Maron Bouillie part en balade avec son panier à images,
apprivoise les brins d’herbes et cueille les courants d’air.
De retour à l’atelier, Maron Bouillie révèle les instants
fragiles, arrose les idées fraîches, pour fabriquer des objets
qui rendent plaisant les tâches ménagères.
Au fil des saisons, Maron Bouillie plante ses collections.
Haricots ou radis, chacun leur caractère… Selon l’air du
temps, les objets poussent différemment.
Un peu de mimétisme, une poignée de détournement,
Maron Bouillie sème ses graines de poésie.
Maron Bouillie goes off for a walk to fill her basket
with images, snapping wavy blades of grass and soft wisps
of air. Back in her studio, she exposes those delicate
moments, sprinkles her ideas to keep them fresh and
creates tools to make household chores pleasurable. As
seasons go by, Maron plants her collections… beans or
radishes, each with their specific nature. According to the
times and the weather, things will grow in different ways.
Thus, with a touch of mimesis here, a spot of diversion
there, Maron Bouillie sows the seeds of poetry.

At Granny ’s
Ch e z mémé
At Granny’s everything is kind of faded, outmoded, oldish,
kitsch. But, mind you, it’s terribly nice, full of great finds, of treasures
of the past. At Granny’s nothing ever gets thrown away. Objects are
gnawed, nibbled at, whittled down, worn out.
Chez mémé, c’est vieillot, c’est passé, c’est dépassé, c’est
kitsch. Mais c’est chouette, il y a plein de découvertes, de trésors
d’un autre temps. Chez mémé rien n’est jeté, les objets sont rongés,
rognés, grignotés, usés jusqu’au bout.
In Granny’s kitchen I sat down once and made an inventory :
Something long, something round – a narrative pattern, a repetitive
one – boxes of recipes and recipes for success. Here’s my index :
Wood is childhood, metal is capital, china is a diva, enamel is gentle,
plastic is fantastic, glass is first class. Aprons, dish towels and oven
gloves are nicely put away in Granny’s cupboard.
Dans la cuisine de mémé, je me suis installée le temps d’un inventaire : objet long - objet rond, motif narratif - motif répétitif, recettes
de cuisine - recettes de classement. Voilà ma table des matières :
Le bois c’était autrefois, le métal c’est capital, la porcelaine par centaine, l’émail aïe aïe aïe, le plastique c’est fantastique, le verre vert,
blanc mais surtout transparent.Tabliers, torchons, maniques et gants
sont bien rangés dans l’armoire de mémé.
Later, Huguette, Léonie, Renée, Séraphine, Odette, Fernande
and I had supper on Granny’s odd table. A dinner of checks and p
olka dots, fruits and flowers, freshness, savours and colours.

Puis sur la table dépareillée de mémé, avec Huguette, Léonie,
Renée, Séraphine, Odette et Fernande, nous avons soupé de pois et
de carreaux, de fruits et de fleurs, de fraîcheur et de couleur.

It’s the annual flea market, the clearance and bric-à-brac sale
of Nowheresville. There are crates full of crockery, rows of books,
heaps of clothes, endless lines of knick-knacks, boxes overflowing
with toys… stalls as far as the eye can see… At Memory Fair one can
rub shoulders with grime and beauty, items unique or identical, poesy
and nostalgia, scrap merchants and hagglers, street vendors and onlookers… “ Jumble ” meets “ Topsy-turvy ”, “ In days of yore ” is next
to « In olden times ”, “ Fate ” has an appointment with “ Opportunity
”, “ Yesterday ” meets up again with “ Recently ”. People bargain, talk
about the weather, pass time, remember things past, they come and
go, chat and babble, ask for news, are surprised, they rummage and
search about, find stuff and indulge themselves.
In this vast theater of objects, the “ puppets ” are waiting for the passer-by who will give them a new role, a new life.
C’est les puces, la brocante annuelle, le vide-grenier de Trifouillis-les-casquettes, c’est le grand déballage. Il y a des caisses de
vaisselle, des rangs de livres, des tas de vêtements, des alignements
de bibelots, des cartons de jouets … des étalages à perte de vue
… Il y a la saleté et la beauté, l’unique et l’identique, la poésie et la
nostalgie, la mémoire et la foire, les ferrailleurs et les marchandeurs,
les camelots et les badauds … “ Pêle-mêle ” rencontre “ Sans dessus
dessous ”, “ Jadis ” côtoie “ Autrefois ” , “ Hasard ” a rendez-vous
avec “ Occasion ”, “ Hier ” retrouve “ Naguère ”. On marchande, on
parle de la pluie et du beau temps, on fait passer le temps, on se souvient, on revient, on va et vient, on discute, on papote, on demande
des nouvelles, on est surpris, on fouille, on cherche, on trouve, on se
fait plaisir.
Dans ce grand théâtre d’objets, les “ marionnettes ” attendent qu’un
promeneur leur donne un nouveau rôle, leur offre une nouvelle vie.
My “ containers ”, bags, boxes, pots and tidies, are very
much like these moments of unusual gathering. Use them to put
away your finds, to go to the market, to pile up what you cannot possibly organize. Put them somewhere in your house, anywhere …

