Solve the tasks on worksheet 1. New Zealand - a beautiful landscape to make movies in New Zealand (NZ) is probably the only place on earth with palms on the snowy mountains, subtropical rainforests, grassy valleys, dark woods and modern cities - all that in a two-hour flight away from each other. Almost any place and climate can be found on these islands. So it is a perfect place to make movies. Like many other nations, NZ has a history of film-making as long as Hollywood. In the 19th century, the first films were shot in New Zealand. Alfred H. Whitehouse, a travelling showman, recognized the potential of moving pictures. So in 1898, he brought the first movie camera to NZ and the first film that he made was about the opening of an exhibition in Auckland. Today lots of big companies make their own movies in NZ. Between 1912 and 1996, 162 films were made in New Zealand. One of them was “The Bounty” with stars like Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins. Then, in 1994, a TV-producing company began filming the TV series “Hercules”, soon followed by “Xena: Warrior Princess”. Many other companies got interested in that place, also Disney was filming there. In the late 1990s, Peter Jackson, a very confident filmmaker, started one of the greatest projects for his firm – “Lord of the Rings”. With a budget of over 180 million US dollars, 50 speaking roles and a crew of over 300 people it developed into the biggest project ever completed outside the USA. The movie “Lord of the Rings” is already considered as one of the most successful films of all times. It has won six Oscars, for example for the best visual effects and the best directing. With that great success of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy the NZ film industry is sure of the ability of the country to attract more large film projects. Now everyone is waiting to see what filmmakers’ next projects will be. Whatever it is – New Zealand can handle it. (adapted from: What’s new? Das Englisch-Magazin. Autumn/Winter 2003/04.)
