WORLD ROSE CONVENTION Lyon, 3-9 June 2015 LYON WELCOMES THE WORLD ROSE CONVENTION DOSSIER DE CANDIDATURE _ BID DOCUMENT WELCOME TO LYON ! Great cities do not emerge by chance. It is factors of location, climate, geography, history and the men and women of the region that determine their existence. Lyon is the result of this outstanding combination. Its 2000-year history testifies to Lyon’s ability to build its wealth and its success without ostentation but not without wisdom and clearsightedness. A city of trade, Lyon was the first city to hold large traders’ markets. A city of communications, Lyon created a major access network that opened onto Europe and the rest of the world to encourage exchanges and influence between people, goods and ideas. A city of finance, Lyon was innovative in exchanging currencies and setting up the first banking system in France. Here, the World Rose Convention, which is to be held in Lyon in 2015, will find an ideal host, the cradle of a long tradition of welcome and of 2,000 years of contact with Europe and the world. Lyon is the first French city to participate in this competition and to receive an award THE BANKS OF THE RIVER RHONE Since the refurbishing of the Rhône river banks beautiful new perspectives of the city have been revealed to walkers over a 5 kilometer stretch of modern and delightful walkways. According to Lyonnais Mayor Gerard Collomb, these profound modifications of the Rhône river banks give the city “a new philosophy and a peaceful family atmosphere”. The cars and car parking spaces that once filled these banks have been replaced by pedestrians roller skaters and cyclers. The left bank refurbishment is the first of a series of projects promoting green transport modes. Indeed, the goal is to supply real alternatives to motorized travel by developing cycle paths and pedestrian walkways. The car parking spaces that were lost with the creation of these new pedestrian banks will be partly replaced by underground car parks with a capacity of over 1100 spaces. LYON TOURISME & CONGRES WORLD ROSE CONVENTION - LYON 7 WELCOME TO LYON LYON CONFLUENCE Making the Lyon Confluence area a reference in energy efficiency The Lyon Confluence project has been exclusively designed with sustainable development in mind. 23% of council housing High quality environmental guidelines for all buildings and public areas Developments of green transport modes Rehabilitation of polluted soil ONLY LYON / • • • • In 2004, the Lyon Confluence project qualified to be part of the European Union Concerto program which encourages investments in favor of energy conservation in housing and office constructions. Funds totaling 3.5 million € were awarded by the European Union to the project in order to cover extra costs brought by energy saving and sustainability initiatives: 40% cuts in energy needs compared to today’s standards thanks to both the bioclimatic design of the buildings and to insulation and ventilation. Renewable sources of energy account for 80% of needs, the most efficient being biomass and solar energy technologies. SAVOIR-FAIRE : LYON : “IN THE HEART OF THE ROSE" For all rose amateurs, Lyon and its region are considered as the cradle of the “modern“ rose, as rose-growers from Lyon were largely responsible for developing our favourite flower. The list of roses associated with Lyon is particularly long, both for modern and ancient varieties. Lyon rose-growers in the 19th century During the 1840-1850's, BELUZE, DUCHER, GUILLOT, LACHARME, and NERARD were some of the names at the start of the history of the Lyon rose. In 1867, Jean-Baptiste GUILLOT son, created ‘LA FRANCE’, the first hybrid tea rose, fruit of a well thought-out hybridization. His father, around 1850, had invented shield budding on dog rose root stock, a process still used to this day. Around 1900, PERNET-DUCHER, another Lyonnais, created ‘SOLEIL D’OR’, the first hybrid tea rose in yellow tones. Other names to be added to these famous rose growers were BERNAIX, BONNAIRE, DUBREUIL, Widow DUCHER, LIABAUD, SCHWARTZ, who with their creations known throughout the world, helped to make Lyon the world capital of the Rose during the 1870/1914 period. The years 1935 to 1955 This period was marked by COMBE, DUBREUIL and above all Charles MALLERIN whose creations Madame P.S. DUPONT and VIRGO toured the world and are still grown today. Currently Lyon plant breeders are still recognized around the world and CROIX, DORIEUX, DUCHER, GAUJARD, GUILLOT, LAPERRIERE, MEILLAND, ORARD, REUTER, regularly received prizes in International Competitions. The creations are loved the world over. Professionals consider that the rose which most marked the 20th century was ‘PEACE’, created by Francis MEILLAND. It was so named to commemorate the end of World War II in 1945. During the OSAKA Convention, another Meilland rose, ‘PIERRE de RONSARD’ was admitted by the WFRS into its “Hall of Fame“ Every year, 2,000,000 rose plants are produced in the Lyon region. Rose Societies in Lyon Two societies for professionals and amateurs work together to promote the rose in France. The SOCIETE FRANCAISE des ROSES Founded in 1896. Its creation in Lyon confirms the region's importance in breeding and producing roses. Every year, it organizes the Concours International de Roses Nouvelles de Lyon, initiated and jointly organizes the Biennale de la Rose Parfumée de Nantes, and cofounded and organizes Altera Rosa, an event around the rose, visited each year by 25,000 amateurs in the famous setting of the Palais des Papes in Avignon. Members of the society participate on the juries of European competitions. Every year, it publishes the glossy review “LES AMIS DES ROSES“. LYON TOURISME & CONGRES WORLD ROSE CONVENTION - LYON 11 ONLY LYON / SAVOIR FAIRE ROSES ANCIENNES EN FRANCE Founded in 1995, also in Lyon, it brings together amateurs and professionals in ancient roses and organizes many exhibitions and events where ancient roses are in the spotlight. The society is currently working on creating painted walls relating the history of the rose in Lyon. Rose Gardens in Lyon There are three in the Parc de la Tête d’Or the Grande Roseraie Internationale, 30,000 plants in 350 varieties, in 40,000 m² in a landscape setting, AWARD of the WFRS. the Botanical Garden Rose Garden, 360 varieties, mostly ancient and botanic, in 16,000 m² the Roseraie du Concours International, the roses are judged for 2 years, 3 for shrubs and climbers. Many public and private gardens including the Rose garden in the Parc des Hauteurs and the Rose garden in the BONNE MAISON created by Odile Masquelier, known to amateurs of ancient roses the world over. « La France » « Peace » « Soleil d’Or » LYON Green City The town has just received an award from the PNUE and IFPRA for the quality of its parks and gardens and its contribution to sustainable development. With its 95 hectares, the Parc de la Tête d’Or is a landscaped park which, as well as 3 rose gardens has a Zoological Garden, a botanical garden and recently, an African Plain, where free-roaming animals can be admired. Very recently, the city's ecological reputation has been boosted by the arrangement of a “Green Way” along the banks of the river Rhone.
