Sujet de thèse pour l’ED D42 – English version Research unit Fields Method Topic Subject Larefi Financial macro-economics Macro, econometric and theoretical approach Emerging countries’ currencies Essays on Internationalization of emerging market currencies What are the factors that determine the emerging countries’ currencies internationalization? An international currency performs externally some of the functions of money as a medium of exchange (a vehicle currency; an intervention currency), unit of account (an invoicing currency; a nominal anchor) and store of value (a reserve currency). The US dollar is the international currency; nevertheless a lot of articles studied the role of the pound sterling, the yen or the euro as competitor to the dollar. In the present essays, the objective is to focus, proportionally speaking, on the willingness of some emerging countries to internationalize the national currency. Up to now, several articles have been conducted on the Yuan and its regional influence, its role on FX market and in the composition of international reserves. Have other emerging countries’ currencies been internationalized since 2000s (Brazil, South Korea, Mexico)? What are the ways to become internationalized Skills Supervisor Contact Key words References (international reserve; composition of public debt; role of local bond market; role of the trade and of an invoice currency…)? Are there new drivers (emerging countries’ banks operating abroad in their national currency; investment strategies of Sovereign Wealth Funds…)? What general overview can be given of the emerging countries’ currencies internationalization making (importance; a step by step approach; a regional approach; necessary and/or sufficient conditions…)? … The internationalization making general overview being given, the PhD student may identify, among these questions, some issues for further empirical or theoretical work.
