifféremment en français et en anglais dans une atmosphère d’échange convivial.
Adultes et élèves ont apprécié l’expérience. L’interaction a permis d’affiner les projets
professionnels.
Nous sommes persuadés que la parole des professionnels a un écho aussi
formateur que celui que nous faisons entendre en tant qu’enseignants.

PAR ÈVE CHAMBON, PROFESSEUR DE MATHÉMATIQUES
Pour la première fois cette année, le Lycée fait partie d’un programme ouvert aux écoles « Technovation Challenge » offert par Iridescent. Iridescent est une association à but non
lucratif qui vise à promouvoir les sciences et en particulier
l'informatique auprès des filles.
L'objectif du programme est de faire créer une application pour tablettes ou téléphones androïde aux
filles; elles travailleront le coté marketing et conception; elles participeront à un concours et le groupe
gagnant verra son application commercialisée.
Après entretien avec les responsables du programme, M Ritzu
et moi-même, avons constituer un groupe de 10 filles (candidature spontanée avec lettre de motivation: nous avons sélectionné 9 élèves niveau 1ère et une élève de 3ème - nous
avons dû refuser la candidature de 3 filles de 2nde mais le
programme a pour objectif d’être reconduit chaque année et
dans ce cas elles seraient prioritaires l'année prochaine).

Emilie Robert Wong, une jeune fille de 1èreS, a déjà participé 2
années consécutives (inscription individuelle à ce programme)
et a gagné l'année dernière. Cette année le programme étant
ouvert aux écoles, c’est par elle que le Lycée a eu le droit d'y
participer.

Pendant 10 semaines (nous avons commencé le lundi 30 janvier), chaque lundi, nous sommes attendus Downtown (chez
Microsoft) pour une session de 2h. Les filles sont encadrées
et on leur apprend à se servir d'un logiciel de programmation pour créer leur application ainsi qu'à travailler la partie
Business Plan. Ensuite, elles sont encadrées au Lycée par nousmême pour poursuivre le travail sur la semaine avant la session

RELATION ANCIENS ÉLÈVES
Damien Comolli, ancien élève du Lycée, est Directeur du Club
de football de Liverpool depuis novembre 2010. Il est venu au
Lycée à l'automne dernier et a bien voulu rencontrer les élèves et
répondre à nos questions Il est marié et a deux filles de 11 ans et
de 8 ans. En quelle classe êtes-vous arrivé au Lycée ?
Je suis arrivé en 1988 en classe de 1ère et ne suis resté qu’un an
pour aller ensuite à Monaco. Puis j’ai fait une licence, et une maîtrise de droit à Nice.
Vous avez un jeune frère, Loïc qui était au Lycée aussi. Oui il était en 5ème, il habite maintenant dans la baie.
L’amour du foot, ça date de quand ?
Depuis mon plus jeune âge, j’ai toujours joué au foot et été dans
une équipe.
Dans le yearbook 1989, alors que vous étiez en 1ère, on vous mentionne
lors d’un match de foot élèves contre profs-parents « la bataille de Fleurus ». Je cite « Damien Comolli-Augier, certainement un des meilleurs,
aux prises avec Danielle Amet ». Des commentaires ? Je me souviens de ce match, le degré était monté dans l’agressivité
comme dans tous les matchs contre l'équipe parents-profs.
Avant d’aborder le côté de votre carrière, pouvez-vous nous dire en
quoi le Lycée a contribué à votre réussite ?
Le Lycée m’a beaucoup aidé parce que ça m’a permis
d’apprendre la langue. Quand je suis arrivé ici, je ne parlais
pas un mot d’anglais. Heureusement que mes amis me parlaient en anglais. C’est grâce au Lycée et aux amis que
j’ai pu aller au Japon puis en Angleterre. Je suis aussi
allé au Lycée Français de Mexico. J’ai pu m’adapter facilement
à l’étranger grâce à l’ouverture d’esprit que l’on acquiert dans
les Lycées à l’étranger. Je sais que c’est pareil pour mon frère.
Quel est votre meilleur souvenir au Lycée ?
Je n'ai que des bons souvenirs. C’était une année extraordinaire. J’ai gardé des amis pour la vie, je suis tombé
amoureux de la ville, suis devenu supporter des Giants et des
49ers. Ce passage ici m'a marqué. Votre pire souvenir ?
Quand ma mère m’a dit qu'il fallait qu’on parte. Ce fut un déchirement pour moi et mon frère.
Racontez-nous votre parcours professionnel ?
Où avez-vous débuté, en tant que joueur d’abord ?
En partant à Nice, je suis allé jouer à Monaco
dans une équipe de moins de 18 ans pendant
3 ans et puis j’ai entraîné les moins de 16 ans,
dont Thierry Henry. De là, je suis allé au
Japon entraîner les moins de 18 ans à Nagasaki,
pour ensuite aller à Arsenal en tant que
« European scout ». J’ai voyagé dans le
monde entier pendant 7ans.

