Introductie
INTRODUCTION
N Deze herfst gaat EUROPALIA TURKEY van
start en opent de centrale tentoonstelling,
Anatolia (p.13). Een erfgoedtentoonstelling
in BOZAR rond het belang en doorleven
van rituelen: een inleiding op het gastland,
vanuit een nieuwe en boeiende invalshoek
én een toeganspoort tot het festival.
We brengen verder aan de ene kant
klassiekers en gevestigde namen, als
ambassadeurs van de Turkse kunsten:
de draaiende derwisjen uit Konya, het
traditionele schimmentheater Karagöz,
maar ook grote hedendaagse kunstenaars
als Gülsün Karamustafa (De Centrale for
Contemporary Art & Argos, p.24), Hüseyin
Bahri Alptekin (M HKA, p.25), Ayşe Erkmen
(SMAK, p.26) en Gouden Palmwinnaar Nuri
Bilge Ceylan (p.27).
Een eerbetoon aan Istanbul mocht ook niet
ontbreken. Twee hoofdtentoonstellingen
voeren u naar de legendarische stad.
Imagine Istanbul in Bozar toont de
inspirerende stad door het oog van
fotografen, filmmakers en beeldende
kunstenaars (p.17). Istanbul-Antwerpen.
Twee havens. Twee steden. in het MAS
bekijkt wat de aanwezigheid van water voor
een stad en haar inwoners betekent (p.21).
Dit 25ste festival wordt ook een laboratorium.
Een laboratorium voor onze nieuwe
missie, waarin we naast de gebruikelijke
erfgoedprojecten en hedendaagse
projecten, de noties creatie en uitwisseling
naar voren schuiven.
Zo nodigde een hele reeks venues in België
en omstreken Turkse kunstenaars uit om in
dialoog te gaan met de locale kunstscène
en om nieuw werk te creëren. EUROPALIA

zelf organiseerde in Istanbul een heus
EUROPALIA TURKEY appartement, waar
kunstenaars op residentie konden gaan naar
aanleiding van het festival.
En zo zal er overal nieuw werk van
uiteenlopende kunstenaars te zien of
te horen zijn: beeldend kunstenaar
Gauthier Oushoorn in het CID (p.28),
geluidskunstenaar Débruit en fotografe
Bieke Depoorter in BOZAR (p.17), danser
Melih Kıraç in Workspacebrussels (p.77)…
Gedurende de 4 maanden van het
festival zijn er ook continu verrassende
samenwerkingen te ontdekken: jazzpianist
Jef Neve met digital artist Candaş Şişman
(p.60), percussionist Okay Temiz met La
Fanfare du Belgistan (p.60), componist
Mustafa Özkent met een Belgische
gelegenheidsband (p.62), misdaadschrijvers
Ahmet Ümit en Pascale Fontenau (p.92)…
Zo hebben we er met dit programma
niet naar gestreefd om exhaustief te zijn,
wel om een divers beeld te geven van een
rijk patrimonium en een sterke artistieke
scène met veel ruimte voor nieuwe creaties
en dialoog tussen kunstenaars.

