Transformation extrême
From a spa in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to a restaurant in Lake Louise,
Alberta, a bed and breakfast in Nova Scotia, an art gallery in Whitby, Ontario,
and a museum in St. John’s, Newfoundland, former train stations across
Canada have been given a new lease on life. De Saint-Jean à Lake Louise en

Railway Coastal Museum
During the Second World War, American bases around
Newfoundland used the island’s railway to transport
soldiers and supplies. The Railway Coastal Museum
is housed in the Riverhead station, built in 1903. The
building, which includes the old passenger platform,
was restored in 2003 and opened as a museum. Exhibits
about Newfoundland and Labrador’s Railway and
Coastal Boat Services include a diorama of a restored
1940s train car, photos, costumed figures, maps, and
a model train display. Open year round, the museum
inaugurates a new outdoor gallery this season with two
train cars and a locomotive.
Durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, les bases américaines
de Terre-Neuve empruntaient les chemins de fer de l’île pour
transporter soldats et matériel. La gare Riverhead, construite
en 1903, faisait partie de ce réseau. L’édifice et l’ancien quai
à voyageurs ont été restaurés et réaménagés en 2003 pour
accueillir le Railway Coastal Museum. Les expositions sur les
services de chemin de fer et de cabotage comprennent un
diorama qui montre une voiture de train restaurée, datant des
années quarante, de même que des photos, des mannequins
costumés, des cartes et un train en modèle réduit. On y a
récemment ajouté une galerie extérieure qui met en vedette
deux voitures de train et une locomotive. Le musée est ouvert
toute l’année.

Train Station Inn
The Intercolonial Railway built the Tatamagouche train
station in 1887; rail service ended in 1972. Jim LeFresne,
then only 18 years old, bought the building to prevent it
from being demolished, then restored and opened it as
an inn in 1989. Guests can sleep in the former station or
Canadian National cabooses and eat in the Dining Car,
a 1928 Canadian National and VIA Rail passenger car.

La compagnie de chemins de fer Intercolonial a construit
la gare de Tatamagouche en 1887, et celle-ci est restée en
service jusqu’en 1972. Jim LeFresne, qui n’avait alors que 18
ans, a acheté l’édifice pour empêcher qu’on le démolisse. Il
l’a ensuite restauré et réaménagé en auberge en 1989. Les
clients peuvent dormir dans l’ancienne gare ou dans des
fourgons de queue. Les repas sont servis dans la voiturerestaurant, datant de 1928, qui a été utilisée successivement
par le CN et par VIA Rail. La finition élégante évoque la belle
époque des chemins de fer.

Station Gallery
Whitby’s Grand Trunk Railway Station was slated for
demolition in 1969 when a group operating a community gallery bought the building two years later and
moved it and the Port Stanley boxcar to Henry and

Victoria Streets. In 2005, the Station Gallery was moved
again, this time across the street, and expanded to nearly
10,000 square feet. The non-profit public art gallery has a
permanent collection and features art exhibits, programs,
classes, workshops, performances, and special events for
residents of Whitby and neighbouring communities in the
Durham Region, near Toronto.
La gare de la Grand Trunk Railway, à Whitby, était sur le point de
se faire démolir, en 1969, quand les administrateurs d’une galerie
d’art locale l’ont achetée et l’ont déménagée, avec le wagon couvert Port Stanley, au coin des rues Henry et Victoria. La gare-galerie
a ensuite été déplacée à nouveau en 2005, pour se retrouver de
l’autre côté de la rue, cette fois. On l’a aussi agrandie pour porter
la surface à plus de 900 mètres carrés. En plus d’exposer sa collection permanente, la galerie d’art publique sans but lucratif tient
de nombreux événements artistiques – expositions, classes, ateliers, performances et autres – pour les habitants de Whitby et des
autres localités de la région de Durham, en banlieu de Toronto.

Lake Louise Railway Station and Restaurant
Railway workers hauled logs to this spot beside the Bow
River in 1910 to build the Lake Louise train station. By
then, the resort had seen many visitors. Passenger service
ended in 1990 and the beautifully crafted historic building
needed a new vocation. It was renovated and became a
restaurant in 1994. Customers can have a drink in the old
ticketing lobby and dine in the station’s former waiting
room. More formal dining is available in a 1928 dining car
that sits on the sidings next to the station.
Pour construire la gare ferroviaire de Lake Louise, en 1910, les
ouvriers ont dû traîner les billots jusqu’au chantier. Le service
voyageurs ayant cessé en 1990, il a fallu trouver une nouvelle
vocation au bel édifice historique. On l’a donc rénové et transformé en restaurant en 1994. Les clients peuvent prendre un
verre dans l’ancienne billetterie et manger dans l’ancienne salle
d’attente. On peut aussi se faire servir un repas plus copieux
dans une voiture-restaurant de 1928, rangée sur les voies d’évitement, à côté de la gare.

Sahara Spa
A serene Balinese ambiance, soft lighting, and the gentle
sound of a water fountain greet guests of the Sahara Spa.
This former Canadian National Railway station was built
in downtown Moose Jaw in 1919. The building sat empty
for 15 years before the abandoned and dilapidated train
station was bought and renovated. Inspired by Asian culture, traditions, and treatments during a trip to Bali in
2003, the owners converted the building into a certified
“Jamu spa” that uses Asian plants and massage techniques in its spa treatments.
La sérénité d’une ambiance balinaise, un éclairage tamisé et le
doux frémissement d’une fontaine accueillent les clients du
Sahara Spa. Cette ancienne gare du CN a été construite en plein
centre de Moose Jaw en 1919. L’édifice est resté vide et délabré
durant 15 ans avant qu’on l’achète pour le rénover. Inspirés par
la culture de l’Asie, ses traditions et ses traitements lors d’un
voyage en 2003, les propriétaires ont converti l’édifice en « spa
Jamu » certifié, offrant des traitements qui utilisent les plantes et
les techniques de massage orientales.
