Juli 2003 2:50 14 Welcome to Alice 1 Welcome to Alice Alice is a user-friendly software package for the transmission and reception of audio and video data. The seamless synchronization of video and sound data through the monitor and sound card enables speech and moving images to be reproduced in high quality, both on your computer and the computer of the remote station. Alice allows video and sound connections to computers on which Alice is installed, to video telephones, to video conferencing systems and to what are known as content servers (image information services). Alice offers you several ways of connecting to a remote site thanks to its support for various standards. You can connect to an ISDN remote site with a direct ISDN connection over one or two ISDN channels. Alice uses the H.320 standard for ISDN connections. You can also establish an IP connection to a remote site using the H.323 standard. It does not matter whether the connection is within a LAN or over the Internet. If a camera is connected to your computer, you have the option of transmitting your own local image to the remote site. Alice can be used to call friends or business partners with whom video images are to be exchanged to complement a conversation. If there is no camera connected to your computer, Alice can still be used to view video transmissions from remote content servers. Alice – 1 Welcome to Alice 5 alice-e.book Seite 6 Dienstag, 29. Alice – 3 Working with Alice 19 alice-e.book Seite 20 Dienstag, 29. Juli 2003 2:50 14 How Alice Works 4 How Alice Works Using Alice you can establish connections to various remote sites over the ISDN line or an existing network connection. Alice can connect to video conference systems, content servers and remote sites equipped with Alice software or other software compliant with the international standards H.320 and H.323. Video camera Webcam Frame grabber card Video interface Microphone Alice H.320 Full-duplex soundcard H.323 CAPI 2.0 TCP/IP FRITZ!Card Network adapter / DUN ISDN Speaker LAN / Internet How Alice Works Alice receives audio data for transmission through a microphone and the full duplex sound card of your computer. Incoming audio data is transmitted to the speakers via the sound card. Alice can receive its own video data via a USB camera or a video camera with a frame grabber card. A frame grabber card is a supplementary adapter that transforms an individual image (a frame) from a video source (here the camera) into digital data. The connected camera provides the video data for the video interface. This is the interface to the operating system from which the video data is sent to Alice. 20 Alice – 4 How Alice Works alice-e.book Seite 21 Dienstag, 29. Juli 2003 2:50 14 Standards Used by Alice 4.1 Standards Used by Alice Alice uses the following standards: Standard Description H.320 An ITU (International Telecommunications Union) standard. General term for all audio and video transmission over ISDN. H.323 An ITU (International Telecommunications Union) standard. A package of standards for audio and video transmission via IP connections. H.221 / H.225 These standards define the protocols with which video and audio data is sent and user-defined data is transmitted. H.230 This standard defines audio and video commands in the H.221 standard. H.242 This standard defines how the B channels are managed. It also describes the protocols for establishing and clearing a connection. H.245 This standard defines a control channel over which the properties of the connection are negotiated. H.261 Standard for video compression. H.261 supports the CIF and QCIF formats (see below). H.263 An improved standard for video compression which requires less bandwidth than H.261. H.263 also supports the QCIF and 4CIF formats (see below). G.711 A standard for audio coding. In this standard a bandwidth of 56 kBit/s is required for transmission of the audio data. A number of remote sites allow G.711 only for transmission with two B channels (128 kBit/s), so that enough bandwidth remains available for the transmission of video data. Alice – 4 How Alice Works 21 alice-e.book Seite 22 Dienstag, 29. Juli 2003 2:50 14 Standards Used by Alice 22 Standard Description AV-II An AVM standard for audio coding. In this standard a bandwidth of only 16 kBit/s is required for transmission of the audio data. The effective compression performed with AV-II makes more bandwidth available for transmission of the video data. AV-II also offers improved audio quality thanks to the increase in frequency range from 3 kHz to 7 kHz. CIF Common Intermediate Format; graphic format with a resolution of 352 x 388 pixels. QCIF Quarter Common Intermediate Format; graphic format with a resolution of 176 x 144 pixels. SQCIF Sub Quarter Common Intermediate Format; graphic format with a resolution of 128 x 96 pixels. 4CIF 4 Common Intermedia Format; graphic format of four times the CIF size, with a resolution of 704 x 576 pixels. MMX MMX is available in all new Intel processors. MMX is a processor extension that Alice uses for intensive computing tasks. Only MMX-capable computers can perform audio coding in accordance with AV-II (see above). Alice – 4 How Alice Works alice-e.book Seite 23 Dienstag, 29. Juli 2003 2:50 14 Tips and Tricks 5 Tips and Tricks This chapter provides you with useful tips on using Alice and on solving problems that may arise during operation. 5.1 Selection of the Video Device: Alice Does not Display a Local Image Alice offers the option of switching among different cameras during an active connection. If no local image is displayed after you start Alice, it may be that Alice is using another video source installed on your computer. In this case, switch the video source by pressing “Ctrl+T”. 5.2 Operation Behind a Firewall If you would like to operate Alice behind a firewall, please note the following: Alice uses the video conference protocol H.323 for IP connections. In the firewall, the ports used for such connections must be enabled for incoming and outgoing data. The TCP port 1720 must be enabled for the control channel in accordance with the H.323 standard. While connecting, additional UDP ports from the range from 1024-65535 are determined which are then used for video and audio transmission. In some cases these ports must be taken into consideration in the configuration of the firewall. For information about the settings necessary for an H.323 connection, please contact the manufacturer of your firewall. Alice – 5 Tips and Tricks 23 alice-e.book Seite 24 Dienstag, 29. Juli 2003 2:50 14 Dialing via an Internet Connection 5.3 Dialing via an Internet Connection In order to connect to a remote site via the Internet, you have to know its IP address. However, this address is usually assigned dynamically when you dial into the Internet Service Provider. The current IP address of your computer can be found in the Alice “Information” window. Contact your conversation partner by e-mail, chat or telephone and inform them of the IP address at which you can be reached as long as the connection is active. Various Internet Service Providers offer the option of reserving a fixed host name at which a computer can be reached, independent of the current IP address (dynamic DNS service). Where this option is available, additional software is implemented on the computer to transmit the IP address assigned to a DNS server each time the computer connects to the Internet. This means that the computer can always be reached at the same host name. For more information about dynamic DNS service, please contact the corresponding provider. 24 Alice – 5 Tips and Tricks alice-e.book Seite 25 Dienstag, 29.