F Le coup d’envoi du festival EUROPALIA
TURKEY sera donné cet automne, avec
l’inauguration de l’exposition phare
Anatolia à BOZAR (p.13). Une exposition
patrimoniale qui se penche sur l’importance
et la pérennité des rituels : elle présente
ainsi le pays invité sous un angle nouveau,
captivant et constitue une véritable porte
d’entrée du festival.
Nous avons prévu des classiques et des
noms connus pour être les ambassadeurs de
l’art turc: les derviches tourneurs de Konya,
le théâtre d’ombre traditionnel Karagöz,
mais aussi de grands artistes contemporains
comme Gülsün Karamustafa (De Centrale for
Contemporary Art & Argos, p.24), Hüseyin
Bahri Alptekin (M HKA, p.25), Ayşe Erkmen
(SMAK, p.26), ainsi que lauréat de la Palme
d’or, Nuri Bilge Ceylan (p.27).
Il était inconcevable de ne pas rendre
hommage à Istanbul. Deux grandes
expositions vous feront donc naviguer dans
les méandres de cette ville légendaire.
Imagine Istanbul, à BOZAR, révèle cette
ville inspirante à travers le regard de
photographes, d’écrivains, de cinéastes et
d’artistes plasticiens (p.17). Istanbul-Anvers.
Deux ports. Deux villes. au MAS se penche,
quant à elle, sur les effets de la présence de
l’eau sur une ville et sur ses habitants (p.21).
Ce 25ème festival sera un véritable
laboratoire. Le laboratoire de notre nouvelle
mission : outre les projets patrimoniaux et
les événements contemporains qui nous
sont coutumiers, nous faisons dorénavant
la part belle aux notions de création et
d’échange. Divers partenaires culturels
situés en Belgique et dans les pays

limitrophes ont invité des artistes turcs à
dialoguer avec la scène artistique locale et
à créer de nouvelles œuvres. EUROPALIA
a même aménagé un authentique
appartement EUROPALIA TURKEY à Istanbul,
destiné à accueillir des artistes en résidence
à l’occasion du festival.

We are bringing forward more classic
and established names as ambassadors
of the Turkish arts: the whirling dervishes
of Konya, the traditional shadow theatre
Karagöz, but also essential contemporary
artists such as Gülsün Karamustafa (De
Centrale for Contemporary Art & Argos
p.24), Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin (M HKA p.25),
Ayse Erkmen (SMAK p.26) and the winner of
the Palme d’Or Nuri Bilge Ceylan (p.27).
Furthermore, surprising collaborations will
be unveiled throughout the 4 months of
the festival: the jazz pianist Jef Neve with
the digital artist Candaş Şişman (p.60), the
percussionist Okay Temiz with La Fanfare
du Belgistan (p.60), the composer Mustafa
Özkent with a Belgian band specifically
formed for this occasion (p.62), the crime
writers Ahmet Ümit and Pascale Fonteneau

The festival would not be complete without
a proper tribute to Istanbul. Two main
exhibitions take you to the legendary
city. Imagine Istanbul (Bozar) sheds light
on the inspiring city through the eye of
photographers, writers, directors and visual
artists (p.17). Port City Talks. Istanbul-Antwerp
(MAS) explores the decisive role played by
water for a city and its inhabitants (p.21).
The programme is not meant to be
exhaustive but aims to give a diverse
overview of a rich heritage and a strong
artistic scene with plenty of room for new
creations and dialogue between artists. We
gladly welcome you this upcoming autumn
to EUROPALIA TURKEY!

surprenantes collaborations qui seront
présentées en continu pendant toute la
durée – 4 mois – du festival : le pianiste de

diversité de ce riche patrimoine et de cette
solide scène artistique, où les nouvelles
créations et le dialogue entre les artistes ont
toute leur place. C’est avec plaisir que nous
vous accueillons au festival EUROPALIA
TURKEY à la fin de cette année !
This 25th edition of the festival will also be a
laboratory. A laboratory for our new mission
where, alongside the usual heritage and
contemporary projects, we will put forward
the notions of creation and exchange.
Indeed, a wide range of venues in Belgium
and its surroundings invited Turkish artists
in order to engage them in a dialogue with
the local art scene and create new works.
EUROPALIA even set up a EUROPALIA
TURKEY flat in Istanbul where the artists
were invited for a residency.

Olympian gods, from Christianity to Islam: Anatolia is a land of migrations, with civilisations and cultures succeeding one another, co-existing and blending for thousands of years. ANATOLIA. Home of Eternity
highlights the remarkable continuity down the ages of worship and
cults linked to the cosmos, nature, the divine and power, from prehistoric times to the 20th century. More than 200 archaeological items,
miniatures and rare and precious objects and textiles – some of which
have never been shown before – reveal this unique, many-sided and
fascinating face of ancient Turkey.

