Pour James Franco, filmer l’Histoire, c’est la réactualiser, la soumettre à une nouvelle
lecture. Guidé par des plumes qui ont su tisser du réel à partir de lignes de vie fictives, il
revisite le passé de son pays pour expliquer les doutes de son présent : il puise dans le
« Stream of Consciousness » de William Faulkner afin d’étudier notre rapport au deuil
dans Tandis que j’agonise, et la décadence sociale avec Le Bruit et la fureur. Il adapte
également En un combat douteux de John Steinbeck, qui traite de révoltes paysannes dans
les années 1930 en Californie, ou encore Un enfant de Dieu de Cormac McCarthy, qui suit
la descente aux enfers d’un esprit malade dans le Tennessee des années 1950. Il n’hésite
pas, toutefois, à s’affranchir de ces supports littéraires : dans Sal, il réécrit et retrace les
derniers jours du regretté Sal Mineo, un acteur américain ouvertement homosexuel qui fut
assassiné en 1976 ; avec Zeroville, il élargit l’angle pour dépeindre l’univers décadent
d’Hollywood à cette même époque.
S’il s’est révélé aux yeux du monde devant la caméra en incarnant Harry Osborn dans la
trilogie Spider-Man de Sam Raimi, il n’a eu de cesse d’explorer de nouveaux horizons. Plus
qu’un acteur ou qu’un réalisateur, James Franco est désormais un artiste accompli et
complet.
Le Festival du Cinéma Américain lui rendra hommage en sa présence. À cette occasion, le
Festival présentera en avant-première son nouveau film en tant que réalisateur, In
Dubious Battle.
For James Franco, filming History means updating it, reading it anew. Guided by authors who
have managed to weave reality out of fictional lifelines, he revisits his country’s past to
account for the doubts of its present: he draws on Faulkner’s « Stream of Consciousness » to
examine our attitude towards mourning in As I Lay Dying, or social decline in The Sound and
the Fury. He also adapted John Steinbeck’s In Dubious Battle, about the uprising of fruitpickers in California in the 1930s, or Cormac McCarthy’s Child of God, about a sick mind’s
descent into hell in Tennessee in the 1950s. Yet James Franco has no trouble freeing himself
from his literary mentors: in Sal, he rewrote and recounted the last days of late-lamented Sal
Mineo, an openly gay American actor who was murdered in 1976; in Zeroville, he widened
the angle to depict the decadent world of Hollywood at the same period.
Although James Franco achieved world fame as an actor by playing Harry Osborn in Sam
Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, he has never stopped exploring new horizons. More than an actor
or a director, James Franco is now an accomplished and a complete artist.
The Deauville American Film Festival pays tribute to him, in his presence. To mark the
occasion, the Festival will screen the premiere of his new film as a director, In Dubious Battle.

James Franco est acteur, réalisateur, scénariste, producteur, professeur et écrivain. Il débute
sa carrière de comédien dans la série télévisée Freaks and Geeks avant de recevoir un
Golden Globe pour son rôle dans le film Il était une fois James Dean consacré à la biographie
de James Dean. Il joue dans Le Monde fantastique d’Oz et Spring Breakers, il incarne Harry
Osborn dans la trilogie des Spider-Man, et son immense talent est particulièrement
remarqué dans Harvey Milk, C’est la fin, Délire Express – pour lequel il est nommé au Golden
Globe du Meilleur Acteur – et 127 Heures – pour lequel il est nommé en tant que Meilleur
Acteur aux Oscars, à la Screen Actors Guild et aux Golden Globes. Il est également le
réalisateur et le producteur de plusieurs films, dont Child of God, Tandis que j’agonise,
Zeroville, Saturday Night et In Dubious Battle. Il participe pour la télévision à 11.22.63 et au
très attendu The Deuce. Au théâtre, il recueille des critiques élogieuses pour ses débuts à

James Franco is an actor, director, screenwriter, producer, teacher and author. He began his
career on Freaks and Geeks and received a Golden Globe Award for his performance in the
biographical film James Dean. Notable film credits include Oz the Great and Powerful, Spring
Breakers, Harry Osborn in the Spider Man trilogy, Milk, This is the End, Pineapple Express for
which he received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor and 127 Hours for which he
received Academy Award, SAG and Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor. He has directed
and produced several features including Child of God, As I Lay Dying, Zeroville, Saturday
Night and In Dubious Battle. His small screen credits include 11.22.63 and the highly
anticipated upcoming show The Deuce. He made his Broadway debut in Of Mice and Men to
rave reviews and directed the off-Broadway play The Long Shrift. He has been published
several times in magazines and through his own books and teaches college courses at UCLA,
USC and CAL Arts, and acting classes at Studio 4.

En Californie, dans la vallée de Salinas plantée de vergers, neuf cents ouvriers migrants se
soulèvent « en un combat douteux » contre les propriétaires terriens. Tirant sa force de
chacun des individus qui le composent, le groupe a pour meneur un certain Jim Nolan dont
l’idéalisme tragique conduit les grévistes à avoir désormais le courage de « ne plus jamais se
soumettre, de ne plus jamais céder ».
Publié en 1936, En un combat douteux (In Dubious Battle) est considéré comme le premier
chef-d’œuvre du grand écrivain et futur lauréat du Prix Pulitzer John Steinbeck.
In the California apple country, nine hundred migratory workers rise up "in dubious battle"
against the landowners. The group takes on a life of its own—stronger than its individual
members and more frightening. Led by the doomed Jim Nolan, the strike is founded on his
tragic idealism—on the "courage never to submit or yield."
Published in 1936, In Dubious Battle is considered the first major work of Pulitzer Prizewinning author John Steinbeck.
