1. Customs and immigration
1. Douane et immigration
Masters of all vessels arriving in Guernsey must complete
(immediately upon arrival, before any crew member goes
ashore) the Customs and Immigration declaration given
to them by Port Control staff. Completed forms must be
placed in one of the yellow Customs boxes or returned to
a duty Customs official afloat. In addition, vessels arriving
from any port outside the Bailiwick of Guernsey must
display a Q flag on entry. All persons on board vessels
arriving from places other than the United Kingdom, the
Republic of Ireland, the Isle of Man, Jersey or the other
islands of the Bailiwick must be in possession of a valid
travel document.

2. Arrival
2. Arrivée
Visiting craft will be met on arrival by a member of the
marina staff who will issue mooring directions. Formal
entry may be made at the marina office for logging. All
visiting vessels must clear inwards at the main harbour
of St Peter Port, regardless of which marina they moor in.
Mooring in the QEII Marina is by prior arrangement only.

3. Port entry and exit
Commercial vessels are severely constrained by their
draught whilst manoeuvring within the harbour and the
approaches and small craft are to be kept well clear. A red
light at the pier head, one on the south end of the New
Jetty and one on the Inter-island Quay indicate that large
vessels are under way and prohibit entry and exit of others
except small boats of 15m or less under power, which may
proceed keeping well clear. It is also good practice to listen
out on the VHF CH12 for commercial traffic movement.
The marinas are illustrated on the map on page 16.

4. Speed Limits
4. Limitation de vitesse
Speed limits from four to six knots, as shown on the plan
of the pool and marinas on page 16, are in force in St
Peter Port Harbour. A speed limit of six knots is in force
in most of the bays around the coast of Guernsey and in
the approaches to Herm and Jethou. There is also a speed
limit of six knots off most of the bathing beaches in Herm
and at Rosaire anchorage.

5. Moorings for visiting yachts

a) In the Victoria Marina: moorings alongside pontoons
are available for boats up to a maximum of 42ft (12.8m)
LOA and a maximum draught of 6ft (1.8m). The sill height
is 4.2m above chart datum, with access approximately
2.5 hours either side of high water. Entry is controlled
by the marina staff. Control lights are positioned on
both pierheads at the entrance to the marina.

b) In the pool: if the moorings within the marinas are
full or the craft is unsuitable, yachts may be directed
to moor on pontoons laid east of the entrance.
When the tide is low, a waiting pontoon is provided
adjacent to the entrance. Dinghy landing pontoons
(for the use of those visiting yachts moored on the
pontoons) are at the end of the Victoria Pier and
adjacent to the Marina Office.
6. Fuel
a) It is strictly forbidden to refuel in the marinas or
anywhere else in the harbour except at a designated
fuelling berth.

emplacement, boat owners are advised that the QEII
berth is available for use.

a) Leave yacht tenders on any steps as they may
seriously impede local boat owners and commercial
traffic and may be removed by the harbour staff.
Also visiting yachtsmen found navigating dinghies in
an unseamanlike manner or travelling at excessive
speed within the harbour/marinas may have their
dinghies impounded for the duration of their stay in the
port. In the interest of safety, dinghies must not be used
in the marinas.

b) Lay alongside piers, jetties or ships, moor up on private
moorings or moor on your own anchor without prior
permission of Guernsey Harbours.
c) Leave your vessel unattended for more than 24 hours
except by prior arrangement with the marina office.
d) Swim or dive in any part of the harbour, including
the marinas.
e) Play audio equipment at a level that disturbs other
marina users or after 2300. Batteries may be charged
by engines only between 0800 and 1200.
f) Use on-board toilets when moored in the marinas, in
the harbour or in Havelet Bay. Toilets and showers are
on the Crown Pier and Albert Pier as seen on page 16.
8. Fresh Water
This is available on the pontoons but only for the
purpose of washing down boats if no restrictions are in
place as consumption in the island in the summer months
is very high. Hosepipes are no longer available. Boat
owners are requested to use their own hoses.

8. Eau Douce
Des points sont situés sur les pontons mais il est demandé
de ne pas laver les bateaux avec cette eau réservée à la
consommation domestique en temps de grande demande.
Flexibles ne sont plus disponibles. Propriétaires de bateaux
sont invités à utiliser leurs propres tuyaux d’arrosage.

9. Refuse disposal and

Refuse skips are provided on the adjacent quay. DO NOT
throw rubbish into the harbour or leave it on the pontoons:
as well as being unpleasant, it is also an offence in the
law. Boat owners requiring a pump-out facility (subject to
availability) are requested to contact marina staff.