N Imagine Istanbul is een portret van Turkijes legendarische stad die
al sinds de 19de eeuw zowel Turkse als andere kunstenaars inspireert.
Naast foto’s van de grote Ara Güler – het ‘Oog van Istanbul’ – wordt
werk van de hedendaagse Turkse fotografen Ahmet Polat en Ali Taptık
getoond. Daarnaast ook foto’s van Europese fotografen zoals Henri
Cartier-Bresson en Bieke Depoorter, die nieuw werk voor de expo
maakte. Het parcours is ontworpen als een fotografische reis en wordt
aangevuld met muziek van Débruit (met nieuwe composities voor
de expo), interviews (o.a. met Orhan Pamuk), films en installaties van
Ayşe Erkmen, Sophie Calle, Atelier Bow-Wow en Kasper Bosmans.

Alongside the work of Ara Güler – the iconic “Eye of Istanbul” – are

N In Istanbul – Antwerpen. Twee havens. Twee steden vertellen
audiovisuele kunstwerken, archeologische vondsten en treffende
historische objecten het parallelle verhaal van Istanbul en Antwerpen.
Bezoekers maken er een multimediale reis langs de Bosporus, de
Gouden Hoorn en de Schelde. Wat betekent een haven en de aanwezigheid van water voor een stad? Hoe wordt zo’n havenstad geleefd,
doorkruist, bebouwd, … Hoe is dat in Istanbul? En in Antwerpen?
Een groep Turkse hedendaagse kunstenaars creëerden nieuw werk
rond dit thema. In foto’s, video’s en installaties werpen ze een nieuw
licht op de torens van Istanbul en Antwerpen. Ze belichten de dokken,
kranen en scheepswerven in beide havens en leiden de bezoeker over
de bruggen van de Bosporus en door de tunnels onder de Schelde.

villes, les œuvres audiovisuelles, les découvertes archéologiques et
de remarquables objets historiques retracent les histoires parallèles
d’Istanbul et d’Anvers. Les infrastructures multimédia font voyager
le public le long du Bosphore, de la Corne d’Or et de l’Escaut.
L’exposition observe les effets de la présence de l’eau et d’un port
sur une ville. Comment habite-t-on une ville portuaire ? Comment
y circule-t-on ? Comment se construit-elle ? Qu’en est-il d’Istanbul ?
Et d’Anvers ? Un groupe d’artistes turcs contemporains s’est penché
sur ce thème pour créer de nouvelles œuvres. Leurs photos, vidéos
et installations portent un regard neuf sur les cimes d’Istanbul et
d’Anvers. Les quais, les grues et les chantiers navals des deux ports
captent l’attention du public, l’entraînant ainsi sur les ponts du
Bosphore et dans les galeries sous l’Escaut.

logical findings and stunning historical objects tell the parallel story
of Istanbul and Antwerp. Visitors take a multimedia trip alongside the
Bosporus, the Golden Horn and the Scheldt. What do a port and the
presence of water imply for a city? How is a port city experienced,
crossed, built…? How is it in Istanbul? And in Antwerp?
A group of Turkish contemporary artists created new works around
this topic. With pictures, videos and installation they shed light upon
the towers of Istanbul and Antwerp. They bring into the open the
docks, cranes and shipyards in both harbours and lead the visitor
over the bridges of the Bosporus and through the tunnels under
the Scheldt.

