Interview
« Frank
Gallagher est
une Desperate
Housewife»
Mon travail a consisté à trouver pourquoi
J’adore Frank Gallagher.

MACY LIBERATED BY PLAYING
CONTROVERSIAL CHARACTER
SHAMELESS STAR UNWORRIED
ABOUT AUDIENCE REACTION
TO FRANK GALLAGHER
Shameless star William H Macy has not only created an
unforgettable and timeless character in the perma-drunk Frank
Gallagher, he has also transformed himself and seems to have
become ten years younger: “I like this look and so so the chicks
in my family, but one thing I’d really like to ask the women in the
room here is, how do you keep it out of your eyes?”
Macy has also admitted that some of Frank’s behaviour is based
on his mother who, in Macy’s own words ‘liked to drink’: “One thing
I do in the show quite regularly is to hold off on lines so that I can
pull faces. My Mum’s face would often speak volumes before she
had said a single word,” he said. “There has been some criticism
of the show saying that alcoholism is not funny, but drunk people
can do very funny things. And the fact is that we set out to make
a show that truthfully reflects the life of a marginalised and poor
family living in conditions that are common where the kids have to
raise themselves.”
Macy also admitted that making Frank likeable would be very hard:
“I never set out to do that,” he said. “And to be honest it is very
liberating to not care if you come across as a good or a bad guy.
My job is to find out why Frank does what he does, and maybe in
series two we’ll discover more about that. What I can say is that I
am writing episode 6 of the next series with my partner.”
Despite the controversy, Macy believes he has an amazing role:
“it’s the best role in Hollywood. In playing a character like Frank,
I effectively have a license to kill,” he said. “And don’t tell the
producers, but I would pay to play a role like that.”

FAMILY VALUES
Meet The Prichetts
The family tree of this “Modern Family”
looks like this... Patriarch Jay Pritchett
(Ed O’Neill), is divorced but recently
wed to a much younger, sexy Colombian
woman, Gloria (Sofía Vergara); and to
some extent her young son, the overlymature Manny (Rico Rodriguez).
© 2010 American Broadcasting Company. All rights reserved.
However, Jay also has two grown children
from his previous marriage: Claire (Julie
Bowen), who is now a “Dunphy” and
has three children of her own with goofy
husband Phil (Ty Burrell) – the popular
Haley (Sarah Hyland ), brainiac Alex (Ariel
Winter ), and clueless Luke (Nolan Gould).
And then there is Jay’s gay son, Mitchell
(Jesse Tyler Ferguson), who lives with his
partner Cameron (Eric Stonestreet), and
their adopted a Vietnamese baby, Lily.
And it is Jay’s son, one half of America’s #1
“gay couple” that will represent the show
in Monaco this week -- Jesse Tyler
Ferguson (sadly, Cameron has
to stay home with Lily).
The writer-producers,
Christopher
Lloyd
and Steven Levitan,
weave the show’s
stories
out
of
various tales of
their own “modern
families”, as well as
those of the cast. For
example, Jesse Tyler
Ferguson
revealed
that
his
character
Mitchell’s running joke
about how Jay (Ed O’Neill),
kept “forgetting” his son is gay,
is rooted in Ferguson’s real life. In reality,
Jesse had to come out to his father three
times over many years before his father
actually believed him. Sometimes truth is
stranger than fiction.
Shot in a mockumentary”fashion (a la “The
Office”), the show won instant acclaim in
its first season – nominated for the 2010
Screen Actors Guild Award for Best
Comedy Series Ensemble.
“Not since ‘Frasier’ has a sitcom offered
such an ideal blend of heart and smarts,”
considered Robert Bianco, the USA Today
TV critic, “or proven itself so effortlessly
adept at so many comic variations, from
subtle wordplay to big-laugh slapstick to
everything in between.” He later added:
“As good as it was in its first year, it is even
better in its second.”
Jesse Tyler Ferguson made the decision to
become an actor when he was eight years
old, and soon after joined the Albuquerque
Children’s Theater, where he remained a
member for six years. After graduating high
school, he moved to New York to attend the
American Musical and Dramatic Academy
and began performing in Broadway and offBroadway productions, the most notable
of which were the critically-acclaimed,
Tony Award-winning Broadway musical,
“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling
Bee”. No stranger to television, Ferguson
received rave reviews and was honored by
The Hollywood Reporter in 2006 as one of
‘Ten to Watch’ for his role on the ensemble
sitcom, “The Class.” Additional television
credits include “Do Not Disturb” and “Ugly
Betty.”
For his work on ‘Modern Family,’ Ferguson
was nominated for an Emmy Award
for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a
Comedy Series and also received a Screen
Actors Guild Award nomination (2010) for
Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble
in a Comedy Series.
The funny truth about America’s #1 gay
couple is that Stonestreet is straight, and
Ferguson is not. In fact, Ferguson jokingly
calls Stonestreet... “gay-for-pay.”

