Die Bezeichnung Flagship-Store zeugt von Humor.
Eine kleine, fast bescheidene Boutique ist das einzige
Einzelgeschäft des inzwischen weltweit vertretenen
Labels nanushka. Minimalistisch, aber warm und
einladend wirkt die Einrichtung verglichen mit vielen anderen Läden auf Budapests Modemeile. Die Designerin Sandra Sandor (ihr Spitzname ist Nanushka)
beeindruckt durch verspielte Schnitte, coole Muster
und bequeme Materialien. Seit 2006 entwirft Sandor
Mode für Frauen. Ihre Blusen, Pullis, Hosen und
Kleider sind zwar funktional und tragbar, aber
durchaus nicht unauffällig.
It’s cheekily called the flagship store, but that’s be­
cause this small and modest boutique is the only retail
outlet totally dedicated to the reputed nanushka label
(though the brand also has further stockists all over the
world). The interior is minimalist, but warm and invit­
ing compared to the other shops on Budapest’s “fashion
avenue”. Designer Sandra Sandor (nickname: Nanush­
ka) has been creating women’s apparel since 2006. Play­
ful cuts, cool patterns and comfortable materials are the
hallmarks of her style. And her blouses, pullovers, trou­
sers and dresses are all functional and eminently wear­
able, yet highly noticeable, too.

Unter einem schlichten Ziegelgewölbe gibt es
hier exzellente Gourmetröstungen statt
Fresken und junge kreative Budapester statt
historischer Anekdoten.
There was a time when Budapest had 500
coffee houses. Famed literary haunts, urbane
belle-époque salons with mirrors and marble
columns, and cafés in the Viennese and Paris­
ian styles. Some of these once magnificent
establishments have been reopened or re­
styled in recent years. Coffee connoisseurs for
whom the brew is more important than the
décor should head for the Espresso Embassy.
Beneath its brick-vaulted ceiling, the place
offers less of the frescoes and more of the gour­
met roasts, and creative young locals in place
of historical tales.

Während die allermeisten Gäste der opulenten
Gellért- und Széchenyi-Heilbäder längst Touristen sind, kommen im Király-Bad noch jede
Menge einheimischer Stammkunden vorbei.
Manche von ihnen täglich. 1565 für die türkische Besatzerelite erbaut, verbreitet das dunkle
Kuppelbad bis heute orientalisches Flair. Wer
einen luxuriösen Badetempel ewartet, ist hier
fehl am Platz. Statt aseptischer Wellnesskultur
gibt es im Király jahrhundertealte Becken mit
jeder Menge Gebrauchsspuren. Dass die Türen
der Umkleidekabinen wacklig und einige Rohre
leck sind, tut dem Entspannen keinen Abbruch. Taking to the waters is almost a must in this his­
toric capital. The city and its surroundings boast no
fewer than 123 thermal springs. And while most of
the visitors to the opulent Gellért and Széchenyi
spas are from out of town nowadays, the Király
baths still welcome many local regulars, some of
them every day. Built in 1565 for the elite among the
Turkish occupiers of the town, the dark domed bath
still retains its oriental flair. Seekers of luxury spa
zones should look elsewhere: in contrast to the
aseptic wellness culture of today, the Király offers
centuries-old basins that bear the patina of age.
Yet while the changing-cabin doors may wobble
and a few of the pipes may leak, it’s still a wonder­
fully relaxing – and a truly unique – experience.

Voll ist es hier. Brechend voll. Laut und lebendig. Spíler, das merkt
man sofort, hat einen Nerv getroffen. Ins Leben gerufen von Zoltán
Roy Zsidai, einem der wichtigsten Gastronomen der Stadt, der eine
Menge Grips in diese Kneipe gesteckt hat. «Spíler», so erklärt es
Zsidai, «ist eine Kunstfigur, die wir für das Lokal erfunden haben.
Ein wendiger, gewiefter Mann aus dem Volk, ein Hochstapler.» Was
es zu essen gibt? Ungarische Flammkuchen, Hausmacherwurst,
Hamburger. Direkt gegenüber eröffnet im Frühjahr Zsidais neuer
Laden. «Panasiatische Küche mit einer Prise Punk!»
Here’s a place that’s always full. It’s loud and lively as well. Spíler has
clearly hit a nerve. It’s the brainchild of Zoltán Roy Zsidai, one of the
key figures on the city’s culinary scene. “Spíler,” he explains, “is a
character we created for our pub. He’s a man of the people: smart,
streetwise and a bit of a ‘wide boy’.” So what’s on the menu? Tarte
flambée Hungarian style, home-made sausages and burgers. Zsidai
will also be opening a new outlet directly opposite in spring. And what
will that be offering? “Pan-Asian cuisine with a dash of punk!”
Viele Häuser in Elisabethstadt, dem alten jüdischen

