Gerrit Rietveld, Red and Blue Chair, 1953, © Galerie Vivid, Rotterdam
In the exhibition a chair dating from 1953 and a reproduction are both shown. Placing the two directly together
raises questions about what constitutes an original and what makes it valuable.
03
Tejo Remy, Chest of Drawers, Droog, 1991, © Gerard van Hees
Dutch designer Tejo Remy collected old drawers, gave each of them a new frame, and in 1991 built the first
“Chest of Drawers” out of them. An example of how to take the vintage idea further.

Marcel Breuer, Metal Band Chair, model 1082, 1935, © Embru-Werke
This chair was found by its present owner in a chicken coop and is the most expensive object in the exhibition .

Jan Kath, Serapi Queensbury Sky, carpet from the series Erased Heritage, one-off, 2013,
© Jan Kath Design GmbH
This new Oriental carpet develops the concept of vintage further. The carpet woven in Iran was given an
“antique finishing”, a process that consists of washing, burning away and shearing, in order to lend the carpet
a “used look”.

Levi’s jeans jacket, 1960s, USA, Jeansmuseum Ruedi Karrer,
photo: Betty Fleck, © ZHdK
This jeans jacket shows natural signs of wear; in the exhibition it is contrasted with items of clothing which, on
leaving the factory, already showed artificially produced traces of use .

Allison Joyce, photograph from the series Fashion Victims, 2010, © Allison Joyce
This photograph shows how a brand-new pair of jeans is made to look old by means of sandblasting – with
enormous health risks for those who carry out the work.

Anirban Ghosh & Satchith Paulose, The Art of Shabby Chic, short, 2013, © ZHdK
This short film shows how, in India, a new piece of furniture is given the “ shabby chic” look by hand.