DIDJA KNOW?
“Parenthood” is based on
the 1989 movie of the same
name. The first attempt at a
TV version was in 1990 when
one of the kids was a then
unknown Leonardo DiCaprio.
Representing ”Parenthood” at the festival is Bonnie Bedelia. She plays Camille, the matriarch of the
Braverman clan. After starting out as a teenage member of the Porter clan in the ‘60s soap opera,
“Love of Life,” she took her first Broadway bow in “Isle of Children” with Patty Duke. Following that,
she appeared in “My Sweet Charlie,” and her touching performance in the play garnered her a Theatre
World Award for ‘promising new artist.’ (Paradoxically, Duke recreated her role in the TV version).
Having conquered the small screen and stage, Bonnie set her sights on the big screen. She played
Bruce Willis’ wife in the “Die Hard” franchise, starred opposite Harrison Ford in “Presumed Innocent”
and opposite Fred Ward in “The Prince of Pennsylvania.” She also received critical acclaim, and a
Golden Globe nomination, for her role as race car driver Shirley Muldowney in “Heart Like A Wheel.”
Bonnie has also filmed two Stephen King books and starred in one of the few honest appraisals of
the life and work of U.S. policewomen during 88 hours of the drama series, “The Division.”

Families make the world go
‘round…particularly in the world of
entertainment. Through television,
we’ve watched them all - from the

of London’s East End; the Texan

the Cunninghams.
There was once an American TV
show called “The Royal Family” while
Britain had a sitcom based on the
Royle family. More recently, one of
the most notable TV families has been
Sally Field’s Walker clan on “Brothers

the Bravermans from “Parenthood”!
The three generations of the Braverman
family tree can be described as this:
Craig T. Nelson (Zeek) and Bonnie

two sons and two daughters, each
of whom have their own families. All

TV XCHANGES PUT THE ART OF 3D UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT IN THE SALLE VAN DONGEN
Script Development for Creative Stereoscopy will kick-off today’s TV
Xchanges program at 10.30. The round table is organised with the
participation of the Media Consulting Group. The conference will start
with a quick overview of the history of thinking in depth, exploring
the ways in which filmmakers have responded to new formats from
earlier periods of 3D production, and laying the foundation for current
challenges in S-3D script-writing. Discussions will focus on technical
opportunities in thematic development and scenic construction.
Alongside that, case studies will identify the genres and effects that can
be implemented in stereoscopic storytelling, as well as the constraints
and limitations creative personnel will have to cope with. Taking part are
Ian Christie of Birkbeck College London, Michael Eaton, Screenwriter
and Christian Lelong of Cinedoc. The afternoon session - Producing
and Directing in 3D Stereoscopy - will address the subjects of direction,
production and post-production, the limits of human vision, the
stereoscopic window, the influence of the size of the screen and the
importance of camera movements. There will also be a discussion about
what sorts of content style and story fit S-3D best, and a presentation
of the tools and techniques for shooting in 3D. A segment of the round
table will also be taking a look at the process of releasing a production
to television, including the current state of the implementation of
quality standards, the most recent developments in the market and
the how much TV channels are likely to need 3D content. Participating
in the session are Pascal Charpentier, Motion Designer S-3D, Stewart
Dickison of Sony, Jérôme Kanapa, of CIFAP, and Arnaud Pasquali, of the
European Community’s Media Programme.

