SYNOPSIS
Tattoo artists Jef and Kostek know that there is more to tattooing than letting needles push ink through a maze
of skin-deep furrows.
As we follow them on their journeys, we partake in the intimacy of tattoo sessions that involve listening time,
exchanges and emotions.
Jef and Kostek bridge the gap between art life and daily life; they revisit the relationship to the Other, to the
body, and between bodies.
The outcome is a motley fresco, heralded across the world from one skin to the next, conveying dreams and
freedom.
The film trails a nomadic work of art, grafted on human canvas―a touchingly human encounter.
Shot in Brussels, Berlin, Paris, Lyon, Strasbourg, Athens, Prague, Oslo, Bergen, Stockholm…
Director’s word
I’d never been attracted by tattooing, and by and
large body modifications in general had always felt
rather repulsive to me. My only connexion to the
world of tattoos was the number tattooed on my
father’s forearm, which reminded him, his family
and anyone setting eyes on it of the worst, most
horrifying period of 20th century history.
However, during a summer courses in Berlin three
years ago, as warm weather got everyone to uncover
themselves, me and my friend fell in love with the
tattoos covering people’s shoulders, arms, calves,
necks and backs; large and small, men and women,
all sorts of people. We’d never noticed it in Brussels
or Paris, where tattoos were a rarity. In Berlin, we
were swept off our feet, and a few months later we
had made our decision – without really knowing
why. Then came the question: what kind of tattoo
should we get? They’re for life…
I didn’t want a message, or any sign or symbol.
Going through a good number of tattoo magazines, I
realized that there was very little in there that I liked,
and nothing that would want on my skin.
Then one day I heard about Yann Black and the
Boucherie Moderne. Their concept is to draw unique
tattoos, each designed as an individual artwork.
After an internet tour of Kostek and Jef’s work,
uncertain of which I liked best, I contacted the
Boucherie Moderne. Kostek suggested that I could
get two tattoos, a collaboration between himself and
Jef. I realized that they’re close friends, with their
own methods and styles but with an artistic
connection that enticed me.
I spent two wonderful days with them while getting
myself tattooed, and I got a glimpse of two
extraordinary men, both personally and artistically.
I felt myself forming a connection with them, an
exchange; getting a tattoo from Kostek and Jef
involves a lot more than letting their needles push
ink through one’s skin.
I’ll keep it short, but I realized during Kostek’s
session that my tattoo was the first true act of
freedom I allowed myself with my own body.
Freedom to change its appearance, to create a new
connexion between me and others.
In Jef, I discovered a very contradictory character,
earnest and with a kind of ethical purity that reacts
poorly to any divergence from the most respectful
and honest of human relationships. Anything that
pushes the boundaries (in his opinion) will rouse his
anger and launch him in a political theory tirade on
modern society. Despite this, he’s very endearing,
with his slang-peppered speech which hints at his
background. During Jef’s session, I learned a bit
about his past, Kostek’s past, and about Fred le
Maton, a sort of Tournaisian Begbie seemingly out
of a psychological thriller full of twists.
So many things happened in those two days of
tattooing, I was so amazed by the depth of Jef and
Kostek, and I was so delighted to be tattooed that I
wanted to learn more about their universe. I wanted
to share my discoveries, their unique approach in the
world of tattoos, and as citizens in the public sphere.
In this movie, as we follow Jef and Kostek, I want to
show the genesis of artworks that will spread
throughout the world, alter bodies and the
relationships between them, and, like all art or
culture, enhance human consciousness.
My drive to make this film is also related to my
pathway through life. It is a continuation of my life
experience, as I explore an environment to which I
belong – somewhat – but which remains a mystery
to unravel. By making this film, I also want to share
this rather spiritual encounter, as I can sense the
appeal, wariness, fascination, fears and desires…
