Pass the Gromperekichelcher: impact investing, Luxembourg style justmeans.com, 04/08/11 http://www.justmeans.com/Pass-Gromperekichelcher-Impact-Investing-Luxembourg-Style/48986.html “Luxembourg became a pioneer in impact investing with the creation of the first fully commercial investment fund dedicated to microfinance, the Dexia Micro-Credit Fund,” said Cédric Lombard, a co-founder of the DMCF manager BlueOrchard and also the sustainable finance firm Impact Finance Management, both based in Geneva, via email. Today, Luxembourg counts with a label for microfinance funds and 17 labeled funds holding some USD 2.8 billion. mediawatch 2 - 16 august 2011 Tuesday, 2 - 16 August, 2011 2 3 FINANCIAL CENTRES MONITORING Switzerland: Was bedeutet die Garantiezahlung an Deutschland? Switzerland and Germany initial tax agreement Confédération Suisse, 10/08/11 http://www.efd.admin.ch/aktuell/medieninformation/00462/index.html?lang=en&msg-id=40533 August 10, in Bern, German and Swiss negotiators concluded the negotiations on outstanding tax issues and initialled a tax agreement. Under this agreement, persons resident in Germany can retrospectively tax their existing banking relationships in Switzerland either by making a one-off tax payment or by disclosing their accounts. Future investment income and capital gains of German bank clients in Switzerland will be subject to a final withholding tax, and the proceeds of this will be transferred to the German authorities by Switzerland. In addition, mutual market access for financial services will be improved. The agreement should be signed by both governments in the next few weeks and could enter into force at the start of 2013. UAE: Abu Dhabi’s quiet financial centre gulfnews.com, 05/08/11 http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/general/abu-dhabi-s-quiet-financial-centre-1.847412 Bainounah Street in Abu Dhabi has an understated appeal that almost conveys a sense of detachment from its importance as a seat of critical executive and financial decisions. Tree-lined boulevards and shady rest areas are everywhere but there are few commercial establishments because of security considerations around the precincts. Those who experience the calm and congestion-free atmosphere, however, have few complaints. Brazil: Selling to São Paulo The Telegraph, 16/08/11 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/businessclub/8703772/Selling-to-Sao-Paulo.html São Paulo is a place of commerce and finance, of crazed taxi drivers, over-crowded airports and throbbing traffic jams. The congestion is unsurprising given that São Paulo is the largest city in the southern hemisphere – with a population of around 12m or 23m depending on where you draw the boundary line. São Paulo is the country’s financial centre – the heart of south east Brazil’s industrial belt that also takes in Rio de Janeiro, with its tourism and oil industry.