Counterintelligence
Fore....!
Chances are we may not see very much of “Criminal Minds”
star Thomas Gibson in Monaco this week. Because he has
a thing about golf. He’s extremely keen on the game. He’s
also extremely good at it. He plays in the AT&T Pebble
Beach National Pro-Am every year and is pally with top
golfer Corey Pavin.
Married, with three children (two sons and a daughter), Gibson
lives in San Antonio, Texas, home town of his wife, Cristina. He
was born in Charleston, South Carolina and actually started
acting at age ten - in children’s theatre. No game for him. He
took it as seriously as he was to take golf.
Golfers tend to recognise other golfers, whatever their
profession, and it’s obvious that after his numerous visits to the
festival, that Dennis Haysbert will have spread the word among
the cognoscenti of the greens about the beauties - and the
pitfalls - of the the superlative course overlooking Monaco, just
over the French border at Mont Agel. When not playing God’s
game - as some devotees call it - Gibson has been portraying
the often tragic trajectory of Aaron “Hotch” Hotchner , head of
the BAU team - the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit in Quantico,
Virginia - in 135 episodes during the last six years.
We’ve seen him up and and we’ve seen him down... Divorced
by his wife, who is later slain by the serial killer known as The
Reaper, who also attacked Hotch. Hardly surprising then that
such happenings led to him being replaced by Shemar Moore’s
Supervisory Special Agent Derek Morgan for a spell. Hotch has
been back in charge since the killing of the grim Reaper. In
actual fact, the tall Gibson has been in charge of the whole
show for some time now, the one steadyhand, surehand during
all the comings and goings on the show. All this dark criminality
is a radical switch from Gibson’s previous hit series. He was half
of the married opposites, “Dharma & Greg,” with Jenna Elfman.
And before that, he starred in two other important series: “Tales
of the City,” from Armistead Maupin’s book, and as Dr. Danny
Nyland in “Chicago Hope.”

The Gube Cometh
The Gube’s in town. Matthew Gray Gubler, aka
the super-geek Dr. Spencer Reid of “Criminal
Minds” for six years (and two chiefs) with one
more to go. Another year, that is, not another
chief. Well, iin TV, one never knows...
Reid is part of Joe Mantegna’s team of elite
profilers from the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit
(BAU) at Quantico, Virginia. He is a genuine wiz.
A living, breathing (but why working for the FBI?)
genius... with PhDs in Mathematics, Chemistry,
Engineering, BAs in Psychology and Sociology,
and chasing another in philosophy. He also
has eidetic memory, able to recall a huge
amount of information - like the Swedish
“Millennium” heroine, Lisbeth Salander.
His work led to a serious drug problem,
after he was kidnapped, tortured and
drugged by a multiple personality
serial killer. Dr. Reid’s then boss
(Mandy Pantinkin) and colleague
“Hotch” (Thomas Gibson) helped
him through it. Like his role,
Matthew was also born, bred,
educated in Las Vegas - where
his maternal grandparents founded KENO, the
town’s first radio station. He was in film school
in New York when he was noticed and became
a DNA Model for Tommy Hilfiger, Marc Jacobs,
etc. In 2002, he majored in film directing at NYU’s
Tisch School of the Arts and has since directed
several shorts: “The Cactus That Looked Just
Like a Man,” “Claude: A Symphony of Horror”
and (behind the pseudonym Strudel Goolar)
his improvised You Tube series. “I’m incredibly
proud of those.”
He also uses hidden cameras, so watch out in
Monaco or you, too, could wind up on “Matthew
Gray Gubler: The Unauthorized Documentary.”
Oh, no that’s done. Now he’s into “The
Authorized Version”...
He didn’t stop there. With an indefatigability
reminiscent of the young David Hemmings (not
to mention James Franco), The Gube is also a
sketch artist, painter, photographer, webmastergeneral (he has a hand-written website: www.
matthewgraygubler.com - “gublerland is loading,
whistle while you wait”) and, the last we heard,
an aspiring children’s author and illustrator. TC

