AIR ― ARTIST IN RESIDENCE ist ein spar tenüber gr eifendes Atelier pr ogr amm
des Landes Nieder öster r eich für Ar chitektInnen, bildende Künstler Innen,
M usiker Innen und Schr iftsteller Innen.
Ziel ist der Austausch mit inter nationalen Institutionen, die ebenfalls
Künstler stipendien und Gastatelier s ver geben, um im Gegenzug
nieder öster r eichischen Kunstschaffenden ar tist-in-r esidence Aufenthalte im
Ausland zu er möglichen.
In Zusammenar beit mit AIR ― ARTIST IN RESIDENCE pr äsentier t das DOK
Nieder öster r eich im Rahmen der Ausstellung eine Videoar beit des
austr alischen Gastkünstler s Kier an Boland (* 1 9 6 9 ).
Im Zuge seines Atelier stipendiums wir d Kier an Boland ein Videopr ojekt im
öffentlichen Raum realisieren, das sich mit seinen per sönlichen Er inner ungen
an einen fr üher en Aufenthalt in Öster r eich beschäftigt.
Dabei spannt der Künstler — ähnlich einer psychoanalytischen Sitzung — den
Bogen von einer zufälligen Sammlung überr aschend aufkommender
M omentaufnahmen bis zu einer bewussten Rückbesinnung auf die
br uchstückhafte Erinner ung an Or te und Er eignisse aus der Sicht des
Fr emden.
Dur ing his residency, Kier an Boland will pr oduce a video pr oject in which he
appear s in public spaces; par t candid camer a host/ par t tour guide to his own
youthful memories of a br ief visit to Austr ia.
As one might possibly find in a psychoanalytic session, the memor ies he
r ecounts r ange fr om the isolated, the overlooked super ficial details, to more
concer ted attempts at a recollection of places and events after a long
absence.
He pr esents himself within close pr oximity to a wide var iety of unknown
individuals — in what initially seems to be footage fr om a handheld video
camer a taken on vacation.
These images are however a manipulation: the upshot of silently lip-syncing to
pr e-r ecor ded memories using a discr eet ear piece in a per for mance for a
hidden camer a, in conjunction with video postpr oduction techniques mor e
often associated with special effects.
The basis of his investigation is an objective interest in the limits of what
constitute fr ee speech within an art pr actice.
The r ole that memory plays as a catalyst within repr esentations of
psychoanalytic discour se, and social polar ization sur r ounding sur veillance and
voyeur ism ar e also investigated. Boland implicates himself in questioning the
legitimacy of the for eigner ’s exper iences of place.
W hat value ar e such r epr esentations distor ted by time and memor y?
Can they lead us to r econsider our per ception of what is mundane, typecast or