Te bekijken in het MAS: enkele schakels van de enorme
ketting die in het Byzantijnse tijdperk de toegang
verhinderde van ongewenste schepen in de Gouden
Hoorn, de natuurlijke haven van Constantinopel.
Ze werd gespannen tussen de stad en de Galatatoren
aan de andere kant van de zeestraat en was honderden
meters lang. Ze werd maar een keer gebroken, door de
Venetianen in 1204.
A voir au MAS, quelques maillons de l’énorme chaîne
qui interdisait, à l’époque byzantine, l’entrée de
bateaux indésirables dans la Corne d’Or, le port
naturel de Constantinople. Tendue depuis la ville
jusqu’à la tour de Galata de l’autre côté du détroit, elle
faisait plusieurs centaines de mètres de long. Elle ne
fut brisée qu’une seule fois, par les Vénitiens, en 1204.
On view at MAS are a few links from the huge
chain that, during the Byzantine era, prevented
undesirable boats from entering the Golden Horn,
Constantinople’s natural port. Several hundred metres
long, it used to be hung between the city and the
Galata Tower on the other side of the strait. It has only
been broken once: by the Venetians in 1204.

situaties of architecturale omgevingen in. Het werk van Ann Veronica
Janssens situeert zich dan weer in de zintuiglijke ervaring van de ontmoeting tussen het lichaam en de ruimte. Door deze tentoonstelling,
kunnen we de stedelijke interventie die ze plannen voor het historische
centrum van Gent situeren in de context van hun respectievelijke werk.
F Dans sa pratique artistique Ayşe Erkmen intervient sur des situations sociales ou des environnements architecturaux existants. Le
travail d’Ann Veronica Janssens se situe quant à lui dans l’expérience
sensorielle de la rencontre entre le corps et l’espace. Cette exposition
permet de situer l’intervention urbaine qu’elles préparent pour le centre
historique de Gand dans le contexte de leur œuvre respective.

N De jonge kunstenaar Gauthier Oushoorn toont en contextualiseert
het resultaat van zijn verblijf in Istanbul en het oosten van Turkije met
video’s, tekeningen en foto’s. Hij inspireerde zich op het esoterische
soefiprincipe van eenheid in veelheid voor een aantal artistieke en
architecturale interventies, die verschillende componenten van de
architectuur in de islamwereld illustreren.
F Le jeune artiste Gauthier Oushoorn expose et met en contexte,
à l’aide de vidéos, dessins, sculptures et photos, le résultat de sa
résidence à Istanbul et dans l’est de la Turquie. S’inspirant du principe
ésotérique soufi d’unité dans le multiple, il y a fait des interventions
artistico-architecturales illustrant différentes composantes de l’architecture en terres d’Islam.

timediakunstenaars van erg hoog niveau zien opkomen. Les Halles de
Schaerbeek, Flagey en Brass bieden een overzicht van het beste wat het
land te bieden heeft. Het werk van een tiental kunstenaars zal er te zien
zijn, met onder andere audiovisuele installaties, mapping en hologrammen.

N De trapeziumvormige en zeer
fijn versierde kanun is een tafelciter
die in Turkije al sinds de Byzantijnse
tijd bekend is. Het bespelen van de
dunne snaren en de hendels om
de toonaard te veranderen vereist
al een zeer groot meesterschap
maar het stemmen van de 78 tot 81
snaren is een kunst op zichzelf.

N De tambur is een soort luit.
Het was het meest verspreide
instrument aan het Ottomaanse
hof maar omdat hij een bijzonder
lange hals heeft, maakte hij in de
loop der tijd plaats voor andere
luiten met een kortere hals (zoals
de bağlama), die gemakkelijker
solo te gebruiken zijn.
F Contrairement à ce qu’évoque
le nom, le tambur est un luth et
non une percussion. Il était l’instrument le plus répandu à la cour
ottomane. Se prêtant mal au solos
en raison de son manche particulièrement long, il s’est vu remplacé

N De kaval is een wijd verspreide
herdersfluit in de Balkanlanden en
Turkije. Om erop te spelen, blaast
de muzikant op 45° op een van de
afgeschuinde hoeken. De Turkse
benaming komt van ‘q-w-l’, wat
‘woord’ betekent in het Arabisch.
F Le kaval est une flûte pastorale
très répandue dans les Balkans
et en Turquie. Pour en jouer, le
musicien souffle à 45° à l’un des
angles biseautés. Son nom turc a
pour origine « q-w-l », ce qui signifie
« parole » en arabe.

