It usually takes multiple exposures to catch tuberculosis. People can carry the bacterium in its inactive form for years. Active tuberculosis destroys the lungs and other parts of the body. It was formerly referred to as the white plague, because of the pale complexion of those afflicted. A sanatorium was a specialized hospital for the care and treatment of tuberculosis. Elle se propage par l’air lorsqu’une personne atteinte de tuberculose tousse ou éternue. Il faut avoir été exposé plusieurs fois à la bactérie avant de contracter la maladie. Les personnes peuvent être porteuses de la bactérie sous une forme non active pendant des années. La tuberculose active détruit des poumons et d’autres parties du corps. La tuberculose a également été appelée « consomption » en raison de la façon dont elle consomme le corps. Un sanatorium est un hôpital spécialisé dans le traitement de la tuberculose et les soins apportés aux personnes qui en sont atteintes. He was known from coast to coast as the leader of the anti-tuberculosis movement, encouraging and inspiring laymen everywhere to organize local anti-tuberculosis societies and to provide sanatorium accommodation for needy patients. (Canadian Public Health Journal, Vol. 33 1942) En 1908, Dr Porter quitte sa pratique de Toronto pour se consacrer au mouvement de lutte contre la tuberculose au Canada. Il a été reconnu d’un océan à l’autre comme le leader du mouvement contre la tuberculose, encourageant et inspirant partout les profanes pour organiser des sociétés locales contre la tuberculose et pour fournir de l’hébergement en sanatorium pour les patients en ayant besoin.
