Transportation
Public transportation: public and private bus services.
Taxis– both certified taxis and private cars or hucksters offer their
services. Cars– Suriname has left-handed traffic. For foreigners an
international driver’s license is required. Car rental–is fairly priced.
You can also rent bicycles or mopeds.
Location
Suriname is located on the north coast of South – America at
2 - 6° NB, 54 - 58° WL
Surface
163,800 square kilometers.
Electricity
Generally 110 volt/ 60hertz. The larger hotels often provide
220 volt / 60 hertz.
Population
Approximately 493,000 inhabitants.
Etnic groups
27% East Indians, 18% Afro-Surinamese (Creoles), 15% Javanese,
15% Maroons, Amerindians, Chinese, Lebanese, Israelis, Europeans
and others 25%.
Time zone
The time in Suriname is 2 hours later than the Eastern Standard
Time (EST) in the USA and 3 hours behind of Greenwich Mean Time
(GMT) in Europe.
Religion
27% Hindu, 25% Protestant, 23% Roman Catholic, 20% Muslim, 5%
other.
Traveling to Suriname
Air transportation– Via the Netherlands (Amsterdam), United States
of America (Miami), Brazil (Belem do Para), Aruba, La Guyane
Française (Cayenne), Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago (Port of Spain),
and Curaçao.
Road transportation– Via Guyana (you will enter Suriname at South
Drain, Nickerie). Via French Guyana (via St. George and Cayenne,
you will enter Suriname at Albina, Marowijne).
Boat transportation – Small sailing boats can harbor at individual
ports (with permission). Large (cruise) ships harbor at the Nieuwe
Haven.
Capital
Paramaribo (approximately 250,000 inhabitants).
Form of government
Democratic Republic headed by the President,
Mr. Ronald R. Venetiaan; Suriname became
independent in 1975 on the 25th of November.
Languages
Dutch is the official language. English is widely spoken. The common
language is Sranan Tongo.
Climate
Tropical with a high humidity. The temperature is on average 28°C.
Seasons: short dry season– from February through April; long rainy
season– from May to Mid August; long dry season – from Mid August
through November; short rainy season– from December through
January.
Currency
Surinamese dollar (SRD). In general, credit cards are still not widely
accepted in Suriname. Some hotels and travel agencies are happy
to accept American Express, Visa and Master Card. Commonly
accepted currencies such as US Dollars, Euros as well as traveler’s
checks, can be safely exchanged at any bank or money exchange
office. The RBTT bank accepts some Dutch bank cards.

wijze te exploiteren. Hierop houden de overheid en milieuorganisaties een wakend oog. Een tendens in de goede
richting is de groeiende interesse onder de particulieren
voor de certificering van hun bedrijf.
Niet alleen bij de multinationals maar ook bij de grote
agro-ondernemingen kent men een educatieve afdeling,
die bezoekers informeert. Tenslotte wil een toerist niet
alleen met een heerlijk gevoel maar ook met een leerrijke
ervaring naar huis.
Steden met beroemde gebouwen zijn aantrekkelijk, maar laten we eerlijk zijn:
een land met heel veel flora en fauna, zuivere lucht en gastvrije mensen, spreekt een
bewuste toerist toch meer aan. Zo’n land is Suriname dat nog ‘ontdekt’ moet worden.
In deze gids nemen wij u mee naar het ‘onbekende’ land van Anthony Nesty,
Olympisch zwemkampioen in 1988.
Suriname is, voor wat cultuur en bevolking betreft, uniek in
vergelijking met de Caraïbische regio en de Amerika’s. Dit uit
zich onder andere in de gastronomie die het Surinaams eten
tot een gevarieerde en smaakrijke beleving maakt. Alleen
hier komt de Javaanse cultuur voor en wonen inheemsen en
marrons - afstammelingen van weggelopen slaven - nog in
stamverband met elkaar in de natuur. Behalve een rijkdom
aan cultuur en historie heeft het land ook een fascinerende
natuur te bieden.
Toerisme in Suriname is vooral gericht op het ecotoerisme,
maar voor de andere vormen, zoals agro-, cruise- en sporttoerisme, bestaat ook een toenemende belangstelling. Zo
levert onze agrarische sector het bij toeristen zo geliefde
fruit en de groenten, komen jaarlijks meer cruiseschepen
en conferencemogelijkheden, zowel in de stad als in het binnenland en jaarlijks vinden er verschillende internationale