10. Duration of stay

Visiting yachts intending to stay longer than 14 days should
obtain the prior permission of the Harbour Authority.

11. Insurance
All vessels must hold a minimum third-party insurance
indemnity of £1,000,000.
12. Radio facilities
Guernsey Coastguard provides emergency cover
when required and maintains a 24-hour watch on VHF
channel 16. VHF D/F bearings can also be provided on
VHF channels 16 or 67 (after initial call on 16). The aerial
position for D/F purposes is 49˚ 26.27’N, 02˚ 35.77’W. The
normal working frequency of Guernsey Coastguard is
VHF channel 20 (direct calling). The telephone number
of Guernsey Coastguard is 01481 720672. Port Control’s
working VHF channel is 12; this should be monitored by
mariners entering/exiting St Peter Port to be aware of any
impending commercial movements and is not to be used
for berthing information and general enquiries. Berthing
instructions will be given verbally by marina staff when
meeting yachts on arrival. Channel M2 (80) will be manned
from 0700 to 2300 daily: call sign St Peter Port Marina.

LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS, ALBERT PIER
The Guernsey Yacht Club is situated in a prominent
position with stunning views over the harbour, out to
Herm and south to Havelet Bay and St Martin’s Point. A
busy and bustling club offering visiting yachtsmen a truly
warm welcome 7 days a week. Just a ten minute stroll
from the Victoria Marina or a short dinghy ride from the
harbour or Havelet Bay.
The recent addition of a large sundeck now offers
members and visitors the opportunity of alfresco dining,
taking in the great panoramic views, or on occasional
inclement days the views from inside are pretty good
too! The bar is open daily from 11:00 to 23:00 and a
selection of very reasonably priced bar meals and
lunches, along with some great daily specials, are served
between 12:00 to 14:00, and some evenings.
Tea, coffee and cakes are also available during the
morning and afternoon. Club manager Vanessa and
her friendly team will be on hand to give you a true
‘GYC’ welcome.
The Club has a busy social calendar throughout the year,
regularly hosting class regattas, races and organised visits
from other Yacht Clubs from the UK and France, so if
you’re thinking of planning something why not call in to
have a chat.

ON BOARD WILL BE SUBJECT TO CONTROLLED MOORING.
The landing of animals from vessels arriving in Guernsey
directly or indirectly from places other than the United
Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, the Isle of Man, Jersey
or the other islands of the Bailiwick of Guernsey is
strictly prohibited. Any animal on board any such vessel
in harbour in the Bailiwick or at anchor or moored in the
territorial waters adjacent thereto must remain securely
confined within an enclosed part of the vessel from which
it cannot escape. Any such animal found ashore or not
confined on the vessel will be detained and may be subject
to six months’ quarantine or destroyed and the master
of the vessel prosecuted. Unless express permission is
granted by a Customs officer, no vessel with an animal on
board may moor alongside a pontoon or quay. Under no
circumstances will any vessel, irrespective of its previous
port of call, be permitted to enter the marinas with any
animal aboard.

Having navigated your way across the English Channel
into the deep safe waters of St Peter Port, you are
following in the footsteps of 2000 years of seafarers.
Guernsey’s port has been a busy harbour as far back as
the Roman era, dating back to 56AD when the island was
an important trading point between France and England.

The Vikings later claimed Guernsey’s rocky shores as their
own before the islands were added to the dukedom of
Normandy in 933. Their allegiance went with William the
Conqueror in 1066 but when King John lost Normandy
to France, the islands remained with the English Crown.
In return for their loyalty, King John granted the Channel
Islands rights and privileges so they became virtually
self-governed.

In the 1600s legalised piracy licensed by the English
Crown became commonplace as local seamen, with their
knowledge of the treacherous rocks in local waters, were
encouraged to seize foreign ships.

During Napoleon’s reign hundreds of French people fled
the revolution and arrived in Guernsey’s harbour. Sixteen
forts and 58 batteries were erected around the coast

The craggy outcrops lying just below the surface of the
ocean have claimed many ships and lives. The waters are
notoriously difficult to navigate, but once on land you are
graced with a place of peace and idyll, countryside and
coastal cliffs with good food and friendly people.

