he capital of both Europe and Alsace, Strasbourg is a
young, dynamic and very accessible city.
Encircled by canals and the Ill River, the city centre,
classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, contains the
main locations and monuments that give Strasbourg its
reputation: the Cathedral with its astronomical clock,
the Maison Kammerzell, the Petite France and Covered
Bridges districts, the former customs house, Palais Rohan,
and more. Medieval half-timbered houses and Renaissance
dwellings bear witness to a remarkable architectural
heritage, standing alongside more recent extensions:
the German Neustadt district, Art Nouveau architecture,
the European Institutions district, and others. Among
the not-to-be-missed museums of
the city are the Alsatian Museum
and the Museum of Modern and
Contemporary Art.

the plain bordered in the East by
the Rhine, the foothills covered
with vineyards full of famous
grape varietals and the Vosges
Mountains with its two regional

for practicing Nordic or Alpine

There is a large variety of
half-timbered houses in Alsace,
depending on the area (plain or
mountain) and the use of the
building (farming, agriculture or
wine-growing). The shapes of the
interlacing beams had symbolic
value: the diamond represented
fertility, the saltire protection and
multiplication (diamond and cross
sometimes cross over), and slanting
posts reflected the silhouette of
man. Inscriptions of sun cycles,
tulips and 5 or 6 pointed stars were
believed to protect the house from
lightning and other evils.

At the beginning of Summer, they
are reminiscent of the Summer
solstice celebrations and continue
to crackle and set the Alsatian sky
ablaze...
In Alsace, Christmas is actively
prepared for and is based on
several customs! Spread around the
world, they are still practised
today.
The Christmas markets are distant
cousins of the old fairs of Saint
Martin and Saint Nicolas. The
Christmas tree is an authentic
Alsatian tradition. Its first written
reference dates back to 1521 and
the document can be found in
the Humanist Library in Sélestat.
Every Sunday a new candle is lit
on the Advent crown, announcing
the coming of the light. From the
beginning of Advent, the famous
Wihnachtsbredle are baked,
small Christmas cakes with sweet
scents and very old traditional
shapes. There are plenty of
traditions to discover, such as
that of Hans Trapp, the Alsatian
Père Fouettard (the helper of
Saint Nicholas, who punishes bold
children), or the Christkindel, a
Christmas fairy who gave her name
to the Christkindelsmärik, the
Strasbourg Christmas market. But
in December, Alsace sets the scene
for concerts, exhibitions and other
wonderful events which revive
the original meaning of Christmas:
the “Noëlies”. As of the end of

Folklore, with its costumes and
dances, remains an integral part of
local festivals. Despite its uniform
image, the Alsatian costume
includes diverse variations.
Different colours and shapes
are codes that stand for factors
such as location, the woman’s
status, religion, and local wealth.
A century ago, there were almost
as many costumes as there were
villages!
Another symbol of Alsace is the
stork that brings new-borns to
their families in a tight bundle in
its beak.

carnivals.
Offwiller and Dieffenthal continue
the tradition of throwing burning
wooden discs (Schieweschlawe), a

the act of purification; houses are
cleaned (Oschterputz), old wood is
burnt, sins are confessed! The
Easter lamb biscuit (Lämmele) is to

fertility.
After the crops and grapes are
taken in, the harvest festivals
begin. In years gone by, the
beginning of winter saw the
beginning of “veillées”.
Several families would meet in the
Stub, the only heated room, around
the earthenware stove (Kachelofe).

Alsace has more than 1,200 historic
organs. Most of these quality
instruments are protected and
restored, particularly those built
by the Silbermann family in the
18th c. (St Thomas in Strasbourg,
Bouxwiller, Gries, Soultz, etc.),
the Stiehr-Mockers in the 19th
c. (Roppenheim, Bischwiller,
Barr, etc.), Callinet (Oltingue,
Dannemarie), Legros (Ribeauvillé)
and Aubertin (Thann). Moreover,
the art of organ workmanship is
preserved in Alsace with several
master craftsmen still working,
an Organ Centre at Marmoutier
and a centre for learning organ
workmanship in Eschau. The
countless concerts involving organs
demonstrate the vitality of this
exceptional regional heritage.

This is a service based on the idea of
a fleet of vehicles being shared. In
practice, it is short term car rental.
The car sharing company has several
locations where the vehicles are
parked. Once you register for the
service, all you have to do is reserve a