WORLD ACTRESS
Felicity Huffman
accent français prononcé qu’elle imita parfaitement « On the show,
you’re fat and ugly ! But in real life, you’re beautiful ! ».
VB / CH
mes filles ! ».
FELICITY HUFFMAN
ON LYNETTE SCAVO
When asked about the similarities between herself and Lynette Scavo
of Desperate Housewives, Felicity Huffman revealed that she finds
being a mother quite challenging: “I think we both feel a little bit
buried by the whole motherhood thing,” she said. “And we are both
ambitious. On the other hand I think Lynette is tougher on her husband
than I am.” Earlier in the day, her husband William Macy had told
journalists at the Grimaldi Forum that she was an amazing Mother.
When this was mentioned to her, she returned the compliment: “You
could not wish for a better Dad than Bill, he’s very good at holding
everything together, he’s the root of the family,” she said.
In terns of what Huffman does in the rare periods when she isn’t
working, she admitted to being ‘quite boring’: “I’d like to say that
I hang-glide and attempt to save the planet, but in fact, alongside
taking the kids to school, shopping and picking up the dry-cleaning,
I like to run, I love my garden and I enjoy reading in bed. I’m currently
reading a book by William Manchester, which makes me sound
terribly smart, but I like everything from historical stuff through to
Danielle Steel.”
Desperate Housewives first became famous for being a show that
made woman in their 40s look sexy and viable, something for which
Huffman is very grateful: “It really changed Hollywood in that as an
actress you used to fall off a cliff around the age of 40, but now it’s 50
and I’m not far away from that,” she said. “Whether playing Lynette
has been the role of a lifetime is very hard to say, but certain story
lines really stick in my mind. In the last series, when me and Tom
were on the verge of splitting up, it took me out of my comfort zone,
even if it was only my TV husband played by Doug Savant.”

SUPER SOAP
Ever Young,
XXXX
Ever Restless
This year, “The Young & the Restless” is represented here by
members of the Abbott, Baldwin and Ashby clans… one of
whom is reported dead in a current cliff-hanger!
Hunky Australian, Daniel Goddard who has played Cane
Ashby since 2007, will be walking the red carpet alongside
glamorous soap beauty Tracey E. Bregman who has played
Lauren Fenmore Baldwin for more than 748 episodes as well
as Judith Chapman, the legendary soap actress.
Judith Chapman is the terrific Cruella DeVille of soaps. She has
recently completed her 663rd episode as Gloria Fisher Abbott
Bardwell in “The Young & the Restless.” Judith spoke exclusively
to Televisual Magazine saying “I’m very excited about re-visiting
one of the most glamorous capitals, et, aussi, tout la cote d’Azur...
speaking with the Press and the fans... and getting their reactions
to this show. En francais, si je peux. I’ve lived in England and
Spain, worked in Spain and have family in Europe. It’s like visiting
home. I have seen our show in Italian, and look forward to seeing
it in French. I think the voices are fabulous! I’d love to meet these
actors. It is such an honour!”
“She’s the girl who came from nothing, and raised two sons alone.”
says Judith. “She is always involved with the wrong men, until John
Abbott, and has ambitions that match her natural intelligence. She
means no ill, but, very often, makes mistakes that get her into
trouble.”
And Judith reveals: “Gloria’s TV family does everything they can to
support each other and make each other laugh. But whenever she
can battle with the Abbott children - those are the best scenes.
Ahh, Gloria!”
Judith’s career has spanned many hit soaps which include “As The
World Turns” in 1956 as well as “General Hospital,” “One Life to
Live,” “Days of Our Lives,” and “Ryan’s Hope” in 1975.
Tracey E. Bergman is no stranger to Europe as she was born in
Munich and raised in London until almost eleven. “I love to go see
my friends in London and I love Italy and France. I took French
as a child and one year of Italian so, I speak this great language
called Fratalian. I can never get through one sentence without both
languages in it!” The Bregman legend says Tracey E. added the E
to her name (quite legitimately; her second name is Elizabeth) after
Tracey Bregman,
Daniel Goddard
et Judith Chapman
an astrologer suggested in 1985 that it would help her career. A
month later, Tracey moved her “Bold and Beautiful” role of Lauren
Fenmore to “Y&R” . - and won a Daytime Emmy.
“Lauren used to be a bitch with no redeeming qualities! Luckily,
through the years she has grown and changed into a heroine who
hasn’t lost her edge. I’m thrilled that we are seen around the world
and that so many people enjoy our show.” “I’m so excited to be in
beautiful Monte Carlo!, I’ve wanted to come to this event for years.
I’m looking forward to meeting all the people who will be there. To
meet the Prince and his fiancee.”
Daniel Goddard first auditioned for “Y&R» using his best US accent
but once CBS network discovered his Australian background, they
made Ethan “Cane” Ashby an Aussie bartender, “he is a workingclass kind of guy who mined opals and raised goats,” searching for
his birth family in Genoa City... who prove to be millionaire Phillip
Chancellor II and Jill Foster. He also found a Lady Chatterley-style
romance with lovely Lily. “Cane is like an onion and over the years
the layers have been peeled back to slowly reveal who he really
is - a good, loving man and fiercely loyal to his family and friends.
Even if he enjoys a fight now and then! I’m truly honoured that
we’re seen in so many countries and cultures. I’d like to take out
all the guys who dub me into their own languages and buy them a
bottomless beer.”
Already a great fan of Portugal, Daniel and his wife have been
getting to know le Midi before driving here by rented car from Nice.
“I’m a huge F1 fan and having watched the Monaco Grand Prix for
years, the first thing I did was drive through the tunnel down to the
chicane and the Piscine S-bend! Later I’m going to Germany for a
mate’s 40th birthday... and some days racing the Nürburgring!”