N De Mevlevi-orde heeft haar bekendheid
te danken aan de derwisjen, de vertolkers
van de traditionele draaiende dans. Als
poppen op een onzichtbare as draaien ze
tot de duizeling hen naar het goddelijke
leidt. De muziek geeft ritme aan de
trance en brengt zelfs de meest stoïcijnse
toeschouwers in vervoering.
F L’ordre des Mevlevî doit sa célébrité
aux derviches tourneurs, interprètes de sa
danse traditionnelle. Tels des poupées sur
un axe invisible, ils tournent jusqu’au vertige
les menant au divin. La musique rythme la
transe et transportera au passage même le
plus impassible des spectateurs.
E The Mevlevi order owes its fame to the
whirling dervishes, the performers of its
traditional dance. Like dolls on an invisible
axis, they spin to the point of giddiness,

N De hit Holigan – massaal overgenomen
door voetbalfans bij de release in 1998 –
bezorgde de ska-punkgroep een onverwachte bekendheid in Turkije maar ook in
Duitsland. Sindsdien heeft de groep niets
van zijn onstuimigheid verloren: duizenden
fans wonen hun concerten bij. En net zoals
alle ska-punk swingt het!
F Le hit Holigan – repris en masse par les
fans de foot à sa sortie en 1998– a valu à
ce groupe ska punk une notoriété inopinée
en Turquie et même en Allemagne. Depuis,
le groupe n’a rien perdu de sa fougue : ses

elektronische livemuziek van Cem Yıldız.

Qui est ce nous ? WE est une recherche intime sur la mémoire, l’oubli,
la vie, la mort, les forces et faiblesses. Trois danseurs se rejoignent,
se déchirent, sur une mise en scène de Dehmen et la musique

intimate piece of research into memory, forgetting, life, death, forces

en dans via videobeelden en installaties.

N Amigo werd geboren in Turkije en groeide op in Berlijn. Om zijn
dubbele identiteit uit te drukken, maakte hij zich meester van de
zeybek*. Zoals de naam zegt, is Zeybreak een samentrekking van
zeybek en breakdance, van de traditionele dans van zijn geboortedorp
aan de oevers van de Egeïsche Zee en de hiphop van zijn urbane ik.
F Amigo est né en Turquie et a grandi à Berlin : il s’empare du
zeybek* pour exprimer sa double identité. A l’instar du nom, le
Zeybreak est une contraction entre le zeybek et la breakdance, entre
la danse traditionnelle de son village natal des rives de la mer Egée et
le hip-hop de son moi urbain.
E Amigo was born in Turkey and raised in Berlin and uses the
zeybek* to express his dual identity. As its name suggests, Zeybreak
is a contraction of zeybek and breakdance, between the traditional
dance of his home village on the shores of the Aegean Sea and the
hip-hop of his urban self.
CONTEMPORARY
* The zeybek is a traditional dance from the
Aegean Sea named after the mercenaries of
the Ottoman army whose bravery and honesty
it imitates. Featuring leaps, genuflexions and
pirouettes, the dancer moves freely from one
movement to the next, with each rhythmical
stop acclaimed by the audience.

* Le Zeybek est une danse traditionnelle de la
mer Égée nommée d’après les mercenaires de
l’armée ottomane dont elle mime la bravoure et
l’honnêteté. Sauts, génuflexions ou pirouettes :

acclamé par le public.

van de bewegingen van de draaiende derwisjen om er een nieuwe
vorm uit te doen ontstaan. In Ember zijn de draaibewegingen de bron

atelier voor levende kunsten dat opkomende kunstenaars ondersteunt –

en performer en begon zijn carrière met Anatolische volksdansen voor
hij zich tot de hedendaagse dans wendde.
F A l’occasion du festival, Workspacebrussels, atelier des arts vivants
qui soutient les artistes émergents, invite en résidence l’artiste stambouliote Melih Kıraç. Danseur et interprète, Melih a débuté sa carrière
dans les danses folkloriques d’Anatolie avant de se tourner vers la
danse contemporaine.