DAMIEN COMOLLI, ANCIEN ÉLÈVE
INTERVIEW
En 2004, je suis arrivé à St Etienne comme directeur du club.
En 2005, directeur à Tottenham (ennemi d’Arsenal), en 2009
je suis reparti pour St Etienne et en 2010 pour Liverpool.
Comment s’est faite la transition entre joueur, coach, recruteur et
directeur ?
J’étais un passionné de foot ! Quand j’étais ado et que je
jouais, mon rêve était de devenir entraîneur, peut-être parce
que j’étais réaliste et lucide et savais que je ne pourrais pas être
footballeur professionnel. Devenir scout fut une promotion
c’est vrai. Il m’a fallu de la passion, de la chance mais
également beaucoup de travail, et beaucoup de temps
éloigné de ma famille. Ce n'est pas parce que c’est du sport
que c’est facile. Je suis parti d’Arsenal car je ne pouvais plus
évoluer. Aujourd’hui, en tant que directeur, je gère la partie
sportive du club, les contrats, le recrutement, le côté médical et académique.
Expliquez-nous les étapes de recrutement d’un footballeur.
Il y a deux sortes de scouts : ceux pour les jeunes entre 8 et 18
ans (50 scouts en Grande-Bretagne) qui vont voir des matchs
pour repérer les jeunes talents et ceux pour les professionnels (60 dans le monde entier), qui recherchent par exemple
un gardien de but. J’ai rendez-vous avec les scouts tous les mois. On
commence avec 10 joueurs, puis 5 pour enfin en sélectionner un. On
travaille sur le contrat, les aspects financiers et/ou l’échange avec un
autre club. On évalue par exemple un joueur à 15 millions. Il y a des
négociations, le club peut en demander 20 mais si on a une limite à 16
millions on s’y tient. Ensuite, il faut négocier avec le joueur. Les clubs
qui paient les salaires au-delà de leurs revenus me choquent.
Pouvez-vous nous donner un ordre de budget ?
Le budget du club de Liverpool est de 410 millions de dollars, comme
les Red Socks (4e en 1ère ligue), celui du Paris S-Germain est de 220
millions et celui de Barcelone de 800 millions. Les propriétaires du
Club de Liverpool sont américains, du même groupe que les Boston
Red Socks.
Quelle est votre relation avec les joueurs ?
Les relations sont difficiles à établir. On doit garder des distances, on ne
peut pas avoir d’amitié mais maintenir une harmonie parmi les joueurs
et essayer d’anticiper les problèmes. De même qu’avec les relations
avec l’entraîneur « head coach » et le propriétaire, il faut que tout le
monde soit content. Pour faire une comparaison, j’ai un moteur devant
moi, il faut que tous les pistons roulent.
Quel sont les aspects préférés de votre profession ?
Quand on trouve un joueur inconnu qui devient star,
quand il y a un match le samedi à 15h et qu’à 16h45 on a gagné.
Il est aussi enrichissant d’échanger avec d’autres personnes qui
ont le même métier, dans le baseball ou le football américain.
Avant de nous quitter, avez-vous un conseil à donner aux élèves du
Lycée Français La Pérouse ?
Ils ont une chance inouïe d’être ici, il faut
qu’ils en profitent.
Enfin, comment vous voyez-vous dans 10ans ?
A la fin de la terminale, j'aurais dit que je serai dans le foot,
et dans 10 ans je serai toujours dans le foot mais dans 30 ans,
sûrement à la retraite à San Francisco !

Fruit du travail et du talent d'élèves du Lycée français de San Francisco, L'Écho PÉrousien est le tout nouveau journal en ligne du campus
d'Ortega. Ce journal mensuel est intégralement écrit et conçu par les élèves et pour les élèves dans le cadre du Club Journalisme du Lycée.
Nos jeunes journalistes couvrent tous les sujets de la vie du Lycée mais aussi l'actualité et des informations locales.
Le Club de journalisme animé par Ingrid Hazard et Anton Ritzu se réunit depuis la rentrée tous les mercredis de 15 à 17 heures. Il est
ouvert à tous les collégiens et lycéens qui s’intéressent à l’actualité et au monde qui les entoure ou tout simplement qui souhaitent développer leur créativité.
Pour le Lycée, le lancement de ce journal doit renforcer le sentiment d’appartenance à la communauté et bien sûr permettre à chacun d’être
mieux informé de la vie du Lycée !

Et comme le souligne Marc Rossano dans l'interview de Léah Lorget, "Ce qui est intéressant, avec l'Écho PÉrousien, c'est de pouvoir
confronter ses idées et de les partager avec d'autres".
Mais nous ne sommes qu'au tout début de l'histoire et nous comptons sur votre assiduité et sur vos commentaires pour faire vivre notre
journal. Toute l'équipe de rédaction souhaite que vous ayez autant de plaisir à lire L'Écho PÉrousien que nous en avons à le concevoir !