LE FESTIVAL SUCCOMBE
AUX « MYSTERES DE L’AMOUR »
Lakshan ABENAYAKE, Isabelle BOUYSSE, Coralie
CAULIER, Carole DECHANTRE, Patrick PUYDEBAT,
AFTER HEMINGWAY COREY STOLL
IS LOOKING FOR LAUGHS
Corey Stoll, who portrayed Detective Tomas Jaruszalski in Law & Order: L.A., has
just finished what he happily admits was a dream role with legendary director
Woody Allen. Stoll played the writer Ernest Hemingway in Allen’s Midnight In Paris:
“I know this gets said a lot and it can sound disingenuous, but really just to be
asked to the audition was an honour, and then to be offered the role was complete
and utter joy.” Stoll had no idea what he would be asked to do at the audition and
received no script in advance: “In fact it can be very liberating because very often
your first reaction is the most powerful and if then you have time to mull it over, that
reaction can be diluted,” he said.
Having finished Midnight In Paris, the actor has had several offers including
another film whose subject is still a secret, but Stoll also wants to do comedy: “It’s
a very challenging genre, and not something I’ve been involved with very much,
so I would love to land a comedy role or two,” he said. “And I would really like to
do more theatre, but it’s a big commitment in terms of time, with a typical contract
lasting six months at least, and this really isn’t the time for that.”
Working with Allen exposed Stoll to the director’s highly individual way of doing
things: “He has two quite distinct modes,” Stoll said. “Some scenes with quite a
few actors involved would be shot with a steady-cam, and nobody really knew
exactly what was happening, and even though some lines would be fluffed, he
liked that spontaneous grittiness. But then especially for my role, he really mined
down into the character, most specifically in regards to Hemingway’s particular
style of speaking. I used to read his books aloud as often as possible in order to
Gary Smith
try to make the words come alive.”

