A Positive Perspective on Business Ethics
L’éthique en affaires, une perspective positive
Do the words “Business Ethics” sound like an
oxymoron to you? Without a doubt, people are far
more skeptical about how business works these days.
Yet, by purposefully practicing ethical behavior, many
business leaders are creating a culture where good
things happen and positive relationships thrive.

« éthique » et affaires paraissent contradictoires ?
De nos jours, les gens sont très sceptiques quant au
fonctionnement des affaires. Pourtant, en pratiquant
résolûment une conduite éthique, des chefs
d’entreprises créent peu à peu une nouvelle culture
où de bonnes choses surviennent et des rapports
positifs se développent.
That’s one of the many reasons why the Rotary
Club of Lebanon, NH is hosting an Ethics & Business
Forum on Thursday October 21st from 7:30AM10:00AM at the Fireside Inn and Suites in West
Lebanon, NH. “The program is unique because our
speakers will talk about ethics and business from a
positive perspective, which is pretty unusual given the
number of corporate scandals in the news recently,”
said David Skewes, President of the Rotary Club of
Lebanon, NH.
Guest Speakers at the Forum will be Richard S.
Shreve, Adjunct Professor of Business Ethics at
Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business; James W.
Varnum, President of Mary Hitchcock Memorial
Hospital; Michael J. Gerling, COO of Tele Atlas North
America; and Richard W. Couch, Jr., CEO of
Hypertherm, Inc. The Moderator will be Len
Cadwallader, Executive Director at Vital Communities
and past president of the Hanover Rotary Club.
Rotary’s 4-way Test is at the heart of the forum
and will be discussed by the moderator in his opening
remarks. The keynote speaker will talk about how to
make a decision when faced with an ethical dilemma
as well as his five-point framework for building
character. During the panel discussion, the participants
will talk about ethics and business from their own
perspective, including how companies can encourage
high ethical values in the workplace.
Tickets, which are $13.00 each (includes
breakfast), are available for purchase through October

Ce n’est qu’une des raisons qui
incitent le club Rotary de Lebanon au New
Hampshire d’être l’hôte d’un forum sur l’Éthique et
les Affaires. Forum qui se tiendra le jeudi 21 octobre
prochain, au Fireside Inn & Suites de West
Lebanon, New Hampshire, entre 7 h 30 à 10 h. « La
programmation du forum est unique parce que les
conférenciers parleront d’éthique et d’affaires d’une
perspective positive, ce qui est proprement inusuel
par les temps qui courent avec tous ces scandales
corporatifs qui ont fait la une des médias » nous dit

Who Are the Leaders of Your Club?
From its initial concept, Rotary's
membership embraced the leadership of its community
with the understanding that this core group had the
means and the power to accomplish great things. Strong
leadership skills are vital for a healthy club, from the
more highly visible district governors, presidents, and
service chairs down to the quieter but no less important
roles of program chair and sergeant-at-arms. By
continuing to recognize the importance of leadership,
Rotary ensures another 100 years of successful,
committed service.
The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI)
was established in 1992 for the very purpose of
encouraging, nurturing, and enhancing the leadership
skills of all participating Rotarians. The leadership
course is offered in three parts (I, II, and III); each part
lasts one full day and all three are usually (but not
always) attended over three consecutive years. Each
part is broken down into sessions covering a wide variety
of topics, such as Rotary Foundation, Membership
Development and Retention, Public Relations, and The
Perfect Meeting. The courses are designed to be
informative, relevant, and, yes, even fun.
The old adage of "those that can't, teach"
is not applicable here. RLI's instructors are those who
have experienced all aspects of Rotary and have had fun
while doing it. District governors—past, present, and
future—bring their wisdom, experience, and usually a
few great anecdotes to whichever session they are
teaching. Likewise, students are encouraged to ask
questions and interact with good humour and fellowship.
During October, your club presidents
will be passing around detailed RLI pamphlets. The two
courses most geographically convenient to our district
will be held Saturday, October 16, 2004 at the Hotel Le
Dauphin, Drummondville, PQ (French Speaking), and
Saturday, October 25, 2004 at Dartmouth Hitchcock
Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. For more