Comme chaque année, les élèves des classes de français de Redwood High School, accompagnés de leur professeur de français, Bernadette Rattet,
sont venus nous lire les livres qu'ils avaient écrits et illustrés.
Le mardi 29 novembre, les classes de maternelle et les deux CP ont accueilli des petits groupes d'élèves dans leur classe. Les grands élèves étaient un
peu anxieux à l'idée de lire devant un auditoire français !
Dans la classe de petite section à temps complet, nous avons accueilli
trois élèves ; Will a lu :"Kelly et les chaussures". C'est l' histoire d'un
kangourou qui a perdu ses chaussures et qui voyage pour les retrouver. Pour finir, il les trouve dans sa poche !
Grace a lu :" Sebastien le requin". Ce requin se désole de sa queue
qui est si longue; à la fin c'est grâce à elle qu'il protège les autres
animaux et devient un héros.
Cristina a lu : "La petite fille qui cherche son chapeau". Tous les
animaux l' aident à trouver son chapeau.
Les thèmes et les illustrations variées de ces livres étaient parfaitement au niveau de nos élèves et les enfants se sentaient concernés
par la recherche du chapeau, des chaussures ou par ce pauvre re-
Pour clore cette rencontre, tous les étudiants ont été conviés dans notre
classe où ils ont, à leur tour, écouté une histoire, celle d'un cyber âne qui
découvre les livres. Nous recommandons à tous la lecture de cet album,
plein d'humour. "C'est un livre", de Lane Smith, facile à trouver puisque sa
première édition est américaine ("It’s a book", Lane Smith, Roaring Brook
Press).
Jean-Pierre Jantet a remercié les étudiants et leur enseignante en soulignant le travail des illustrations et des textes
et en insistant sur la richesse de ce genre d'échanges et
d'ouverture de notre école sur la communauté.
Grace, Cristina et Will nous ont prêté leur livres et nous pourrons ainsi
nous replonger dans les histoires.
quin ! Les auteurs nous ont expliqué qu'ils s'étaient
inspirés de livres qu'ils avaient lus dans leur enfance
et d'animaux qu'ils aimaient particulièrement, comme
Grace qui est passionnée de requins.
PAR KAREN SAUX, PARENTE D'ÉLÈVE
Cet automne, Lucie Bhisitkul, Livia Camperi, et Juliette
Saux, élèves du collège ont brillé sous les projecteurs en
tant que certaines des plus jeunes membres de la companie du
San Francisco Opera. Ces jeunes filles étaient parmi environ trente
choristes de la quatrième classe de la chorale du San Francisco
Girls Chorus, qui, avec des membres du San Francisco Boys Chorus, notamment Isaac Ren, élève de troisième au Lycée, furent
choisis pour chanter les rôles des moines perses dans Turandot de
Giacomo Puccini, et ceux des enfants turbulents des scènes de rues
du Carmen de Georges Bizet.
Dans les coulisses, une équipe spécialisée de “wranglers”,
d’enseignants, et de costumiers, supervisaient tous les mouvements des quarante enfants qui jouaient dans chaque représentation, guidant les jeunes chanteurs dans le labyrinthe des couloirs,
surveillant les devoirs de classe, et s’assurant que tous fussent en
costume et maquillés à temps pour leur entrée en scène. Le plus
dur fut les longues attentes, mais d’après Juliette et Livia, cela
valait l’opportunité de rencontrer les stars du Carmen.
Tous furent impressionés par l’ambiance professionnelle et le
labeur nécessaire à un spectacle de ce calibre et apprirent rapidement à organizer leurs devoirs de classe ainsi que ceux de leur
chorale de manière à garder leurs engagements et répondre aux
attentes de cette organisation de classe internationale.

Décrivant son rôle de moine qui traverse lentement la scène pendant le premier acte de Turandot, Lucie remarqua «nos voix semblaient tellement plus fortes en face de cette audience gigantesque».
Pour Livia, le plaisir d’être dans Carmen fut d’« entendre la musique remplir la salle, suivie des applaudissements». Juliette ajouta
que «C’est drôle quand quelque chose ne va pas comme prévu », et
décrivit comment un des soldats improvisa quand un des garcons
perdit sa chaussure par accident en sortant de scène: il ramassa
la chaussure et la lui lança, conservant ainsi l’esprit comique de
la scène.