There could hardly be a better cholce in Europe for
President of the TV Series jury than Takis Candilis. As
ceo of Lagardère Entertainment in Paris, he is the #1
drama producer in France, if not all Europe.
He’s had a meteoric rise from film editor, cinematographer,
writer, producer, director, creator and television producer,
booker, buyer, instigator and distributor to heading the varied
production outlets under his umbrella at Lagardère - responsible
for more than 950 hours of programming per year.
He started out in cinema - with a prize-winning short “Le Retour
Du Prive” in 1977 - but was soon thwarted and plain bored by
how long it took to - “maybe!” - get a film off the page and into
cinemas. TV offered greater rapidity. He formed and worked for
various companies, including a memorable 90s spell in cultural
programming - opera and ballet for ZDF, Arté, BBC, NHK. He
returned to drama at Ellipse, then Hamster and TF1 - “Navarro,”
“L’instit,” “Quai N°1.” For a full decade he was head of fiction
and programmes at TFI before joining Lagardère Entertainment
in 2008 - becoming le patron within two years.
He talked to us in his ninth floor office, overlooking the River
Seine in Paris, before coming to Monte Carlo to head the TV
Series jury.
Let’s begin with the obvious: Ever headed a jury before?
No, this is the first time and I’m looking forward to it. I hope I’m
a good choice...
TV drama is your life. It used to be cinema. Why the switch?
That was a long time ago - 1982. It simply took too long - years!
- to make one movie. And I had no time. I always wanted to
make many things at the same time. So, I became a producer
and tried to make not one film but two or three films per year.
Then, I became a bigger producer and managed 20 or 25 per
year. Then, at a TV channel - it became more than 80. Now I’m
head of the 17 companies forming Lagardère Entertainment,
it’s around 135 hours - 14% of our our annual 950 hours of
programming.
If you can relax before a TV like the rest of us, what were
your favourite series recently?
“Rome” was a major shock - to all of us. Then, “The Tudors.”
And I loved “Mad Men,” “CSI,” “Oz.”
Shocked because you felt costume drama wouldn’t work
today?
But also this was, I think, the first time where, despite the historic
setting, everyone was doing what you’d expect them to be doing
today. They spoke like today. It was a contemporary show even
though dressed as in ancient Rome. Totally amazing! Plus this
was the first time we saw such a high level production quality in
a series. Cinema quality.
How close are the French to matching that quality?
That’s a very difficult question. Because I am now producing
“Borgia” and asked Tom Fontana to be the executive producer
16
and showrunner, it’s
very difficult for me to
discuss French talents.
One thing I know for
sure: such a market
didn’t use to exist in
France, but it does now,
and French writers who
learn fast, will deliver the
goods.
During your cultural
years,
you
were
one of the first Euro
producers to shoot in
High Definition. How do
you view the apparent
rising demand for 3-D
- the suject for our
Xchanges today and
tomorrow.
When I started with
HD, it was an extremely
complicated technique. We needed more lights, the cameras
were big bulky. But, yes, the results were worth it - fantastic!
Today, the cameras are smaller, much easier to handle, and you
can shoot at night with no light - incredible. Now it’s a huge
business to shoot in 3D. But shooting TV in 3D is not the same
shooting in 3D for the cinema - the screen is not the same scale.
We need to study all the differences.
You’re testing equipment, how best to utilise it?
Oh, yes. We’re use 3D already - in sports, for example. Again
that’s not the way it would be used in fiction. It’s very interesting
to understand how to do it. We have to re-invent the way to
make shots. I have in mind to make a show in 3D. I am sure than
within a few years, 3D will be the TV norm.
How much has TV drama production changed since your
Ellipse and Hamster days in the early 90s?
That was really a most fantastic time. The beginning in France of
making shows the public loved: between 1995 and 2005, French
shows were a huge success with viewers. When we started
that at Ellipse we went through a major learning process. Just
as we’re doing today with 3D. We had to understand how to
write series - there are some rules about writing good shows
for TV. How to produce and direct them... and how to launch
them. We began how to understand how to pace a show and
its characters... We were, learning, in fact, how best to speak to
people through TV drama. Then at TF1, it was the first time we
made longform shows, 90 minutes instead of the usual 52.
Inspired by BBC or USA?
Oh, the American way. For example, “Navarro” was inspired
by “Kojak.” Also at TF1, when we were not moving ahead fast
enough, I began buying formats. So we made a French version
about “The Tudors.” He said: “It’s impossible for us to do such
a show.” “But we have to, ” I said. “Any ideas?” And I said one
word. “Borgia” He said: “Wow!” And we’ve just finished shooting
the first season in April - in Prague.
Then, “The Transporter” (from the Luc Besson movie
franchise) for M6. Why is the budget higher than for “Borgia”
- 30m Euros. Due to the cars, the crashes...?
Exactly! Because of the cars, the chases, the stunts, the crashes
- and shooting in different European cities. Production starts
next month. About 80% of each episode will be shot in Toronto,
with different locations per episode - Paris, London, Moscow,
etc. Also, the fans of the movies will expect a matching high
quality of production. We can’t make this in a small way with two
cars in a corner... After all, we found the money because of the
success of the movies... so we are really obliged to match them.
Or surpass them!
Replacing Jason Statham’s hero is as difficult as changing
James Bond...
Very difficult! But we’ve found him - a great English guy called...
Chris Vance.
You certainly have a packed portfolio. Do you ever get home
at night?
Oh yes... I even have time to spend a few days in Monte Carlo.

