Nouvelle épidémie mondiale
Nouveau chanteur, nouvel album et nouvelle tournée ! Pourtant, la
musique de Divine Heresy reste ce qu'elle est : un metal puissant forgé
sur des bases solides et des musiciens expérimentés. Elan sidérurgique
aux allures débridées, Bringer Og Plagues est le premier essai de
Travis Neal au sein du groupe californien. Il a gentiment accepté de
nous parler de son adaptation dans le groupe, et de l'écriture de ce
nouveau disque.

Sponge (Rock'N'Balls) : Hello Travis ! Alors comment se sent Divine Heresy pour le
moment, avec la sortie de votre nouvel album « Bringer Of Plagues » ? Est-ce que les
retours et réactions sont bons ?
Travis : Hello Sponge ! Oui les réactions sont formidables !! Les gens adorent vraiment les
nouvelles chansons !
S : La seule chose que l'on sait de toi est que tu chantes également d'un un groupe de
death metal mélodique suédois qui s'appelle « The Bereaver ». Peux-tu nous parler un
peu de ton histoire musicale et de ton background ? Qu'est-ce que tu écoutes pour le
moment ?

Travis : Oui effectivement, je chante dans le groupe suédois « The Bereaved ». Je joue aussi
dans deux projets américains, « Hatetimesnine » et « Kemikal Burn ». Mon background
musical est très large. J'ai toujours vécu dans la musique, et depuis que j'ai dix ans, je sais
que je veux y faire carrière. Je peux aussi dire que je ne suis pas né avec une voix parfaite, il
a fallu des années d'entraînement pour la perfectionner jusqu'à ce qu'elle devienne ce qu'elle
est maintenant. Personnellement, je ne pense pas être un chanteur exceptionnel, je suis un
bon chanteur, mais je bosse dur tous les jours pour faire évoluer mes capacités le plus
possible. Pour l'instant, j'écoute beaucoup de choses différentes du metal. Quand tu bosses
en temps plein dans un groupe de metal « extrême », quand tu rentres chez toi ou que tu as
un break pendant une tournée, la dernière chose que tu as envie d'écouter, c'est du metal
(rire).

S : Comment as-tu vécu ton recrutement au sein de Divine Heresy ? Est-ce que tu t'es
rapidement adapté au groupe ? Est-ce que les demandes de Dino étaient précises ou
est-ce qu'il t'a laissé faire ce que tu voulais sur les chansons ?
Travis : Il m'a laissé reigner totalement sur ces chansons. Dino et le groupe avait confiance
en ma capacité à écrire les arrangements vocaux et les paroles que conviendraient à la
musique que Divine Heresy était en train de composer. Je m'y suis adapté presque
instantanément, on s'est tout de suite bien entendu, et on a bien travaillé ensemble dès mon
audition.
S : Etait-ce vraiment facile pour toi d'arriver dans un groupe qui avait déjà sorti un
premier bon album ? Et n'était-ce pas difficile pour Divine Heresy d'apporter un
nouveau chanteur sur sa musique déjà connue du public ?
Travis : Je dois dire que c'était un peu stressant d'arriver dans un groupe déjà établi et de
devoir composer avec des bases qui avaient été posées par un autre chanteur. Mais je savais
ce que j'avais à faire pour m'en sortir, il fallait que je monte encore d'un cran si je ne voulais
pas passer pour l'éternel second. Je ne veux pas être ce second musicalement ! Je sens que
j'ai vraiment fait du bon travail en arrivant dans ce groupe, et d'après les rapports de vente
dans le monde entier, nos auditeurs pensent la même chose que moi !
S : Que penses-tu avoir apporté à Divine Heresy que le groupe n'avait pas avant avec
Tommy « Vext » Cummings ? Et est-ce que tu penses avoir encore d'autres choses à
apporter aux prochains albums ?
Travis : Je pense avoir apporté plus de polyvalence au niveau de la voix, mais pas du tout
pour dire que Tommy était un mauvais chanteur. C'était un chanteur puissant et assez

incroyable. Mais qu'importe. Avec mes influences qui n'ont pas de limites, je pense avoir
apporté au groupe plus de pistes à explorer dans notre musique, et ça pour les années et les
albums à venir.