TROIS LYCÉENS SE DÉMARQUENT

Nous voilà de retour!
La rentrée est déjà passée, et les élèves talentueux de notre lycée se sont de nouveaux installés dans leurs habitudes hebdomadaires sur le
campus d’Ortega. Les cours et les devoirs remplissent les emplois du temps de tout le monde – mais que font ces élèves en dehors de tout
cela ? Que font-ils quand ils ne sont pas en train de prendre leur cours ou de réviser pour le fameux Baccalauréat ?
La réponse ? Ils réussissent.
Depuis l’année dernière, une élève de terminale et trois élèves de première ont gagné deux prix scientifiques et mathématique ainsi que
deux littéraires.
La première est Emilie Robert Wong, une de nos élèves de première cette année. Faisant partie d’une équipe de quatre filles, elle s’est
présentée et a gagné le Technovation Challenge de 2010, un concours qui consiste à créer une application pour un téléphone Android.
Le Technovation Challenge a été créé pour les filles de plusieurs régions des Etats-Unis pour développer l’ingénierie parmi les jeunes
femmes intéressées par l’esprit d’entreprise ainsi que les mathématiques et la science. Cette année, elle a formé une deuxième équipe qui
se prépare au Challenge de printemps 2012.
De nouveau, dans le domaine des sciences, il y a une sélection pour participer au Nobel Laureate du programme COSMOS à UC Davis,
qui se concentre sur les mathématiques, les sciences et l’art oratoire. Nous félicitons Guillaume Prévot, un deuxième élève de première,
un des quatre participants du COSMOS 2011 invité à présenter son projet à l’événement du Nobel Laureate de Californie, une soirée
formelle qui aura lieu ce novembre à Los Angeles.
N’oublions pas les terminales ! Chaque année,
seulement 520 élèves de première gagnent le
NCTE (National Counsel of Teachers in English) Achievement Awards in Writing. Ce sont des
élèves nommés généralement par des professeurs
d’anglais et qui doivent présenter un essai qu’ils
ont déjà écrit et ils sont aussi obligés d’en écrire
un deuxième à partir d’un sujet qu’ils n’ont jamais
vu auparavant. Le concours a permis de désigner
un grand nombre de jeunes écrivains les plus
doués de l’Amérique du Nord. L’année dernière,
1 649 élèves ont participé, dont Jane Balkoski,
promotion 2012, une des gagnantes du concours
2011!
Mais ces trois ne sont pas uniques
– un grand nombre d’autres élèves
doués sont inscrits dans chacun des
trois campus du Lycée. On ne sait
jamais qui va gagner le prochain
prix !

Objectif :
Créer une option sciences politiques qui soit à la fois :
• Une première approche des sciences politiques avec la définition des grandes théories
• Un minimum de préparation pour les épreuves des IEP (Institut d'Etudes Politiques)
• Un extrait des différents thèmes existant dans l’option sciences politiques des classes
de 1ère ES et Terminale ES
• Une possibilité pour les élèves d’organiser des conférences et de mettre en place
un projet construit
Organisation : 1 heure 30 par semaine le lundi de 16 à 17 heures 30
Lieu : salle de cours avec possibilité d’utilisation de la salle informatique et de l’auditorium
Animateurs : • Monsieur ROUSSEL (professeur d’Histoire Géographie)
• Monsieur PORTAZ (professeur d’Histoire Géographie)
• Intervenants extérieurs pour sujets particuliers
Public concerné : les élèves volontaires des classes de Première et de Terminale
avec engagement de présence régulière
Programme général :
• Donner des éléments de culture générale dans le domaine des sciences politiques
• Mettre en relation des grands axes du programme de Sciences Economiques et Sociales et d’Histoire Géographie
(Première et Terminale) selon une orientation de sciences politiques (Programme du concours des IEP)
• Traiter quelques grands thèmes du programme de l’option Sciences Politiques pour mettre en place
des cadres généraux en Sciences Politiques
• Aborder des thèmes d’actualité en reprenant des éléments de connaissances vues précédemment
Activités :
Une séance sur deux sera découpée entre :
• Une intervention sous forme magistrale d’un professeur ou d’un intervenant extérieur
• Un débat entre élèves qui utilisera comme éléments :
L’intervention:
Une recherche documentaire effectuée par les élèves entre chaque séance
(forte utilisation d’Internet : des sites de recherche seront donnés aux élèves)
L’autre séance en alternance sera consacrée aux débats d’actualités
Trois conférences seront organisées par les élèves sur des thèmes choisis par eux.

Tous les ans, le Lycée organise des retrouvailles pour les anciens élèves à San Francisco
et à Paris. C’est toujours avec plaisir qu’ils se retrouvent ou font connaissance puisque
les promos sont assez bien représentées, depuis la première en 1977 jusqu’à la dernière.
Les prochains rendez-vous seront
le vendredi 18 mai à San Francisco
et le vendredi 29 juin à Paris.
VARSITY VOLLEY-BALL
PAR WILLIAM STAINIER, ÉLÈVE DE 4ÈME
L’équipe de Varsity a gagné les finales !
Dans un match très disputé contre CAIS (Chinese American International School), le Lycée a gagné le premier set 25 à 17. Mais CAIS est
revenu pour gagner le deuxième set 25 à 23. Au troisième et dernier set,
où l’on ne joue qu'à 15, le Lycée était en train de perdre 9 à 5 mais grâce
à de magnifique services de William et de Pascal et des smashs extraordinaires de tout le monde, mais surtout de William, le Lycée est revenu
pour gagner 15 à 11!
Un grand bravo à Roman, William, Pascal, Ines, Matthieu,
Baptiste, Martin, Max et Marinca mais surtout pour nos deux merveilleux coachs Franck et Pauline !
Les joueurs souhaitent aussi remercier tous les gens venus les supporter
au match final(notamment Matteo, Ms. Ritter, Chantal, etc…).

