Compétences générales). Communicatifs : activités de communication langagière et stratégies, capacités traitées (cf. chapitre IV). Langagiers : compétences linguistiques, sociolinguistiques et pragmatiques (cf. chapitre V, 2. Compétences spécifiques). Les Documents supports constituent autant de types de « textes » authentiques permettant de travailler les objectifs (cf. chapitre IV). La séquence pédagogique comprend correspondre à trois séances de cours. deux étapes pouvant Étape 1 Objectifs et dispositif préconisé Le but de cette étape est de découvrir les grandes étapes de la vie de Mandela. Une salle multimédia avec accès un à Internet est nécessaire. Activité 1 : brainstorming Document 1: peintures de Mandela sur le site de la BBC : www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/; cliquer sur « Paintings » et taper Mandela dans le moteur de recherche. On projette tout d’abord la peinture de Mandela en 1918, puis la seconde, que tous devraient reconnaître. On demande aux élèves ce qu’ils savent de cet homme et on inscrit les propositions au tableau. Elles seront infirmées ou confirmées au cours de la séquence. Activité 2 : pair work Document 2 : aller sur le site www.nelsonmandela.org, puis cliquer sur « Nelson Mandela Foundation » en haut à gauche, puis sur « Life and Times of Nelson Mandela », et sur « Timeline ». Les élèves travaillent par paires. Dans un premier temps, chacun lit silencieusement la page du site internet et prépare des questions pour interroger son partenaire sur les grandes étapes de la vie de Mandela. Le professeur peut, à cette occasion, faire réfléchir les élèves sur l’utilisation du prétérit, la formation et l’intonation des énoncés interrogatifs. Dans un dernier temps, il est élaboré collectivement un paragraphe retraçant les grandes étapes de la vie de Mandela. On demande comme devoir d’être capable, à l’oral, de retracer ces grandes étapes. Activité 3 : vidéo Document 3 : document vidéo : bande-annonce du film Long Walk to Freedom sur www.youtube.fr. Pour visualiser une partie des périodes évoquées lors de l’activité 2, on propose un travail sur la bande-annonce du film Long Walk to Freedom. On peut tout d’abord demander aux élèves de justifier le titre. Ils auront normalement repéré dans la chronologie le titre de l’autobiographie de Mandela, dont la publication a débuté en 1994. Les élèves reçoivent ensuite la Fiche élève 1. La correction est collective. On fait réfléchir les élèves sur l’utilisation et la prononciation du modal should (“It’s not I but the government that should plead guilty.”). Le but est de faire le lien entre cette bande-annonce et la chronologie étudiée lors de l’étape précédente. Certaines questions invitent d’ailleurs les élèves à y faire expressément référence. Étape 2 Objectifs et dispositif préconisé Le but de cette étape est de montrer l’impact qu’a eu l’action menée par Mandela sur la population d’Afrique du Sud. Une salle de classe avec un accès à Internet est nécessaire. Activité 4 : vidéo Document 4 : document vidéo : www.youtube.fr, taper « Nelson Mandela : What legacy does he leave behind? » (04 min 12 s, BBC News) dans le moteur de recherche. Le titre de la vidéo est donné aux élèves : Nelson Mandela : What legacy does he leave behind? et la question leur est posée. Deux manières de faire sont possibles. Le document peut être facilement découpé en quatre parties : de 00 min 00 s à 01 min 30 s : les pauvres à la campagne ; de 01 min 31 s à 02 min 32 s : la classe moyenne en périphérie urbaine ; de 02 min 33 s à 03 min 40 s : les ravages du Sida et de 03 min 41 s à la fin : la conclusion du journaliste. Soit les élèves travaillent seuls sur l’intégralité du document, soit la classe est divisée en trois et chaque groupe travaille sur une partie du document (et prépare un résumé oral pour le reste de la classe). Seule la conclusion fait l’objet d’un visionnage collectif. La première proposition est ici retenue. Le professeur fait réfléchir les élèves sur le style indirect car auront été reformulés à l’oral les propos des différents personnages. Activité 5 : rédaction d’un message de condoléances Les élèves se connectent sur le même site où ils ont trouvé la chronologie : sur le site www.nelsonmandela.org/, cliquer sur « Nelson Mandela Foundation » en haut à gauche, puis sur « Send your message of condolences and tributes here » en haut. Ils écrivent leur message et l’envoient. Ce sera pour eux l’occasion de mobiliser tout ce qui a été vu au cours de la séquence. Prolongements éventuels Le site des langues de l’académie de Dijon (rubrique « Anglais, dossiers thématiques ») propose de nombreuses ressources, en particulier des pistes d’exploitation du film, qui peuvent faire l’objet d’une étude complète. L’étude des unes de la presse à l’occasion de la mort de Mandela.