S : Divine Heresy a vendu aux alentours de 3000 copies du nouvel album aux EtatsUnis durant sa première semaine de vente, débutant à la 148ème position des Billboard
200 Charts. Est-ce que c'est suffisant pour un groupe comme le vôtre si il veut être bien
considéré ?
Travis : Oui biensûr ! On a été choqués à la vue des ventes et de nos débuts au Billboard.
C'était incroyable pour chacun de nous ! De nos jours, avec tous les gens qui téléchargent la
musique plutôt que de l'acheter, je pense que c'est super que l'on vende autant d'albums, ça
prouve que là dehors, il y a encore beaucoup de gens qui croient en nous et que achètent nos
disques plutôt que de les pirater !
S : Une fois de plus, vous avez collaboré avec la paire de producteurs Dirty Icon [note:
Logan Mader and Lucas Banker], qui a récemment produit également Cavalera
Conspiray, Gojira et Five Finger Death Punch. Est-ce que c'était un choix évident pour
vous, ou aviez-vous d'autres noms sur la liste ? Pourquoi les avoir finalement choisis ?
Travis : On voulait le meilleur que l'on pouvait offrir, et Dirty Icon était ce que l'on pouvait
trouver de mieux ! Ca nous est apparu comme le choix évident à faire quand on s'est assis
pour discuter de ce que l'on voulait faire sur ce nouvel album et du son que l'on recherchait.
Ces gars sont incroyables, et ils l'ont une fois de plus prouvé, avec une nouvel album
stupéfiant.
S : Comment cet album a-t-il été écrit ? Est-ce que tu as participé à la composition des
morceaux, comme à l'écriture des paroles comme tu nous l'a dit précédemment, ou les
chansons étaient-elles terminées lorsque tu es arrivé ?
Travis : Ils commençaient seulement à composer la musique quand j'ai rejoint le groupe.
« Facebreaker » était la première des nouvelles chansons qui fût écrite, et elle le fût après
que je sois arrivé. En fait, les gars ont pris soin d'enregistrer toutes les pistes et d'écrire toute
la musique, après quoi j'ai décomposé les chansons et écrit les mélodies et les patterns pardessus. Donc oui, j'ai écrit les paroles et composé les arrangements vocaux. J'ai aussi reçu
de l'aide sur certaines choses de la part de Dirty Icon, mais aussi de Jason Casey.
S : Quelle est ta chanson préférée sur cet album et pourquoi ? Est-ce qu'une de ces
chansons a une histoire un peu particulière ?
Travis : Mmmmm. C'est une question difficile. Peut-être « The Battle Of J.Casey ». Mon
pote Jason Casey en a écrit les paroles. Ses textes m'inspiraient vraiment, et paraissaient

fonctionner parfaitement avec l'atmosphère du morceau. Celui-là parle des démons
personnels d'un homme et de son combat dans la vie, à la recherche du droit chemin, en
trouvant le courage de regarder la défaite dans les yeux, de se battre malgré l'adversité, pour
s'élever au-dessus du tapis de cendres qui l'entoure. C'est un homme incroyable, et sa force
est la mienne quand je sens que j'en manque !
S : On peut aussi entendre sur ce disque que tu as une très bonne voix en chant clair,
comme sur « Darkness Embedded ». Est-ce un aspect de tes capacités vocales que tu
aimerais développer encore plus sur le prochain album ?
Travis : J'adore chanter en voix claire, et je le fais beaucoup dans mes autres projets. Je
pense qu'il y a un parfait mélange de voix claires et à l'arrache sur « Bringer Of Plagues » !
Je ne voudrais pas compromettre la façon dont le groupe sonne en chantant plus souvent en
voix claire ou plus souvent à l'arrache, en fait on écrira ce qui nous viendra du coeur et de
l'âme, et si la musique est mélodique, elle est mélodique. Si c'est brutal... ce sera brutal !