I will be brief because, a little further in, you will get to know me better in an interview I gave to the reporters of the “Echo Pérousien”.
With this editorial, I would like each of you to know, above all,
how happy I am to be leading the Lycée Français la Pérouse of San
Francisco. Happy and proud!
Since last September 1st, I have given all my energy to this school,
its students and its community. It is an ongoing challenge, but one
about which I am absolutely passionate.

We have numerous jobs underway and I have to count on a team,
which is doing an amazing amount of work due in part to my
demands. We must also deal with day-to-day emergencies and do so
with conviction and professionalism.
We are doing studies, audits and projects. They aim to improve
our operations at every level and assure that the expectations
of our community are met in a modern and serene educational
context.
I have the hope that under my direction this community (students, staff and parents) will be as completely happy and proud,
as I am of our school. I will of course keep you informed of all
the progress we are making.
As for me, please be assured that I am cheerfully starting my
role at the Lycée Français La Perouse.

LE MOT DU PROVISEUR
ONCE UPON A TIME
ACHIEVEMENT AWARD IN WRITING
BY JANE BALKOSKI, 12TH GRADE (S) STUDENT
Each year, the National Council of Teachers of English
(NCTE)—the professional consortium of secondary
and college English teachers throughout the U.S. and
Canada—deems 520 high school seniors throughout
North America and in international schools worldwide
worthy of the Achievement Award in Writing. To earn
the award, 11th grade students are nominated by an
English teacher in their school. Nominees go on to submit a sample of their writing and then, in the spring of
their junior year, to write a timed essay on a prompt they
have never before seen. Of the thousands of students
who submit stories, poems, or essays and sit the essay
exam, only a small percentage are selected for their excellence in writing. This year, our own 12th grader, Jane
Balkoski, won the Achievement Award in Writing, one
of only three San Francisco area students to win.
Basking in Jane’s light, our English department has, likewise,
been recognized by the NCTE for “Excellence in Teaching,”
as evidenced by Jane’s achievement.
The French literature teachers deserve commendation, too.
Jane submitted a short story and wrote her essay on a novel
she had read in French, L’Amant (The Lover), by Marguerite
Duras. Years ago, back in 8th grade, Jane’s interest in writing
led her to apply to the School of the Arts High School, where
she was accepted into the Creative Writing department, but
she declined her acceptance, choosing to stay at the Lycee.
SOTA’s loss was our gain. Jane continues to pursue her bilingual literary interests at the Café Litteraire, led by Mme.
Feyeux and Mme. Tellene, and to act in plays at the New
Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco. She writes stories
and poetry and, of course, essays for OIB English and college
entrance applications.

The career roundtable discussion allows students to
get an idea of the working world while giving them
the necessary information to find their own way.
On Wednesday February 15, 2012 at the Ortega campus
9th-11th graders met with 23 professionals from various
fields to ask them questions about their education and career
paths. The students benefited from the guests' advice and
interest in their questions concerning their future and their
uncertainties about it.
As for our guests, they enjoyed the students' spontaneity.
Some students may have even discovered their calling!
Conversations happened either in French or English in a
friendly atmosphere.
Both adults and students enjoyed the experience.
The interaction has helped to refine career plans.
We believe that the training students received from these professionals is as valuable as the one provided by the teachers.

TECHNOVATION CHALLENGE

For the first time, the Lycée is participating in a program offered by Iridescent called " The Tech-
novation Challenge". Iridescent is a non-profit organization which aims to promote
sciences and more particularly computer sciences among girls.
The program’s objective is for the girls to create an application for Android phones or tab-
lets. The girls have to work on both the marketing and design sides, and will then enter in a contest
where the winning group will see its application marketed.
After meeting with the program’s manager, M. Ritzu and myself set up a group of 10 girls. After
reviewing their unsolicited applications, which included a cover letter, we selected nine 11th grade
students and one 9th grader. Three 10th grade girls were not accepted in the program but as it is
intended to be renewed each year they will be given priority next year.
For 10 weeks (we started on January 30th), we report downtown each Monday at Microsoft for a
2-hour session. The girls are taught how to use programming software to create their application
and to work on their Business Plan. We continue supervising them at the Lycée during the week to
advance their work until each week’s next session.
We are on a very tight schedule.
Emilie Robert Wong, a Lycée 11th grader, has already participated in this program for
two consecutive years (individual enrollment) and she won last year. This year, thanks
to her, and as the program is now open to schools, the Lycée was allowed to participate.

