Automated component placement with image processing and a highly precise axis system eliminates user induced misplacements. With the use of the Ersa HR 600 Hybrid Rework System for reworking board assemblies, the generation up to 1 ton of electronic waste per system can be avoided. The challenge of sustainability: A manual and not reproducible rework process is always associated with high risk. Only when employing highly skilled personnel is it possible to avoid generating scrap. To recover the residual value of defective assemblies and to minimize the volume of electronic waste, safe and repeatable rework processes are required. Only automated component placement and controlled, automated desoldering and soldering processes are able to achieve the desired high yield during rework, while lowering the deployment of personnel. VDMA_Handout_REWORK.indd 3 The Initial Situation: Manually operated and not controlled process steps in the rework of assemblies inevitably lead to a high failure rate and, subsequently, to substantial numbers of scrapped assemblies. These scrapped assemblies are removed from the process to recover their value. And in addition, electrical energy is being wasted during these uncontrolled processes. To overcome this situation, many manufacturers in the field of electronics have extensively trained and qualified their personnel. As well, manufacturers of rework equipment have realized that uncontrolled and manual operated systems do not represent the optimum solution. 16.10.2013 17:26:41 The Solution – technology incorporating sustainability: Following the tradition of the Ersa Rework Systems, their selective and highly efficient heating technology was further developed and refined, and, with the present system HR 600, a unit was brought to market that combines automated desoldering and soldering with the fully automated component placement function. The HR 600 offers a hybrid heating head which delivers the energy required for the solder process very accurately to the intended target on the assembly. The five switchable heating zones of the unit assure that only the minimum amount of energy required for the application at hand is applied. A closed looped temperature control system ensures that the defined process is being precisely adhered. The automatic component placement is executed by an image processing feature and a highly accurate axis system. Misplacements due to operator error are therefore eliminated. Sustainable Strength: The benefit for a user when working with the HR 600 Rework system lies in the fact that even operators with little experience can achieve excellent results within a short period of time and with limited training. The operator is relieved of the strenuous task of correct placing of the component. VDMA_Handout_REWORK.indd 4 And since many of the process steps executed by the system are automated - thereby assuring a safe process - the operator is in the position to perform additional tasks. Applying fewer resources than in the case of a manual system is, marked improvements in the yield of the rework process are achieved. Installing an automated rework system enables users with volumes up to a few thousand assemblies per year to economically rework boards, significantly reducing the amount of electronic waste generated.