S : Pour le moment, on entend plus parler des problèmes entre Dino Cazares et
Christian Olde Wolbers que de la progression de Divine Heresy et de son nouvel album
« Bringer Of Plagues » ! T'en as pas marre de toutes ces conneries ? Comment Divine
Heresy arrive-t-il a survivre avec toute cette merde autour de lui, comme la
reformation de Fear Factory etc... ?
Travis : Ouais, on en fait vraiment de trop autour de tout ça. Voici mon opinion : Fear
Factory se reforme sans Raymond et Christian. Si ça sonne bien, tant mieux... eux ils ont
formé Arkaea et ça sonne bien... alors que les deux groupes continuent sur leurs voies et se
créent un avenir ! Tant que Divine Heresy existera, ces deux groupes n'auront rien à voir
avec nous. On va aller de l'avant et être simplement Divine Heresy ! Et peut-être bien que
Fear Factory et Divine Heresy tourneront ensemble et conquéreront le monde !! hahaha
S : Vous n'avez pas beaucoup de dates de concerts annoncées sur votre page MySpace.
Jusqu'il y a peu, vous n'aviez que quatre concerts en septembre. Est-ce que tu penses
que Divine Heresy va se produire en Europe dans les prochains mois ?
Travis : J'espère qu'on viendra en Europe très bientôt, oui ! J'adore jouer de ce côté de
l'océan !!! On fera une tournée complète aux Etats-Unis et au Canada avec Moonspell à
partir du 14 octobre. J'espère qu'on pourra continer avec une autre tournée dès que celle
de Moonspell sera terminée... je croise les doigts !
S : Vous venez juste d'enregistrer un clip video pour le single « Facebreaker », avec le
réalisateur renommé Brian Thompson [note: qui a aussi travaillé avec Killswitch

Engage], et je dois dire que c'est une des plus belles videos que j'ai vu ces derniers mois
! Pourquoi avoir choisi cette chanson et pas une autre ? Et quelle est l'histoire de ce
clip ? Pourquoi avez-vous opté pour ce décors apocalyptique ?
Travis : Cette chanson était la première entre toutes les nouvelles à avoir été écrite. On a
senti qu'elle possédait et la brutalité et la beauté, que c'était un bon single pour démontrer ce
dont le groupe est capable. Personnellement, je pense qu'il y a d'autres titres sur l'album qui
surpasse « Facebreaker », mais pourquoi se presser et bâcler le travail ? Et puis, ça donne
aux fans de quoi se languir (rire). Le thème de notre album est très apocalyptique, donc on a
pensé que la video devait reprendre aussi ce thème. On est très heureux de ce que Brian a
fait sur ce clip et on espère sincèrement qu'on pourra retravailler avec lui pour le prochain !
S : Ok, c'est bon pour moi. Merci Travis ! As-tu un dernier mot pour vos fans et nos

A new singer, a new album and a new tour! Yet the music of Divine
Heresy stays what it is : a powerful metal forged on solid bases and
experienced musicians. As a steel surge with unrestrained looks,
Bringer Of Plagues is the first shot of Travis Neal within the
californian band. He'd kindly accepted to talk to us about his
implication in the band, and the writing sessions of this new disc.

Sponge (Rock'N'Balls) : Hi Travis ! So how does Divine Heresy feel now with the
release of your new album « Bringer Of Plagues »? Are the feedbacks good?
Travis : Hello Sponge! Yes the reactions have been awesome!! People are really digging the
new songs!
S : The only think we know about you is that you're singing in a swedish melodic death
metal band called The Bereaver. Can you tell us what's your singer history and
musical background? What do you listen to for the moment?

Travis : Well, yes I am singing in Swedish based "The Bereaved". I also am fronting two
other US projects, "Hatetimesnine" and "Kemikal Burn". My musical background is very
extensive. I have been into music my whole life and since I was a teen, wanted to make it
my life! I can say I was not one blessed with a perfect voice. It took years of practice to
perfect what I am doing today, I still don't personally think I am a amazing singer, I am a
good singer but I still work my ass off every day to take what I can do even further. Right
now I have been listening to different stuff other than just metal. When you play in a
fulltime extreme metal band, when you are at home or on a break from tour, it is kind of the
last
thing you want to listen to :)

S : How did you live your recruitment in Divine Heresy? Did you fastly fit onto the
band? Were Dino's requests very precise or did he let you make what you wanted on
these songs?
Travis : I had free reign on these songs. Dino and the band trusted in my ability to write the
vocal arrangements and lyrics that would properly fit to the music that DH was writing. I fit
in almost instantly, we all got along great and worked together well from the time of my
audition.
S : Was it really easy for you to arrive in a band which already have a first good
album? Wasn't it difficult for Divine Heresy to bring a new vocalist on its alreadyknown music?
Travis : I would say it was a little stressful coming into an established band and having to
reach the bar set from a previous vocalist. I knew what I had to do to make this work, I had
to step it up a notch or I would just be second best. I don’t do second best in what I do
musically! I feel that I did a great job stepping into this band and by the looks of our sales
worldwide; our listeners out there feel the same!
S : What do you think you brang to Divine Heresy that the band didn't have with
Tommy « Vext » Cummings? And do you think you can bring even more for the next
albums?
Travis : I feel I have brought more versatility with my voice, not saying that Tommy was a
bad singer at all. He was a powerful, amazing singer. But, none the less. With my influences
being endless, I feel that I have gave the band more avenues to take our music and as the
years pass and the more records we put out I think the road is endless!