The marina is nestled in beautiful countryside with green
fields populated by rabbits, butterflies and Guernsey cows.
For those wanting to stretch their legs after hours at sea
there are a number of scenic lanes to meander through.

until 1969, Beaucette was the first
marina to be built in the Channel Islands when the owner
commissioned the British Army to blast an entrance as
part of an Army exercise. The harbour now has 115 berths
available for visiting yachtsmen and offers a peaceful, out
of the way location to spend the night.
To the north is the award winning beach, L’Ancresse Bay,
a vast stretch of white sand and a perfect place to go
windsurfing or fishing. A little further round is a golf course
and a shooting range.
To the south are two rocky outcrops separated from the
mainland at high tide – Houmet Paradis and Houmet
Benet. The former is a privately owned island with its own
micro ecosystem and the latter is often used by local
children as a place to jump off into the sea.
Beaucette Marina boasts a newly refurbished restaurant
and is within a 30 minute walk of St Sampson’s shops
and harbour, a pharmacy, a grocery store and a Channel
Islands’ Co-operative supermarket. There is also the
opportunity to refuel and stock up with water. Contact

Au sud se dressent deux affleurements rocheux séparés
du continent à marée haute : Houmet Paradis et Houmet
Benet. Le premier est une île privée qui abrite son propre
micro-écosystème, et le deuxième est souvent utilisé par les
enfants du coin comme lieu pour se jeter dans la mer.

Showers and WCs can be found at the eastern end of
Albert Pier, on Crown Pier and in the car check in area
for visitors moored in the QEII Marina. A launderette is
available at the eastern end of Albert Pier.
VISITOR INFORMATION CENTRE
This can be found at the North Plantation along the Quay,
which is just a short walk from the Crown Pier (see the
map on page 16).

Public phones in Guernsey accept coins (10p, 20p,
50p and £1) as well as phone cards, which are available
from a range of outlets. The nearest phones are within the
toilet block on the Albert Pier, on the Crown Pier and in
Church Square.

come in on the red-eye flights and are available from

along the cobbled streets of St Peter Port you will find
restaurants to suit every atmosphere and appetite. There
are more than 100 bars and bistros around the island,
many of which are within strolling distance of the harbour.
On the menu is everything from East to West with plenty of
high-class establishments that offer top quality food and
buzzing bars and bistros full of local, seasonal delicacies.
Guernsey is famous the world over for its dairy produce,
which is creamy and rich and a staple in many of our
dishes. For those interested in delving further into local
custom then Guernsey Gâche – a fruity cake - and
Beanjar – a comforting stew of beans and pork - are well
worth trying.
Seafood lovers will be kept happy as lobster, crab, seabass and sole are all considered local specialties, as
is the ormer, a rare shellfish only found in the Channel
Islands. And for those who like a tipple, Guernsey-brewed
ales and cider are available to whet the palate, including
Rocquettes cider, Breda beer and Hanois ale.
If you wanted to get your hands on local ingredients to
cook on board, then ‘hedge veg’ stalls are a common sight

But it’s not just island treats on offer. Being so close to
mainland Europe means French influences are abundant
with plenty of continental eateries. Or if your tastes are
a little more exotic, Asia is well represented with Chinese,
Indian and Thai cuisine available. The south end of St Peter
Port is a favourite in the summer months for alfresco
dining, sea views and a relaxed atmosphere.
Outside of Town there are many picturesque spots to enjoy
some dinner. Watching the sky change colour as the sun
sets over the west coast will be a moment to remember.
Or if you prefer some laid-back dining, grab some fish
and chips to eat on the sea wall. Beach kiosks around
the island offer home-made cakes and goods at very
reasonable prices and there is the added attraction of
being able to enjoy your meal dressed in your swimming
gear and towel.
A big date on the culinary calendar is the month of
October, when most island restaurants participate in
‘Tennerfest’, where patrons can enjoy a set menu at
low prices. But whenever you find yourself on the island,
we are confident your taste buds and your stomachs will
be happy.

multiples façons avec toutes sortes de restaurants du
continent. Ou si vos goûts sont un peu plus exotiques,
l’Asie occupe une place de premier choix, avec des
restaurants chinois, indiens et thaïlandais. La pointe sud
de Saint-Pierre-Port est une destination favorite l’été pour
y dîner en terrasse et profiter des vues sur la mer dans
une atmosphère détendue.
En dehors de la ville, il y a de nombreux endroits
pittoresques où savourer un dîner délicieux. Admirer le
coucher de soleil sur la côte ouest de l’île est un spectacle
qui, à lui seul, vaut le détour.
Ou si vous préférez manger dans des
endroits plus décontractés, partez chercher
un « fish and chips » que vous pourrez
aller savourer assis sur la digue du port.
Les kiosques de plage partout sur la côte
vendent des gâteaux faits maison et des
produits à des prix très raisonnables, tout
en vous offrant l’avantage de surcroît
de pouvoir aller commander votre repas
préféré en maillot de bain !
Octobre est un moment fort du calendrier
culinaire de l’île, lorsque la plupart des
restaurants participent à « Tennerfest »,
ce festival qui propose des menus fixes à