a country with a diversity of flora and fauna, clean air and hospitable people
does appeal more to the average aware tourist. All of this is Suriname, a
country still to be ‘discovered’. In this destination guide we take you on a
trip through the ‘unknown’ country of Anthony Nesty, Olympic swimming
champion in 1988.
With regards to its culture and population,
Suriname is unique compared to other
countries in the Caribbean and the
Americas. This is expressed, among others,
in the exquisite Surinamese cuisine which
makes the enjoyment of a meal a varied and
tantalizing experience. The Javanese culture
can only be found here and Amerindians and
Maroons – descendents of runaway slaves –
still live in tribal communities in the interior.
Apart from the riches in culture and history,
the country also offers a fascinating nature.
Tourism in Suriname is particularly aimed at
eco-tourism but especially for other forms of
tourism such as agro, cruise, and sport
tourism there is an increasing interest
among visitors. As such, our agricultural
tourism producing fruit and vegetables,
popular among tourists, cruise ships
entering our port annually, increasing
conference facilities, both in the city and in
the interior, as well as various international
sport events and festivals held each year,
are all famous among people traveling to
Suriname. For shopping and sightseeing
there are more than enough possibilities
and locations to choose from while two sites,
the Central Suriname Nature Reserve and
Historic Paramaribo are placed on the
UNESCO World Heritage List. All these
attractions will further enhance your interest
to choose this intriguing country as your
holiday destination. Next to the mining, oil,
fishery and lumber sector, sustainable
tourism also contributes largely to the
national economy of our country. It is
important for a country that its natural
resources and biodiversity are exploited in
a sustainable manner. The government and
environmental organizations keep a
watchful eye on this. A tendency in the right
direction is the growing interest among
private companies for certification.
Not only multinationals but also large agro
businesses have an educational department
providing information to visitors. After all,
next to an unforgettable experience every
tourist also wishes to return home with
interesting information about their
destination.

le pays inconnu de Anthony Nesty, le champion olympique de natation en 1988.
Le Suriname est, en ce qui concerne la
culture et la population, unique en sont
genre comparé aux pays de la région des
caraïbes et des Amériques. Cela se fait
sentir entre autre dans la gastronomie
qui a fait de la nourriture Surinamaise un
évènement gustatif varié. Ce n’est qu’ici que

Le tourisme au Suriname est tout d’abord
focalisé sur l’écotourisme, mais il y a
également une croissance en intérêt pour le
tourisme agricole, de croisière et de sport.
C’est ainsi que le secteur agricole offre les
fruits tant prisés aux touristes, que chaque
année les possibilités pour les croisières
et les conférences augmentent si bien en
ville qu’à l’intérieur du pays, et que chaque
année différents évènements sportifs et
festivals ont lieux.

Alors que vous aurez nombre de lieux pour
faire du shopping et des balades, les deux
sites du patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco, la
réserve naturelle du centre du Suriname et
la partie historique de Paramaribo, saura
exciter le fait que vous ayez choisit ce pays
en tant que destination touristique.
A coté du secteur minier, pétrolier, agricole,
de pêche et de bois, le secteur touristique
livre une part non négligeable à l’économie
nationale. Pour notre pays il est de grand
intérêt d’exploiter nos réserves naturelles et
notre biodiversité de façon durable. Le gouvernement et les organisations écologiques
y gardent un bien coup d’œil. Une tendance dans la bonne direction est l’intérêt
croissant des particuliers à certifier leur
entreprise. L’on voit, non seulement chez
les multinationaux mais également chez les
grands entrepreneurs agricoles, une section
éducative qui informe les visiteurs. Pour finir,
le touriste ne veut non seulement retourner
avec un bon sentiment mais également une
riche expérience.

voor Nederlanders het feit dat men hier gewoon ‘Hollands’
praat en de vakantie kan niet meer stuk.
Welkom in toeristisch Suriname!
Suriname is een prachtig toeristisch land dat met de opname van twee van haar uitzonderlijk mooie gebieden op de wereldkaart is geplaatst. De moderne toerist die iets
anders wil dan languit op het strand liggen en naar de blauwe zee kijken, komt in ons land
ruimschoots aan zijn trekken. Hij kan er kennismaken met nieuwe culturen, historische
bezienswaardigheden bekijken en vooral onze ongerepte natuur bezoeken.
Bij een reis naar ons binnenland kan de bezoeker vertoeven in het Centraal Suriname Natuurreservaat, dat op
de Werelderfgoedlijst van de Unesco staat. Dit natuurreservaat, groot 1,6 miljoen hectare, waar tot nu toe
ongekende planten en dieren, acht apensoorten en meer
dan 700 verschillende vogels leven, is een waar paradijs
voor wie op zoek is naar puur natuur, omdat er werkelijk
geen mens woont. De Surinaamse bevolking van nog geen

Natural and Cultural Heritage
Suriname is a beautiful tourist destination placed on the world map with
two of its unique sites. The modern tourist craving for a different experience
than lying stretched out on a beach watching the blue sea will have plentiful
to choose from in our country. He will have the opportunity to meet new
cultures, visit historic sites and in particular, enjoy our untouched nature.
During a trip into the interior, you
can visit the Central Suriname Nature
Reserve, placed on the World Heritage List
of the Unesco. This nature reserve with a
land surface of 1.6 hectares, in which still
unprecedented plants and animals live as
well as eight types of monkeys and over 700
different types of birds, is a true paradise
for lovers of unspoiled nature because this
part of the world is still inhabited by men.
The Surinamese population of less then half
a million souls is characterized by a great
diversity and tourists can enjoy a sightseeing walk through Paramaribo passing by a
mosque and synagogue, right next to each
other, a mandir and the cathedral, not to
mention the historic colonial buildings in
the old part of the inner city, also placed on
the Unesco World Heritage List. Suriname
therefore has enough of everything to be a
true attraction for the present-day tourist.
Add to this the friendly people, well-known
for their hospitality, and for Dutch people
the fact that Dutch is the spoken language
of almost everyone, and you have all the
ingredients for a prefect holiday. Welcome in

maisons coloniales dans la vieille centre-ville

mondial de l’UNESCO.
Le Suriname possède donc tout pour être
attirant pour le touriste d’aujourd’hui.