vor sich hin. Überall wird saniert und renoviert.
Dutzende von Kneipen sind hier in den letzten Jahren entstanden. «Ruin pubs» werden sie von den
Einheimischen genannt. Mit guten Ideen, Eigeninitiative und Sperrholzmöbeln hat es begonnen. Heute brummt das jüdische Viertel. Jugendliche aus
halb Europa machen hier Party. Es gibt kleine Buchhandlungen, Skatershops und einen alten Kleinbus
der sächsischen Marke Barkas, in dem vier Leute gemütlich Kaffee trinken können. Auch das jüdische
Leben ist in den vergangenen Jahren wieder erstarkt. Es gibt verschiedene Gedenkstätten, Museen
und einige koschere Restaurants.
Many of the buildings in Elizabethtown, the old Jew­
ish Quarter in the heart of Pest, are crumbling away.
But they’re also being restored all over. And dozens of
bars have sprung up here in the last few years. “Ruin
pubs”, the locals call them. It all began with ideas, ini­
tiative and plywood furniture. And today the area’s
abuzz. Young people from all over Europe come and
party here. There are small bookshops, skater shops,
and even an old East German Barkas minibus in which
four people can sit and enjoy a coffee. Local Jewish life
has undergone a revival, too. The area further features
several museums and monuments and a number of
kosher restaurants.

Von aussen ist das Kempinski keine Schönheit. Die
postmoderne Fassade wirkt längst altbacken wie
eine Bundfaltenjeans. Umso überraschender
ist es, was der Designerin Maria Vafiadis im
Erdgeschoss gelungen ist. Eine grosszügige Lobby, die mit ihrem eleganten Materialmix beeindruckt, ohne abzuschrecken. Mit freundlichem Service,
smarten Ideen und vielseitigen Angeboten will dieses Hotel Teil eines neuen, quicklebendigen Budapest sein,
und das gelingt ihm gut. Ganz besonders im És Bisztró. Holzboden, weisse
Kacheln, rote Keramikkaraffen einerseits, eine glamouröse Spiegelwand andererseits. «És» ist der Frühstücksraum
des Hotels, aber auch eine österreichischungarische Brasserie, ein zwangloser Treffpunkt und eine Garantie für Gaumenfreuden.
Die «dry-aged» Steaks sind eine Sensation!
Granted: from the outside the Kempinski is no great
shakes. The postmodern façade looks as contem­
por­ary as a pair of pleated jeans. So it’s all the
more of a surprise to discover what designer
Maria Vafiadis has made out of its ground
floor, including a lobby that is generously
sized and features an intriguingly appeal­
ing mix of materials. With friendly ser­
vice, smart ideas and a wide range of
amenities, the Kempinski aims to be
part of a new and lively Budapest. It’s an
ambition achieved, not least in És Bisz­
tró with its wood floor, white tiles and red
ceramic decanters and its splendid mir­
rored wall. “És” is the hotel’s breakfast
room. But it’s also an Austro-Hungarian
brasserie, a casual meeting place and a guar­
antee of culinary delights (the “dry-aged” steaks
are truly sensational!).

Il Bacio di Stile

Untergebracht in einem Palast aus dem 19. Jahrhundert ist das Bacio di Stile ein
Fashion-Kaufhaus der Superlative. Mit unglaublichem Aufwand wurden die
fünf Stockwerke des Neorenaissance-Gebäudes an der Andrássy Avenue umgestaltet. Auf 5000 Quadratmetern Verkaufsfläche sind mehr als 40 Topmarken
vertreten. Werke von zeitgenössischen Künstlern wie Marina Abramovic,
Grayson Perry, Viola Vass oder Cindy Sherman zieren die Räume. Ein Besuch
des Kaufhauses lohnt sich also auch für Menschen, die weder ein Kleid von
Zadig & Voltaire noch Schuhe von Jimmy Choo kaufen wollen. Zumal es im
Erdgeschoss ein empfehlenswertes Café gibt und im Dachgeschoss demnächst ein spektakuläres Gourmetrestaurant eröffnet werden soll.
Housed in a 19th-century palace, the Bacio di Stile is a fashion store of superla­
tives. The five floors of this neo-Renaissance edifice on Andrássy Avenue have
been lovingly refurbished. And the 5,000 square metres of sales area are home to
over 40 top brands. The walls are adorned with contemporary artworks by the likes
of Marina Abramovic, Grayson Perry, Viola Vass and Cindy Sherman, too. So the store
is well worth a visit even for those with little interest in Jimmy Choo shoes or a Zadig &
Voltaire dress. Especially since there’s a great café on the ground floor, which will soon be
joined by a spectacular gourmet restaurant on the roof.
Margaret Island