of “Law & Order.” I tried
to buy the “CSI” format,
too; instead we bought
an Italian version and
that
became
“RIS:

And we made an
agreement with Warner

Even as the #1 TV
drama
production
company in France,
is the language quota
still a problem for
Lagardère?
It’s no longer the
problem it was. Two
years ago there were new quotas drawn up. It used to be French
language only on TF1, France Television, etc. Now there is a
special window of 10% where you can shoot in English. So I
immediately went to Canal Plus and said: “OK, now we can
make a show ln English” - and we made “Borgia.” Next, and
for the first time, the BBC came to France Television and asked:
“Can we produce something together?” They came to us at
Atlantique and we said: ‘Yes, it’s possible!’ And right now, we’re
shooting eight episodes of “Death in Paradise,” a cop show for
BBC and France 2, in Guadaloupe.
That, of course, is the major change in TV drama - coproduction. And it works far better than all those Europudding movies we used to have.
That started due to the economic crisis. Budgets were slashed
by between 10% and 20% by various networks and channels.
And yet, at the same time, they all sought a higher level of
production quality.
You say you’re in “an industry of prototypes.” Can we hear
about two of your biggest current prototypes... We have
two Borgia projects - yours and Neil Jordan’s, which is in
competition here.
Yes, there are two. But I think there is only one that is good!
[Laugh]. I’m joking!
No, you’re not. You mean it.
I mean it! [Laugh]. I think we really have the better writer.
Yes, you have some great people involved (Tom Fontana,
etc), a serious investment (22m Euros) but, strangely... no
stars!

D’Adeline Blondieau

notre existence ». C’est une femme
épanouie, calme et sereine qui se

un ouvrage sur «Yoga et grossesse».
Un ouvrage explicatif sur les différentes

GOREN
She is the new recruit to Law & Order: Criminal Intent,
but Julia Ormond, joining the 10th and final season as Dr.
Paula Severin, a police psychologist conducting mandatory
sessions with Vincent D’Onofrio’s tormented cop, is giving
nothing away. “I can’t say anything really, and as for some sort
of love interest with Vincent, wouldn’t that be an interesting
form of therapy?”
The ever-busy Ormond has also just finished filming My Week
With Marylin, featuring Michelle Williams as Marylin Monroe:
“It was really interesting to play the older actress looking at
how the business affects the younger one,” she said. “Plus
it is set in London at a pivotal moment in UK history, the
beginning of the 1950s, when the empire was falling apart
and Britain’s place in the world order was fading.”
As if that was not enough, Ormond has a further three movies
set for release over the next few months including The
Green, an independent film from the US and coming of age
film Albatross. “I think it’s far from over-dramatic to say
that the independent film sector is in trouble because it
is such a struggle to get finance and distribution,” she
said. “And then even when you do, finding more money for
the press and marketing is again very difficult.”
Despite these difficulties, Ormond is optimistic: “Online
distribution provides a real alternative to theatrical, and there
are some very clever people currently trying to work out
ways to make it work and make it pay,” she said. “And the
great thing is that these days anyone can make a film, there
are even going to be films made on phones and that’s all very
healthy for the future of film making. These days the ultimate
arbiter of what is popular is YouTube, because it’s honest

LIFE ABOARD PLANET GLEE
FLAGSHIP COMEDY MUSICAL’S THIRD
SERIES TAKING SHAPE
Ian Brennan, one of the team of
three writers behind Glee, has
been widely quoted as saying
that he initially found the idea
behind the show to be ‘hard to
rationalise’: “There seemed to be
something very un-cool about the
whole High School scenario,” he
said. “And even though I long ago
saw the positive sides of the show,
my contribution script-wise is the biting
wit. But that can’t work in isolation, the show
needs an emotional point of view as well, and then it
becomes more than a musical comedy.”
The fact of working in a team of three also gives the show
its multi-layered character: “We have found that we can
have different tones within any given episode that make
it seem like there’s more than one show happening at the
same time.” Brennan said. “Plus from week to week the
show is so vastly different because, having stumbled on
a re-vitalised genre, we have a lot of tools at our disposal,
which is perhaps why the show is perceived as being
revelatory.”
Series 3 is already being planned, and one thing for sure
is that there will be changes: “It’s senior year for a lot of
the kids, which gives us a lot to work with, looking at
what they’ll do after graduating,” he said. “So I’m very
excited about that, plus there’ll be a new character and
Sue Sylvester will be running for congress.”
Coach Sylvester is Brennan’s favourite character: “I can
identify with her cynicism,” he said. “But we have such an
amazing cast, and so many great characters that we are
obliged to rest some of them sometimes and bring others
in. Of course there is the pressure from the actors, which
makes it a very interesting challenge and a huge pleasure
working with such an amazing pool of talent.