S : Divine Heresy sold around 3,000 copies in the United States in its first week of
release to debut at position No. 148 on The Billboard 200 chart. Is this enough for a
band like yours to be well considerated?
Travis : Yes, of course! We were shocked at the sales and the billboard debut. It was an
amazing thing for all of us! Nowadays with everybody downloading there music instead of
buying it, I think it is a great thing that we sold that amount of records and some people out
there still care enough about the band to go and buy the record instead of pirating it!
S : You've teamed up once again with acclaimed producing team Dirty Icon [note:
Logan Mader and Lucas Banker] who recently produced Cavalera Conspiray, Gojira
and Five Finger Death Punch. Was this an obvious choice or did you have some other
names on the list? Why did you finally choose them?
Travis : We wanted the best that could be offered, and Dirty Icon is second to none! It was
an obvious choice when we sat down to discuss what we wanted from this new record and
the sound we were going after. Those guys are amazing, and once again they have proven it
with another stunning release.
S : How was this album written? Did you concretely contribute to the lyrics and the
composition of the tracks, or were all the songs written when you arrived in the band?
Travis : The music was just starting when I joined. Facebreaker was the first of the new
material that was written and it was written after I joined. Basically the boys took care of
mapping out all the tracks and writing all the music, afterwards I came in and starting
breaking the tracks all down and writing the melodies and patterns over the parts. So yes, I
wrote the lyrics and vocal arrangements. I had additional help with some things from Dirty
Icon as well as Jason Casey.
S : What is your favorite track on this album and why? Did one of these songs have a
special story?
Travis : mmmmm. That is hard one. Maybe The battle of J. Casey. My good friend Jason
Casey wrote the lyrics to that track. His lyrics were very inspirational to me and seemed to
fit perfectly with the vibe of the song. The lyrics are about one man's personal demons and
struggles in life, and finding the right paths and courage to look defeat in the eye and fight
against all odds to rise above the ashes that have been scattered around him. He is an
amazing man and his strength is my strength when I feel I have none!
S : We can hear on this disc that you also have a great clear voice, like on « Darkness
Embedded ». Is this an aspect of your vocal capacities that you'd like to develop even
more on the next album?

Travis : I love to sing clean and do it a lot in my other projects. I feel that there is a perfect
mix of clean and heavy on Bringer of plagues! I would not want to compromise the sound
of the band by singing cleaner or heavier, basically we will write what comes out of our
hearts and souls and if the music is melodic, it is melodic. If it is brutal, it will be brutal!!

S : For the moment, we hear more about the troubles between Dino Cazares and
Christian Old Wolbers than about the progression of Divine Heresy and the new
album « Bringer of Plagues ». Aren't you bored about all these stuff? How can Divine
Heresy survive with all that shit around it, like Fear Factory reforming etc... ?
Travis : Ya, it is kind of played out. My opinion is this. If Fear Factory is reforming without
Raymond and Christian, then so be it. If it is good then it's good.. Those two have Arkea and
it is good.. So both bands go their own ways and make a future! As far as DH goes, the 2
bands have nothing to do with us. We will press on forward and be DH! If anything, FF and
DH will tour together and conquer the world!! hahaha
S : You don't have a lot of dates announced on your MySpace page for the moment.
Only four gigs in September. Do you think that Divine Heresy will hit the road in
Europe in the next months?
Travis : I hope we hit Europe very soon! I love it over seas!!! We will be doing a full US
and Canada tour with Moonspell starting on October 14th. Hopefully we can continue the
path and get on another tour over there when the Moonspell tour is over.. I'm keeping my
fingers crossed!
S : You've just recorded a video clip for the single « Facebreaker », with renowned
director Brian Thompson [note: who also worked with Killswitch Engage], and I must
say that it's one of the nicest video I've seen this last months! Why did you choose this
song and not another? And what is the story of this video clip? Why did you opt for
this apocalyptic scene?
Travis : The song was the first song written of the new tracks. We felt it had brutality and
beauty in the same setting, that is was a good single to showcase what the band can do. I
personally think that there are other tracks that blow that song away on the record, but why
blow our load right out of the gate? It keeps them wanting more :) . Our record has a very
apocalyptic theme behind it so we felt that the video should have that feel as well.. We are
very pleased with what Brian did and hopefully we can work with him on the next video!