As cool as an alley cat, I set off to explore the remnants of a
city of merchants. I am led by the light melody that pervades these
surroundings so full of reminiscence. These good old stores have travelled through time without realizing it: nice little corner shops, unchanged, familiar to all in the neighbourhood…
A light or perhaps a fragrance beckons me. I stop. It is a café… I push
the door open, tinkle-tinkle… a sweet chime greets me. Inside, it is
warm and cosy, and I sit down for a moment in this typical Parisian
locale.
Forever a gleaner, I pursue my visit of this living museum, in
search of a sign from the past, of a long-forgotten detail. Here and
there I smile at ancient inscriptions such as “ Eau et gaz à tous les
étages ” (running water and domestic gas on every floor). These poetic anachronisms scattered around the city survive by hiding within our
day and age.
In this street show, bristling with all sorts of characters against
a backdrop conceived by Haussmann, one lives one’s life. Grimacing
gargoyles, guardian angels from the past, snigger in the face of inquisitive passers-by. Suspended between sky and earth, brick chimneys
line up, similar to tall fellows, some wearing pointed hats, others smoking ; all have recently been given antennas to stay connected…
Inspired by my wanderings, my objects are meant for strollers
of times begone.

À la manière d’un chat de gouttière, je pars à la découverte
des vestiges d’une ville de marchands. Je me laisse guider par cette
petite chanson qui traverse tous ces lieux remplis de souvenirs. Ces
anciennes boutiques qui ont traversé le temps sans le savoir. Celles
qui sont restées dans leur jus, celles du coin, bien connues du quartier… Une lumière, une odeur m’interpelle, je m’arrête, le café … je
pousse la porte, gling glong … les clochettes m’accueillent. Il fait bon,
il fait chaud, je m’installe un instant dans ce lieu typique.
En glaneuse, je continue ma visite de ce musée vivant à la
recherche d’une trace du passé, d’un détail de vie oublié. Ici et là des
vieilles lettres, des “ Eau et gaz à tous les étages ”… Ces anachronismes poétiques parsemés aux quatre coins de la capitale, résistent
en se cachant dans notre époque.
Dans ce théâtre de rues aux décors Haussmanniens truffés de
personnages, chacun mène sa vie. Anges-gardiens, les gargouilles
de pierre grimacent et ricanent au nez des passants curieux. Entre
terre et ciel, les bonshommes-cheminées en brique sont alignés, certains ont mis un chapeau pointu, d’autres fument. Récemment, on leur
a mis des antennes pour qu’ils restent branchés…
À l’image de ces promenades, mes objets sont pour les flâneurs d’un autre temps.

Like a Butterfly, I took a winding path from the morning dew to the
moonlit night
Like a Grasshopper, I turned a somersault in Sault
Like a Spider, I went up the Mont Ventoux
Like an Ant, I clambered up cliffs of ochre
Like a Dragonfly, I plunged my feet into a stream, dipped my nose in
the water.
Like a Bee, I gathered savours
Like a Bumblebee, I picked flavours
Like a Cicada, I sang of colours
Like a Ladybug, I filled my cumbersome knapsack with cucumbers,
peas, artichokes, half-open shutters, a stroke of sky, a touch of sun,
a sleeping cat, linens hung out on a line, a heap of baskets, a set of
soaps, bags of spices, a row of pencils, a pile of sheets, a game of
petanque, a few hand-painted santons, a moment’s silence, the shadow of an olive tree…
Comme un Papillon, j’ai fait mille tours et détours, de la rosée du
matin au clair de lune.
Comme une Sauterelle, j’ai sauté à Sault.
Comme une Araignée, j’ai grimpé au Mont Ventoux.
Comme une Fourmi, j’ai escaladé les falaises d’Ocres.
Comme une Libellule, j’ai trempé mes pieds dans un ruisseau, mis
mon nez dans l’eau.
Comme une Abeille, j’ai butiné les senteurs.
Comme un Bourdon, j’ai ramassé les saveurs.
Comme une Cigale, j’ai chanté les couleurs.
Comme une Coccinelle, j’ai rempli mon sac à dos de poids.
But in my bag all my walks got mixed up. So I went in the bathroom
and scattered everything on the floor. I poured the colours into bottles
lined up on the shelf. I put away the flavours in cotton cases. I spread
the savours on terry towels. I hung out the hand towels to dry at the
window. I cut out a carpet from a stone path. I sewed linen baskets
using circles and stripes and hid the old villages behind stone walls.