parle le Néerlandais comme aux Pays-Bas, et

Kunst in Suriname
In de tweede helft van de 19e eeuw kwam de ontwikkeling van kunstvormen in Suriname
op gang. Na de afschaffing van de slavernij zorgden de nieuwe immigranten er mede voor
dat ons land cultureel heel divers werd. Deze verrijking is in de Surinaamse samenleving
van vandaag goed te merken. Niet alleen in de uitgebreide Surinaamse keuken, de religies,
de traditionele kledij en de verscheidenheid aan gesproken talen, maar ook in de kunstuitingen, zang en dans, de toneeluitvoeringen en vooral ook in de beeldende kunsten.
De schilderkunst in ons land kent veel elementen van deze
etnische diversiteit. Ook in de beeldhouwkunst, de keramiek
en de batikkunst is deze verscheidenheid duidelijk zichtbaar. De kunstuitingen in de 19e eeuw hadden nog een
sterk Europees karakter en in de 20e begonnen kunstenaars zich te richten op de samenleving zelf en de actualiteit
daarin, zoals in de dichtkunst en in de beeldende kunsten.
Vanaf de Tweede Wereldoorlog kwam het Surinaamse element in de techniek, in de kleur en de materialen steeds
nadrukkelijker naar voren.

In het laatste kwart van de vorige eeuw is
een keur van schilders en beeldhouwers
in Suriname opgeleid, die als inspirerende
voorbeeldfiguren Wim Bos Verschuur en
Nola Hatterman had. Opleidingsinitiatieven
zijn na de onafhankelijkheid genomen en
het Nola Hatterman Instituut, begonnen
in de jaren tachtig van de vorige eeuw in
Paramaribo, neemt in de opleiding van jonge
beeldende kunstenaars in Suriname nog
steeds een zeer prominente plaats in.
Anno 2007 zijn onze kunstenaars zowel lokaal als internationaal actief. Toeristen kunnen de verschillende kunstvormen bewonderen in de vele galeries en tijdens de exposities
die gedurende het gehele jaar worden georganiseerd, met
als hoogtepunt de Nationale Kunstbeurs in november.
Gaandeweg hebben de beeldende kunsten zich ontwikkeld
tot een sector die niet meer weg te denken is en die ook in
de Surinaamse economie een steeds belangrijkere plaats
inneemt.
Art in Suriname
The development of art forms in Suriname got into its stride in the first half
of the 19th century. After the abolishment of slavery, the new immigrants
contributed to the remarkable cultural diversity of the country. This enrichment is still very much visible in the Surinamese community today. Not only
in the wide variety of Surinamese cuisine, various religions, traditional costumes and many different languages but also in expressions of art, singing
and dancing, theatrical performances and especially expressive arts.
The art of painting in our country
knows many elements of this ethnic
diversity. This diversity is also clearly
visible in sculpting, ceramics and
batik art. The artistic expressions
in the 19th century still manifested
a strong European character and in
the 20th century artists began to
focus on the community itself and
the actuality therein such as was
expressed in poetry and expressive
arts. As of the Second World War, the
Surinamese element in technique,
color and materials increasingly took
the upper hand.
Training initiatives were taken after
Suriname’s independence and
the Nola Hatterman Institute,
established in the eighties of the
past century in Paramaribo, still
plays a predominant role in the
training of young expressive artists.
In the last quarter of the past century, many painters and sculptors
were trained in Suriname and they
all had as their role models Wim
Bos Verschuur and Nola Hatterman.
Gradually, the expressive arts
developed into a sector which is now
indispensable and which holds an
increasingly important position even
in the Surinamese economy.
Now in 2007, our artists are active
both nationally and internationally.
Tourists can admire the various
art forms in the many galleries and
during expositions held the whole
year through with as highlight the
National Art Fair in November.

siècle, les formes artistiques se sont vues
développer au Suriname. Après l’abolition
de l’esclavage les nouveaux immigrant ont
participé à la diversité culturelle du pays.
Cette richesse est à présent très visible
dans la communauté Surinamaise. Non
seulement dans la cuisine, la religion, les
costumes traditionnels et les nombreuses
langues qui y sont parlées mais également
dans l’expression artistique, le chant et la
danse, les pièces de théâtres et surtout
dans l’art plastique.
L’art de peinture dans notre pays connaît

la seconde guerre mondiale l’élément
Surinamais c’est profilé par la technique, la
couleur et les matériaux.
Dans le dernier quart du siècle dernier une
poigné de peintres et de sculpteurs ont été
formé ayant comme personne de figure

Wim Bos Verschuur et Nola Hatterman. Des
initiatives de formation ont été prise après
l’indépendance et l’institut Nola Hatterman,
ayant commencé à Paramaribo dans les
années 80 du siècle dernier, occupe
toujours une place très proéminente dans
l’éducation de jeunes artistes au Suriname.
Année 2007, nos artistes sont actifs au
niveau locale et international.
Les touristes peuvent admirer les différentes
formes artistiques dans les nombreuses
galeries et durant des expositions qui sont
organisé l’année durant avec comme point
culminant le salon d’art national en novembre.
Tout au long l’art plastique c’est développé
vers un secteur qui n’est plus à écarter de la
pensé et qui prend également un rôle significatif dans l’économie du Suriname.