Wer nach einigen Tagen in der
Stadt etwas Auslauf braucht,
schnüre seine Laufschuhe und
begebe sich auf die Donauinsel.
Rund um das Eiland wurde eine
Tartanbahn von 5 Kilometern
Länge angelegt. Man joggt mit
Blick auf die Donau, das Parlament und die Hügel von Buda.
Vorbei am Kajakclub und an Klosterruinen, Wiesen, Bäumen,
Tiergehegen und Thermalbädern. Und – hopp! – gleich noch
eine zweite Runde!
If you’ve been in the city a few days and need a bit of a breather,
put your running shoes on and head for this island in the middle
of the Danube. A 5-kilometre running track has been laid out
here, allowing visitors to jog around the island while enjoying
fabulous views of the river, the Parliament building and the hills
of Buda. Past the kayak club, the ruined convent, the fields, the
trees, the animal enclosures and the thermal baths – and then
round again!

Im Herbst 2012 wurde Zona eröffnet, ein Gourmetrestaurant, das
sich nicht an die Regeln hält. Statt weisser Tischtücher und gediegener Ruhe gibt es hier schlichte Holzmöbel, eine Wolke aus Glaslampen und laute Clubmusik. Zona bietet feines Essen für Menschen, denen Fine Dining zu steif ist. Kristián Huszárs Küche
basiert auf ungarischen Gerichten, die mit baskischen und japanischen Ideen angereichert beziehungsweise abgespeckt werden.
Das fünfgängige Menü ist mit 40 Euro eine günstige Angelegenheit.
Opened in autumn 2012, Zona is a gourmet restaurant that flaunts
the rules. No white tablecloths and dignified calm here: this is a place
of simple wood furniture, clouds of glass lamps and loud club music.
Zona offers good food for folk
who find fine dining a little
too stiff. Kristián Huszár’s
cuisine is based on Hungar­
ian dishes that he’s enriched
(or in some cases stream­
lined) with Basque and
Ja­pan­ese ideas. (And at 40
euro, the five-course set meal
offers great value for money!)

«Müpa» nennen die
Budapester ihren
2005 fertig gestellten Kulturkomplex.
Direkt am Donauufer liegt dieses
Schlachtschiff der
ungarischen Hochkultur. Das Müpa
ist ein schnörkelloser Bau mit grosszügigen Foyers, riesigen Rampen und
organischen Formen. Holz und
Sandstein sorgen
im Inneren für
Wärme. Der 25 Meter hohe Béla-Bartók-Saal gilt als eine
der besten Konzerthallen Europas.
Auch das Festival-Theater genügt höchsten Ansprüchen.
Es wird an etwa 100 Abenden im Jahr vom Staatsballett bespielt, einer überaus empfehlenswerten Budapester Institution. «Die Bu­dapester tanzen gern und sehen sich gerne
Tanz an», sagt Péter Ertl, Direktor des Staatlichen Tanztheaters.
“The Müpa” is what the locals call their city’s arts complex,
which was completed in 2005. This battleship of Hungarian
high culture stands right beside the Danube. It’s a no-non­
sense building with spacious foyers, sweeping staircases and
organic forms. It also boasts a warm and welcoming interior,
thanks to the extensive use of sandstone and wood. The Béla
Bartók Hall, with its 25-metre ceiling, is one of Europe’s fin­
est concert venues. And the Festival Theatre also meets the
most discerning audience demands. The State Ballet – an­
other Budapest institution well worth experiencing – per­
forms here some 100 times a year. “The people of this city
love to dance,” says ballet director Péter Ertl. “And they love
watching it, too.”