histoire vraie is gebaseerd op traditionele Turkse dansen. Acht dansers
storten zich in primitieve rondedansen en rock, op de muziek van
Didier Ambact en King Q4, die zowel tribaal als psychedelisch is. In
Ad Noctum gaan zijn twee topdansers Julie Guibert en Kerem Gelebek
een interactie aan met een totem van beelden, geluid en licht van
de Taiwanese kunstenaar Iuan-Hau Chiang. Sakınan göze çöp batar
tot slot, is een solo geschreven voor Kerem Gelebek en gaat over
ballingschap, een thema dat deze danser van Turkse origine bekend
is. De titel is een Turks gezegde – “Precies het oog dat je beschermt,
zal worden doorboord” – : als je jezelf te veel wilt beschermen, dan
gebeurt het ergste.

N Het theater van Cengiz Özek brengt al verschillende jaren moderne
adaptaties van het schimmentheater Karagöz. Het hier voorgestelde
Magic Tree en Garbage Monster zijn gebaseerd op de Karagöz uit de
18de en 19de eeuw maar ook op de Sprookjes van 1001 Nacht en op Hans
Christian Andersen.
F Le théâtre de Cengiz Özek propose depuis de nombreuses années
des adaptations modernes du théâtre d’ombre Karagöz. Magic Tree et

verleden die in de loop der tijden door de rivier Botan meegevoerd
werden. De folkloristische en historische dansen van Botan worden
begeleid door de melodieën van de dengbej – tegelijkertijd verteller
en zanger – en door videobeelden die de oude beschavingen van de
oevers van de rivier weer tot leven brengen.
F La Légende de Botan, ce sont les histoires d’amour, de souffrance
et du passé charriées par le fleuve au fil du temps. Les danses
folkloriques et histoires du Botan sont accompagnées par les
mélodies du dengbej – à la fois conteur et chanteur – et par des
vidéos ressuscitant les anciennes civilisations de ses berges.
E Legend of Botan are stories of love, suffering and the past sweeping
down the Botan River as time goes by. The folk dances and stories of
Botan are accompanied by the melodies of the dengbej – storyteller
and singer in one – and by videos bringing the ancient civilisations

N Als bewonderaar van Ozu, Tsjechov, Bergman, Tarkovsky… valt
Ceylan op door zijn eigen trage, poëtische, geconcentreerde stijl. Zijn
weidse, precieze en fotografische opnames brengen de toeschouwer
over naar een zowel eenzame als sublieme wereld. Hij is de meest zichtbare Turkse regisseur, vooral sinds zijn Gouden Palm voor Winter Sleep
in 2014. Cinematek en BOZAR nodigen hem uit voor een masterclass.
F Admirateur d’Ozu, Chekhov, Bergman, Tarkovsky… Ceylan se distingue par son propre style lent, poétique, concentré. Ses plans larges,
précis et photographiques transportent le spectateur dans un monde

auteur en regisseur. Hij werd twee keer

Nadi-literatuurprijs voor zijn debuutroman,

Deze keer nodigt het Faruk Hacıhafızoğlu
uit om zijn eerste film te presenteren, Snow
Pirates. De film vertelt over de complexe
en avontuurlijke zoektocht naar steenkool
van drie kinderen in het Turkije van na de
staatsgreep van 1980.

fête. Il invite cette fois Faruk Hacıhafızoğlu à

Istanbul. De actie van zijn detectiveromans
speelt zich af in de meanders van de stad die hij
door en door kent. Istanbul en haar geschiedenis zijn alomtegenwoordig, zozeer dat Ümits
personages dienen als thema voor literaire wandelingen die in de stad worden georganiseerd.
* Pascale Fonteneau is geboren in Bretagne
en woont al verschillende jaren in Brussel.
Ze schrijft detectiveromans omdat ze zo de
meest duistere plekken van onze samenleving
kan doorzoeken. Haar verhalen gaan over het
noodlot, gekruid met een flinke dosis cynisme
en fatalisme.

