Le parc abriterait notamment des structures pour l’entraînement extérieur. « Ce sera un parc multigénérationnel où les jeunes, les adultes et les personnes retraitées actives pourront bénéficier, d’une façon ou d’une autre, des éléments inclus », a affirmé Denis Simard, membre du comité du parc Des Champs. L’espace serait également entouré d’une piste asphaltée pour la marche, la course ou le patin. L’objectif manifeste est de promouvoir la santé et le bien-être de la communauté. Le comité propose du même coup un échéancier d’un an, ce qui a fait sourciller quelque peu certains conseillers. « C’est un beau plan, mais, d’après moi, c’est un peu poussé. Il faudrait songer à le réaliser par étapes. C’est certain que la municipalité ne peut pas se permettre ça en un an », a commenté le conseiller Bernard Payer. De son côté, la conseillère Diane Choinière a suggéré de telles installations à l’extérieur de la zone urbaine. « Rockland a déjà un centre sportif de disponible. Ne serait-il pas mieux d’installer ce genre de structure dans des villages qui sont éloignés? », a-t-elle questionné. Pour sa part, le maire Marcel Guibord a mentionné que la construction du parc dépendra des sommes disponibles. « Des parcs, on en a besoin, il s’agit de trouver les fonds pour être capable de les bâtir et de les finir. Il ne faut pas oublier qu’il n’y a pas seulement ce parc, il y en a plusieurs ». Other politicians, he observed, might be good managers but what they say or do may not always be part of the “Tim Horton table talk” the morning after they make an announcement. “People have a craving for strong leadership,” Boudria said. “We don’t have that now.” He also dismisses the claims of some pundits that Trudeau’s name will prove a political handicap. “How could it?” he said, laughing. “He’s a brilliant young man.” Continuing on about the strength of the Trudeau name, Boudria recalled an interview he had with a Québecois journalist soon after Trudeau’s leadership bid announcement. The reporter questioned whether or not being Pierre Trudeau’s son might not hurt both the Liberal party’s and Justin Trudeau’s chances of voter support in Québec. Boudria cited the last federal election campaign results for Prime Minister Trudeau. “In Québec his (Justin’s) father took 74 of 75 seats,” Boudria said, adding this was during a time when the separatist movement was still strong in the province’s political scene. “Others tried to demonize him in that last election but it didn’t work.” In the current leadership campaign Trudeau faces competition from at least half a dozen other challengers, including Dr. Marc Garneau, Canada’s most famous astronaut. The September 22 weekend fishing trip was a combination brainstorming session and social gathering for the 15 MPs and other senior government officials who make up the special issue caucus. During a phone interview Lemieux estimated that between 40 to 50 people took part in the event, including the government representatives, support staff, local guides and others. “The ‘outdoor’ caucus is for MPs who want to be focused on the outdoors and its issues,” said Lemieux, Conservative MP for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell., adding that the caucus is an all-party group, including MPs from both sides of the House of Commons, such as the NDP’s Dennis Bevington. “These (all-party) caucuses are very useful for focusing on areas of interest and developing working relationships between MPs,” Lemieux said. “I’ve been to countries where the MPs don’t do this kind of thing.” The main focus for the weekend, Lemieux noted, was a relaxed get-together for the caucus members. Caucus members may have shared informal observations about outdoor issues and concerns while waiting for strikes on their lines and then engaging in more formal discussions later when they returned to Parliament Hill for their regular office hours. “This was very much an (amiable) event,” he said. “It was about fishing, about enjoying the outdoors, and getting to know each other.” Lemieux heard reports that some caucus members hauled in a few of the local bass, perch and other sports fish before leaving the river and gathering at the RiverRock Inn for a late afternoon/early evening barbecue. While the MP issued the invitation for the “outdoor” caucus to enjoy a Rockland fishing experience, he wasn’t able to share in the fun, though he was on hand to welcome everyone back to the dock. “I was not able to go fishing with them,” Lemieux said, with a chuckle. “I had other riding engagements and business to attend to.” The MP hopes to see the “outdoor” caucus and other all-party focus groups make their way to Rockland and other parts of the riding