Sranan nyang ... a culinary trip in cultures
Van al het eten, krijg je trek, maar dat is
geen probleem, want overal kan je eten
kopen. Het is mogelijk om de klok rond te
eten aan de Waterkant. Snacks, koekjes,
voedzame gerechten en lokale drankjes zijn
verkrijgbaar. Je kunt in Suriname eenvoudig
eten maar ook exclusief dineren: van de
warungs op Blauwgrond tot de prestigieuze hotels in het
uitgaansgebied.
De bartenders shaken overheerlijke drankjes en bijzondere
cocktails. Er komen steeds meer vakbekwame koks, die
durven te experimenteren met wat het land biedt.
Tongstrelende en trendy gerechten, zoals garnalen in
geraspte kokos met een mango-peperchutney, saotosoep
van gerookte kip, sinaasappel roti met eend en een luchtig
dessert van pomtayer.
Het Suriname Culinary Team heeft tweemaal brons gehaald
op Caraïbische wedstrijden en kwam dit jaar met een bijzondere prijs thuis, de ‘Spirit of the Caribbean’, omdat de chefs
en bartender een nieuwe inspiratie hebben gegeven aan de
Caribbean: bijzondere inheemse kruiden en specerijen en
toepassingen op een verfrissende manier.
Een prijs om trots op te zijn!
Suriname heeft door de samenstelling van zijn bevolking een rijke eetcultuur. Voor de
inheemsen is wild vlees met cassave de dagelijkse maaltijd. Creolen houden van
moks’alesi en pom. Javanen hebben hun kruidige keuken, Hindostanen stoven hun
gerechten in allerlei soorten massala en eten daarbij roti of rijst, Chinezen houden van
verse producten en korte bereidingstechnieken en iedereen eet van elkaar.
Groente en fruit worden op kleine kostgrondjes met zorg
gekweekt. Vele families voorzien in hun eigen behoefte en
verkopen wat over is in stalletjes langs de weg en op de
verschillende markten. Kippen scharrelen over het erf en dat
levert de typische Sranan fowru op. Het varkensvlees is van
uitstekende kwaliteit en misschien wel het lekkerste van de
wereld. Een mooie trip is een bezoek aan de Centrale Markt
’s morgens vroeg. Hier kun je echt alles kopen. De aanvoer
van verse vis en levende krab gaat de hele dag door; garnalen in alle maten, gepeld of ongepeld. Een kip wordt op je
aanwijzing geslacht. Iets verder liggen verse bladgroenten en
fruit. In het overdekte gedeelte zijn marinades, sambals,
kruiden en specerijen. Wil je nog dieper in de eetcultuur
duiken, bezoek dan op zondag de Javaanse markt in Noord
en de Chinese aan de Keizerstraat: een grote ontdekking.

Suriname has a rich culinary culture due to its divers ethnic population.
Game eaten with cassava is the daily meal of the people in the interior.
Popular among Creoles is moks’alesi (cook up rice) and pom (oven dish
made from root vegetable). The Javanese have their spicy kitchen and the
Hindustani prepare their dishes with all kinds of massala (Hindu yellow
herbal powder) which they eat with rice or roti (flour pancake). The Chinese
use fresh products and vegetables with a short preparation method after
which everyone joins in eating.
Vegetables and fruit are meticulously
cultivated on small agricultural plots. Many
families provide in their own living in this
way and sell the excessive crop in stalls
along the road or on the various markets.
Chickens scrape around in the yards and
this produces the typical ‘Sranan fowru’
(Surinamese fowl). Pork meat in Suriname
is of an excellent quality and probably the
most delicious the world over. A beautiful trip
is a visit to the Central Market in the early
morning hours. Here you can buy almost
anything. Fresh fish and live crabs supplied
the whole day through; shrimps in all sizes,
shelled or unshelled. A chicken is killed for
use in food upon the buyer’s request. A little
further you find fresh green vegetables and
fruit. In the market hall the tantalizing smell
of marinades, sambal, herbs and spices fills
the air. For those who wish to experience a
more profound culinary adventure a visit to
the Javanese market on Sundays in North
Paramaribo or the Chinese market at
Keizerstraat is a true revelation.
All different types of food Suriname has to
offer will surely make you feel hungry. Well,
that’s no problem. You can buy food almost
everywhere. At Waterkant along the river,
you can choose to your heart’s content
from a wide variety of snacks, cakes,
nourishing dishes and local drinks. In
Suriname you can enjoy a simple meal in
the warungs (Javanese eateries) at Blauwgrond or or dine exclusively in the prestigious
hotels in the entertainment city centre. The
bartenders shake absolutely delicious drinks
and special cocktails. An increasing number
of very skilled chefs dare to experiment with
all food products Suriname has to offer.
Savory and trendy dishes such as shrimps
prepared in grated coconut with a mangopepper chutney, saoto soep with smoked
chicken, a roti prepared with oranges
and duck and a light dessert made from
pomtayer (root vegetable).
The Suriname Culinary Team won a bronze
medal twice at Caribbean culinary competitions and took home a special award this
year: the ‘Spirit of the Caribbean’ because
the chefs and bartenders brought a new
inspiration to the Caribbean: unique national
herbs and spices and refreshing preparation
methods. An award to be proud of!