Quote. Asked by Telerama magazine about
his filmgoing, French president Nicolas
Sarkozy quickly admitted a “passion” for “The
Tudors.” “Yes, I call that cinema.,” he added. “I
find there’s more creativity in the great AngloSaxon series like “24,” “Mad Men,” “Dexter”
or “Breaking Bad” than in certain films.”
Attaboy! Some years ago, James Gandolfini
- Tony Soprano, himself - was due to portray
Ernest Hemingway in the biopic, “Papa.”
Never happened. But it whetted his yearning to
turn producer (he calls his company, Attaboy)
and film Papa’s love story with another U.S.
correspondent during the Spanish Civil War.
Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman are now
playing them in “Hemingway & Gellhorn.” No
role for Gandolfini... too busy making “Cinema
Verite,” “Taxi-22,” and the amazing true tale of
a guy from New Jersey deciding to negotiate
with North Korea. From the book called, wait
for it... “Eating with the Enemy: How I Waged
Peace With North Korea from my BBQ Shack
in Hackensack.”
Zombies are coming... Another 2011/12
trend is the walking dead. Such as Nicholas
Hoult in “Warm Bodies”... “Zombies vs
Robots “... “Boy Scouts vs. Zombies”... a very
expensive movie called “World War Z”... and
Ryan Reynolds heading the undead cops
in “R.I.P.D.”. No one is safe. Hence, “Pride
and Prejudice and Zombies”... and even The
Beatles are zombs in “Paul Is Undead”...
The Man everyone wants. That’s
British actor Jason Isaacs - perhaps
better known to you as Lucius
Malfoy in the “Harry Potter” franchise. For the second successive year, Isaacs
had close to a dozen offers during the recent pilots season. He selected Fox’s
“Awake” for NBC. He will also produce the thriller which has more than a
touch of “ Inception.” (But of course). His cop lives in two different realities. In
one, he’s killed his son, in the other, his wife...
He also keeps busy providing voices for various video games - “Avatar,”
“Batman,” “Castlevania,” “Green Lantern,” “Napoleon,” “Spartan” - and he’s
Siddeley in the upcoming Disney toon, “Cars 2.”
The female Isaacs, by the way, is Christina Applegate. She also had about
a dozen offers and chose “Saturday Night Live” writer Emily Spivey’s new
comedy, “Up All Night.”
Separation. Mr. and Mrs. Rich from “The
Riches” are back - but separated. UK comic
and marathon runner Eddie Izzard is launching
his own untitled drama about a disgraced
congressman turned political fixer - and
the beautous Brit Minnie Driver is solving
crime in “Hail Mary.” PS Eddie Izzard is live
at the Hollywood Bowl on July 20 - not to be
missed...as used to say about Elvis
It’s 2008 and Ed Harris is John McCain and
Julianne Moore is his undoing, in “Game
Change,” set up by Tom Hanks at where
else but HBO. Lots of others are booked for
McCain folk, but all eyes will be on Julianne’s
Sarah Palin.
Carry On Carell. Wait a minute, didn’t he
quit “The Office” to spend more time with his
family...? Instead, Steve Carell is rushing from
one movie to another. “Crazy, Stupid Love”
opens soon. Then, he flies from “Good Hope
Springs,” opposite Meryl Streep no less to
headlining (and producing via his Carousel
company), “Dogs of Babel”... in which he
attempts to teach his dog to talk to explain
how his wife died. Love the pitch for the US
Adult Swim Channel’s satire, “The Heart, She
Holler” - “a soap opera about folk who ain’t
never used soap or seen an opera.”