N Enis Batur is dichter en essayist en heeft
een passie voor de art brut. Vandaar zijn passage bij art)&(marges. Batur is een belangrijk
figuur in de letteren en cultuur in Turkije en
publiceerde de voorbije 35 jaar meer dan 100
werken. Veel van zijn romans, dichtbundels,
essays… werden vertaald in het Frans, Italiaans,
Perzisch, Arabisch, Engels en Roemeens.
F Enis Batur est poète, essayiste et passionné
par l’art brut. Personnage important des lettres
et de la culture en Turquie, il a publié plus
de 100 ouvrages au cours des 35 dernières
années. Nombre de ses romans, recueils de
poésie, essais… ont été traduits en français,
italien, perse, arabe, anglais et roumain.
E A leading figure in Turkish literature and
culture, essayist and poet Enis Batur has

* Nasreddin Hodja, vereeuwigd door een standbeeld in
Schaarbeek, is een mythische Turkse filosoof die in de 13de
eeuw zou hebben geleefd. Zijn grappige of absurde verhalen
– waar de wijze doet alsof hij fratsen uithaalt om die van de
mens beter te kunnen beschrijven – werden gebruikt in de
volksopvoeding van Turkije tot de Mahreblanden en van het
Midden-Oosten tot India.
* Nasreddin Hodja, immortalisé par une statue à
Schaerbeek, est un philosophe turc mythique qui aurait
vécu au 13ème siècle. Ses histoires drôles ou absurdes – où
le sage feint la bouffonnerie pour mieux dépeindre celle des
hommes – ont servi d’enseignement populaire de la Turquie
au Maghreb et du Moyen-Orient jusqu’en Inde.

N Het is een traditie geworden: ter
gelegenheid van de EUROPALIA-festivals
scharen de bibliotheken zich achter
het project en hullen ze zich in de
kleuren van het gastland. Verschillende
bibliotheeknetwerken doen ook deze
keer mee door workshops, conferenties,
themaweken en filmprojecties over Turkije
aan te bieden. Sommige grijpen de kans
aan om ook hun Turkse boekencollectie en
filmverzameling uit te breiden. EUROPALIA
TURKEY zal dus in heel Belgie aanwezig zijn
via de deelnemende bibliotheeknetwerken.

des festivals EUROPALIA, les bibliothèques
se joignent au projet et se mettent aux
couleurs du pays invité. Plusieurs réseaux
de bibliothèques participent à la fête en
proposant des ateliers, conférences, des

herschilderen. De 2 graffitikunstenaars
werken hiervoor voor de eerste keer samen
met het team van de Sk8boarders.
Het nieuwe fresco wordt feestelijk geopend
ter gelegenheid van de autoloze zondag en
zal het ganse festival te bewonderen zijn.

skatepark des Ursulines à Bruxelles. Ces
deux artistes collaborent avec l’équipe de
Sk8boarders pour proposer une nouvelle et
inédite collaboration. L’inauguration festive
de la fresque a lieu à l’occasion de
la journée sans voiture et est visible durant
tout le festival.

