MEDIOMUNDO arquitectos Marta Pelegrín +Fernando Pérez Report
1 MEDIOMUNDO arquitectos Marta Pelegrín +Fernando Pérez Report. AIR Krems – June and July 2016 Marta Pelegrin MEDIOMUNDO arquitectos is an architecture practice lead by MARTA PELEGRIN FERNANDO PÉREZ based in Seville ( Spain). We got the DAY-LIGHT PRIZE 2014 awarding the Building "Health Science Faculty (Granada)" designed and built by us. The Day-Light Prize 2014 is given by the Department of Construction and Environment from the Donau University every two years. It consists in sharing a 60-90 days at AIR–RESIDENCY in Krems an der Donau, due to the cooperation between Donau University, ORTE Architekturnetzwerk Niederösterreich, and AIR Residenz Krems. We at MEDIOMUNDO arquitectos have seen it as an incredible opportunity to stay in Austria and contribute to enhancing the architectural, both academic and professional, relationship between both countries and both Universities. We enjoyed therefore the AIR-Residence, because it makes possible to link institutions related to architecture like ORTE (Architekturnetzwerk Nierderösterreich), AZW (Architekturzentrum in Wien) and HDA (Haus der Architektur in Graz), as well as others related to Arts and Literature, such as Kunsthalle Krems and Cervantes Institut, as well as enables new forms of cooperation together with MEDIOMUNDO. Marta Pelegrín spent a 60days academical research residence from 1.06.2016 to 31.07.2016, researching and sharing several activities at the AIR–RESIDENCY as well as at Donau University in Krems, Architektur Zentrum in Wien and TU Graz ( Professor Dpl. Arch Riewe). Marta Pelegrin 2016 June July AIR-residence Report Krems Austria MEDIOMUNDO arquitectos Marta Pelegrín +Fernando Pérez 2 We were invited to present our architectural work at MEDIOMUNDO arquitectos, in a lecture at the INSTITUTO CERVANTES in Vienna (Austria) hold on 23.06.2016 as result of cooperation among ORTE Architekturnetzwerk Niederösterreich with Instituto Cervantes and AIR-Programm des Landes Niederösterreich. We also presented our Exhibition Program “Architecture Set: Everyday Life Prepositions” that took place in Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (Seville, 2014), Escola das Artes Dpto de Arquitectura (Evora 2015) and Centro Cultural Cibeles (Madrid 2016), to the future Director of the Architekturzentrum Wien, Angelika Fitz, to the Director of the House of Architecture Graz, Markus Bogensberger and mailed it to Arno Ritter, Director of AUT in Innsbruck, in order to propose a possible future program of architecture ( exhibition, conferences and workshops) that relates the two countries: Austria and Spain ‘s practicing contemporary architecture in a very pragmatic, experimental, challenging and also down to earth way. Myself, Marta Pelegrin, have fulfilled a continuous development of my PH Dissertation about Architecture Practices At The Turn of the Century (directors Prof. Arch. Dr. José Morales Sánchez, and Prof. Arch. Dr. Fco González de Canales), linked to the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura and the research Grup HUM-666 from the University of Seville. I have continued my research at several institutions, visiting relevant buildings and places together with other colleges. Those case ‘studies in Niederösterreich, Steiermark and Wien, have been very relevant references to work out a critical point of view, focusing on their theoretical and design statements, and how they have been constructed and how they are currently used. I have had the opportunity to consult directly the AZW and TU Wien library, the original founds and archives about the related architects, to whom I also have made interviews’, to ask and discuss the relevant Wendepunkt, turning point, that have taken place in Architecture at the early 90´s in Austria. I’ve Marta Pelegrin 2016 June July AIR-residence Report Krems Austria MEDIOMUNDO arquitectos Marta Pelegrín +Fernando Pérez 3 researched examples and case studies discussed by relevant architects and critics, that show a pragmatic, experimental, user-based, low-tech and economical architecture samples, some humble but also significant buildings and architectural designs, that share common aspects together with some architectures made in Switzerland, Germany, Spain, France, also on that time. I went through the work of relevant -for that moment- architects such as Adolf Kristchanitz’s temporary pavilions, Hubert&Vass international and local projects, Eichinger oder knechtl interior designs, Henke and Schreiek and ARTEC initial works, focusing finally the research on Riegler&Riewe architecture in Austria. For that, I spent also some days in Graz at the TU Graz Institut für Architekturtechnologie, consulting the directly the TU Graz Library, visiting the to my investigation- related buildings, and conducting an Interview to Univ.Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Architekt Roger Riewe. I have also consulted original documents in the office´s archives focusing on their works (designs, buildings and exhibitions), and on their construction approach and design technics. I also fulfilled different academicals activities such as sharing with us the Final Critics from the Students at Sommer Semester Master Units Projects at Institut für Architekturtechnologie, TU Graz, on 29.06.2016 together Boštjan Vuga (guest professor TU in Berlin 2013, Sadar &Vuga architects, Ljubljana), with Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Architekt Roger Riewe, and the related department´ assistants. From the very beginning of my stay, I shared the activities proposed by the ORTE Organization as well as Air Residendece, among others I want to highlight: ORTE Architekturtage 3/06/2016). The Niederösterreich subjetc Architecture „wert/haltung … Days was (2/06/2016- wir uns leisten“(value/manteinance…what we can afford), conducted by Heidrun Schlögl and Reinhard Seiss. The Architecture Days focuses on Krems, we visited current projects, buildings and discussed on subjects that are important for the whole province, related to the architectural, economical, and social dimension of the current planning and architectural approach. Marta Pelegrin 2016 June July AIR-residence Report Krems Austria MEDIOMUNDO arquitectos Marta Pelegrín +Fernando Pérez 4 In Vienna, together with the AIR Residenz And Kunstalle exhibition "Formkunst Belvedere " together, and we went to the gallery das weisse haus to see their current exhibition guidend by the curators, Alexandra Grausam, and some artists. das weisse haus is an art association, exhibition space and non-profitorganization for the promotion and presentation of young art that also has artist in residence. We shared a nice evening grill at their Augartenstrasse Studiodwh. I also shared at the Opening the Europa Beste Bauten Exhibition at the AZW, Mies van Der Rohe 2016 Award, at the presentation lecture by Dietmar Steiner, Anna Ramos, director of the Foundation e Ivan Blasi, designer of the Exhibition. I also had the opportunity to see the Josef Frank Exhibition “Against Design” at the MAK (Vienna) with and incredible spread out of original documents, related to all his fruitful work, about early houses (Haus Wien, 1914, Haus Beer, 1929/30) and Social Housing studies ( Volkswohnungspalast,1926) the beautiful color paintings about Leon Battista Alberti Studies, as well as furniture and Swedish designs (together with his wife, Estrid Ericson at Sveskt Tenn), carpets and fabric decorations, … I would highlight his Accidentismus (philosophy der glücklischen Zufälle) reflections on living and as a way to design. I also had the opportunity to visit Frederic Kiesler Exhibition “Life Visions” at the MAK ( Vienna) and the related Symposium (Dieter Bogner & Maria Lind, curators of the exhibition, and Benedetta Tagliabue, Hani Rashid), in which there was highlighted the transdisciplinary and self-consciousness avant-garde attitude of Kiesler (surrounded by Wagner, Hoffman and Loos in Wien, but also linked to the north American Scene up from 1926). I would also highlight the nice set of original Documents and reproductions (Leger- und Träger System, Cite Spaciale Paris 1925, or Raumbühne, among others) and some explanations to his Correalismus Theory (1937) on living and as a way to design. I think, the highlighting from MAK of this two personalities -Kiesler and Frank-, by means of exhibiting exclusive and interesting material and documents, as well as offering this two architectonic characters as a ‘brand topic’ in the Marta Pelegrin 2016 June July AIR-residence Report Krems Austria MEDIOMUNDO arquitectos Marta Pelegrín +Fernando Pérez 5 industrial cultures deservers a further reflection, within the curatorial and exhibition practices. It was nice to be situated in Krems because we could live quite an active cultural atmosphere, in addition to that in Vienna. I visited the Kunsthalle Krems, to see the Stefan Sadner “Colors” Exhibition, and the “Abstract Spatial “ Exhibition curated by Verena Gamper, and we saw them guided by her shortly before the Museum closes (19.06.2016) because of Kunst Halle New Building and the Interventions of the by Marte.Marte in the comings years. The changes in Krems-city but also in the Art Scene in Krems that are coming up because of the New KunstHalle is somtehing that deserves a further follow-up work. We also were at the Minoritenplatz complex at the Klangraum Krems Kapitelsaal (Rubén D’Hers. Quebrada Escondida, and Klangraum Krems Minoritenkirche (Jeroen Vandesande. Circuit03). The visit together with other artists in Residence the “Contemporary Archives” at the Donau-Uni Krems, (Krischanitz, 2009) was also an interesting kick-off point for further debates among us AIR-residents about archive, work of art, space, museum, etc… I have been knowing the Wachau Valley (Krems, Stein, Aggsdorf Kartausen, Willendorf, Emmersdof, Joching, Melk..) and St. Pölten in Lower Austria,, and visiting the Hight Water Intervention Projects guided by the architects that haver designed some of them, among which I would like to highlight the Urban design and High water strategy from Arch. Karl Langer Intervention in Melk and Oberanstdorf. Finnaly we also went together to the Glatt & Verkerht festival’s Carlos Malta ( also Artist in residence) session. We would also like to thanks to: Heidrun Schlögl from ORTE Architecture Network in Lower Austria, she helped and encouraged us and also gave us the needed contacts (AZW Wien, Angelika Marta Pelegrin 2016 June July AIR-residence Report Krems Austria MEDIOMUNDO arquitectos Marta Pelegrín +Fernando Pérez 6 Fitz; HDG, Markus Bogensberger; AUT, Arno Ritter, among others) and organized the Lecture at the Instituto Cervantes, as well as Manfred Schimek. They have been a great support.
