Aki Kaurismäki, geboren 1957, arbeitete er als Kellner, bei der Post, als Tellerwäscher und lange Zeit als
Filmkritiker, bevor er Filme drehte. 1981 gründete er
mit seinem zwei Jahre älteren Bruder Mika und vier
anderen jungen Filmemachern die Villealfa-Produktion. Bei seinen Filmen, die häufig von Verlierern der Gesellschaft handeln, arbeitet er seither mit einem festen
Stamm an Schauspielern, darunter Kati Outinen und
Matti Pellonpää († 1995). Kameramann all seiner Filme ist Timo Salminen. 1990 verließ Kaurismäki Finnland, um gemeinsam mit seiner Frau, der Malerin Paula Oinonen, in Portugal zu leben. 1994, nach drei Auslandsproduktionen, beschloss er dann, nur noch in
Finnland zu drehen.
Aki Kaurismäki, born in 1957, worked as a waiter,
a postman, a dishwasher and a film critic before he
started shooting his own films. In 1981 he co-founded the production company Villealfa with his older
brother Mika and four other filmmakers. His films often portray the losers in society and he works with a
set group of actors, including Kati Outinen and Matti
Pellonpää († 1995). Timo Salminen is the cameraman
of all of his films. In 1990 Kaurismäki and his wife, the
painter Paula Oinonen, left Finland to live in Portugal.
In 1994, following three foreign productions, he decided to only shoot films in Finland.

Aki Kaurismäkis famoses Regiedebüt: Die stilbildende
„Übersetzung“ des Dostojewski-Wälzers in die universelle Sprache seines finnischen Minimalismus. In seinem ersten Spielfilm verlegte Aki Kaurismäki die Handlung des Dostojewski-Romans „Schuld und Sühne“ nach Helsinki. Der ehemalige Jura-Student Rahikainen arbeitet in einem Schlachthof. Eines
Abends folgt er einem Geschäftsmann in dessen Wohnung: „Ich
bin gekommen, um Sie zu töten.“ – „Warum?“ fragt dieser zurück. – „Das werden Sie nie erfahren.“ Der Mann hatte Jahre zuvor seine Freundin bei einem Unfall getötet und war freigesprochen worden. Aber ist dies das wirkliche Mordmotiv? Denn Rahikainen gibt sich keine Mühe, die Spuren zu beseitigen, verliebt
sich in die einzige Zeugin und lässt sich auf ein Katz-und-MausSpiel mit der Polizei ein, das er letztlich nicht gewinnen will.
Nach einem kurzen Ausflug mit falschem Pass über die Grenze
liefert er sich den Gesetzeshütern aus … Schon in seinem eigenwilligen, lakonischen Debüt kam Kaurismäkis stilistische Präzision voll zur Geltung. Viele Motive und formale Mittel seines späteren Werks nahm diese minimalistische Übersetzung aus dem
Russischen bereits vorweg.
Aki Kaurismäki‘s splendid directing debut: the seminal
“translation” of the weighty tome by Dostoevsky into the
universal language of his Finnish minimalism. In his first
feature film, Aki Kaurismäki transfers the plot of Dostoevsky‘s
novel “Crime and Punishment” to modern-day Helsinki. Former
law student Rahikainen works in a slaughterhouse. One evening
he follows a business man to his flat: “I have come to kill you.”
– “Why?” asks the other man. – “You will never find out.” The
man had killed his girlfriend in an accident years before and
had been cleared of all charges. But is that the actual motive
for the murder? For Rahikainen makes no effort to remove any
clues, falls in love with the only witness and gets himself involved
in a game of cat and mouse with the police that he ultimately
does not wish to win. After a short excursion across the border
with a fake passport, he gives himself up to the police... Kaurismäki‘s stylistic precision is already clearly visible in his idiosynchratic, laconic debut. Many of the motifs and technical means
of his later works are already inherent to this minimalist translation of the Russian.