One single field un-detachable from the
long history of human beings is culture.
Going back to the origins one could
easily see that culture starts not only
with the existence of humanity but as
the first and the most powerful remedy
to the existence of man. We produced,
we cultivated we survived and we created culture.
But it is hardly evident that we are
standing at point zero of that long history. In the last 30.000 years we created
new heavens, technology, a part and
parcel of culture, leads us to the stars.
However we are in the very detrimental
need of peace, mutual understanding, tolerance and co-existence. It is only through
art that we can communicate among ourselves without compromise without prejudices and without differentiation.
Culture and art in alignment with it,
are the home for us since we have been
human beings.
So Anatolia...
As the bridge to different cultures it
is also a bridge to the differences, as the
bridge to different ethnicities all through
history it is also a bridge to different identities, to different languages.
But more important than all Anatolia
has always been the sole soil of the concomitance, convergence and togetherness of different religions.
Eventually Turks coming from the
Seljukian and Ottoman background
have embraced anything ever produced by and in Anatolia. Islam with its
enormous tolerance to differences has
always been proud of the flourishing of
other religions in Anatolia feeling this
wide and fecund earth as their homes.
Today we are passing through one of
the most adorable time periods. Every
day we are facing a new but giant step
towards future and we conceive future
as today. Yet we are fully aware of the

troubles. Art shaped in Anatolia, culture
produced in Anatolia has always been a
call for peace, friendship, solidarity.
In that regard we say Anatolia is the
home of eternity and in that regard we
are presenting the art and culture it has
produced with grace.
Diplomatie, een hele kunst
Kunst en diplomatie vullen elkaar aan en zijn nauw met elkaar verbonden. Cultuur is
een essentieel element van de identiteit van een land en laat toe waarden te delen
met de rest van de wereld. Kunst, in al zijn vormen, zet aan tot een culturele dialoog
en creëert banden. Dit jaar zet het tweejaarlijkse festival Europalia Turkije in de kijker.
Turkije is een waar openluchtmuseum en heeft een uitzonderlijk rijk en divers
cultureel erfgoed.
Als partner van het festival Europalia legt de FOD Buitenlandse Zaken de nadruk op de
goede relaties die België en Turkije al vele jaren onderhouden. Getuigen hiervan onder
meer de feestelijkheden in 2014 rond 50 jaar Turkse immigratie naar België en het
bloementapijt op de Brusselse Grote Markt, geïnspireerd op de beroemde Turkse kilims.
Europalia Turkije wil op die manier bijdragen tot het wederzijds begrip tussen
culturen, dat zo belangrijk is vandaag.
La diplomatie, tout un art
L’art et la diplomatie sont complémentaires et étroitement liés. La culture,
composante essentielle de l’identité d’un pays, permet de partager les valeurs
qu’elle incarne avec le reste du monde. L’art sous toutes ses formes engage le
dialogue culturel et crée des liens. Cette année, le Festival biennal Europalia met la
Turquie à l’honneur. Véritable musée à ciel ouvert, la Turquie regorge d’un patrimoine
culturel extraordinairement riche et diversifié.
En tant que partenaire du festival Europalia, le SPF Affaires étrangères entend
rappeler les bonnes relations qu’entretiennent la Belgique et la Turquie depuis de
nombreuses années. En témoignent notamment les festivités organisées en 2014
pour les 50 ans de l'immigration turque en Belgique ainsi que le fameux Tapis de
Fleurs de la Grand-Place de Bruxelles inspiré des célèbres kilims.
Le festival Europalia Turquie veut ainsi contribuer à la compréhension réciproque des
cultures, si essentielle aujourd’hui.
The art of diplomacy
Art and diplomacy are complementary and closely linked. Culture, an essential
element of the identity of a country, allows to share its values with the rest of the
world. Art, in all its forms, provokes cultural dialogue and creates bonds. This year,
the biennial festival Europalia is dedicated to Turkey. A true open air museum, Turkey
has an extraordinarily rich and diversified cultural heritage.
As a partner of the Europalia festival, the FPS Foreign Affairs underlines the good
relations that Belgium and Turkey have since many years. Recent illustrations are the
celebrations in 2014 of 50 years of Turkish immigration to Belgium and the Brussels
Grand-Place flower carpet, inspired by the famous Turkish kilims.
The festival Europalia Turkey thus wishes to contribute to the mutual understanding
between cultures, that is so important today.