Damien Comolli, alumnus student from the Lycée Français La Pérouse
has been Director of football at Liverpool FC since November 2010.
He visited the Lycée last fall, met with the students and agreed to be intervieved. Damien is married with two daughters, 11 and 8 years old.
In what grade did you start at the Lycée?
I entered Lycée in 1988 as an 11th grader and stayed only one year
before returning to Nice to play with AS Monaco. Afterwards, I simultaneously earned a Master’s degree in law and my trainer’s degree.
You have a younger brother, Loïc who attended the Lycée as well? Yes, he was in 7th grade and now lives in the Bay Area.
When did you discover your passion for soccer? As young as I can remember, I’ve always been playing on a soccer team.
In the 1989 yearbook, (when you were in the 11th grade) your name was
mentioned regarding a soccer game between students, teachers and parents
named, “Battle of Fleurus”. I quote “Damien Comolli-Augier, certainly one
of the best players, dribbling with Danielle Amet”. Any comments?
I do remember this game. The level of aggressiveness rose as happens in
all soccer games between students, teachers and parents.
Before getting to your career, could you tell if and how the Lycée contributed
to your success? The Lycée helped me a lot because it allowed me to learn English.
When I first came here, I didn’t know a word and fortunately my
friends spoke to me in English. It is thanks to the Lycée and my friends
that later, I was able to work in Japan coaching players and then for
Premier League Clubs in England. I also went to Lycée Français
in Mexico. Attending Lycées abroad opens the mind and eases
adaption to different cultures. I know it’s the same for my brother.
What is your best memory from the Lycée?
I have only good memories. It was an extraordinary year. I kept
friends for life, I fell in love with the city, I became a fan of the
Giants and 49ers. My stay here left me a lifetime of memories.
Your worst memory?
When my mother announced we had to leave. It was such heartbreak for my brother and me.
Can you tell us about your professional career? Where did you first
start?
When I moved to Nice, I joined an under 18 team in Monaco
and played for 3 years. Then I started coaching an under 16 team.
At the time, I was lucky enough to be around players such as Lilian Thuram, Emmanuel Petit and Thierry Henri. My next destination was Nagasaki, Japan to train an under 18 team, and off
again to the UK as a European scout for Arsenal. I traveled all
over the world for seven years. In 2004, I became the Sports Director of the St. Etienne Club and in 2005, moved to Tottenham
(Arsenal’s worst enemy). In 2009 I went back to St. Etienne and
finally arrived in Liverpool in 2010.

DAMIEN COMOLLI GRAD. ‘90
INTERVIEW
How did the transition happen between player, coach, scout and director of football?
I loved soccer! As a teenager, I dreamt of becoming a coach, maybe because I was realistic and knew I couldn’t make it as a professional soccer player. Becoming a scout was a promotion indeed,
the passion and luck helped but I had to work long hours and
spend a lot of time away from my family. It’s not because it’s
sports that it’s easy. I left Arsenal because I wanted to move up
in my career. As Director of Football, I manage the sports area
of the club : contracts, recruiting, medical issues and the training center.
Can you explain the steps of recruiting a player?
There are two types of scouts: The ones dedicated to finding
young players between 8 and 16 (50 scouts in the UK have the
job of watching games to identify young talent) . Then you have
the scouts looking for professional players (10 in the world)
such as a goal keeper for example. I meet with the scouts on a
monthly basis. We start with a list of 10 players for one position,
then 5 and narrow it down to finally select one. We work on the
contract, the financial side and/or the exchange with another
club. We can for example evaluate a player worth $15 million.
There are negotiations, the other club may require $20 million
but if we have a set limit of $16 million, we don’t go over it.
There are also negotiations with the player himself. I have been
truly shocked by clubs who pay salaries over their generating
revenue budgets.
Can you give us an idea of budget?
The budget for Liverpool is $410 million, same as the Boston
Red Socks (4th largest budget in the Premier League), for Paris
St-Germain $220M and for Bacelona $800M. The Liverpool
Club owners are American and belong to the same group as the
Boston Red Socks.
What type of relationship do you have with the players ?
It’s not easy to establish relationships. One must keep a professional distance and not have personal friendships as it is important to maintain harmony between the players and try to
anticipate problems. It is the same issue with the head coach and
owner; Everyone must be happy. To make a comparison; in an
engine, all pistons must work well together.
What are the favorite aspects of your job?
When we find an unknown player who becomes a star; when
there is a game on Saturday at 3pm and at 4:45pm our team
has won, it’s quite rewarding. It is also very interesting to meet
others with the same position as me in baseball or American
football.
Before saying good bye, would you like to give an advice to Lycée
Français La Pérouse students ? They are incredibly lucky to be here and they should enjoy it.
Finally, how do you see yourself in 10 years ?
At the end of high school, I would have said I will work in the
world of soccer ; in 10 years, I will still be working in that field
but in 30 years, I will probably retire in San Francisco.

