Wer Jackie Chan ist, weiß mittlerweile jedes Kind. Doch wer Jackie Chan in
Wirklichkeit ist, das wusste der Action-Held des Hongkong-Kinos und
erfolgreiche Hollywood-Star bis vor kurzem tatsächlich selber nicht.
Bislang war über sein Herkunft Folgendes bekannt: 1954 in Hongkong
geboren, als Kind einfacher Leute in ärmlichen Verhältnissen aufgewachsen.
Der Vater Koch, die Mutter Hausangestellte, keine Geschwister. Zugleich kursierten Gerüchte: Er sei nicht der leibliche Sohn seiner Eltern, er habe sogar
Brüder und Schwestern in der Volksrepublik China.
1999 lässt bei Jackie Chans Mutter die Gesundheit nach und der Vater
beschließt, seinem Sohn die ganze Familiengeschichte zu erzählen. Jackie
Chan besucht ihn in Australien, Mabel Cheungs Filmteam begleitet ihn.
Überraschendes kommt ans Tageslicht: Jackie Chan hat tatsächlich
Geschwister in der Volksrepublik, sein Nachname war ursprünglich gar nicht
Chan. Sein Vater arbeitete während der Regierung Chiang Kai-sheks als
Spion für dessen Nationalpartei und seine Mutter war alles andere als eine
einfache Hausangestellte.
Der Film folgt den Spuren dieser Familie, deren Schicksal nicht so einzigartig ist in China. Immer wieder wurden Familien auseinander gerissen: in den
politischen Wirren vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, während des Bürgerkriegs, in
der Kulturrevolution. Die Regisseurin hat mit Verwandten Jackie Chans in
Anhui gesprochen und in Hongkong mit ehemaligen Arbeitskollegen des
Vaters. Unter Einbezug historischer Dokumentaraufnahmen erzählt sie
nicht allein eine Familiengeschichte, sondern auch eine Geschichte des
modernen China.

Nowadays, every kid knows who Jackie Chan is. But just who Jackie Chan
really is, was something that this hero of Hong Kong action films and Hollywood star didn’t even know himself until just recently.
Until now, what was known about his roots was as follows: born in Hong
Kong in 1954 into a poor family. His father was a cook, his mother a house-

Cheung Yuen-ting (so Mabel Cheung’s original name) was born in Hong Kong on
17.11.1950.She studied English literature in
Hong Kong and in Bristol.From 1978-80
she worked as a television producer and
director in Hong Kong;she attended New
York University Graduate Film School from
1981-82.Since her debut as a film director
(the first in a much-acclaimed trilogy about
immigrants) she has worked regularly with
director and producer Alex Law,as was the
case on her internationally successful feature film,THE SOONG SISTERS,which
screened in the Panorama section of the
Berlinale in 1997.

célèbre trilogie sur des immigrants,elle travaille régulièrement avec le metteur en
scène et producteur Alex Law,entre autres
pour la production de THE SOONG SISTERS
(IFB Panorama 1997),qui remporte un

maid. He has no siblings. At the same time, however, rumours were rife: he
was not the biological son of his parents and he even has brothers and sisters in the People’s Republic of China.
In 1999, Jackie Chan’s mother’s health began to fail and his father decided
to tell his son the whole family story. Jackie Chan went to visit him in Australia. Mabel Cheung and her film crew went with him.
The trip unearths some surprising facts: Jackie Chan does indeed have
brothers and sisters in the People’s Republic and, his surname was not Chan
at all originally. Jackie Chan’s father worked in Chiang Kai-shek’s regime as a
spy for the Nationalist Party and his mother was anything but a simple
housemaid.
This film follows the traces of this family, whose fate is far from unique in
China. Again and again, families were torn apart by the turmoil of the Second World War, the Civil War, and, later, the Cultural Revolution. The filmmaker spoke to Jackie Chan’s relatives in Anhui and to his father’s erstwhile
colleagues in Hong Kong. Interspersed by historical documentary footage,
this film does not merely tell the story of one family, rather, it tells the story
of modern China.

Inutile de préciser qui est Jackie Chan, même les enfants le savent. Ce n’est
toutefois que très récemment que ce héros du cinéma d’action de Hongkong, vedette à Hollywood, a lui-même appris qui il était réellement.
Sur ses origines, on n’avait jusqu’à présent que les informations suivantes :
né en 1954, à Hongkong, de parents simples vivant dans la pauvreté. Père,
cuisinier, mère, employée de maison, pas de frère et sœur. En même temps,
le bruit court qu’il ne serait pas le propre fils de ses parents et qu’il aurait
même des frères et sœurs en République populaire de Chine.
En 1999, la santé de la mère de Jackie Chan est défaillante et le père décide
de raconter à son fils toute l’histoire de la famille. Jackie Chan lui rend visite
en Australie, l’équipe cinématographique de Mabel Cheung l’accompagne.
Des choses surprenantes sont alors révélées : Jackie Chan a effectivement
des frères et sœurs en Chine et son vrai nom de famille n’est pas Chan. Sous
le régime de Chiang Kai-shek, son père travaillait comme espion pour le
compte du parti national de ce dirigeant et sa mère était loin d’être une
simple employée de maison.
Le film retrouve les traces de cette famille dont le destin n’est pas un cas
unique en Chine. Déchirements et séparations furent de tout temps à
l’ordre du jour : lors des troubles politiques de la seconde guerre mondiale,
pendant la guerre civile et au cours de la révolution culturelle. La réalisatrice a parlé avec des parents de Jackie Chan, à Anhui, et avec d’anciens collègues du père, à Hongkong. En utilisant des prises de vue documentaires
historiques, elle relate non seulement une histoire de famille mais aussi celle
de la Chine contemporaine.
