Jochen Meister Andreas Kuhnlein – Images of humanity The airport is the gateway to the world. People who soar into the sky, landing here from all over and taking off for destinations everywhere, make the airport a special place. Its invisible pathways connect it to the entire world – at a relentless, rapid pace. Its purpose is the modern, mobile human being. Human beings are the theme of the sculptor Andreas Kuhnlein. His figures are seen from today's standpoint, but their gestures are timeless. They are representatives of what is essentially human, created by an artist who is not satisfied with what is merely superficial. As material Kuhnlein uses the solid tree trunk, and as his starting point his experience of life and his love for his theme, his material and his work. Wood as a repository of life becomes an analogy of what it is to be human. Kuhnlein uses large tree trunks, full of character, that died through natural processes. He awakens them to new, human-like life, shaping the figure from grown wood, with the saw "drawing" life. No surface distracts the gaze from the substance of the work. Its expressive statement gets under one's skin in the true sense of the expression. Because the modern, mobile human being is first and foremost: a human being who feels, loves and suffers.