For such a small island, Guernsey
boasts a wide range of shops, most of which can be found
along the cobbled streets of St Peter Port only a short walk
from the harbour.
It is a VAT-free shopping zone so electronic and
photography equipment, jewellery and perfumes can all
be found at reasonable prices. Well-known high street
names sit next to local boutiques with top quality brands
available from a range of outlets.
There are many sailor-friendly shops and the whole
shopping experience is enhanced by the views across to
Castle Cornet and Herm.
For some local treats, head to The Guernsey Shop on the
seafront selling traditional woollen Guernseys – produced
on the islands since the 16th century. The island is an
artist’s paradise and stunning pieces can be found.
Short distances between shops and short queues mean
your excursion can be quick, or if you fancy a leisurely day
around the town, there are plenty of café pit stops where
you can refuel with tea and coffee or even a cream tea
with Guernsey produce.

of hospitality, to this corner of
old Norman land where resides the noble little people of
the sea, to the island of Guernsey, severe yet gentle…’

There is nothing more magnificent after a rough ocean
crossing then seeing the spikes of land emerge on the
horizon. St Peter Port is a particularly beautiful sight, many
say the most attractive port in the Channel Islands, with its
townhouses perched on the hillsides and cobbled streets.
It would be very easy to remain within its district for the
duration of your stay.
The island’s loyalties have boomeranged from France
to England and back over the last 1000 years and the
influence of each culture is apparent throughout the town.
Many of the old houses display a Georgian and Regency
character, built by an influx of French residents fleeing the
revolution in the 1800s. Candie Gardens meanwhile, set
above the High Street, is a rare example of a 19th century
Victorian public flower garden.

d’un type architectural anglais, « Georgian » ou « Regency »,
érigées par des résidents français fuyant la révolution dans
les années 1800. Le parc de Candie Gardens, qui domine la
rue principale High Street, est quant à lui un rare exemple
de jardin public floral de l’époque victorienne du XIXe siècle.

Guernsey
The cobbled streets are framed by a tumble of terraces
and tiered gardens and criss-crossed by worn steps and
hidden alleyways. Rising from sea level, Guernsey’s capital
sprawls towards the higher parishes of St Martins and St
Andrews, offering many vantage points from where one
can glimpse the stunning views across to Herm and Sark.
Each nook and alleyway invites exploration and there are
plenty of accredited guides to show you around during
the summer months (for information on guides go to the
Visitor Information Centre).
To the south of Town lies the Old Quarter, full of boutique
shops. Much has been done to revitalise this area in
recent years with sponsored street parties for Halloween,
Christmas and summer.
If you prefer to get away from the urban sprawl then walk
along the shoreline south to the start of the coastal path.
From there well-kept footpaths meander past a string of
quiet and remote beaches along the cliffs, with views out
to sea and the other Channel Islands.

Around and About
Au sud de la ville se trouve le vieux quartier, « Old Quarter »,
qui abonde de boutiques en tous genres. Beaucoup a été
fait pour revitaliser ce quartier au cours de ces dernières
années, avec notamment des fêtes de rue parrainées à
l’occasion de Halloween, des fêtes de Noël et en été.
Si vous préférez vous éloigner du cadre urbain, longez le
rivage en direction du sud pour vous engager sur le sentier
côtier. De là, des sentiers bien entretenus serpentent le long
du littoral et vous font découvrir toute une succession de
plages en bordure de falaises, avec des vues sur la mer et
les autres îles Anglo-normandes.

Getting Around
Driving in Guernsey is a little different than anywhere in
the world, with more than 100 miles of winding lanes
and unique traffic rules. The ‘filter in turn’ system is
noted by hatched yellow lines and requires drivers to
take turns to pass. The speed limit is 35 mph on rural
roads, 25 mph in built up areas and 15mph along Green
Lanes and Ruette Tranquilles.
Hire cars are available and there is a comprehensive
bus service. The bus terminus can be found at the south
end of Town, conveniently close to the marina and the
restaurants and shops of St Peter Port.

