13. PRACTICAL INFORMATION
-
Climate
The climate is tropical. The rainy season is from April to June and then from October to November. The
hurricane season is from June to the end of November.
-
Local time
The local time in Haiti is UTC/GMT -4. Government and private-sector offices are generally open between
08:00 and 09:00 a.m. and close between 03:00 and 05:00 p.m. Shops are open from 09:00 a.m. to 04:00

The official currency of the Republic of Haiti is the Haitian gourde (HTG). Nevertheless, the United States
dollar is accepted in almost all shopping centres in the country at the day’s exchange rate. As of the date of
preparation of this note, one US dollar (USD 1) is equivalent to HTG 47.15.
-
Languages
The two official languages of Haiti are French and Haitian Creole. French is the main written and
administrative language. It is spoken by the majority of Haitians. It is the language of instruction in most
schools and is used in the business sector.
-
Safety and security
Recently created by the Haiti National Police (PNH) and the Ministry of Tourism, the Tourism Police
(POLITOUR) aims to ensure the safety and security of tourism activities in the country. POLITOUR officers
are deployed in airports and around hotels, restaurants, public places and beaches in order to render
assistance to operators, residents as well as tourists.
-
Banks
Banks are open Monday through Friday from 09:00 a.m. to 03:00 p.m., and on Saturdays from 09:00 a.m.

Restaurants
Like its music, the cuisine of Haiti is a fusion of the flavours of the peoples who have inhabited the country
and Caribbean dishes such as riz national (rice with beans) or banane pesée (fried green plantains).
Generally speaking, Haitian dishes are well-spiced and are accompanied by hot sauces. Being an island
nation, Haiti features a large variety of fish—cooked in sauce or grilled—lobster and shrimp. Haiti is a
perfect place to enjoy tropical fruits such as mango, pineapple, papaya, soursop, grenadine, peaches or
figue Ti Malice, the most delicious variety of banana.