Le Suriname connaît, grâce a la composition de sa population, une culture culinaire
très riche. Pour les indigènes le gibier et
la cassave sont un repas quotidien. Les
créoles aiment le moksi alesi avec du pom.
Les javanais ont leur cuisine épicée, les
hindoustanis mijotent leurs plats dans des
massalas différents et les mangent avec
du roti ou du riz, les chinois aiment les
produits frais et des techniques de préparations courtes et tout le monde mange de
l’un et de l’autre.
Les fruits et légumes sont cultivés avec
soins sur des petits terrains. Beaucoup de
familles sont autosuffisantes et vendent
leurs surplus au bord de la route ou sur les
différents marchés. Les poules se baladent
sur la route se qui produit le poulet typiquement Surinamais, le ‘sranan fowru’. La
viande de porc est de très bonne qualité voir
même peut être le meilleur au monde. Une
belle balade est une visite au marché central
tôt le matin. Ici vous pourrez vraiment tout
acheter. La livraison de poissons frais et de
crabes vivants est constante; des crevettes
de toutes tailles, peler ou pas. Un poulet est
abattu a votre demande. Un peu plus loin se
trouvent les légumes à feuilles et les fruits.
Dans la partie couverte sont les marinades,
les sambals, les épices et les herbes. Si vous
voulez vous approfondir dans la culture
culinaire, alors allez au marché javanais à
Noord et le marché chinois au Keizerstraat:
Une grande découverte.Tous cela vous
donne bien l’appétit, mais cela ne fait rien,
parce que vous pouvez vous acheter à
manger un peu partout. Il est possible de
manger à toute heure au Waterkant. Snacks,
biscuits, plat nourrissant et boissons locales
y sont disponible.
Au Suriname vous pouvez manger simple
mais également dîner de façon exclusif: des
warung de blauwgrond au prestigieux hôtels

vous secouent des boissons délicieuses et
de cocktails extraordinaires. De plus en
plus de cuisinier qualifié s’installent et
expérimentent avec les produits que notre

des compétition des caraïbes et est revenu

we zien de Marco Zero, het monument op
de evenaar die met drie dikke lijnen is aan
gegeven, en natuurlijk de immense
Amazonrivier.
De reis kan ook omgekeerd ondernomen worden: vanuit
Macapá door Frans Guyana naar Suriname. Een spectaculaire tocht, waarbij men kan genieten van andere bezienswaardigheden dan van de heenreis. Terwijl men ‘en route’
is naar de enige voormalige Nederlandse kolonie in ZuidAmerika, proeft men nog de sporen van het Franse erfgoed
bij onze oosterburen, waarna de reis zich vervolgt tot de
grenspost in Albina. En wat wij voor de bezoeker in petto hebben, is niet onbekend. Onze historische binnenstad, de oude
plantages, het Galibi Natuurreservaat, Bigi Pan, het Boven
Suriname riviergebied en de Raleighvallen, een greep uit de
vele attracties van ons land.
In een volgende fase zal de samenwerking op toerismegebied vanuit Suriname uitgebreid worden in westelijke
rich-ting naar Guyana, en eventueel andere omliggende
landen. Hierdoor zullen er nog meer reismogelijkheden
ontstaan voor de toeristen die ons land aandoen.
Het idee leeft onder menig avonturier: eens over de weg dwars door Frans Guyana naar onze
zuiderbuur Brazilië. en het kan. wat van de reiziger gevraagd wordt, is veel geduld, want de
trip duurt twee volle dagen maar uw belevingswereld wordt aanzienlijk verrijkt.
’s Ochtends vertrekt men uit Paramaribo met als eerste
bestemming Albina voor de oversteek naar Frans-Guyana
per korjaal of met de veerboot. De bezienswaardigheden op
deze route zijn niet alleen de lanceerbasis en de Duivelseilanden in Kourou, maar ook de natuurreservaten onderweg. Na Cayenne verandert het landschap aanmerkelijk.
De bomen lijken hoger en het uitzicht wordt gekenmerkt
door boslandschap en heuvelland. De aankomst in
St. George aan de rand van de rivier die Frans Guyana van
Brazilië scheidt, betekent dat er negen uren reistijd op zit.
Men kan doorreizen na de oversteek of genieten van een
welver-diende rust in het Braziliaanse grensstadje Oiapoc.
De volgende dag begint het laatste traject naar de stad
Macapá met de auto of de bus; een trip van tien lange
uren, maar eenmaal in Macapá, worden de vermoeienissen
rijkelijk beloond. Een ware ecostad ontrolt zich voor de ogen;

