Wolnzach, 14. August 2006, kurz vor 14 00 Uhr: Auf Umwegen sind Fotograf Rainer Lehmann und ich durch eine Hintertüre in die Wolnzacher Festhalle gelangt. Die beiden Eingangstore werden seit den Morgenstunden belagert: Heute
wird die Hallertauer Hopfenkönigin gewählt! Über die Wahl
und das Drumherum wollen wir den Lesern der Hopfenrundschau International berichten. Uns waren wilde
Geschichten zu Ohren gekommen vom Kampf um die
Stimmplätze an den Tischen. Alles andere als zimperlich
seien die Hallertauer, wenn es darum gehe, sich das königliche Stimmrecht zu sichern. Mit den geknurrten Worten
„Geht’s, schleicht´s euch, des is meiner!” habe angeblich im
letzten Jahr ein gebrechlicher alter Mann mit gezücktem
Messer grimmig einen Platz erobert. Denn nur wer einen
Tisch hat, darf wählen: Für jeden der beiden Wahldurchgänge gibt es pro Tisch 10 Stimmzettel. Der Tischinhaber verwaltet realiter auch die Stimmzettel, erkärt uns ein Eingeweihter.
Die Wahl der Hallertauer Hopfenkönigin beruht auf Tradition. Es geht ist keine Marketing-Angelegenheit, es geht um
Herzblut. Davon konnte sich die HRI-Redaktion vor Ort
überzeugen. Mit dem „Miss-Germany”-Fieber, das in deutschen Diskotheken grassiert, hat die Wahl nichts gemein.
Teilnehmen dürfen junge Frauen, die aus einem aktiven
Hopfenbetrieb stammen. Der Hopfen soll Teil ihres Lebens
sein. Darüber hinaus müssen sie mindestens 18 Jahre alt sein
und den Mut haben, vor einem Publikum von gut und gerne
3 000 Menschen aufzutreten. Für Tracht und Schmuck gibt es
500 Euro Antrittsgeld. Die drei Bewerberinnen mit den meisten Stimmen nach dem ersten Wahldurchgang treten im
zweiten Wahldurchgang nochmals gegeneinander an. Die
Siegerin vertritt weltweit für ein Jahr das weltgrößte Hopfenanbaugebiet und Hopfenkompetenz-Zentrum, die Hallertau.
Boum ... boum ... an den beiden Rolltoren wird jetzt fordernd
getrommelt. Es ist Zeit, Position zu beziehen. Punkt 14 Uhr
werden die Tore zeitgleich hochgefahren. Das Festpersonal
zieht sich bereits hinter die sturmsicheren Tresen zurück.

Rainer Lehmann and I had to take a detour through the back door of
the festive hall in Wolnzach. The two main entrances had been
besieged since the morning: Today, they are choosing the Hop
Queen of the Hallertau! We would like to report about the election
and everything else that goes on to the readers of Hopfenrundschau
International. We had heard crazy rumours about a fight over the
votes and tables. Apparently, the people of Hallertau are anything
but demure when it comes to securing the royal right to vote. They
say that last year a frail old man with a knife in his hand had snarled “Out of the way, this one is mine!” Because only those who
have a table also have a vote: There are 10 ballots per table for each
of the two rounds of voting. The table holder also manages the ballots, an insider explains to us.
The election of the Hop Queen of the Hallertau is a tradition. This
is no marketing ploy, this is heartfelt. The editorial department of
the HRI found this out for itself. The election has nothing in common with the “Miss Germany” fever that rages in German discothèques. Young women from an active hop company are permitted
to take part. Hops are supposed to be a part of their lives. They also
have to be at least 18 years of age and have the courage to appear in
front of an audience of some 3000 people. The applicants receive
500 euros each for costume and jewellery. After the first round of
votes, the three applicants with the most votes compete once again
in a second round of elections. The winner will internationally
represent the world’s largest hop growing region and hop competence centre in Hallertau for one year.
Boom ... boom .... urgent drumming can be heard emerging from
the two roll-up gates. The time has come to take up position. At 2
o’clock on the dot, the two gates are rolled up simultaneously. The
event staff retreat behind the bar to safety. Photographer Lehmann
screws a big lens onto his Nikon. Tense silence in the hall, more
hammering on the gates. Service manager Michaela Eibel hurries
over, worried about our safety. “Better not stand here; they once
ran over the mayor,” she said, adding “and he is a little bigger and
heavier than you!” Although Lehmann has plenty of combat expe-

2) In Anwesenheit von regierenden Königinnen und „befreundetem Adel“
finden die Wahlen statt. The elections take place in the presence of the reigning
Queens and their “aristocratic” friends.
Fotograf Lehmann schraubt ein fettes Objektiv auf die Nikon.
Gespannte Stille in der Halle, verstärktes Trommeln an den
Toren. Serviceleiterin Michaela Eibel kommt herbei geeilt,
besorgt um unsere Sicherheit. „Hier besser nicht, da haben’s
den Herrn Bürgermeister schon einmal umgerannt“, meint sie
und fügt hinzu „und der ist ein bisserl größer und schwerer als
Sie!” Lehmann hat zwar Kampferfahrung als Pressefotograf –
ob Bundeskanzler oder Papst, in die erste Reihe hat er es immer
geschafft – aber ob der kriegerischen Rufe, die nach drinnen
dringen, zieht auch er sich aus der Frontalen zurück. Auf einen
Tisch. Vorsichtshalber, nur wegen der Ausrüstung, meint er.
Neben jedes Tor stellt sich nun ein Mann, Hand auf den Schalter. Punkt 14 Uhr beginnt der Countdown. Bei Null setzen sich
beide Tore schnarrend und quietschend in Bewegung. Die Rollladen bewegen sich langsam, doch von außen wird sofort
gewaltsam geschoben und gequetscht, sobald ein Spalt entsteht, rollen sich die ersten Fans unter den Toren durch,
springen auf die Füße und stürmen die Halle. In wenigen
Sekunden sind alle Tische belegt! Fazit: Der Einlass veranschaulichte den Stellenwert, den die Hallertauer ihrer Hopfenkönigin zuerkennen.

