9, 10, 11 aot - August 9, 10, 11 For the third year in a row, Montreal takes on Oriental colours
and celebrates the meeng of cultures from here and elsewhere
during the Orientalys Fesval! For three days and three nights,
Jacques-Carer Quay crosses three connents and brings
fesval-goers to Morocco, Japan, Egypt, China and Turkey, not to
menon Tunisia, Algeria, Lebanon, Syria, Iran, Afghanistan and
Cambodia.
On the program, there are original dances and musical shows
on the Loto-Qubec stage presented by arsts and groups from
Quebec and around the world, along with crowd acvies on the
TD stage, exhibions and free workshops for young and old alike,
all within a veritable Oriental Medina oering culture, art, cras
and gourmet fare from Eastern countries.
The good ship Orientalys lis anchor on August 9 at noon on Jacques-Carer Quay. Come on board for a fabulous journey to
the heart of a city of a thousand and one colours, from here and
elsewhere!

spectacle d'une rare intensit en deux pares. Ce rendez-vous crmonial de trois
heures dbutera vendredi et se poursuivra samedi. Pre de l’Orchestre symphonique
Amazigh, Moulay M’hamed Dammou reprsente une gure musicale incontournable
au Maroc, lou surtout pour avoir bris les fronres culturelles et popularis la
musique amazigh dans tout le Maghreb. Le Maroc Amazigh accoste au Vieux-Port, le
temps d’une transe musicale, pour le plaisir des mlomanes de tous bords! In partnership with Dar Al Maghrib in Montreal, M’hamed Dammou and his orchestra’s
twelve musicians oer the Orientalys audience a performance of unusual intensity in
two parts. This three hour ceremonial rendezvous will start Friday and connue on
Saturday. The father of the Amazigh Symphony, Mohamed Dammou is a living legend
in Morocco, praised above all for having broken through cultural boundaries and
popularized Amazigh music throughout the Maghreb. Berber Morocco docks at the Old
Port, long enough for a musical trance, to the delight of music-lovers of every stripe!

Quebec-Balkan group Les Gitans de Sarajevo. Their Gypsy music of uprooted people,
both melancholic and fesve, imparts a fresh and precise Balkan avour, while seng

Mythiques, enchanteurs, hypnosants, les derviches tourneurs, objet de
fascinaon tant en Orient qu’en Occident, se produiront en entre libre pour la
premire fois  Montral! L’un faisant pare de l’ordre Mawlawi d’Alep et l’autre
praquant la danse  tanoura  d’gypte, ils tournent sur eux-mmes pour
retrouver le divin, comme les plantes tournant autour du soleil,  une vitesse
hallucinante!
Alors que le derviche d’Alep reprsente la spiritualit sobre des derviches de Syrie
et de Turquie, le danseur  tanoura  jongle avec ses jupons mulcolores, les
remonte, les jee en l’air, puis les rarape, tout en connuant le cercle inni de
pirouees. Accompagns par le rcitateur Sidi Thaer Malko, le chur du Centre
Sou de Montral et l’Ensemble de Nizar Tabcharani, les derviches s’lancent dans
des tournoiements extaques rythms par le crescendo des chants sous.
Ce spectacle de clture d’Orientalys est un moment spirituel intense, une musique
ternelle et une danse cosmique des plus spectaculaires… une chance unique de
s’inier aux rituels sacrs d’Orient!
Mythical, enchanng, hypnozing – the whirling dervishes, objects of fascinaon
in East and West alike, will perform with free admission for the rst me in
Montreal! One belongs to the Mawlawi order of Aleppo, while the other pracses
tanoura, a dance style from Egypt. Both turn on themselves to nd divinity, like
planets revolving around the sun, at hallucinang speed!
While the dervish from Aleppo represents the sober spirituality of dervishes from Syria and Turkey, the tanoura dancer juggles with mul-coloured pecoats, raises
them, throws them into the air and then catches them, all the while connuing an
innite circle of pirouees.
Accompanied by reciter Sidi Thaer Malko, the Montreal Su Centre choir and the
Nizar Tabcharani Ensemble, the dervishes soar in ecstac whirls punctuated by
the crescendo of Su chants. This Orientalys closing show is an intense spiritual
moment, an eternal musical form and a truly spectacular cosmic dance – a unique
opportunity for iniaon into the sacred rituals of the East!
