Results present fruitful insights to cope with the consequences of the economic crisis that hits growing numbers of consumers. Instead of focusing on the construction and reconstruction of personal lives through consumption, the research inquires into what happens when people are confronted with limited financial possibilities. Moreover, the issue is studied without a priori valorization, such as poverty or deprivation. This approach offers new theoretical perspectives. This research examines anti-consumption practices, motivations and values within attempts to live a more sustainable lifestyle. This perspective moves sustainable consumption away from a rational information processing and environmentally motivated choice to incorporate various subjective and individualistic needs and values. Hence, the challenge for sustainable marketers is to position sustainable practices along side self interested notions such as independence, beauty, quality or value for money. Many consumers profess to want to avoid unethical offerings in the marketplace yet few act on this inclination. This study investigates the nature of the rationales and justifications used by consumers to make sense of this discrepancy. Consumer resistance in the marketplace is currently limited to small niche groups. This study investigates why resistance is so limited, in spite of survey results which suggest that a much larger group of people are interested in ethical consumption. This is the first study to investigate the nature of consumer rationales, and reinforces the need for non-surveybased research to understand nuanced consumer reactions and behaviors in ethical consumerism. In recent years research on consumption and environment has found more attention and the results are stimulating (Stern et al. 1997, Princen et al. 2002). There is no doubt that consumption as a social process and consumerism as a social reality (or ideology, as some scholars prefer to put it, cf. Lodziak 2002) contribute to a substantial degree to local and global environmental problems and pose some serious constraints—if not clear obstacles—to a sustainable development of the planet. We need to take these more or less voluntary changes into account— otherwise we neglect social reality and, may be, the modest results of the sustainability discourse where research is a part of. Ecological modernisation theory has been developed so far mainly with respect to the production sphere. In order to apply the theory to the sphere of consumption, it needs to be enriched with some of the central concepts from the sociology of consumption. What results is a contextual model of (domestic) consumption which combines an actor‐oriented approach with a system‐of‐provision perspective of consumer behaviour. In conclusion, the relevance of the proposed model for research on the ecological modernisation of domestic consumption is discussed. First, the broad issues of business sustainability are examined with a focus on sustainable production and consumption and consideration of North-South issues. Second, the book tackles the major methodologies and approaches toward organizing and developing more sustainable products and services. Third, a collection of global case studies highlights the progress made by a wide range of companies toward dematerialization, eco-innovation and design for durability. Finally, the book collects together a comprehensive set of literature, resources and addresses of useful organizations. This book introduces the idea of design thinking‚ the collaborative process by which the designer′ s sensibilities and methods are employed to match people′ s needs not only with what is technically feasible and a viable business strategy. In short‚ design thinking converts need into demand. It′ s a human−centered approach to problem solving that helps people and organizations become more innovative and more creative. This work asserts the belief that the power of design can influence a more responsible approach to our threatened environment. It shows how everyone, from those at the forefront of design to the consumers, can contribute to the well-being of the planet through an awareness of design and technology. The book explores a more spirituallysatisfying approach to design - designing for need, not greed. It also includes examples from all areas of design, from packaging and product design to large-scale architecture. Practical advice and checklists for the consumer on selecting and buying, using and reusing is also featured. Design is the Problem explains: - How sustainability isn't as difficult to understand and address as many would have you think - Several of the leading frameworks and perspectives on sustainability - How to insert sustainability into development process you're already using - The many, practical strategies that make the products, services, and events you design and develop more sustainable—right now Als Ergebnis des Forschungsprojektes "Möglichkeiten einer umweltgerechten Produktgestaltung im Bereich der Normung" im Auftrag des Bundesumweltministeriums entstand ein Handbuch zur Integration von Umweltaspekten, das im Herbst 2000 veröffentlicht wurde. This volume is a technical and operative contribution to the United Nations "Decade on Education for Sustainable Development" (2005-2014), aiding the development of a new generation of designers, responsible and able in the task of designing environmentally sustainable products. The book provides a comprehensive framework and a practical tool to support the design process. This is an important text for those interested in the product development processes. "Sustainable by Design" offers a compelling and innovative, design-centred approach that explores both the meaning and practice of sustainable design. Walker explores the design process in the context of sustainability, and challenges conventional ways of defining, designing and producing functional objects. He discusses the personal design process, Lehre 12/13 - Projekt – Mensch und Interaktion: „Essen und Denken“/Marc Hassenzahl/Matthias Laschke/Christa Liedtke/Claudius Lazzeroni/Marius Tippkämper Sammlung Literatur Nachhaltigkeit, Ernährung und Design – Wuppertal Institut - FG4/Folkwang - Experience Design – Stand 31.10.12 Natural Capitalism Lovins, Hunter; Lovins, Armory; Hawken Paul 2000 Back Bay Books In the Bubble Thackara, John 2005 MIT Press User Experience in the Age of Sustainability Kramer, Kem-Laurin 2012 Elsevier/Morgan Kaufmann 7 tacit knowledge, ephemeral design, experimental design, and the relationship between intellectual design criteria, physical expression and aesthetic experience. The authors argue that it is possible for companies to reduce energy and materials consumption by up to 90 percent but still increase profits, production, and employment. They outline the four strategies that underlie "natural capitalism" and, using hypercars and neighborhood land use and superefficient buildings as examples, show how these strategies are being applied. They also identify ways resources are being wasted and explain the principles of "resource productivity." Throughout their book, the authors indicate new business opportunities that will be created by practicing "natural capitalism." In the Bubble is about a world based less on stuff and more on people. We are regaining respect for what people can do that technology can't. In the Bubble describes services designed to help people carry out daily activities in new ways. Objects and systems play a supporting role in a people-centered world. The design focus is on services, not things. And new principles—above all, lightness—inform the way these services are designed and used. At the heart of In the Bubble is a belief, that ethics and responsibility can inform design decisions without impeding social and technical innovation. User Experience in the Age of Sustainability focuses on the economic, sociological and environmental movement in business to make all products including digital ones more sustainable. This title helps you to: learn about the fundamentals of sustainability and how it can change the future of user experience professionals; learn how to integrate sustainability into designs with a solid framework using user research methodology, techniques, and purposeful metrics; find out how to integrate sustainability frameworks into the software and product development cycles; find out how sustainability applies to mobile and digital products with discussions on user messaging, dematerialization, and efficient design; and, see how companies have made it work with case studies. It provides a rich and as yet untapped source of inspiration for driving the practice of experience design. However, there are currently no guidelines that describe how to apply this theory in design practice. Taking a research through design approach, I made many different products with the goal of helping people become the person they desire to be through their product interactions. Then, in order to better understand how the different design teams applied attachment theory, I created a set of design patterns that document the application of product attachment theory to the interaction design of each product. I clustered the patterns based on similarities across the different artifacts, and this produced six framing constructs , which work as specific perspectives designers can take when applying product attachment theory in an experience design project. Lecture Notes in To understand what it means to design ‘persuasive technology’, one Computer probably needs to understand it in relation to design in general. Using examples Science, 2006, from a variety of areas of design discourse, the first part of the paper presents Volume the idea that design is inherently persuasive. Following a discussion of what this 3962/2006, 112- might imply to the identification of ‘persuasive design’ as an emerging research 122 area, the idea of objects as persuasive arguments in material form is presented. Suggesting that this notion could be used as basis for working with persuasion in design, the paper finally presents a practical example of how this might work in a design research project.