From the fruits of labor and talents of the Lycée students, L'Écho
PÉrousien is the Lycée’s new monthly newspaper. Published online, it is written and produced by student members of the Lycée’s
journalism club at Ortega. Our young reporters cover all school
events as well as news and local issues.
The Journalism Club managed by Ingrid Hazard and Anton
Ritzu have been meeting every Wednesday from 3:00 to 5:00pm
since September. It is open to all students who are interested in
news and world affairs, or simply to those who want to develop
their creativity.
The purpose of this newspaper is to reinforce our connection to the Lycée community and of course, keeping
everybody informed about school life !
As Marc Rossano notes in his interview with Léah Lorget, "L'Écho
PÉrousien will be an interesting way to address and share new
ideas."
This is only the beginning of the story and we rely on your
diligence and comments to make our newspaper alive.
The entire staff hopes that you will have as much pleasure
reading L'Écho PÉrousien as we have writing it.

A VISIT BY REDWOOD HIGH SCHOOL

As a yearly tradition, Redwood High School French students and
their teacher Bernadette Rattet, came to read us books they had
written and illustrated.
On Tuesday, November 29, both the kindergarten classes and two
of the 1st grade classes hosted small groups of students in their classrooms.
In the full-time pre-K3 class, we welcomed three high school students (who were a little nervous at the idea of reading in front of a
French audience).
Will read: "Kelly and her shoes", the story of a kangaroo on a journey to find her lost shoes. (They ended up being in her pocket!)
Grace read: "Sebastien, the shark." In this story, the shark feels sad
because his tail is too long. But in the end he is able to protect the
other animals and becomes a hero. Cristina read: "The little girl
looking for her hat," a story where all the animals get together to
help her find her hat.
for our students. All the children got into the search for the hat
and the shoes and felt sorry for the poor shark! The authors explained to us that they had been inspired by animal books they
liked as children. Grace told us about her passion for sharks.
To close the reading, all of the high school students were invited
to the class to listen to a story: one of a cyber donkey who discovers books. We highly recommend the reading of this very
funny book titled "It’s a book" by Lane Smith. It is very easy
to find since its first edition is American! (“It's a book” Lane
Smith, Roaring Brook Press)
Jean-Pierre Jantet would like to thank all the students and their
teachers for this great exchange which benefits both our school
and the community. He was particularly impressed by the writing and the illustrations of the students.
Grace, Cristina and Will graciously left their books with us so
that we can go back to read them again!

OPERA

Describing her part as one of the monks who slowly travel across the stage
in Act 1 of Turandot, Lucie observed, “our voices seemed so much stronger
onstage in front of that giant audience.” For Livia, the thrill of being in
Carmen was “hearing the music fill up the house, followed by clapping
filling up the house.” Juliette added, “It’s funny when something doesn’t go
as planned,” and described how one of the soldiers in Carmen improvised
when a boy accidentally dropped his shoe upon exiting the stage in Act 1:
he picked up the shoe and playfully threw it at the boy, in keeping with the
comic mood of the scene.