The idea is shared by many adventurers: to travel by road straight through
French Guiana to our southern neighboring country, Brazil. And this is very
much possible. The only thing asked from the traveler is a lot of patience
because the trip takes two full days but the experience is truly unique.
You depart, early in the morning, from
Paramaribo to your first destination Albina
where you will cross over the river to French
Guiana by dug-out canoe or ferry boat. The
interesting sites along the route include the
launch site and Devils Islands in Kourou,
as well as the nature reserves on the way.
Passed Cayenne, the landscape changes
remarkably. The trees seem higher and the
view is characterized by woodlands and hills.
After your arrival in St. George, along the
river separating French Guiana from Brazil,
you will have a traveling time of nine hours
behind you. From there you have the opportunity to continue the trip, after crossing
the river, or enjoy a well-deserved rest in the
small Brazilian border town Oiapoc.
The following day, the last part of the route
onto the city Macapá begins by car or by bus;
a trip of ten long hours but once you arrive in
Macapá, all endurance will be well rewarded.
A true eco-city unfurls before your eyes; you
will see the Marco Zero, the monument on
the equator, indicated by three wide lines,
and of course, the immense Amazon river.
The trip can also be made by reversed route:
from Macapá through French Guiana to
Suriname. A spectacular trip on which you
can enjoy different interesting sites compared to the outward journey. While being
‘en route’ to the only former Dutch colony
in South America, you will still be able to
picture the marks of the French heritage of
our eastern neighbors. The trip is afterwards
continued to the border crossing in Albina.
And what we have in store for visitors to
Suriname, is all too familiar. Our historic
inner city, old plantations, the Galibi Nature
Reserve, Bigi Pan, the Upper Suriname river
area and Raleigh Falls, are just a small pick
from the many beautiful attractions our
country has to offer. In a following phase,
the cooperation in the area of tourism from
Suriname will be further extended in western
direction to Guyana and possibly other
surrounding countries. This will create more
travel opportunities for tourists visiting
our country.

Le voyage ne vous emmènera non seulement au site de lancement et aux îles du
Salut a Kourou mais également aux réserves
naturelles sur le chemin.
Apres Cayenne le paysage change
considérablement. Les arbres semblent
plus grands et la vue est marquée par un
paysage forestier et vallonné. L’arrivé a Saint
George à la rivière qui sépare la Guyane du
Brésil signifie que vous venez de faire 9
heures de trajet. L’on peut continuer son
voyage vers l’autre rive ou profiter d’un
repos bien mérité dans le village frontalier
brésilien Oiapoc.
Le jour suivant commence le dernier trajet
vers la ville Macapá en voiture ou en bus,
un trajet de 10 longues heures mais une
fois à Macapá vos efforts seront richement
récompensés. Une vrai ville verte se dévoile
à vos yeux ; vous y verrais le macro zéro, le
monument sur l’équateur marqué par trois
grosses lignes, et bien sur l’immense rivière
amazone.

sites attractifs que sur le chemin d’aller.
Alors que vous en route vers la seule
ancienne colonie en Amérique du sud vous
goûterez encore les traces de l’héritage
Français chez nos voisins de l’Est, après
quoi le voyage continue vers le post
frontalier d’Albina. Et ce que nous avons a
offrir aux visiteurs n’ est pas inconnu. Notre
ville historique, les anciennes plantations,
la réserve naturelle de Galibi, Bigi Pan, la
région du Boven Suriname et les chutes
Raleigh, une fourchette des nombreuses
attractions ne notre pays.
Dans une prochaine phase la coopération
au niveau touristique serra agrandi en du
coté Ouest ver Guyana, et éventuellement
vers d’autres pays avoisinants.
Ainsi d’autres possibilités de voyages se
créeront pour les touristes qui s’arrêtent

Afro-Surinaamse muziek:
kaseko en kawina
Suriname kent veel muziekvormen die elk deel uit maken van de culturele beleving van de
verschillende bevolkingsgroepen. Deze zijn – behalve de inheemsen – uit alle windstreken
naar ons land gehaald als slaaf of contractkoelies; de overigen zijn hier min of meer
vrijwillig gekomen. Op de diverse culturele hoogtijdagen kan men regelmatig de verschillende muziekvormen beluisteren.
Kaseko is de verzamelnaam van muziekvormen uit de
Afro-Surinaamse cultuur die door dansorkesten op westerse
muziekinstrumenten worden gespeeld. Het repertoire bevat
traditionele volksliedjes, sacrale gezangen uit de winti en
ook wel Europese liedjes met een Afro-tintje. Dit laatste geldt
ook voor stichtelijke liederen die van wieg tot graf klinken. Bij
stichtelijke muziek heet de band een bazuinkoorgroep (een
kwartet van trombones of bazuinen uit de traditie van de
Evangelische Broedergemeente). Bazuinkoorgroepen spelen
groot bazuin (blazers met slagwerk) of klein bazuin (zonder
slagwerk).
Bij de kaseko-band zijn de grote trom (skratyi) en de
kleine trom (snare drum) belangrijk, omdat ze samen een
opzwepend ritme produceren.
Vroeger sprak men van ‘bigi-poku’ en ‘open-gooien’. Het
woord kaseko is afkomstig van de Franse deportés, die naar

