5. Abgeschlossene Forschungsprojekte Professor Dr. habil. Joachim Bröcher Europa-Universität Flensburg Stand: 9. August 2016 1. Professional Growth through Guided Autobiographical Reflection: A Case Study from Pre-Service Teacher Education 1.1. Projektbeschreibung: A growing body of theoretical, anecdotal, and empirical research describes the transformative power of autobiographical reflection in the context of pre-service teacher education. How exactly this can be done is a matter of current research and debate. Using qualitative documentation and analysis methods this single case study explores the endeavor to advise and support a master´s student in pre-service teacher education Projektlaufzeit: 1.01.2015-30.08.2016 Förderung/Drittmittelgeber: Eigenmittel und Landesmittel SchleswigHolstein Projektpartner/innen: Prof. Dr. Janet Painter, Lenoir-Rhyne University, Hickory, North Carolina; Prof. Dr. Joyce H. The Long Struggle to Turn around an Inhumane, Corrupt, Paramilitary School Specialized for Students with Emotional and Behavioral Difficulties 2.1. Projektbeschreibung: This case study examines a series of events that took place in West Germany at a specialized school for students with emotional and social needs. It focuses on a struggle lasting several years that was waged in this school and its environment to put an end to an inhumane, corrupt, paramilitary leadership, school culture and pedagogy. Some one thousand pages of text as well as media contributions from both TV and radio were evaluated and supplemented with interviews for the study. Analysis of these materials reveals the tight linkage between professional incompetence, human character deficits, intrigues, power struggles and micropolitical processes in a school and among the authorities supervising it. Additionally, it illus1 2.2. 2.3. trates the shortcoming in German education law, which makes scant provision for firing professionally unqualified individuals from school administrative positions. Further, the detailed change strategies deployed are distilled into an effective overall change strategy that relies on highly principled and action-oriented individuals inside the school working together with the same type of individual outside the school. Ultimately, after some 5 ½ years, it succeeded in removing the principal from office thus clearing the way for long-overdue pedagogical reforms. The implications of these findings are relevant to pre-service teacher training, leadership preparation programs, continuing professional development as well as potential revision of administrative procedures relating to the appointment and removal of school administrators Projektlaufzeit: 1.01.2012-31.12.2015 Förderung/Drittmittelgeber: Eigenmittel und Landesmittel SchleswigHolstein 3. Implementing School-Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) in German Schools: The Challenge of Knowledge Politics, Education Cultures and Teacher Perspectives 3.1. Projektbeschreibung: Lässt sich `Schoolwide Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS)´ an deutschen inklusiven Schulen verankern? Exploring the Personal Life Story and Family History: Results from an Intergenerational Narrative Learning Project with Older Adults in South Westphalia 4.1. Projektbeschreibung: Using qualitative interviews, focus groups, storytelling and collective journaling, in this project we reconstructed and reflected on the shared family histories of individuals between the ages of 70 and 85. The project had an informal, processual, and intergenerational character and was conducted in a local village community in South Westphalia, West Germany 2 4.2. 4.3. 4.4. Projektbeschreibung: Ten-day workshops and field trips had a key role in the partnership between a university of applied sciences in East Germany and a small private liberal arts college in North Carolina. This case study evaluates activities and programs from the involved faculty´s perspective. The authors look at the underlying institutional process, they discuss organization and content of the programs, and reflect the learning experiences of the participating students. Conclusions are drawn for a further program development and with regard to internationalization strategies Laufzeit: 1.06.2009-30.06.2014 Förderung/Drittmittelgeber: Landesmittel Sachsen-Anhalt und Landesmittel North Carolina Projektpartner/innen: Prof. Dr. Katherine Pasour, Prof. Dr. Janet Painter und Prof. Dr. Kim Matthews von der Lenoir-Rhyne University, Hickory, North Carolina und Prof. Dr. Joyce H. How a Practitioner Thinks in Action: Shaping Pedagogical and Didactic Strategies for Students with Emotional and Behavioral Difficulties through Textual Analysis of a Teacher´s Journal 6.1. Projektbeschreibung: An experienced special education teacher, newly arrived in an urban school for students with emotional, social and behavioral difficulties, kept a journal spanning the first 95 days at work. Using qualitative content analysis, his field notes were organized by subject areas (work conditions, student behavior, teacher interventions, collaboration with colleagues, work with parents, interprofessional work and school-community relationships, as well as the teacher's reflections) and analyzed with reference to the patterns in them. For selected patterns, the frequency of occurrence and related changes over the course of the school days were analyzed. The results not only provide insights into a challenging educational reality but also provide information for a deeper understanding of student behavior, for the further development of teaching and behavior-related intervention, for supporting the journal-keeping teacher, and for improvement of the overall pedagogical culture of subject school Laufzeit: 1.10.2012-30.09.2014 6.2. 3 6.3. 6.4. The “Training Room Program” in German Schools: A critical Program Evaluation 7.1. Projektbeschreibung: Since 2003, the `Training Room´ Program (TRP), a time-out model that is based on the American `Responsible Thinking Process´ (RTP), has become established in German schools in response to students’ increasingly challenging learning and social behavior. School administrators and academics alike recommend the implementation of the TRP as part of their efforts to conform to the UN convention in order to ensure the success of inclusive schooling for students with emotional and social needs. But in doing so, formal inclusion and temporary exclusion within the school become interconnected. The results yielded by this program evaluation show that there is to date no convincing empirical evidence as to the effectiveness of the TRP. On the contrary, the data indicate that the TRP actually has a negative impact on teaching and learning processes and on the culture of the school as a whole Laufzeit: 1.1.2012-30.06.2014 Förderung/Drittmittelgeber: Eigenmittel und Landesmittel SchleswigHolstein 7.2. 7.3. 8. Stepping up to Complex Picture Composition: How Adolescent Students with Emotional and Behavioral Difficulties Succeed at Picture Making with Movable Layout Technique 8.1. Projektbeschreibung: Movable Layout Technique (MLT) is a researchbased instructional adaptation to teach art in classrooms with adolescent students with emotional and behavioral difficulties (EBD). With MLT these students unexpectedly find themselves in a complex process of designing, experimenting and composing. They are easily and successfully guided into the artistic terrain and encouraged to independently lay out pictures and creative compositions in a fun way. Given the chance to arrange figure elements against a background initially on a trial basis, then to manipulate them in new and different ways, makes perspective and the pictorial space concrete for the student as foreground-background, in front of-behind, etc. and dynamically tangible, comprehensible and adjustable. Photocopies are made of the prepared layout. These copies are then enhanced using various artistic methods, including painting, flat screen printing or computerbased image processing applications. In this way, escape-maintained disruptive student behavior can be circumvented. With MLT students step up to complex picture composition and spatial organization. MLT opens up ways to freer forms of artistic work Laufzeit: 1.01.1991-31.12.2014 8.2. 4 8.3. 8.4.