on the dot the countdown begins. With squeaks and creaks, the

Eine Hallertauer Hopfenkönigin muss mit ca. 150 Terminen im Jahr rechnen – im In- und Ausland. Das lässt sich nicht ohne Weiteres mit Beruf oder Studium verbinden. Sandra Finkenzeller (4) war bereits Hopfenkönigin in der Saison 2003-04. Johanna, Carolin und Christine (5) blicken einem aufregenden Jahr entgegen. Sie werden der Welt
größtes Hopfenanbaugebiet und Hopfen-Kompetenz-Zentrum international repräsentieren. Mit 2 394 Stimmen werden sie zum neuen Dreigestirn gewählt. 30
Stimmen sind ungültig. Es wird vermutet, dass eine Tettnanger Delegation der „U30“-Jungpflanzer (7) vielleicht für die eigenen, die Tettnanger Majestäten
votiert hat (6). (1,2,3,5) Many pretty girls from Hallertau were present. Not all of them can or want to stand for election. It is a demanding post. A Hop Queen from Hallertau will
have about 150 appointments per year – at home and abroad. That’s not easy while also studying or working at the same time. Sandra Finkenzeller (4) has been Hop Queen before, in
the 2003/04 season. Johanna, Carolin and Christine (5) are looking forward to an interesting year. They will represent the largest hop growing region and hop competence centre in the
world. The new triumvirate gained 2,394 votes. 30 votes were declared void. It is suspected that the “U30” seedling grower (7) delegation from Tettnang voted for their own, the Tettnang Queens (6).

Beeindruckt kehren wir für den Rest des Nachmittags an
unsere Schreibtische zurück. Am Abend um 19 Uhr beginnen dann die Wahlen. Bevor die neuen Kandidatinnen auf
die Bühne kommen, um sich vorzustellen, verabschiedet
sich das Hopfendreigestirn 2005-06 Verena Kuffer, Elisabeth
Kirmeier und Christine Höckmeier. Ihre letzte Amtshandlung wird sein, ihre Nachfolgerinnen zu beglückwünschen.
Gegen Mitternacht steht das Ergebnis fest: Hopfenkönigin
in der Saison 2006-07 ist die 18-jährige Johanna Seidl aus
Eschelbach. Mit 1 097 Stimmen erhielt sie die klare Mehrheit. Als Hopfenvizekönigin steht ihr Carolin Albrecht zur
Seite. 755 Stimmen sind zu Gunsten der Geroldshauserin
abgegeben worden. Für die Überraschung des Abends sorgt
Christine Ackstaller aus Hüll. Spontan hat sie sich am Tag
der Wahl zur Kandidatur entschieden. Nach dem Ausscheiden von Sabine Haid aus Niederumelsdorf und Elisabeth Schmid aus Ossenzhausen im ersten Wahlgang
gewinnt die angehende Kunststudentin den Titel der Hopfenprinzessin. Bis auf Sabine Haid, „die Siegenburgerin“,
stammen alle Kandidatinnen aus dem Siegelbezirk Wolnzach. Insgesamt sind im 2. Wahlgang 2 394 Stimmen abgegeben worden. 30 Stimmen waren jedoch für ungültig
erklärt worden. Vermutung am Pressetisch: Vielleicht
stimmte ja die Jungpflanzer-Delegation aus Tettnang für
die anwesende Tettnager Hopfenkönigin?

begin to move. Immediately, people begin to force them open and
squeeze through at the first sign of a gap, as the first fans come rolling
from underneath the gates, jump to their feet and storm the hall.
Within a few seconds, all the tables are occupied! Conclusion: the
entry illustrates the significance of the Hop Queen for the people of the
Hallertau.
We are impressed and return to our desks for the rest of the afternoon. At 7 o’clock in the evening, the election begins. Before the new
candidates arrive on stage to introduce themselves, the hop triumvirate 2005/06, Verena Kuffer, Elisabeth Kirmeier and Christine Höckmeier say their good-byes. Their final official act is to congratulate
their successors.
Towards midnight, we have the results: Hop Queen of the 2006/07
season is 18-year old Johanna Seidl from Eschelbach. She won a clear
majority with 1097 votes. Her Deputy Hop Queen is Carolin
Geroldshausen, who received 755 votes. Christine Ackstaller from
Hüll caused a stir. She decided to be a candidate at the last minute, on
the day of the election. After Sabine Haid from Niederumelsdorf and
Elisabeth Schmid from Ossenzhausen were eliminated in the first
round, the budding art student won the title of Hop Princess. Apart
from Sabine Haid, who is from Siegenburg, all candidates come from
the seal-district of Wolnzach. 2,394 votes were cast during the second
round. 30 votes, however, were declared void. Speculations around the
press table: Perhaps the seedling growing delegation from Tettnang
voted for the Hop Queen from Tettnang, who was also attending?