So, who are the leaders of your Rotary
club? Everyone, of course!
Dès leurs débuts, les clubs Rotary
ciblèrent les leaders des communautés où ils
s’établissaient pour le recrutement de leurs membres en
sachant fort bien qu’un tel petit groupe possédait le pouvoir
d’accomplir de grandes choses. Qu’il s’agisse du poste très
visible de gouverneur de district, de président de club, de
responsable de commission, de président de comité et ceci
jusqu’au sergent d’armes même, il est essentiel pour un
club dynamique, qu’ils possèdent de solides qualités
comme chefs de file. Ainsi, c’est en continuant de
reconnaître l’importance du leadership dans le
recrutement, que le Rotary s’assure un autre siècle de
services dévoués.
L’institut du leadership Rotary fut institué
en 1992 dans le but précis d’encourager, de nourrir et de
mettre en valeur les talents de leaders de tous les rotariens
qui y participent. Ce cours en leadership est offert en trois
sessions (I, II, et III). Chaque session dure une journée
complète et les trois sessions se donnent usuellement –
mais pas toujours – sur trois années consécutives. Chaque
session est divisée en parties qui couvrent un vaste choix
de sujets, tels que la Fondation Rotary, le recrutement des
membres et comment les garder au sein des clubs, les
relations publiques et la rencontre parfaite. Les cours sont
conçus pour être informatifs, pertinents, et oui, également
amusants.
Le vieil adage de « ceux qui ne peuvent le
faire, enseignent » ne s’applique pas ici. Ce sont ceux qui
ont déjà expérimenté les multiples facettes du Rotary et qui
ont eu beaucoup de plaisir à le faire, qui se retrouvent à
transmettre leur savoir lors des sessions. Ainsi des
gouverneurs de district – anciens, présents ou futurs –
partagent leur sagesse, leur expérience et habituellement
quelques annecdotes savoureuses lors des cours qu’ils
dirigent. En outre, les étudiants sont fortement invités à
poser des questions, à interagir dans une atmosphère de
bonne humeur et de camaraderie.
Pendant le mois d’octobre, le président de
votre club vous distribuera des pamphlets au sujet de
l’Institut du Leadership Rotary. Prochainement se tiendront
les cours les plus près géographiquement de votre club.
Pour les membres francophones, la session se tiendra le
samedi 16 octobre 2004 à l’Hôtel Le Dauphin de
Drummondville au Québec, alors que pour ceux qui
préfèrent les sessions en anglais, ils auront lieu le samedi
25 octobre au Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in
Lebanon,

reasons. Although Rotarians have
offered assistance to victims after
the conflict is over, the damage to

continues. R.I. has an opportunity to
offer a significant and pro-active

device such that the device is of no
value after the conflict is over.

VOCATIONAL SERVICE
L’action professionnelle
October is Vocational Service month, perhaps
the most difficult of the areas of service to
define.
Octobre est le mois de l’action professionnelle,
probablement la voie de service la plus difficile à
définir.
Inherent in the Vocational Service ideal are:
1. Adherence to, and promotion of, the highest
ethical standards in all occupations, including
loyalty to employers, employees, and
associates, and fair treatment of those with
whom one has business or professional
relations;
2. The recognition of the worthiness to society
of all useful occupations; and
3. The contribution of one’s vocational talents
to the problems and needs of society.
Vocational Service is the responsibility of both a
Rotary Club and its members. The role of the
club is to develop projects that help members
contribute their vocational talents. The role of
members is to conduct their professional lives in
accordance with Rotary principles and to share
in projects which the club has developed.
Some aspects of Vocational Service are: career
development, vocation at work, vocational
awareness, vocational awards, and Rotary
Volunteers.
L’action professionnelle signifie encouragement et
maintien des idéaux d’entraide dans l’exercice de
toute profession. Elle s’articule autour des principes
suivants :
1. Adhérer et encourager un degré très élevé
d’éthique professionnelle, notamment la
fidélité envers employeurs, employés et
associés et le juste traitement de tous ceux
avec qui l’on entretient des relations
commerciales ou professionnelles ;
2. Reconnaître la valeur sociale de toute
profession ;
3. Contribuer,
par
sa
compétence
professionnelle, à résoudre les problèmes et
à répondre aux besoins de la société.
L’action professionnelle incombe à la fois au club
Rotary et à ses membres. Le rôle du club consiste à
réaliser et à développer des projets permettant aux
membres
d’utiliser
leurs
compétences
professionnelles. Il appartient aussi à ces derniers
de se comporter et d’exercer leur profession
conformément aux principes du Rotary, ainsi que de
participer aux projets que le club élabore.

Dear District Governor,
Beginning this October, a powerful new documentary
"The Last Child: The Global Race to End Polio" will
begin airing on public television stations across the
United States. This one-hour program captures the
dramatic story of the largest public health initiative in
history - the global effort to end polio by 2005.
Just as volunteers drive the global effort to end polio,
television viewers drive public television stations'
program selection process. In certain markets, public
television station programmers have not yet selected,
or have declined to select, The Last Child, which is
being offered to them free of charge through
American Public Television (APT) Exchange, the
U.S. distributor of the program.
A sample letter to stations and a list of the public
television stations that have either committed to air
The Last Child or are still undecided can be

Cher Gouverneur de District,
Le touchant documentaire “The Last Child – The
Global Race to End Polio” (Le dernier enfant – la
course mondiale pour éradiquer la polio) sera

émission d’une heure décrit l’histoire dramatique de
la plus grande initiative en santé publique dans
l’histoire – celle de l’effort international pour
éradiquer la polio du globe d’ici 2005.
Tout comme des bénévoles qui dirigent cette quête
d’éliminer la polio, ce sont les auditeurs qui dictent
aux stations publiques la sélection des
programmes qu’ils peuvent regarder. Dans
plusieurs marchés, ce choix n’a pas encore été
effectué où ils ont décliné de choisir “The Last
Child” qui leur est offert gratuitement via l’American