Lycee middle school students Lucie Bhisitkul, Livia Camperi and Juliette
Saux reveled in the limelight this fall as some of the youngest cast members
of the San Francisco Opera. The girls were among about thirty Level 4
singers from the San Francisco Girls Chorus school who, along with members of the boys chorus including Lycee 9th grader Isaac Ren, were chosen
to fill the roles of the serene Persian monks in Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot
and the boisterous Spanish street children in Georges Bizet’s Carmen.
Behind the scenes, a specialized staff of wranglers, teachers and dressers supervised every off-stage movement of the forty children
involved in each opera, guiding the young singers through the maze of hallways, overseeing homework, and making sure all were in
costume and makeup in time for their cues. The waiting was the hardest part, but according to Juliette and Livia, getting to meet the
star performers in Carmen was worth it.
All were impressed by the professional atmosphere and hard work involved in mounting productions of this caliber and learned quickly
how to prioritize school and homework, as well as their other chorus commitments, to meet the demands and expectations of this
world-class organization.
FOCUS
THREE DISTINGUISHED STUDENTS
BY ISABELLA TUMANENG, 11TH (S) GRADE STUDENT
It’s that time of year again.
School is back in session, and the talented students of
La Pérouse have themselves once again settled into their
weekly routines on the Ortega campus. Classes and
homework fill everyone’s time – but what are these students doing on the side? What are they doing when not
jotting down notes and studying for the fast-approaching
Baccalauréat?
The answer is thriving.
In the past year, one senior and three juniors earned two
science and mathematic and two literary awards.
The first was Emilie Robert Wong of this year’s junior
class. She and three other girls entered and won the
Technovation Challenge of 2010, a contest that involves
designing and creating an application for an Android
phone. The Technovation Challenge was created for girls
across the country to develop engineering amongst young
women interested in entrepreneurship as well as math
and science. This year, she is starting a team at the Lycée,
ready to compete in the Spring 2012 Challenge.
Also within the sciences is a nomination for the Nobel Laureate
event from the COSMOS at UC Davis, a summer enrichment
program that focuses on math, science, and speaking. Congratulations to Guillaume Prévot, another one of our juniors this year,
for being one of four COSMOS 2011 participants to have been
invited to present his project at the California Nobel Laureate
dinner, a black-tie event that takes place in Los Angeles every
November.
However, there are not only young scientists amongst us – there
are blossoming writers as well! The Asian Pacific Fund holds an
essay contest for around 1,400 Asian American students throughout the Bay Area every, including Isabella Tumaneng, grade 11,
2011’s first place winner in the grades 9-12 category. Her essay is
now published online on the Asian Pacific Fund website.
And the seniors deserve congratulating as well! Every year, only
520 high school juniors win the NCTE (National Counsel of
Teachers in English) Achievement Awards in Writing. They are
nominated students who must submit a previously-written essay and then must write a second one on an unknown prompt.
The contest highlights some of the North America’s most talented young writers. Last year, 1,649 students sent in their work,
including our own Jane Balkoski, class of ’12, one of the 2011
winners!
And they’re not alone – many other talented students walk the
halls of all three campuses. Who knows who the next award-winner will be?
BY FRÉDÉRIC ROUSSEL, HISTORY GEOGRAPHY TEACHER
This year, Mr. Roussel added sessions on debating current issues to
his Political Science club. Led by Mr. Lombard, they offer a break
and an analysis of the major events that shape our world such as
the jasmine’s revolution, the rising price of oil, migrations’issues,
etc. They allow students to get good general knowledge, as well
as to learn how to process information, to replace them in an
historical context and to put things into prospective to better understand the complexity of situations.
The optional political science forum aims at being:
• A first approach to political science with the definition of major
theories
• A preparation to the IEP’s tests
• A small selection of various themes part of the political science
optional class of the ES 11th and 12th graders
• An opportunity for students to organize conferences and to develop projects
Set up: 1 hour 30 minutes per week on Mondays from 4pm to
5:30 p.m.
Location: in a classroom with the possibility of using the computer room and auditorium if needed
Facilitators: Mr. Roussel (Professor of History Geography)
Mr. Lombard (Professor of History Geography)
External speakers for specific topics
Targeted audience: students from 11th and 12th grades who are
committed to regular attendance
General program:
FORUM
POLITICAL SCIENCES
• To provide knowledge of basic concepts and theories in political
science
• To revisit the main program of Economics and Social Geography
and History (First and final year) with a political science orientation (part of the IEP exam)
• To learn about a few major themes of the political science option program in order to establish a general framework in Political
Science
• To address current news issues by re-using some of the concepts
learnt beforehand.
Activities: every other week, the forum will be either:
• A classroom intervention from a teacher or an outside speaker
• A debate between students using:
1. Intervention
2. Researches conducted by students between sessions (high use of
Internet will be required - searching sites information will be given
to students)
- the other meeting will be devoted to debating current news issues
Three conferences will be organized by the students on topics chosen by them.
PATCHWORK
ALUMNI REUNION

Every year, the Lycée organizes alumni reunions in San Francisco and Paris. It’s always a pleasure for them to gather or even
to meet as alumni from the 1st grad’year 1977 to the last were
present.
The next reunions will take place on Friday, May 18 in
San Francisco and Friday, June 29 in Paris.
VARSITY VOLLEY-BALL
BY WILLIAM STAINIER, 8TH GRADE STUDENT
For the second year in a row, the Varsity Volleyball team won the
Championship in November.
was able to turn around their disadvantage and win the Championship
15-11!
They had a great season suffering only one loss as they went into the
final match against their rival CAIS (Chinese American International
School). The first set started off close with the Lycée taking the lead to
win 25-17. For the second set, CAIS came back strong to win 25-24.
With one win each, the final and deciding set is played to 15 points.
Confident from their 2nd set win, CAIS came into the final set strong
and was leading with a 9-5 lead against the Lycée. Pauline rallied the
team and with tremendous serves, smashes and teamwork, the Lycée
It was a memorable effort by returning players: Roman Backs, Ines Gueneau, Marinca Néderovique, William Stainier and new players: Pascal
Hines, Mathieu, Baptiste Mero, Martin Kaff and Max.
The team extends a big thank you to their outstanding coaches, Frank
Wittke and Pauline Legendre and to the parents, students, Kay and Chantal for supporting them in the final game!
