Protein crystallography without crystals: A novel molecular sieve for easy and rapid crystal structure determination of proteins Initiative: "Experiment!" Ausschreibung: Explorative Phase Bewilligung: 08.12.2015 Laufzeit: 1 Jahre 6 Monate Structure determination by protein crystallography is limited by the ability of proteins to crystallize. Since many proteins cannot be crystallized, high resolution X-ray structure information is often missing. The applicant proposes to develop a novel and rapid approach for structure determination by making use of a molecular framework for protein crystallization. This will eliminate the need to crystallize proteins in the conventional way but still would provide high-resolution structural information. The molecular framework will act like a molecular sieve, which will trap proteins. The structure of the protein can then be easily determined in complex with the sieve. If successful, this will open a universal, easy, fast and low sample consuming approach that will eliminate the biggest hurdle of protein crystallography.