again in future. Meanwhile he is stuck with a fish story about the ones he never even got a chance to let get away. En 1987, le ministère de la Consommation et du Commerce de l’Ontario accorde une charte qui constituera le Centre de Jour Séraphin-Marion d’Orléans en association. L’idée avait toutefois été apportée trois années auparavant au moment où le centre culture du MIFO allait devenir réalité. Bien qu’il allait plaire aux plus petits et aux adultes, le centre du MIFO ne répondait pas nécessairement aux besoins d’une portion grandissante de la population : les aînés. Une demande est donc faite au programme fédéral Nouveaux Horizons à l’époque afin de construire un centre qui serait nommé en hommage à Séraphin Marion, grand historien franco-ontarien décédé en 1983. Après quelques années d’absence, le spectacle Célébration est de retour. Il s’agit d’une soirée qui rend hommage aux gens qui combattent le cancer. Cette année, il s’agit d’une édition spéciale puisque l’on procédera également au lancement du livre Inspirations. Il s’agit d’une collection de photos de soutiengorge transformé en œuvre d’art. Le livre regroupe 22 artistes et 22 mannequins vêtus des soutiens-gorges uniques. Il s’agit de deux initiatives lancées par Lyette Serrurier et Karen Gatien appuyées de Denise Lorrain et Tanya Gatien. À compter de 18 h, les gens seront accueillis au gymnase de l’École secondaire L’Escale de Rockland pour un vins et fromages où le livre sera dévoilé. Par la suite, de 20 h à 21 h 30, un spectacle de musique et de danse sera présenté à la Salle optimiste. Cela inclut entre autres un défilé de mannequins portant les soutiens-gorges en compagnie des artistes. Tous les profits de la soirée et tous les profits du livre iront à la Fondation du cancer de la région d’Ottawa pour appuyer le centre Maplesoft, qui est le premier centre de survie du cancer au Canada. « La raison pour laquelle on a choisi le centre Maplesoft, c’est que Karen et moi on a une attitude très positive puis on veut profiter de la vie, on veut célébrer et le centre Maplesoft c’est ce qu’il fait. Il appuie les gens et les aidants naturels à passer à travers les traitements et les moments difficiles », a souligné Lyette Serrurier, membre du comité organisateur. Depuis 2002, plus de 60 000 dollars ont été amassés en soutien d’organismes du cancer. Cette année, le comité souhaite récolter plus de 35 000 dollars. Pas moins de 70 bénévoles ont déployé tous les efforts pour l’élaboration du livre et l’organisation de la soirée. Les traitements ont été longs, mais un an plus tard elle a pu célébrer la fin de ses traitements avec sa famille. Après son combat, son mari et ses enfants l’ont encouragée à produire un spectacle musical pour prélever des fonds. En 2002, le spectacle Célébration est né. Pour sa part, Lyette Serrurier vit avec un cancer inflammatoire du sein. Malgré cela, elle éprouve un grand désir de vivre positivement. En plus de combattre la maladie, elle souhaite encourager les femmes qui livrent ce combat et leurs proches et célébrer la vie en famille, avec ses amis et sa communauté. Surtout qu’avec la température, on peut se considérer chanceux », affirme l’organisateur et co-propirétaire de la Binerie de Plantagenet, Alain Lapensée, en annonçant que le succès est tant et si bien au rendez-vous que l’événement se tiendra sur deux jours pour la 3e édition. The latest public consultation on what will become of the building saw more than 100 people crowd into council chambers at city hall in Rockland. Included among them were representatives for several sports groups, the local air cadets unit, and former MPP Jean-Marc Lalonde himself. The JML Arena is no longer the site for hockey or other ice-related indoor sports since the opening of the new Rockland Arena, with its twin ice sheets, as part of the Canadian International Hockey Academy development in the industrial park along County Road 17. The old arena has become the home and parade ground for the 832 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets and they would like to continue using the facility for their weekly gatherings. It has also seen use for various special commercial trade shows and other stand-alone events. The Ottawa DerbyDolls roller derby organization has also begun making use of the arena for practices and as a site for their home matches and they also would like to continue doing so. The Rockland United Soccer Club (RUSC) has presented a proposal for laying artificial turf in the arena so that it can be used for indoor soccer matches and other sports events. The RUSC proposal would involve a partnership between the club, the city, and other community groups for management of the facility.