De petits pois, d’artichauts du pays, de volets entrouverts, d’une touche
de ciel, d’une note de soleil, d’un chat qui dore, de linge qui sèche,
d’un tas de paniers, d’une série de savons, de sacs d’épices, d’une
rangée de crayons, d’une pile de draps, d’une partie de pétanque,
de santons peints à la main, d’un instant silencieux, de l’ombre d’un
olivier, …
Dans ma besace, toutes mes promenades étaient mélangées. Alors,
j’ai tout renversé sur le sol de la salle de bains. Puis, j’ai aligné les couleurs dans des flacons sur l‘étagère. J’ai rangé les saveurs dans des
coffrets en coton. J’ai étalé les senteurs sur des serviettes éponge. À
la fenêtre, j’ai mis les essuie-mains à sécher. J’ai taillé un tapis dans
un chemin de pierres. J’ai cousu des sacs à linge avec les ronds et
les rayures. J’ai caché les vieux villages derrière des murs de pierres.

Str olling arou n d t h e m a r k e t
On a sunny morning, being the Parisienne imp that I am, I
enjoy a little stroll around the market with my camera slung over my
shoulder. Off I go through the rush, the crush and the shopping-trolley gridlocks, with “ Elle est belle ma salade ! ” or “ 3 pour 2 euros ! ”
ringing through my ears. Fancy that ! Madame Champignon is selling
oyster mushrooms this morning! There’s always a queue in front of the
fishmonger’s blue display. “ Bonjour ma petite dame, what will it be for
you ? Extra-special peas ? New potatoes for a jardinière ? ” Yummy…
what a sweet scent… it’s basil! And look at all those colourful goods
patiently waiting their turn to be relished…
I’ve made up my mind, the vegetables are on, today : come on,
leeks, radishes, carrots, turnips, onions and beetroots, say “Cheese”
! Each of you will have its own carrier to make a hit at the greengrocer’s. Latest stars of the market, the shopping bags are the size of our
favourite veggies and bear their image. Most handy for carrying leeks,
and so stylish when trailing radishes around. The stallholder is not
the sole actor in the market : with Maron Bouillie, the shopping trolley
resembles a caravan. The flower man and the fruit-and-vegetable lad
race for fun and come upon their stall, identical or almost, standing
before them in print.

Un p ’tit tour au marché
Par un matin ensoleillé, en lutine parisienne, l’appareil photo
en bandoulière, je pars faire un p’tit tour au marché. C’est parti pour la
bousculade, les embouteillages de paniers roulants, les “ Allez-y dans
la salade ! ” ou les “ 3 pour 2 euros ce matin ! ”... Tiens ! Mme Champignon vend des pleurotes aujourd’hui. C’est toujours la queue chez
le poissonnier bleu… “B’jour, ma p’tite dame, qu’est-ce que j’vous
sers ? des p’tits pois extras ? Des pommes de terre nouvelles, pour
la jardinière ? ” Hum… Cette odeur… Le basilic et ces tas de couleurs
alignées qui attendent patiemment leur tour pour être mangés...
C’est décidé, les légumes vont y passer, poireaux, radis, carottes, navets, oignons, betteraves, souriez ! À chaque légume son
sac pour faire fureur chez le maraîcher. Nouvelles stars du marché,
les sacs à courses sont au format et à l’image de nos légumes favoris,
pratiques pour porter les poireaux et des plus chics pour balader ses
radis. L’acteur du marché n’est pas seulement le marchand. À la mode
Maron Bouillie, le panier roulant prend des airs de roulotte. L’homme
fleuriste et l’enfant épicier s’amusent à faire la course, et puis c’est la
rencontre. Le stand que l’on reconnaît, ou presque, imprimé là devant
nous.

At this time of year, fruits and vegetables occupy the kitchen.
Every variety is on parade.
Cette saison, les légumes s’invitent à la cuisine. Chaque genre
fait son défilé.
In the Brassicaceae Family, the Raphanus sativus (widely
known as Radishes) are named “Champion”, “Cherry Belle”, “Easter
Egg” or “Plum Purple”. They are summer or winter radishes, pink,
white or black, small and round or big and long, always there whenever the gardener needs them.
Dans la famille des Brassicacées les Raphanus sativus (connus
sous le nom de Radis) sont “Cerise” ou “National”, “Green Meat” ou
“Red Meat” tantôt d’hiver, tantôt d’été, parfois “de 18 jours”, rose,
blanc ou noir, petit rond ou gros long, toujours présents à l’appel du
jardinier.
In the Solanaceae family, Solanum Melongea L. (usually called
Eggplants), it’s a real carnival ! “Black Bell” is next to “Louisiana Long
Green”, which took along “Rosa Bianca”. Close by, “Ghostbuster” tells
her feats to “Little Fingers”.

In the Rosaceae Family, the Malus Pumila (in other words
Apples) are celebrating. “Pink Lady” opens the dancing with “King
Cole”, “Captain Kidd” waltzes with “Belle de Boscop”, “Jazz” invites
“SweeTango”. There’s no apple of discord with Pendragon.
Life will be a bowl of cherries if you stay cool as a cucumber
and never let anyone drive you banana.