Se déplacer en voiture à Guernesey est une expérience
unique, avec plus de 160 km de voies sinueuses et un
code de la route à sens unique. Le système à « filtrage à
tour de rôle » est signalisé par des bandes en pointillés
jaunes qui demandent aux conducteurs de s’accorder la
priorité à tour de rôle. La limite de vitesse est de 35 mi/h

The exquisite 18th Century house has
been restored by the National Trust of

and parlour.
The shop, operating on two floors, has

sweets and souvenirs. One room has
been laid out as a Victorian period
parlour and is a taster of what can be
viewed at the National Trust’s Folk &

Saumarez Park in the western parish of Castel is
the largest public park in Guernsey and offers scenic trails
for walkers.

visiting yachtsmen. On the west coast you can grab a free
buoy at Havre Gosselin and pull your dinghy up the steps
– but beware the fall of tide. From there it is a 15 minute
walk to the village or Le Petit Champ.
On the east La Greve de la Ville also offers complimentary
mooring spots. Dinghies can be left on the beach before
a brisk walk up the hill after which the village is only ten

Guernsey, Herm is often described as a magical place. It
weaves its relaxing spell as soon as you set foot on its
shores, replacing the stresses of modern living with a carfree, pollution-free environment.
At high tide boats arrive at the harbour overlooked by
the White House, Herm’s most prestigious restaurant
and hotel, while at low tide vessels moor up to Rosaire
Steps a little further south. From there a good pair of
shoes is recommended to take advantage of the walking
opportunities.
For such a small place, there is a lot to see and do. History
buffs might be interested in the Neolithic tombs, the 10th
century St Tugual’s Chapel or the oxen shoeing stocks that
date back to the residency of the Trappist monks in the
1800s. In fact, the name ‘Herm’ is supposedly derived from
the hermits that settled there in the Middle Ages.
What Herm is best known for however, is the white sandy
beaches in the north of the island. Shell Beach and Belvoir
Bay are fantastic spots to go crabbing, snorkelling or just
relax in a deck chair with a good book. The turquoise water
is crystal clear and beach side stalls sell fresh sandwiches
and Herm ice cream.

return relaxed and rejuvenated.

les années 1800. D’ailleurs, le nom de « Herm » proviendrait
du terme ermites, qui s’y installèrent au Moyen Age.
Toutefois, ce qui fait la renommée d’Herm, ce sont ses
plages de sable blanc au nord de l’île. Shell Beach et Belvoir
Bay sont des endroits fantastiques pour aller pêcher
le crabe, faire de la plongée au tuba ou simplement se
détendre dans une chaise longue avec un bon livre. Les
eaux turquoise sont d’une limpidité cristalline et les étals
en bord de mer vendent des sandwichs frais et de la crème
glacée d’Herm.
Le véritable magie tient au fait que, quelle que soit la durée
de votre séjour, vous repartez immanquablement détendu

St Peter Port Lifeboat - Guernsey

The Guernsey Lifeboat Station is one of only four in the Channel
Islands. Operating for over 200 years, the crews of the Guernsey
lifeboats have been honoured with several awards for gallantry.
The Station has seen a variety of Lifeboats over the years and
the current lifeboat is the Severn class ‘Spirit of Guernsey’.
The island has always been proud to support the Lifeboat
Station and crews; in 1973 a special appeal raised a
considerable sum towards the cost of the Arun Class
‘Sir William Arnold’.
Twenty years later an appeal was launched to raise £1 million
to support the building of ‘Spirit of Guernsey’. Thanks to the
generosity of friends in Guernsey, Sark, Herm and further afield,
the target was achieved within one year.

its inhabitants were evacuated during World War II.
Sixty-two miles from the Isle of Wight and the most
northern of the Channel Islands, the island is often the
first port of call for many yachtsmen arriving from the UK.
Braye is the only harbour, and from there it is a 15 minute
walk to St Anne, where cobbled streets take you to a
fine church and the imposing island hall (formerly the
Governor’s residence). Further meandering will take you
to the Channel Islands’ only working railway and coastal
fortresses.
With seven beaches to choose from, all with their own
charm, there are plenty of places to soak up the sun or
paddle in waves. Wildlife is bountiful, especially for birdwatchers who might catch sight of colonies of puffins,
fulmars or gannets, for which the island is particularly well
known. There are approximately 7,000 pairs of gannets
nesting on the two gannetries at Ortac and Les Etacs.
Perhaps the least discovered of the Channel Islands,
Alderney is a beautiful destination.

poursuivez votre découverte de l’île, vous ne manquerez pas
de tomber sur l’unique chemin de fer en exploitation des Îles
Anglo-normandes et de nombreuses forteresses côtières.
Avec un choix de sept plages, qui toutes ont leur charme
propre, vous ne manquerez pas d’endroits pour y prendre
des bains de soleil ou profiter de la mer. La faune y est
abondante, tout particulièrement pour les ornithologues
amateurs qui, avec un peu de chance, pourraient tomber