De oorspronkelijke kaseko-ensembles uit
de Franse koloniën lijken op onze kawinaensembles.
Kawina is zeer waarschijnlijk ontstaan in
de 19e eeuw op de (creoolse) plantages
aan de Commewijnerivier. Andere bronnen stellen dat deze
muziekvorm onder de balata-bleeders en gouddelvers na de
emancipatie ontstond. Zij was in de periode 1900-1940, erg
populair. De zang werd oorsprokelijk begeleid op een kleine
trom, reson (kwatro) en de kawina-sekseki (een bus gevuld
met zaden).
De kawina heeft zich waarschijnlijk onder invloed van de
Barbadiaanse muzikanten - die ook op de goudvelden werkten – getransformeerd tot het huidig ensemble met de volgende bezetting: twee dubbelvellige trommen (koti- en hari
dron); kwakwabangi; tum of timbal (conga); kawina-sekseki
(twee metalen schudbussen); reson (kwatro) en of banjo.
In de jaren tachtig heeft er een synthese plaatsgevonden
met het kaseko ensemble, kaskawi genoemd, en onder
andere hierdoor is Naks Kaseko-Loko erg populair geworden.
Zeer bekend is het nummer Faluma in de uitvoering van de
Barbadiaanse formatie Square One.

Suriname knows many different types of music which all form part of
the cultural expression of the various ethnic population groups. with the
exception of the indigenous people these ethnic groups were brought to our
country from all corners of the world as slaves or indentured laborers; the
other population groups came here more or less voluntarily. Their different
types of music can be enjoyed during the various cultural festive days.
Kaseko is the collective name for music
types from the Afro-Surinamese culture
played by music bands on western
instruments. The repertoire includes
traditional folk music, sacral songs from the
winti (dance ritual to honor or consult spirits)
as well as European songs with an Afrotouch. The last is also true for devotional
music played from the cradle to the grave.
The bands playing these hymns are called
trumpet or trombone choir groups (a quartet
of trombones or trumpets from the tradition
of the Evangelistic Brethren Community).
These choir groups play big trumpet (wind
instruments with percussion) or small
trumpet (without percussion).
In the kaseko band, the big drum (skratyi)
and the small drum (stringed drum) are the
main instruments because when played
together they produce a stirring up rhythm.
This type of music was formerly called ‘bigipoku’ (major music) and ‘fling open’. The
term ‘kaseko’ stems from the French
deportees who exiled to Suriname. Some
were musicians. Kasékò (French Creole:
‘casser le corps’) means ‘shaking the body
loose’ or ‘dancing’. The original kaseko
ensembles from the French colonies
resemble our kawina ensembles.
Kawina presumably developed in the 19th
century on the (Creole) plantations along
the Commewijne river. Other sources claim
that this type of music originated among the
balata bleeders and gold diggers after the
emancipation. It was a very popular musical
expression in the period 1900-1940. The
songs were originally conducted by a small
drum, a quattro and the kawina ‘sekseki’ (tin
filled with seeds).
The kawina probably transformed under
influence of the Barbadian musicians who
also worked in the gold fields, into the
current ensemble with the following
instruments: two double skinned drums

(koti- and hari dron); a kwakwabangi; a tum
or timbal (conga); a kawina sekseki (two
metal shaking tins); the reson (quattro) and
or a banjo. In the eighties, a synthesis took
place with the kaseko ensemble, called the
‘kaskawi’ and this, among others, led to the
popularity of the music group Naks Kaseko
Loko. A very popular song is Faluma,
performed by the Barbadian music
formation Square One.

Le Suriname connaît beaucoup de formes
de musique qui font tous part d’un vécu culturel des différentes populations ethniques.
Celles ci sont- mis appart les indigènes- emmené de tous les coins du monde tel les
esclaves ou coulis contractuel ; les autres
étant plus au moins venu de leur propre
grès. Lors des divers évènements culturels
vous aurez souvent la possibilité d’écouter
les différentes formes musicales.
Kaseko est une compilation de forme de
musique culturelle Afro-Surinamaise qui
pars des orchestres de dans est joué sur
des instruments occidentaux. Le répertoire
contient des chansons populaires traditionnelles, chants sacrés de wintis et même
des chansons européenne avec une touche
Afro. Ce dernier est également le cas pour
des chansons édifiantes qui résonnent de
berceaux à tombe. Lors de ces musiques
le groupe s’appelle un Bazuinkoor (un
quartet de trombones ou de trompettes de
la communauté de confrérie). Ces groupes
jouent la grande Trompe (instruments à vent
avec percussion) ou la petite trompe (sans
percussion).
Avec les groupes Kasekos, le grand tambour (skratyi) et le petit tambour (batterie)
sont très important parce qu’ensemble ils
produisent un rythme fouetté. Dans le passé
l’ont parlait de ‘bigi poku’ et ‘open-gooien’
(ouvrir). Le mot Kaseko est originaire des
déportés français, qui ont dévié vers le
Suriname. Certains d’entre eux étaient des
musiciens. Kaseko vient du français créole
signifiant casser le corps, ou bien bouger le
corps, danser. Les ensembles Kaseko authentiques des colonies françaises ressem-

ble à nos ensembles kawinas. Kawina a
très certainement débuté au 19ieme siècle

tussen Frans-Guyana in het oosten, Guyana in het westen, Brazilië in het

Doelgerichte promotionele activiteiten op internationale
fora zullen Suriname dan ook positioneren op relevante
markten, zoals in Nederland, Frans-Guyana, Brazilie en
België. Het bezoeken van beurzen en het verzorgen van
presentaties is daartoe een middel. Van essentieel belang is
ook de bereikbaarheid van Suriname. Die is al vergroot door
het toelaten van een derde carrier op de route AmsterdamParamaribo. Ook in de regio is het aantal vliegbewegingen
op de regionale routes opgevoerd. De ontwikkeling van het
cruisetoerisme komt langzaam op gang en geeft voldoende
mogelijkheden om uitgebouwd te worden, zodat ook
kleinere cruiseschepen Suriname kunnen aandoen.
Suriname, Frans Guyana en Amapá in Brazilië, hebben zich

onlangs opnieuw gebundeld om gezamenlijk toeristische
producten te ontwikkelen, zodat bezoekers optimaal gebruik
kunnen maken van diverse attracties in de desbetreffende
landen. Het ligt in de bedoeling dat Guyana zich in een later
stadium zal aansluiten.
Tegenwoordig werkt Suriname ook sterk aan de regionale
en internationale integratie, zodat ons land zich ook kan
profileren als Zuid-Amerikaans en Caraïbisch gebied.
Bovendien is Suriname deel van the Green Caribbean.
Hiernaast kan ons land laten zien dat inheemsen en
marrons in stamverband vredig wonen in het binnenland
en dat een deel daarvan behoort tot het Centraal Suriname
Natuurreservaat met een oppervlakte van 1.6 miljoen ha.
Samen met de historische binnenstad van Paramaribo heeft
de UNESCO deze op de Werelderfgoedlijst geplaatst. Onze
kathedraal in de binnenstad is het hoogste houten bouwwerk in Zuid-Amerika. Het zijn deze unieke zaken die ons
land op de wereldkaart plaatsen.
Suriname’s Place

with a land surface of 163,265 square kilometers, Suriname belongs to
the smallest countries of South America. Just slightly north of the equator,
it borders French Guiana in the east, Guyana in the west, Brazil in the south
and the Atlantic Ocean in the north.
Goal-oriented promotional activities at an

Suriname in relevant markets such as
the Netherlands, French Guiana, Brazil
and Belgium. Participation in fairs and
conducting presentations is a purposeful
means thereto. Of essential importance is
also the accessibility of Suriname. This has
already been enlarged by the admission
of a third carrier on the route AmsterdamParamaribo. The number of flights in the
Caribbean was also increased on regional
routes. The development of cruise tourism is
gradually taking its stride and offers
sufficient opportunities for expansion so
that even smaller cruise ships can call in at
port in Suriname.
Suriname, French Guiana and Amapá in
Brazil recently joined forces anew to develop
mutual tourism products so that visitors can
make maximum use of the various attractions in the respective countries. It is the
intention that Guyana will also join in these
efforts at a later stage. Momentarily,
Suriname also pursues regional and
international integration so that our country
can also present itself as belonging to both
the South American and the Caribbean re-
gion. In addition, Suriname forms part of the
Green Caribbean. What’s more, our country
uniquely shows how Amerindians
and Maroons live peacefully in tribal
communities in the interior and that part of
this interior belongs to the Central Suriname
Nature Reserve with a land surface of 1.6
million hectares. Together with the historic
inner city of Paramaribo, this nature reserve
has been placed on the UNESCO World
Heritage List. Our cathedral is the highest
wooden construction in South America.
These are all unique facts that place our
country on the world map.

Essentiel est également la joignabilité du
Suriname. Ce fait a été agrandit par l’accueil
d’un troisième pacquebot faisant la route
Amsterdam-Paramaribo. Mais aussi dans la
région les activités aériennes inter régionales ont augmentées. Le developpement du
tourisme de croisière se dévellope doucement et offre assez de possibilités pour être
agrandit afin que même de petites croisières
peuvent être accomodées au Suriname.

des Caraïbes. En plus le Suriname fait parti
de « la Caraibe verte ».
En plus de cela notre pays peut montrer
que les indigènes et les marrons vivent
harmonieusement ensemble au centre du
Suriname dans la reserve naturelle d’une
superficie de 1.6 millions d’hectare.
Ensemble avec le centre historique de
Paramaribo elle à été placé sur la liste du
poitrimoine mondial de l’Unesco. Notre
cathédrale au centre-ville est le plus haut
batiment en bois de l’Amérique du Sud. Ce
sont ces aspects uniques qui definicent la
place du Suriname sur la carte du Monde.
